THE STUDENT SENATE

OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHARLOTTE

UNC CHARLOTTE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION

48th Legislative Assembly, 1st Session

SR48.1-1

A RESOLUTION ENCOURAGING DINING SERVICES TO INCORPORATE ZERO WASTE

INITIATIVES INTO THE FOOTBALL STADIUM VENDER CONTRACTS

Short Title: The Zero Waste Vending Act

Primary Sponsor: Ray Atkinson (CLAS)

Secondary Sponsor(s): Ethan Kuster (CLAS)

First Reading: April 21, 2011

Referred To: Internal Affairs Committee

Passage: April 28, 2011

Enacted: April 28, 2011

Whereas, according to the Zero Waste International Alliance, “zero waste means designing and

managing products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity

of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and not burn or bury them,” and

“businesses and communities that achieve over 90 percent diversion of waste from landfills and

incinerators are considered to be successful in achieving Zero Waste;”

Whereas, The University of North Carolina sustainability policy, which was passed by the Board of

Governors on October 9, 2009, charged our university to develop programs that work to achieve

zero waste;

Whereas, according to Devin Hatley, Environmental Educator for Office of Waste Reduction and

Recycling at UNC Charlotte, the University’s diversion rate is between 30 and 35 percent; this is

the figure of what is recycled versus what is thrown away. We would like to improve upon that

figure and go to zero waste;

Whereas, the University of Florida, University of Colorado, University of California, Arizona State

University, University of North Carolina, and Rutgers University have official policies, or listed

goals for approaching “zero waste;”

Whereas, achieving zero waste promotes responsibility in taking care of our new football stadium;

raises awareness of other methods to keep our campus and city healthy and clean for current and

future students, faculty and staff; and can make our campus more livable and clean for current

and future students, faculty and staff;

Whereas, the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling, Office of Sustainability, Earth Club,

Geography Club, and Charlotte Green Initiative show their support for ensuring UNC Charlotte's

football stadium is as sustainable as possible;

Therefore, be it resolved by the Student Senate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte:

SECTION I: The Student Senate requests the Administration, in choosing food-service vendors for

the stadium, make efforts to choose vendors who have demonstrated a commitment to

zero waste practices.

SECTION II: The Student Senate requests all stadium food-service vendors incorporate zero waste

initiatives into their practices and packaging and that all packaging be compostable

and/or recyclable.
