THE GATHERING
Stand Come, thou Holy Spirit, come
Stephen Langton (d. 1228)trans. J. M. Neale (1818-66) & othersNEH 139 1st tune
Come, thou Holy Spirit, come,
And from thy celestial home
Shed thy light and brilliancy:
Father of the poor, draw near,
Giver of all gifts, be here,Come, the souls true radiancy.
Come, of comforters the best,
Of the soul the sweetest guest,
Come in toil refreshingly:
Thou in labour rest most sweet,
Thou art shadow from the heat,
Comfort in adversity.
O thou Light most pure and blest,
Shine within the inmost breast
Of thy faithful company:
Where thou art not, man has nought;
Every holy deed and thought
Comes from thy divinity.
Sinful hearts do thou make whole,
Bring to life the arid soul,
Guide the feet that go astray:
Make the stubborn heart unbend,
To the faint, new hope extend,
Wounded souls, their hurt allay.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
Sit Reading1 Kings 19.15-16,19-21
The LORD said to Elijah, Go, return on your way to thewilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall
anoint Hazael as king over Aram. Also you shall anoint
Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall
anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as
prophet in your place.
So he set out from there, and found Elisha son of
Shaphat, who was ploughing. There were twelve yokeof oxen ahead of him, and he was with the twelfth.
Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle over him. He
left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, Let me kiss my
father and my mother, and then I will follow you. Then
Elijah said to him, Go back again; for what have I doneto you?

He returned from following him, took the yoke of
oxen, and slaughtered them; using the equipment from
the oxen, he boiled their flesh, and gave it to thepeople, and they ate. Then he set out and followed
Elijah, and became his servant.
This is the word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God
Stand Father, hear the prayer we offerMaria Willis (1824-1908)
NEH 391
All Father, hear the prayer we offer:Not for ease that prayer shall be,
But for strength that we may ever
Live our lives courageously.
Not for ever in green pastures
Do we ask our way to be;
But the steep and rugged pathway
May we tread rejoicingly.
Not for ever by still waters
Would we idly rest and stay;But would smite the living fountains
From the rocks along our way.
Be our strength in hours of weakness,
In our wanderings be our guide;
Through endeavour, failure, danger,
Father, be thou at our side.

Gospel Reading
Luke 9.51-62
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according
to LukeAll Glory to you, O Lord.
When the days drew near for Jesus to be taken up, he
set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers
ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the
Samaritans to make ready for him; but they did not
receive him, because his face was set towards
Jerusalem. When his disciples James and John saw it,
they said, Lord, do you want us to command fire to
come down from heaven and consume them? But he
turned and rebuked them. Then they went on to
another village.
As they were going along the road, someone said to
him, I will follow you wherever you go. And Jesus saidto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have
nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.
To another he said, Follow me. But he said, Lord, first
let me go and bury my father. But Jesus said to him,
Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go
and proclaim the kingdom of God. Another said, I will
follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those
at my home. Jesus said to him, No one who puts ahand to the plough and looks back is fit for the
kingdom of God.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
All Praise to you, O Christ.

We keep silence.
Stand The Creed
Let us declare our faith in God, Father, Son and
Holy Spirit.
All We believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is,
seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.For us and for our salvation he came
down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit
and the Virgin Mary
and was made man.For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the livingand the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshipped
and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic
and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the
forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.Amen.

All Thou didst leave thy throne and thy kinglycrown
When thou camest to earth for me;
But in Bethlehems home there was found
no roomFor thy holy nativity:
O come to my heart, Lord Jesus;
There is room in my heart for thee.
Heavens arches rang when the angels sang,
Proclaiming thy royal degree;
But in lowly birth didst thou come to earth,And in great humility:
O come to my heart, Lord Jesus;
There is room in my heart for thee.
Thou camest, O Lord, with the living word
That should set thy people free;
But with mocking scorn and with crown of thorn
they bore thee to Calvary:O come to my heart, Lord Jesus;
There is room in my heart for thee.

When all heaven shall ring, and her choirs
shall sing,
At thy coming to victory,Let thy voice call me home, saying, Yet there
is room,There is room at my side for thee:
O come to my heart, Lord Jesus;
There is room in my heart for thee.
Preparation of the Table
Taking of the Bread and Wine
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation:
through your goodness we have this bread to set
before you,
which earth has given and human hands have made.
it will become for us the bread of life.
All Blessed be God for ever.
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation:
through your goodness we have this wine to set
before you,
fruit of the vine and work of human hands.
it will become for us the cup of salvation.
All Blessed be God for ever.

The Eucharistic Prayer
The Lord be with youAll and also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
All We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All It is right to give thanks and praise.
Blessed are you, Lord God,our light and our salvation;
to you be glory and praise for ever.
From the beginning you have created all things
and all your works echo the silent music of your praise.
In the fullness of time you made us in your image,
the crown of all creation.
You give us breath and speech,
that with angels and archangels
and all the powers of heavenwe may find a voice to sing your praise:
All Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name
of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

How wonderful the work of your hands, O Lord.
As a mother tenderly gathers her children,
you embraced a people as your own.When they turned away and rebelled
your love remained steadfast.
From them you raised up Jesus our Saviour,
born of Mary,
to be the living bread,
in whom all our hungers are satisfied.
He offered his life for sinners,
and with a love stronger than death
he opened wide his arms on the cross.
On the night before he died,
he came to supper with his friends
and, taking bread, he gave you thanks.
He broke it and gave it to them, saying:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.
At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine,
he gave you thanks, and said:
Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the
new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness
of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance
of me.
Great is the mystery of faith:All Christ has died
Christ is risen
Christ will come again.

Father, we plead with confidence
his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross;
we remember his dying and rising in glory,and we rejoice that he intercedes for us at
your right hand.
Pour out your Holy Spirit as we bring before you
these gifts of your creation;
may they be for us the body and blood of your
dear Son.
As we eat and drink these holy things in your presence,
form us in the likeness of Christ,
and build us into a living temple to your glory.
Bring us at the last with Mary, Philip and all the saints
to the vision of that eternal splendour
for which you have created us;
through Jesus Christ, our Lord,
by whom, with whom, and in whom,with all who stand before you in earth and heaven,
we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of
everlasting praise:
All Blessing and honour and glory and powerbe yours for ever and ever.

as we forgive those who sin against us.Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.
Breaking of the Bread
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

John Bode (1816-74)NEH 420
All O Jesus, I have promisedTo serve thee to the end;
Be thou for ever near me,
My Master and my Friend;
I shall not fear the battle
If thou art by my side,
Nor wander from the pathway
If thou wilt be my guide.
O let me hear thee speaking
In accents clear and still,
Above the storms of passion,
The murmurs of self-will;
O speak to reassure me,
To hasten or control;
O speak, and make me listen,Thou guardian of my soul.
O Jesus, thou hast promised
To all who follow thee,
That where thou art in glory
There shall thy servant be;
And, Jesus, I have promised
To serve thee to the end;O give me grace to follow,
My Master and my Friend.
