Overview

It is important for administrators to know about changes that will occur when upgrading from HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 Service Release 4 (10.2.71771) to newer versions of HP Web Jetadmin 10.2, specifically Service Release 5 (10.2.73942), Service Release 5 Hotfix (10.2.74918), Service Release 6 (10.2. 77156), and later releases. In essence, HP has changed device data structures to improve both usability and reliability. Many of these data structures have been updated to include details added to device settings through firmware development. Many of the improvements will help preserve columns and filtering settings over OS or environment changes, whereas today filter settings based on strings data can be prone to issues. Because of the updates performed in the newer HP Web Jetadmin version, certain functionality changes will take place that include changes to existing customer settings. This document outlines the upgrade changes that will take place. Administrators should be fully aware of these changes before performing this upgrade and should also take a few pre-upgrade actions to ensure success.

NOTE: It is very important to run a backup of HP Web Jetadmin before upgrading. HP Web Jetadmin contains a backup script set with instructions in the directory %PROGRAMFILES%\Hewlett-Packard\Web Jetadmin 10\WJABackupRestore\. Use the WJABackupRestoreInstructions.txt file to learn more about these scripts. Keep your backup files and directories in a safe location and always note the version of HP Web Jetadmin from which the backup is taken.

Device details stored in HP Web Jetadmin templates or active tasks

Devices can be configured manually via Configuration Templates or scheduled tasks. In the case of Configuration Templates, administrators can store device configuration settings in a template for later use or for application through HP Web Jetadmin Automatic Groups. Scheduled tasks that contain device settings that have not yet been applied to the devices might also exist. In both cases, HP Web Jetadmin can write changes to both stored templates and scheduled tasks as part of an upgrade feature that is initiated just after the installer upgrades HP Web Jetadmin and starts the HPWJA Service. Many of these changes take place in the background and administrators do not have to take action.

In a few cases, functionality has changed enough that HP Web Jetadmin notifies the administrator of a template or scheduled task change. In these cases, the notification alerts the administrator that a specific configuration item has been removed from the template.

Here is an example of an upgrade notification where configuration items were removed from the template. In Service Release 5, HP Web Jetadmin can potentially remove two configuration items from both templates and scheduled tasks. These configuration items are:

Address Book Management (replaced by Import/Export Address Book) Access Control for Device Applications (replaced by Access Control for Device Functions)

Here are some steps administrators should take before performing the upgrade:

1. Back up HP Web Jetadmin as noted in the beginning of this document.

2. Locate templates that include the configuration items noted above.

3. Capture and note all settings related to these configuration items.

Page 3: Upgrade Technical Note - Upgrading from HP Web Jetadmin …h10032.Jetadmin 10.2 Service Release 4 (10.2.71771) to newer versions of HP Web Jetadmin 10.2, specifically Service Release

3

4. Locate past histories that show device configuration using either affected templates or scheduled configurations.

5. Capture and note all settings related to these configuration items.

After the upgrade is complete and on the first client startup, the dialog shown in Figure 1 appears. Use this dialog to address templates and scheduled task changes that took place during the upgrade.

HP Web Jetadmin filtering details stored in device lists or in device groups

As stated previously, device data structures in HP Web Jetadmin 10.2 Service Release 5 have changed. Because of these changes, filter settings put in place before the upgrade are impacted. Filter functions in HP Web Jetadmin based on user settings made before the upgrade might no longer work as expected, but remain in place after the upgrade has finished. After the installation, HP Web Jetadmin displays a notice that certain filters require adjustment. The remainder of this document describes the upgrade process as it relates to HP Web Jetadmin filtering.

After the HP Web Jetadmin installer is first launched and the installer application detects upgrade, a notice is displayed (Figure 2). The notice conveys to the administrator that certain filters, including those used in automatic grouping, might be affected. The notice also asks the administrator to back up the HP Web Jetadmin instance prior to doing the upgrade. This is the only portion of the install/upgrade that conveys the

Page 4: Upgrade Technical Note - Upgrading from HP Web Jetadmin …h10032.Jetadmin 10.2 Service Release 4 (10.2.71771) to newer versions of HP Web Jetadmin 10.2, specifically Service Release

4

filter upgrade notice. The remainder of the filtering upgrade details are conveyed after the installation is complete.

Figure 2: HP Web Jetadmin Installation Message

After the installation is completed and the HP Web Jetadmin client is started, notification is made through two different display items (Figure 3 and Figure 4) linked from the HP Web Jetadmin Application Log. Multiple messages are possible in each. These notices are conveyed for both stored filters and automatic group filters.

Page 5: Upgrade Technical Note - Upgrading from HP Web Jetadmin …h10032.Jetadmin 10.2 Service Release 4 (10.2.71771) to newer versions of HP Web Jetadmin 10.2, specifically Service Release

5

Figure 4: HP Web Jetadmin Upgrade – Filter Issue Message

These messages (encountered at first client startup) are displayed only once. The groups and filters messages remain in the HP Web Jetadmin Application Log. Locate the application log by selecting View, Application Log on the HP Web Jetadmin menu bar. In the application log, sort by the Action Details field, and look for the text “Upgrade - Group Issue” or “Upgrade - Filter Issue”. The details are also noted in the HP Web Jetadmin upgrade log, which is typically located in one of the following directories:

• DRIVE:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\Hewlett-Packard\HPWebJetadmin\WjaService\tracing\

• DRIVE:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Local\Hewlett-Packard\HPWebJetadmin\WjaService\tracing\

The following are examples of both of the HP Web Jetadmin logs.

Figure 5: HP Web Jetadmin Application Log

Page 6: Upgrade Technical Note - Upgrading from HP Web Jetadmin …h10032.Jetadmin 10.2 Service Release 4 (10.2.71771) to newer versions of HP Web Jetadmin 10.2, specifically Service Release

6

After the upgrade is complete and the filter and groups details are known, the administrator should begin to address all issues noted. The process for addressing these issues is simple. The following items can cause the HP Web Jetadmin upgrade to flag an issue:

1. Filter is invalid

2. Column text string used in filter has changed or is no longer usable

3. Column property used in filter has changed

4. Column used has been replaced by <other column>

5. Column has been made Obsolete

The first three cases require that the filtering issue be investigated and addressed because the filters noted are no longer functional. The fourth and fifth issues indicate either a newer column exists or the column is no longer valuable and is being made obsolete. In the case where a newer, replaced by column exists, the filter or column continues to function, but the obsolete item will be removed from HP Web Jetadmin at some future time.

NOTE: The release where this removal will occur is to be determined. HP will notify customers through the support documentation when the removal occurs.

Administrators should switch to replacement items quickly to obtain optimal support. Most items that are simply obsolete will also be removed in a future HP Web Jetadmin release. Obsolete items really do not have a simple one-to-one replacement. Administrators should work with the new Counters, Supplies, or other columns and sub-columns to find the correct solution. In some cases, obsolete simply means the item is no longer of value and will be removed at a future date.

For each logged item, evaluate the issue message content for the affected filter name. Edit the filter by using either the Groups or Filtering editor interface, depending on where the filter is being used. In many cases, the editor will reveal that the filter is not valid due to a name change.

The example condition shown in the Filter Editor (Figure 6) reveals that filter element names are invalid. In this case, the data elements must be changed to valid data elements because of renaming. Here are some steps that should be taken to address a specific filter issue:

1. Copy the contents of the Advanced Filter Editor into Notepad or some other text editor.

2. Clear the contents of the HP Web Jetadmin editor UI, and enter Basic edit mode.

3. Through the Basic edit interface, acquire new filter data elements and rebuild filtering according to the messages revealed in filter issue logging.

NOTE: Names listed in the Advanced Filter Editor are HP Web Jetadmin Programmatic Names. Use the tables supplied in the Appendix to determine HP Web Jetadmin Service Release 5 filter editor names. At this time, the Appendix and this document are English only.

NOTE: See the HP Web Jetadmin Service Release 5 Columns and Filters white paper that describes new HP Web Jetadmin column functionality. This white paper is available at the HP Web Jetadmin support page.

Summary

Understanding upgrade changes and correcting issues is sometimes necessary with complex features such as filtering and configuration templates. Watch HP Web Jetadmin support content and helpful white paper for details.
