They are more grounded and independent than their millennial predecessors and generally more risk-adverse. They are inclined to stand out rather than to fit in. Digital is their universal language and being plugged-in to the internet has been their default setting since birth. The CAUS Youth Forecast for Fall/Winter 2017-18 incorporates some of the key values of this still officially unnamed generation. As a result, the season is one that breaks with convention and reflects the uncertain future that post-millenials face.

CAUS COLOR FORECAST REPORT

YOUTH Fall/Winter 2017-18

THE BIG FLIP “Gender flipping” surfaces in the youth market, bre-aking down binary gender norms. Turning sexism on its head, this movement proliferates in all areas of youth culture. The trend can be seen in the emer-gence of gender-neutral baby names (Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg’s baby girl “Max” for example) and in the increase in non-traditional character roles in TV shows and books (including the gender-swap-ping of book series Twilight Reimagined to comic book characters in Netflix series Jessica Jones). Translating this shift to fashion, the movement in-spires an overall relaxation of silhouettes and the introduction of loose, baggy layers. The palette de-monstrates that gender, like color, isn’t just a choice between limited options, but falls along a spectrum.

• Colors skew neutral, but are beautifully rich • Expressions of grey are updated with saturated

YOUTH Fall/Winter 2017-18

ALL-INThe next wave of technology allows the develop-ment of innovative ways to connect, including im-mersive sensory experiences. The entertainment in-dustry has been one of the leaders in this interactive model, engaging consumers through virtual reality and controlled environment-related events. By en-gaging the senses through color, light, sound, scent and touch, brands are able to make an emotional connection with this age group. Kids respond to these literal “bells and whistles”, creating an alluring atmosphere of dynamic enga-gement. Color takes on a luminous persona, echoing the vi-brancy of these environments.

• Opacity is explored within the palette, resulting in layers of transparency

• Metallic green-gold and silver are positioned as power metallics

• Slicker is a departure from conventional color, adding dimension with this supercharged iride-scent hue

CAUS COLOR FORECAST REPORT

YOUTH Fall/Winter 2017-18

ON DEMANDEvolving from the idea of DIY, the notion of DIFM (Do It For Me) begins to replace the desire to do every-thing for one’s self. In a time when life is essentially lived “in the cloud”, easy access to cherished digital assets is expected. Almost everything can be orga-nized and arranged with the click of a button -- from a personal assistant to pick-up car service. Cyber-space becomes “home base”, with 24/7 access to anything imaginable. In line with this effortless, unli-mited accessibility, the palette brings together clean and clear color in a variety of bold tones.

• Blue stands out as a poignant pop of color, set-ting a cool tone

• Deep purple replaces black as a solid ground color

• Bold fuchsia is infused with a hint of coral, pro-ducing the brightest accent in the forecast for the season

CLOUD LYFE | R146 G170 B213
