1. Definition

According to the report in1987 of the World Commissionon Environment andDevelopment (BrundtlandCommission)

Sustainable development is:“development which meets theneeds of current generationswithout compromising the abilityof future generations to meet theirown needs".

2. Legal Framework

Article 45 of the Spanish Constitution of 1978 establishes that:

Everyone has the right to enjoy an environment suitable for personaldevelopment, as well as the duty to preserve it.

The public authorities shall safeguard rational use of all naturalresources (…).

Criminal or, where applicable, administrative sanctions (…) shall beimposed (…).

Law 26/2007 , of October 23 , on Environmental Responsibility.

Section 28 of the "Initiatives for Local Authorities in support ofAgenda 21 " states:

The local authorities (…) play an important role in educating andmobilizing the public to promote sustainable development.

Ex. School Activity-The bicycle in the city: primaryeducation will finish knowing how to pedaling andsecondary education knowing how to circulate safely.

Zaragoza Green Belt isthe first continuouspath of 30km forpedestrians andcyclists in the vicinityof Zaragoza.

Zaragoza has established five Recycling Centres or “Puntos Limpios” where neighbours can freely get rid of certain types of household waste, so they can receive recycling treatment and avoid polluting the environment.

4. What should be improved?

In my opinion, we are in the good way. We can considerthose projects as a start but there is still much to do.

Zaragoza population is an aging population, who takeslonger time to adapt themselves to sustainabledevelopment.

This is the reason why the government of my city shouldcontinue to encourage such projects and invest moremoney in advertising to make them known .
