Respect for Humanityby Dwight Pepper (CSSBB), Americas QA

A set of memories from junior high school has never left my thoughts. There was a talented young man that demonstrated great artistic and mathematical abilities. I won’t give his true name, but we will call him Colten. Unfortunately, Colten came from a broken family that required financial assistance from the state. He escaped his home life by drawing quietly in the classroom. However, there was a considerable number of students who would constantly degrade him. Despite his talents, his performance in the classroom was among the bottom of the entire class, and he was distrustful of those around him.

What would Colten’s performance have looked like if he had been encouraged and built up? I imagine his outlook on life would have improved, and his grades would have been better. In this segment, we will be covering respect for humanity. Now, this does not mean that we need to go out of our way to the hold door open for a line of people. Rather, respect for humanity, as defined by Toyota, means “to respect all stakeholders, as well as to respect the character and abilities of employees as individuals and facilitating personal achievement by linking the personal growth of employees to company performance.”1

Respect for humanity is a way of thinking and is also the behavioral activity that results from it. In any role within the company, we can build other people up by recognizing not only their talents, but also their flaws. After we find someone's traits, we then can work to share our knowledge and expertise. This type of mentality must be practiced constantly to strengthen the company. This type of thinking and action taken must also be practiced with everyone, not just those who we find agreeable.

One of the best ways to foster people-shaping is to go to where the work is done. On-the-job training should be the primary means of development.

Lockheed Martin in 2017 awarded Positronic the opportunity to supply connectors for the Long-Range Discriminating Radar (LRDR) program. The connectors chosen by LMCO Engineers are the PCDD104M98S000-15 and DD104S4R7N00-50-1844.51. These were tested and chosen for their proven reliability and Positronic’s history of supplying quality products.

MINCO Products and the LMCO (Marion, Mass.) facility are manufacturing partners in the program. The first installation will be in Clear, Alaska and is on schedule for completion in 2020.

The LRDR program is the backbone of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA)’s layered defense strategy to protect the U.S. homeland from ballistic missile attack. LRDR is a long-range radar that will provide precision metric data to improve ballistic defense discrimination. LRDR will keep pace with evolving threats and increase the effectiveness of ground based interceptors.

Most recently, Lockheed Martin has received an additional $8.4 million for their missile defense contract

that will bring the total contract to $695 million. The MDA initially awarded the contract to Lockheed Martin for the project in 2015.

Lockheed Martin's contract provides options to develop, deploy, test, and operate an LRDR system. The LRDR combines radar, ballistic missile defense algorithms, and combat systems to support homeland defense.

LRDR provides constant acquisition, tracking and discrimination data to enable defense systems to lock on and engage ballistic missile threats, a capability that stems from Lockheed Martin's decades of experience in creating ballistic missile defense systems for the U.S. and allied governments.

Further expansion of the LRDR technology occurred in a landmark demonstration, in which Lockheed Martin connected key components of its Aegis Ashore and LRDR technologies. This validated the ability to greatly increase operational performance, efficiency and reliability of Aegis Ashore.

"Connecting these systems is more than a technological advantage - it's a way to provide the warfighter with earlier intelligence and expanded situational awareness," said Dr. Tony DeSimone, vice president and chief engineer of Lockheed Martin Integrated Warfare Systems and Sensors.

"Integration of these technologies allows us to deliver the most advanced solid-state radar system in LRDR with the proven tested capability of Aegis. For the warfighter, this combination provides an increased capability, in terms of additional performance and reaction time, to safely protect the people and nations they defend."

Connecting the two mature systems amounts to a low risk “technology refresh” of the legacy SPY-1 antenna, resulting in:

• Ability to detect targets at longer distances

• Ability to combat larger numbers of targets simultaneously

• Additional target engagement opportunities

• Higher performance in complicated land environments

• Minimized interference with civilian or military radio emitters and receivers

• Increased use of the new SM-3 Block IIA missile's performance

Lockheed Martin’s Solid-State Radar (SSR) is a scalable Gallium Nitride (GaN) based radar building block, which in addition to cutting edge performance provides increased efficiency and reliability. The Department of Defense's newest Ballistic Missile Defense sensor, LRDR, will use thousands of Lockheed Martin SSR building blocks to provide enhanced target acquisition, tracking and discrimination data to the U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense System. LRDR completed its critical design review in 2017 and is on track to be operational in Alaska in 2020.

Aegis Ashore is the land-based ballistic missile defense adaptation of the proven Aegis Combat System, currently fielded in Romania and soon to be fielded in Poland.

The research and development demonstration proved that current and future versions of Aegis can simultaneously command tasking of the Lockheed Martin SSR and receive target tracks from the radar. The next phase of activity is to demonstrate simulated missile engagements with live tracking, scheduled for the first half of 2018. These tests build on multiple previous demonstrations in 2015 and 2016, in which Aegis software variant Baseline 9 already tracked live targets using a prototype version of the Lockheed Martin SSR hardware powered by multi-purpose Fujitsu GaN from Japan.

We are currently awaiting the next round of releases as other allied countries are looking at adopting this system.

DID YOU KNOW?

Department 82- subassembly Welcome to our Sub-Assembly Department. This is the area where many of the components for final assembly are built, utilizing both moldings and contacts.

The moldings may require the installation of retainers, which allow the contacts to stay in place once seated into the molding. If the molding is a two-part molding, the retained molding will then be glued to the front molding and baked to cure the glue. The retainers are installed using our SOS machines. (SOS is the brand of the machine.) This department recently had 3 SOS machines added to meet the increased demand for retained moldings.

Then, there's the contacts. Female contacts may require a Posiband, which was designed by our own

John Gentry, or spring clip to be installed. This enables the contact to hold retention. Some contacts may also require a retainer to be installed to secure the contact into the molding. These two processes are performed using tweezers or a Posiband kit.

This department also puts the stripes on our military contacts. There are several different color combinations that they use to put bands around the crimp barrel end of the contact to identify it as a military contact. This is performed using a small paint brush and a steady hand. These contacts are then baked to cure the paint.

Needless to say, all of the processes performed in this area are tedious, require precision, and are critical to the performance of our finished connectors. We want to give a big thank you to all the individuals who work together as a team in this area to provide final assembly with the components they need to build quality connectors!

Some of the best leaders I have had the pleasure of working with labored with me. Of course, they could not spend all their time with me because they had businesses to run, but they made an effort to ensure that I was completing the work to the customer's expectations. In this process, not only did I learn from my superior, but my superior also learned from me.

This topic is not intended to be viewed as a feel-good, campfire moment. Respect for humanity is a necessary business function that, when practiced,

creates a corporate culture that improves creativity and teamwork. In fact, many corporations recognize respect for humanity as one of the main pillars in management philosophy. In our interactions with each other at Positronic, we should honor mutual trust and work to build one another up. It is vital to build good people in order to build good connectors.1 “Respect for Human Rights.” Sustainability Report, www.toyota-global.com/sustainability/report/archive/sr15/pdf/sr15_07_e.pdf.

Positronic France Invited to Speak at Technical Forum by Stéphane De Monicault, Europe Field Application Engineer

Positronic was invited by our Turkish distributor, AKTIF NESSER, to a technical forum organized in ANKARA.

With more than 250 people invited, Thierry Auvin and Stéphane de Monicault had the opportunity to highlight Positronic with two technical presentations:

- The Pressfit Technology for Space Flight Application

- The Contact Efficiency for Power Application

The forum was comprised of all the engineers and salesmen from the companies distributed by AKTIF NESSER, such as Aselsan, Tubitak, Roketsan and Turkish Airways.

It was an occasion for Thierry and Stéphane to have face to face meetings with new potential customers (Turkish Airlines, Turkish Air Force, Turkish Teknik) and companies well known by POSITRONIC (ASELSAN, ELMA).

The Turkish market continues to grow for Positronic, and it was a great opportunity to consolidate the link between AKTIF, our customers and Positronic in a nice and professional environment.

The organization was really perfect, and has allowed us to show the attendees our expertise and our products.
