    God our Saviour,

    THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

    Sit Reading2 Samuel 11.26-12.7

When the wife of Uriah heard that her husband wasdead, she made lamentation for him. When the

mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his

house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son.

But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD,

and the LORD sent Nathan to David. He came to him,

and said to him, There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had very

many flocks and herds; but the poor man had nothing

but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. He

brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his

children; it used to eat of his meagre fare, and drink

from his cup, and lie in his bosom, and it was like a

    daughter to him.

Now there came a traveller to the rich man, and he

was loath to take one of his own flock or herd to

prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him, but hetook the poor mans lamb, and prepared that for the

guest who had come to him. Then Davids anger wasgreatly kindled against the man. He said to Nathan, As

the LORD lives, the man who has done this deserves to

die; he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did

this thing, and because he had no pity.

Nathan said to David, You are the man!

This is the Word of the Lord.

    All Thanks be to God.

In Christ alone! who took on fleshFulness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousnessScorned by the ones he came to save:

Till on that cross as Jesus died,The love of God was satisfied -For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body layLight of the world by darkness slain:Then bursting forth in glorious DayUp from the grave he rose again! And as He stands in victorySin's curse has lost its grip on me,For I am His and He is mine -Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,

This is the power of Christ in me;From life's first cry to final breath.

Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man,Can ever pluck me from His hand;Till He returns or calls me home,Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

    The GospelLuke 7.36-43

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according

to LukeAll Glory to you, O Lord.

One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, and

he went into the Pharisees house and took his place at

the table. And a woman in the city, who was a sinner,

having learned that he was eating in the Pharisees

house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment. She stood

behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to bathe his

feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair. Then

she continued kissing his feet and anointing them with

the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited

him saw it, he said to himself, If this man were a

prophet, he would have known who and what kind of

woman this is who is touching himthat she is a

sinner. Jesus spoke up and said to him, Simon, I havesomething to say to you. Teacher, he replied, speak.

A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed fivehundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could

not pay, he cancelled the debts for both of them. Now

which of them will love him more? Simon answered, I

suppose the one for whom he cancelled the greater

debt. And Jesus said to him, You have judged rightly.

This is the Gospel of the Lord

All Praise to you, O Christ.

Love to the loveless shown,That they might lovely be.

O, who am I?That for my sakeMy Lord should take

    Frail flesh, and die?

He came from his blest throne,Salvation to bestow:

But men made strange, and noneThe longed-for Christ would know.

But O, my Friend,My Friend indeed,Who at my need

    His life did spend!

    Sometimes they strew his way,

And his sweet praises sing;Resounding all the day

Hosannas to their King. Then Crucify! Is all their breath,And for his death

    They thirst and cry.

    In life no house, no home,My Lord on earth might have;

In death no friendly tomb,But what a stranger gave.

What may I say?Heavn was his home; But mine the tomb

    Wherein he lay.

Here might I stay and sing,

On the night before he died,

    when darkness had fallen,

Jesus took bread. He gave thanks, broke it,

and shared it with his disciples, saying:This is my body, given for you.

    Do this to remember me..

After they had eaten, he took the cup of wine,

gave thanks, and shared it with his disciples, saying:

This is my blood, poured out for you and for many,

    for the forgiveness of sins.

So Father, with this bread and this cup

All I cannot tell how he whom angels worshipshould stoop to love the peoples of the earth,

or why as shepherd he should seek the wandrerwith his mysterious promise of new birth. But this I know, that he was born of Mary, when Bethlems manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world,

    is come.

I cannot tell how silently he suffered,as with his peace he graced this place of tears,or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted,and stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy laden,

for yet the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is here.

I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirationsof east and west, of sinner and of sage.

But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun shall shine

in splendourwhen he the Saviour, Saviour of the world,

    is known.

I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when, at his bidding, evry storm is stilled,or who can say how great the jubilationwhen evry heart with perfect love is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad, myriad human voices sing, and earth to heavn, and heavn to earth,

    will answer:

At last the Saviour, Saviour of the world,is King!
