In the complex world of computer networks, Zebra Technologies makes it easy to setup, manage, and monitor a Zebra printer attached to a PC network via an Ethernet connection. ZEBRA CONNECTIVITY

ZEBRALINK ZebraLink, a revolutionary real- time control and control solution that

is available on select Zebra printers, it includes the following functions: Alert, WebView, and Zebra BASIC Interpreter (ZBI).

ZEBRANET ZebraNet is a family of connectivity solutions. A key part of this

family is the ZebraNet PrintServer II which allows 10Base-T Ethernet connectivity to printers and is available in three different configurations: External, factory installed Internal, and field upgradeable Internal.

The ZebraNet PrintServer II has enhanced control capabilities that

allow web-based configuration of print server functionality as well as basic printer error reporting.

With a ZebraLink capable Zebra printer the ZebraNet PrintServer II

unlocks even more advanced capabilities like WebView and Alert. ZEBRANET UTILITIES ZebraNet Utilities is a software suite of printer administration tools that

POSITIONING SUMMARY

The ZebraNet PrintServer II provides superior ease of use and configuration, it supports a wide range of networking protocols, and includes ZebraNet® Utilities, a comprehensive administration software package at no charge. The ZebraNet PrintServer II is available in several different versions:

• External: capable of being used with any Zebra desktop and tabletop printer with a parallel port.

• Internal (factory installed): for simple plug and play Zebra printer usage out of the box.

• Internal (field installable): to facilitate the upgrade ability of certain Zebra printers that are already installed in an application.

Ease of Use and Configuration

• Easy to setup and install. • Configurable with ZebraNet Utilities administration software package as well as with other third

party packages like HP JetAdmin and HP Web JetAdmin. • The external version of the ZebraNet PrintServer II installs easily on the printer by attaching

directly to the existing parallel port on the Zebra printer. The internal version reduces printer footprint and space requirements.

• For all versions of the ZebraNet PrintServer II, the printer supplies power so there is no need for external power supplies.

UNIQUE SELLING POINTS Ease Of Use And Configuration

Zebra has developed and designed the ZebraNet PrintServer II for easy setup and installation. Thanks to a complete suite of easy-loading graphics-driven utilities, the ZebraNet PrintServer II offers easy point and click setup and installation.

ZebraNet View automatically searches the network and finds all of the ZebraNet PrintServer II devices that are online. Even devices that have not been configured for the network will appear. Once the desired ZebraNet PrintServer II is located, configuring for the network is just a click away. No longer does the system administrator need to complete multiple steps to define a printer queue. The ZebraNet Connect can create a queue that automatically finds the correct ZebraNet PrintServer II device and assigns the queue to the print server. Configuration and setup of the ZebraNet PrintServer II no longer requires the administrator to be local on the network. Remote setup can be done via a web browser enabling administration of the ZebraNet PrintServer II to be accomplished from one central location.

External And Internal Versions

The ZebraNet PrintServer II is available in both external and internal versions. The external version is available for use across Zebra’s current line of printers. The external ZebraNet PrintServer II simply attaches to the printer parallel port. No external power supply is needed because the ZebraNet PrintServer II gets its power directly from the printer’s parallel port. There is also an internal version of the ZebraNet PrintServer II that is either a factory or field upgradeable option. (Please refer to the table on the following page, to determine which Zebra printers support the internal version.) The internal ZebraNet PrintServer II eliminates the need for an external connection as well as reduces the overall footprint of a printer’s Ethernet connectivity solution.

Flexible Network Support

The ZebraNet PrintServer II supports a wide range of operating systems and the most popular communication protocols. The ZebraNet PrintServer II works on operating systems ranging from Windows NT to Unix. It supports TCP/IP and IPX protocols either singly or simultaneously. There is even capability to print from an AS400 via TCP/IP.

Administration Tools ZebraNet Utilities, is a fully featured administration package that complements and enhances the already powerful capabilities of ZebraLink resident within certain Zebra printers. ZebraNet Utilities is available for Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000. The View Java Applet is also available for Linux and Unix use as well. • View: features easy to use device discovery that allows you to automatically locate

printers. ZebraNet View can search on parameters such as IP address, subnet, printer model, printer status, and many other user defined characteristics. It also offers powerful device management capabilities.

• Alert: enables the configuration of multiple event alerts per device with different alerts going to different people. Users can be notified of alerts via either visual or audio cues. As well as including advanced alert report generation functions.

• Connect: enables simple printer selection of an IP addressable printer through Windows.

• View Java Applet: this Java based version of the popular ZebraNet View allows users of Java enabled platforms to also take advantage of powerful discovery features.

Software Compatibility HP JetAdmin, HP Web JetAdmin, and HP OpenView all work with the ZebraNet PrintServer II. This eliminates the need to install different printer management software to what is currently being used. Although these alternatives do not offer the full benefit package as the ZebraNet PrintServer II offers (e.g. ZebraLink Alert and WebView), the ZebraNet PrintServer II works flawlessly with these third party offerings.

Enhanced Management

The ZebraNet PrintServer II gives IT managers the unique ability to filter rights given to administrators to view printers. With the ZebraNet Utilities, View & Alert, system administrators only view the list of printers for which he is responsible. There is no need to browse through long lists of every printer on the network to see what the status of the assigned printers is.

Wireless Compatible

The ZebraNet PrintServer II is fully compatible with the ZebraNet Wireless Card Socket to provide wireless Ethernet connectivity via an internal Zebra printer option.

Additional external 3rd party wireless solutions from Symbol, Proxim, Lucent Technologies and more are also available and will work with the ZebraNet PrintServer II. The ZebraNet PrintServer II has been designed and tested to integrate smoothly and easily into wireless Ethernet environments.

Zebralink Compatibility

ZebraLink, a revolutionary real-time connectivity and control solution which is available on select Zebra printers, it includes: 1. Alert (with ZebraNet PrintServer II)— enables a Zebra printer to send unsolicited status

messages via email– enabled devices. 2. WebView (with ZebraNet PrintServer II)— enables the remote monitoring and

configuration capability of Zebra printers using Web- based network tools. 3. ZBI ™ (Zebra BASIC Interpreter)—programming language that works with ZPL II to

control and interpret incoming text and data.

ZebraLink offers the freedom to create stand-alone applications using a printer and peripheral devices, such as a scale, scanner or wand, without needing a PC host. Internet-aware, ZBI can then transmit data captured by these devices over your LAN, WAN, or wireless network via e- mail or TCP/ IP messaging.

II. APPLICATIONS

PRODUCTION LINE

A major computer manufacturer currently is using Zebra printers at the end of each of its production lines to label finished goods. These labels contain OEM information, configuration of the product, serial numbers and shipping information. The printers and the labels that are created are critical to the manufacturing process and must be on every product that goes out the door. Problem The printers are currently attached to individual computers that require constant supervision in case a problem occurs. The company would like to attach the printers to the main network and be able to monitor the printers for problems at one central location. The company also wants the ability to log and generate a report of down time each printer may have. Solution After listening to the needs of the customer, a Zebra reseller recommended that the ZebraNet

PrintServer II be integrated into the application. The customer was using XiIII Series printers so the external ZebraNet PrintServer II would install easily onto the printer’s parallel port. With ZebraLink Alert, the system administrator, can be notified of problems immediately. The Zebra reseller also demonstrated how the ZebraNet Alert could be used to create reports of how often each printer has problems, making it easier to determine, if and when the printer needs to be repaired. SOFTWARE CONVENTIONS

A small metal shop was interested in using Zebra printers to create shipping labels for its products. They ship approximately 200 to 300 items per day so the volume was very small, but the labels needed to be of high enough quality to be read by scanners at UPS. Since it is a small shop, the entire customer base shipping information is entered into a database on a Windows NT network. The printers therefore needed to be connected to the network. Problem The System Administrator did not want to change the utilities he was already using to manage and maintain his network of laser printers. He was using HP JetAdmin™ for the existing printers, and did not have the resources to train and get up to speed on a new suite of utilities. The system administrator preferred to stick to a software convention that was initially set up for HP software to manage the Zebra printers. Solution A reputable Zebra reseller took note of the application requirements and recommended a Stripe S600 and the ZebraNet PrintServer II to meet the company’s needs. The Stripe printer would be able to handle the volume of labels with excellent print quality, and the ZebraNet PrintServer II could be configured, managed, and maintained via the already existing HP JetAdmin software. WIDE AREA NETWORK MANAGEMENT

A large electronics manufacturer has facilities in the United States as well as in Japan, France, and Singapore. Its I.S. department is located in Illinois and all network management is handled by this location. The company currently uses laser printers to label all of its products because they offer compatibility with HP OpenView™, which facilitates management of the printers from one central location via the Internet. Problem The company is going to begin bar coding its merchandise and they are not happy with the bar code quality or the speed of its laser printers. Currently, they are looking into thermal transfer printing but require a way to control their printers over a WAN while still managing the system via HTML pages or HP OpenView™. The ability to maintain good levels of security, have easy set up and managerial software was yet another requirement. Solution An international Zebra reseller evaluated the application and networking conditions that the customer required and recommended the Zebra 140XiIII with an internal ZebraNet PrintServer II. Since the printer is going into a heavy industrial application, the customer was advised to use a printer that would not require an external print server to be attached to the parallel port. Also with the ZebraNet PrintServer II, the customer could maintain the functionality of the OpenView software as well as have the ability to see HTML pages over the Internet for management and set-up processes. With Zebra’s suite of utilities, setup couldn’t be any easier. The issue of security is also not a problem because the ZebraNet PrintServer II has a configurable password that permits edits provided the correct password is given. Overall, a perfect solution for a world wide application. Key Advantages

ACCOUNTING FIRM

A small accounting firm that specializes in running inventories for manufacturing facilities needs an efficient way to generate count tags for the items that have already been counted. The firm provides each of its employees that does the counting with a hand held terminal that allows them to input the part number and the quantity of the item being inventoried. The data is transferred from the hand held terminal to a server that has the entire item’s cost and description information contained in a database. The total cost of the item is tallied and a description of the item is created and sent to a printer. The complete data transfer is done in real time over a wireless network that uses NetWare™ for the operating system. Problem The company is currently using laser printers to print the count tags because of the printers’ easy connectivity to NetWare. However, their output performance is unacceptably slow. The labels are sheet fed with approximately twenty labels per sheet. This means that the printer must wait until it has received enough data to print 20 labels before it outputs the information. As a result, the labeling of the counted items lags far behind the actual counters. This delay can lead to errors as it becomes difficult to distinguish between items that have been counted and those that have not. Solution A Zebra supplier listened to the needs and wants of the customer and recommended the Z4M equipped with the external ZebraNet PrintServer II. The Z4M printer allows the customer to feed labels from a roll instead of a sheet, providing an on-demand printing solution. Connectivity to NetWare is not a problem either. With the ZebraNet View, connecting the printer to the network is intuitive and reliable. Hense, real time, on demand printing becomes a reality for this customer. Key Advantages

SHIPPING Problem A mid-sized company has been using laser printers to print shipping labels, but is unhappy with their barcode quality and the size and location of these printers. This company decides to install dedicated barcode label printers in their busy shipping area, but needs to access the shipping database on the company network. Solution Zebra 2844 printers with internal ZebraNet PrintServer II would meet the application need 100%. The compact size of the 2844 means that the printer would fit in restricted space areas, such as shelves or racking above the packaging area. Their double walled construction delivers dependable durability suited to the shipping environment. In addition, the internal ZebraNet PrintServer II does not take up any additional space because it is internally mounted. The 2844 can be connected to the network in seconds thanks to the plug and play, ZebraNet PrintServer II. ZEBRANET PRINTSERVER II WARRANTY

The ZebraNet PrintServer II is covered under the following Zebra general warranties. For complete Warranty Policy Information, refer to the ZebraNet PrintServer II User’s Guide.

1. GENERAL COVERAGE

Zebra printers are warranted against defects in material or workmanship for three years (36 months) from the date of purchase. This warranty does not cover normal wear and tear and shall be null and void if the equipment is modified, improperly installed or used, damaged by accident or neglect, or in the event any parts are improperly installed or replaced by the user. Proof of purchase or product registration is required. If proof of purchase or product registration cannot be established, shipment date to the original buyer (reseller or distributor) will be used to establish the warranty period.

2. RETURNED GOODS UNDER WARRANTY

The standard Zebra policy is in effect for returning in-warranty product. A Zebra Return Material Authorization (RMA) must be obtained from our Customer Service Group prior to returning any product.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

1. Are there any differences in functionality between a ZebraNet PrintServer II with an EPL based printer and with a ZebraLink enabled ZPL printer? Yes • In a ZebraLink environment, with either a web browser or with the ZebraNet View Utilities, there are a

variety of web pages which display a wealth of status information regarding both the ZebraLink printer and the ZebraNet PrintServer II. However, when used with an EPL printer, such as the LP/TLP 2844, the web pages for printer status are not available at this time, only the web page showing status of the PrintServer II is displayed. The PrintServer II can be easily configured. However, printer configuration information regarding EPL printers is not available via the ZebraNet Utiliites.

• Error conditions: Using ZebraNet Alert, an EPL printer can be configured to use multiple different IP addresses to report the following Alert status conditions: on-line, off-line, paper out.

• For EPL: only two destinations can be configured to report error messages (online, offline and paper out) using SMPT email alert – serial and parallel port destinations are not supported.

2. Can the internal ZebraNet PrintServer II option work on a computer that is running both TCP/IP and

IPX protocols simultaneously? Yes • The ZebraNet PrintServer II runs all of its available protocols simultaneously. This means that the

ZebraNet PrintServer II can run on mixed networks such as a network using Microsoft, UNIX and Novell NetWare operating systems.

3. Will the ZebraNet PrintServer II allow connectivity to anything other than a PC network?

Yes • The ZebraNet PrintServer II allows connectivity to such as IBM’s AS400, provided that it is configured

using TCP/IP. Other network protocols can be used with third party adapters that are converted to 10BASE-T.

4. Will the ZebraNet PrintServer II option work on a 10BASE-T per second network?

No • The ZebraNet PrintServer II option is a 10BASE-T print server. This means that the data cannot travel any

faster than 10 megabits per second. The ZebraNet PrintServer II can be deployed on a network that is utilizing 10/100 hubs, but the ZebraNet PrintServer II operates only at 10 megabits per second.

5. What if a print job makes it to the queue, but never leaves the queue? The label doesn’t print These are the things to check: • Confirm that the printer is turned on and receiving power. • Confirm that the network cable is plugged on and that you can ping the printer If the above suggestions do not change the outcome, it is likely that there was a misconfiguration while creating the queue. The queue must be recreated verifying the following:

• Confirm that you are using the print server’s valid IP address. • If you are using a UNIX or AS/400 host, there is an option for the remote queue name. There is only

one valid response to use: PORTLF1. • If Windows does not have LPR installed, the above required option should be left blank. • Refer to the documentation for other operating system specific queue creation.

6. What are the minimum requirements to network a printer?

• Cat-5 network cable with 10BASE-T connectors • ZebraNet PrintServer II • Hub or Switch • If a hub or switch in NOT used, you need a cross-over cable • Workstation running a TCP stack with print services installed

7. What do the activity lights on the ZebraNet PrintServer II mean?

• Fast blinking (9 times/second) – no link status • Slow blinking (1 time/second) – no IP address, or the unit is sending data to the parallel port • Blinking red – unit is still in POST • Red-green-red-green – unit is in NetWare firmware update mode • Red-red-green-green – unit is in IP firmware update mode • Solid red – unit has failed POST. Remove network cable and restart printer

8. What is the default User ID and password for the ZebraNet PrintServer II? • The User ID is admin and the password is 1234
