Project Narrative1. What is planned?* Describe project plan and indicate which parts of project any NMHC award will fund.

Stories from Home: Interviews from the Nuevomexicano Diaspora requests funding support for a series of five free public interviews of New Mexican women speaking about home, traditions, dance, and movement practices. Each interview will feature a nuevomexicana speaking about dance history and/or movement practices. Interviewees include: Lucy Salazar -nuevomexicana folk dancer (confirmed), Delfina Romero - nuevomexicana folk dancer (pending), Crystal Sanchez -former matachines dancer (pending), Dr. Myrriah Gómez-former matachines dancer (confirmed), and Shannon Parrales -contemporary dancer (confirmed). Themes include: dance history, embodied histories/knowledges. Interviews will close with an interactive question and answer (Q&A) from the audience. Interviews with Q&A, will last 1.5-2 hours each. Live-streamed online interviews will be free to the public. An example interview is: Culture bearer Delfina Romero, nuevomexicana folk dancer and the only woman president and vice president in the history of the dance group La Sociedad Colonial Española de Santa Fe, is interviewed by a project scholar. Audience learns about Romero’s experiences as a dancer and leader in the group. Themes will include: New Mexico dance history, women in dance, and cultural traditions.

To comply with COVID-19 social distancing, this project will reach audiences online. Interviews will be livestreamed on Instagram live and Anymeeting simultaneously. We chose two platforms to reach different audiences as Instagram live will reach younger audiences (18-35) while Anymeeting is available to audiences in general. The Q&A section is an integral part of the interview as it offers audiences opportunities for interaction and exchange. Project leaders chose these platforms for their interactive features. On both Instagram live and Anymeeting allow for audiences to ask questions or chat with interviewees live in video and text form. Anymeeting also offers audiences the option to chat amongst each other in private conversations about the interview. Using platforms with these features is important as it offers opportunity for meaningful dialogues during Q&As. All Interviews will be recorded and archived by the University of New Mexico and Safos Dance Theatre. Access to the video archive will be available to the general public on patreon for a nominal fee of $2.

NMHC funds will be used to 1)compensate culture bearers, scholars for their time, 2)graphic design of online promotional materials, 3)purchase of online platform Anymeeting, 4)staff time, 5)public interpretation of dance history. Additional funding from this project comes from the Arts Foundation of Tucson and Southern Arizona (pending), Safos Dance Theatre, and Montoya’s DanceUSA Artist Fellowship (both confirmed).

Graphic design is important to this project as the creation of eye catching digital posters promoting public interviews will attract audiences. Digital posters will be shared on social media platforms, via emails, and as a graphic for press releases. Graphic design is a cornerstone in online marketing and publicity.

This project is directed by dancemaker and 23rd generation nuevomexicana Yvonne Montoya. Montoya is the founding director of Safos Dance Theatre and is a Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Fellow and a DanceUSA fellow. This project is part of a larger three act series of online interviews and dance performances curated by Montoya entitled “Stories from Home,” that begins June 2020. The entire series will feature 15 webinars centering the stories of NM/Southwest. The other two acts will feature stories about mothering in the NM diaspora in times of COVID-19 and dancemaking at home. The cast of “Stories from Home” will serve as public interpreters of dance history briefly bringing interviewee stories to life. Dance is an ephemeral artform. As dancemakers, the art supplies that we use for interpretation are dancer’s bodies; dancers are our paint, canvas, and paint brushes. Because this project focuses on dance history, the public interpretation will be dancers embodying an aspect of the interviewees story and bringing it to life for audiences.

Comment: Much description given to the planning aspects of the program and not the actual program so much. Public program and themes should be emphasized if applicant could explain a little more. Program is still very much in the planning phase....interviewees have not been identified. Interviews will be archived and available for $2.00...will they be made available for New Mexico? How will those interested know of this archive and be able to access? KMQ

Seems that much to be done on this project - suggest planning done this summer and then apply for the October deadline when the project can be outlined in more detail (after interviews obtained and stories developed). LSS

3. Where will it take place?* List communities of public programs, including venues.

Virtual/Online formats Instagram live and Anymeeting.

Comment: Would be strengthened if they elected all three or one of these formats, at this point it comes across as if they don't know which online platform. Would also help to indicate why they chose particular to present programs. KMQ

4. Who are the Required Project Personnel for this Project?* Required Personnel include Project Director, Fiscal Agent, Humanities Scholar(s) and Evaluator. Provide names, titles and brief qualifications for their role(s) in this project.

Project Director: Yvonne Montoya, MS. Founding Director of Safos Dance Theatre and founding Director of Dance in the Desert: A Gathering of Latinx Dancemakers. Current Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Fellow and DanceUSA Artist Fellow. 15 years’ experience directing community-based projects including the three year community mural project “Color the Mural/Dancing the Mural” and Dance in the Desert.

Project Coordinator: Michelle Marji, project coordinator for 4 years, directed several projects and events.

Fiscal Agent: Michele Orduña, founding board member of Safos Dance Theatre, INC. Orduña has over 15 years experience in evaluation and is the board chair of Safos Dance Theatre and is Vice President and Chair of the Grants Committee for the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona’s Board of Directors. Safos is a non-profit dance company co-founded in 2009 by Project director Montoya. The org is based in Tucson where Montoya currently resides.

Humanities Scholars: Dr. Brianna Figueroa, PhD. Assistant Professor Department of Theater and Dance, UNM. Dr. Myrriah Gómez, PhD. Assistant Professor Honors College, UNM. Lucy Salazar, nuevomexicana folk dancer and master teacher with over 30 years experience.

Evaluator: Mireya Guerra, MS. Independent evaluator and professional concert dancer with over 20 years experience.

Public Interpretation: Ruby Morales, Shannon Parrales, Steve Rosales, Delia Ibanez, Marcela Acosta, Emigdio Arredondo-Martinez professional concert dancers, cast of “Stories from Home.”

Graphic Designer: TBA, but will be someone from New Mexico.

Comment: Again, I see that fiscal agent and project director are one in the same. Needs to be two different people. KMQ

Evaluator might be someone with humanities background vs. dance to give different perspective. LSS

5. How does this project involve the humanities disciplines?* The act that established the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) says, “The term ‘humanities’ includes, but is not limited to, the study of the following: language, both modern and classical; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism, and theory of the arts; those aspects of social sciences which have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods; and the study

and application of the humanities to the human environment with particular attention to reflecting our diverse heritage, traditions, and history and to the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of national life.”

This project centers history and history of the arts.

This project directly explores the history of traditional nuevomexicano folk dances. These dances have been passed down as embodied knowledge from one generation to another, from one dance to another for centuries. Essentially, the project is putting into words an embodied historical practice. Interviewees will answer questions regarding their dance forms, how and when they were learned, who taught them, where and when dances were performed, what music was used, what the costumes looked like, etc. Interviewees will explain the importance of nuevomexicano folk dances on their communities highlighitng the rich histories and traditions of the dances and dancers. Online interviews will be testimonios, mini oral histories with an audience. As an ephemeral art form, the essence of dance is difficult to capture as a history. This project seeks to capture the essence of the folk-dance histories of New Mexico, using dancers to bring the memories to life in a different way. Project themes include: New Mexico dance history, women in dance, and cultural traditions. The project asks the question: What does dance history tell us about nuevomexicano communities and the roles of women within these communities?

Additionally, the project will look at how traditional nuevomexicano dance practices can inform and inspire the aesthetics of contemporary nuevomexicano concert dance artists. Nuevomexicano dance aesthetics are unique in that the majority of dancers are performed outside rather than in theaters, costumes are specific to each individual dancer rather than uniform, and music use for performances are amalgamations of many forms reflective of New Mexico’s mixing of cultures over time. This project asks the question: What can contemporary nuevomexicano dancers learn from these histories and traditions?

Furthermore, this dance is happening in a time of living history of COVID-19. The project will examine life in the nuevomexicano diaspora in the time of COVID-19 asking what it means for nuevomexicanos in the diaspora to connect to home and family when they physically cannot return due to travel restrictions.

Comment: Response could also place these dance practices into context more if we knew who would be interviewed. Would be helpful if the response could go on to address how dance or dance groups fit into the community, how they interact with the community, and how they contribute to the community. This response could be unpacked a little more, and perhaps this would fit better in response to #10. Fleshing out more on the themes within dance or folk dance practices would shed more on what would be shared with audiences. KMQ

6. What are the evaluation criteria for the project?* Consider the impact the project intends to have on its audience and how that will be measured or evaluated by the Project Director and Evaluator.

Evaluation: 1)Audience: a)Intake forms for demographics and pre-interview survey. b)Q&A with audience and survey evaluations after each interview. c)tracking engagement from audience via social media. 2)pre/post surveys for Scholars/Culture bearers.

Mireya Guerra will conduct evaluation. Guerra is an independent evaluator and professional concert dancer with over 20 years experience in each field. Guerra is ideal because she brings an outside perspective and will see project impact in ways that an evaluator closer to the subject matter might not be able to determine. Guerra is an excellent evaluator. Montoya worked with Guerra in 2018 when she collected focus groups for Dance in the Desert. Guerra can provide English/Spanish bilingual evaluation. She evaluated data for DanceNYC’s Immigrants. Dance. Arts. 2018 survey.

This project will use Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodologies. PAR is a democratic model of research that emphasizes collective inquiry and engages all project participants as key stakeholders in every

phase of the project, including evaluation. Guerra will work with key stakeholders (interviewees, scholars/culture bearers) over the summer to determine evaluation goals, objectives. Collectively, Guerra and stakeholders will define parameters that determine criteria for project success. We chose to use PAR because we feel it is a more equitable and reciprocal method of evaluation as it includes feedback and insight from project stakeholders.

Comment: I don't get a good sense of their evaluation criteria. What are their goals and objectives in sharing these stories beyond building an archive of knowledge on NM dance culture/traditions?

What will the surveys ask beyond demographics? Evaluator should be looking at the humanities content, audience engagement....KMQ

Impact on AUDIENCES needs to be measured - not participants! LSS

7. What is the role of each humanities scholar(s) in this project?* Describe the intended contribution of each humanities scholar listed above. What humanities issues will they address?

Dr. Brianna Figueroa, PhD, Department of Dance (Dance Scholar, Dancemaker), University of New Mexico. Dr. Figueroa will work as a consultant to the project, providing connection to the UNM and local contemporary and concert dance artists and scholars. She will also advise on interview questions and provide advice and support to the project team when necessary. Dr. Figueroa is also the interview moderator for the project.

Dr. Myrriah Gómez, PhD, Honors College (Historian), University of New Mexico. Dr. Gómez will work as a consultant to the project identifying audiences who may be interested in the project. She will also advise on interview questions and provide advice and support to the project team when necessary. Dr. Gómez, a former Malinche and Matachines dancer, will also be an interviewee.

Both Dr. Figueroa and Dr. Gómez will serve as liaisons to the New Mexico community on behalf of Montoya who is located in Tucson and cannot travel home to New Mexico at this time.

Lucy Salazar, Nuevomexicana Folk Dancers. Ms. Salazar practices and teaches traditional nuevomexicano folk dances. She has over 30 years experience. She will be an advisor to the project providing advice to the project team when necessary. Salazar is also an interviewee.

Delfina Romero, Nuevomexicana Folk Dancer. Ms. Romero was the only woman vice president and president of La Sociedad Colonial Española de Santa Fe. She has over 50 years experience as a dancer and dance leader. She will be an interviewee.

Crystal Sánchez, former Matachines dancer performing in the role of Malinche in El Rancho, New Mexico. She will be an interviewee.

Shannon Parrales, Contemporary Dancer from Pojoaque, NM. She will be an interviewee speaking of bringing New Mexico dance history and traditions into a contemporary practice.

The process leading up to the series of dances for “Stories from Home” included a long research period in which Montoya re-entered homes/ancestral communities periodically since fall 2017. Dr. Gómez and Dr. Figueroa have been working as advisors to the project over the past year. Other recent touchpoints in New Mexico include residencies at Keshet Dance & Center for the Arts, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center in 2019. Montoya was scheduled to have a week-long rehearsal residency at UNM Dance Dept in June 2020, wherein the dancers of “Stories from Home” were scheduled to meet with and learn from culture bearers in person. The residency was canceled due to the pandemic.

Comment: Scholars should be involved more beyond adviser or consultant role, perhaps moderate or conduct the interviews, or live portion of programs. There is no mention as to the people who have the knowledge and experience (cultural bearers) of dance history within their own communities. Why doesn't the applicant showcase the work done in her "Stories from Home"?

People who are giving the interviews are also community scholars and should be included in this response along with the themes they will discuss with audiences. KMQ

8. Proposed targeted audience/participants?* Indicate demographics and/or geographic area and projected size of audience for project events. Identify new or underserved populations that might be included in target audience.

NM universities: History, American Studies, Chicano Studies, Dance Departments. School districts who taught Spanish dancing. National Hispanic Cultural Center: 2019 Montoya’s company did a residency with Voces(literary arts), Manoa(performing arts) summer programs & Montoya is connected with Dr. Tey Marianna Nunn, Director of Visual Arts. Santa Fe Opera: 2019 Montoya met with Andrea Walters, Kyle Gray who are interested in expanding dance. Keshet: 2019 Montoya was a Makerspace Experience Artist in Residence at Keshet. They promote Montoya’s work. Las Pistoleras Instituto Cultura de Arte: Dr. Gómez has strong connections with Dr. Theresa Córdova of Las Pistoleras. Rio Grande National Heritage Area: Dr. Gómez has working relationships with staff. Audience list may change based on feedback, advice from scholars and interviewees.

Regarding size, given that this is a new platform, it may take some time to gain momentum and attract

audiences online. The goal is to reach 300 audience members (40 in Anymeeting, 20 on Instagram live= 60 for each public event. 5 events x 60 audience=300). Audience is intentionally small for meaningful engagement. It is easier for smaller audiences to engage in intimate, robust conversations. With large audiences, it is challenging to field questions, engage in conversation. Public interviews will be recorded and archived. Given that this project is a part of a larger body of work, we anticipate audiences will continue to see interviews over time.

Comment: Seems like very small target audience for what could be ground-breaking study and presentations (when fully developed). Why wouldn't larger NM population be interested in these talks/presentations? LSS

9. Planned publicity efforts?* List plans by sponsor organization and partners, types of media to be used and geographic areas to be targeted.

Planned publicity efforts will be initiated 1 month before the event and are four-fold: 1) We will work with scholars/culture bearers to promote the project to New Mexicans through direct email, word of mouth, and social media posts. They will be encouraged to share the information with their networks including University departments and students, program participants, organizational email lists, and family and friends. Public interviews will be promoted on social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook) with an emphasis on personal invites targeting New Mexico audiences. 2) Project director Montoya has direct contacts at regional and national dance and art organizations and institutions of higher learning who might feature the project on their social media, e-newsletters, or websites. Organizations include: WESTAF, the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures and DanceUSA. 4) Montoya is working with dance publicist Mariclare Hulbert to raise awareness about the larger multi-year dance project “Stories from Home.” Mariclare is an arts marketing and communications consultant, she worked as Director of Marketing for Jacob's Pillow for nearly 10 years and now works with arts, health and human services, and small business clients across the U.S. As one component of this larger body of work, Hulbert will promote this project on Montoya’s behalf. Hulbert is

based on the East coast and works nationally. For the purpose of this project, she will focus her media efforts on New Mexico.

Graphic design is important to this project as the creation of eye catching digital posters promoting public interviews will attract audiences. Digital posters will be shared on social media platforms, via emails, and as a graphic for press releases. Graphic design is a cornerstone in online marketing and publicity.

We envision marketing as a ripple effect with the core emphasis starting in New Mexico and expanding out regionally, nationally, and internationally. It is important to note that Montoya presented research at the international conference “Indígenas, africanos, roma y europeos: Ritmos transatlánticos en música, canto y baile/Natives, Africans, Roma and Europeans: Transatlantic Rhythms in Music, Song and Dance” in Veracruz, Mexico last year where discussions about el Chotis, a traditional nuevomexicano dance, also from Spain and used to be danced in Argentina, took place. For that reason, there may be international interest in this work.

Comment: Response could focus more on reaching NM audiences in publicity efforts. Outreach to local elementary school depends much on we'll see if there is interest. Recommend leaving this part out of response. National and International outreach and impact are important and great, however for the NMHC grant program we need to make more of an impact locally for our communities. KMQ

One month in advance is not enough time - when stories obtained, why not start getting those out there to media in advance to generate interest? Could be months in advance! Focus on NM outreach and leave national and international out of this. LSS

10. Value of Project on Audience Members* Describe how a successful project will impact audience members and their communities.

Value to the audiences is a deeper understanding of New Mexico’s dance history and dance traditions and the important role women played in these cultural practices. Audiences will walk away with answers to the question: What does dance history tell us about nuevomexicano communities and the roles of women within these communities? This project is an opportunity for the public to learn about the contributions each interviewed woman made to the field of dance and her challenges, struggles, and joys as a dancer. This is an opportunity for the public to engage in shared thought and collective inquiry about movement practices.

This work is important both in and beyond the dance and arts world because it contributes to the cultural fabric of the nation and shares nuevomexicano stories, histories, movements, and aesthetics that remain largely unseen by mainstream dance artists and dance historians. Dance provides an opportunity for connection across cultures at the physical, embodied level. We seek to bring people together in community and learning surrounding experiences at home, stories, and art.

Comment: Response could expand on the value and impact of program a little more....could strengthen application, but initial response as is is good. KMQ

RE: Stories from Home: Interviews from the Nuevomexicano Diaspora

Dear New Mexico Humanities Council,

I am pleased to offer this letter of support for Yvonne Montoya and her grant application for the New Mexico Humanities Grant for the project titled Stories from Home: Interviews from the Nuevomexicano Diaspora. I strongly feel that this project will have a positive impact for nuevomexicano communities and New Mexican communities at large. I look forward to serving in the role of interviewer and consultant, conducting interviews and connecting Montoya with nuevomexicano dancers and culture bearers for the project.

Montoya’s project, Stories from Home, brings visibility to nuevomexicano dance practices by blending the traditional folk-dance aesthetics and stories of our ancestors and elders, with contemporary dance practices. I believe in Montoya’s vision to use this work to deepen knowledge and understanding of nuevomexicano cultural practices, and the aesthetics of the Southwest region, which remain largely unseen by the mainstream U.S.

I have supported and partnered with Yvonne for the past five years as an artistic collogue and as her dramaturg. I am confident in her ability to fulfill large scale projects and cultivate meaningful relationships as she does so. She is more than capable of meeting the goals of the New Mexico Humanities Council Grant program.

I am especially excited to support the continued development of Stories from Home. Should you have any questions, concerns, or need additional support please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected].

Most Sincerely,

Brianna Figueroa, PhD Assistant Professor

I support this project and commit to serving in the role of consultant connecting Montoya with Nuevomexicana/o dancers and culture bearers. Montoya’s project, “Stories from Home,” brings visibility to Nuevomexicano dance practices by blending the traditional folk-dance aesthetics and stories of our ancestors and elders with contemporary dance practices. Montoya’s vision to collect and share histories of Nuevomexicano cultural practices will reposition native New Mexican knowledge of and in the Southwest region, histories which remain largely unseen in the history of the United States cultural practices. This project will also provide communities with resources and relatable knowledge that sheds light on these important historical concepts. I first met Yvonne in 2016, and she and I have remained in contact and discussed ways that she can return to New Mexico to 1) conduct research and 2) teach various courses (both community and academic) in her home state. My experience working and planning with her assure me of her ability to fulfill large scale projects with meaningful relationships. She is more than capable of fulfilling the goals of the New Mexico Humanities Council Grant program. I am excited to support the development and continuation of “Stories from Home.” Please contact me directly at [email protected] if you have any questions regarding my support of Yvonne Montoya or this project. Sincerely,

Myrriah Gómez, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, UNM Honors College
