I am excited to discuss a project trial the maintenance staff will be performing the

last 2 weeks of August. Many of you have heard or read about the new varieties of

bentgrass clubs across the country are changing over to. These new varieties are

genetically advanced and change the way golf courses are managed. Disease

resistant, drought tolerant, and superior playing surfaces are the main

characteristics this grass provides. For perspective, these surfaces use one-third of

the fertilizer; one-fifth of the water; and approximately one-tenth of the chemical

inputs the older bentgrasses require. Our goal is to give our members and their

guests the finest playing conditions possible while being good stewards of our

environment.

We will be killing off the front half of #4 fairway and reseeding with 2 varieties, split down the middle. We will back

off maintenance on this fairway next year to test which one holds up and also which surface is most desired by the

membership. Once it is established, I would love to get feedback from the membership as far as noticeable differences

and preferences. If there are any questions, feel free to contact me to discuss this or any other item on the course.

Best regards,

Chad Miller

FAIRWAY FITNESS FACTS - PEAKING AT THE RIGHT TIME

Getting in shape for golf requires as little as two 15 to 20 minute exercise sessions per

week. As your condition improves, however, your exercise time and effort can be pro-

gressively increased and integrated onto a per-iodized training program in which you

emphasize different conditioning components for various time periods throughout the

year.

The success of any training program is based on how you are able to control, modify,

and manipulate two key variables: volume and intensity. - Compliments of Zoomie Golf

Golf Conditioning is available at ORCC FITNESS CENTER. Call Rebecca Byrket,

Golf Conditioning Coach and Certified Personal Trainer, at 385-1996 to get started. REBECCA BYRKET

Golf Tip of the Month…

Use your practice time wisely. If you have one hour to devote to practice,

spend one half hour on the range and the rest of your time on the short range

and putting green. Don’t spend all of your time in one area! Try to simulate

and picture golf course situations in your practice regimen. Gary and I feel this

will help you produce more consistent results on the course.
