Yves Béhar and Herman Miller welcome a new addition to the office chair family.

Prolific industrial designer and founder of fuseproject, Yves Béhar, has collaborated with herman Miller on many occasions. their latest creation is the result of thousands of sketches and over 70 prototypes, in search of a design that maximises comfort while minimising materials.

in the same way a suspension bridge achieves structural integrity and an elegant form through thin tension cables, the SAYl™ chair uses the same engineering principles to deliver the first full suspension back chair that is frameless and has no hard edges. “it’s human nature to seek life unframed... And [people] want that same unframed spirit in the object they use and how they experience them,” says Béhar.

with a trademarked 3D intelligent™ Suspension Back, the chair is made from a special type

of urethane, injection moulded and suspended in varying degrees of tension between the distinctive Y-shaped vertical structure and the underside of the chair. Providing ergonomic support for different areas of the back, the SAYl chair is designed to adapt to a person’s shape and movements.

A process of elimination ensures a minimal use of materials. the chair is made from 21% recycled content and 93% of its materials are recyclable. Béhar’s eco-dematerialised™ approach ensures the chair’s sustainability, setting it on target to achieve MBDc cradle-to-cradle Silver, BifMA level 2 and GReeNGuARD certifications.
