BEGINS PRELIMINARY EXPLORATION OF EQUITY
CROWDFUNDINGgov.sk - Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority of Saskatchewan (FCAA) hosted an information session and discussion today re-garding a proposed exemption to The Securities Act, 1988, which would allow equity crowdfunding in Saskatchewan.Crowdfunding is growing in
popularity around the world. In Canada, it’s being used to pre-sell products and receive donations for small businesses or creative proj-ects. However, other jurisdictions such as the United States are begin-ning to think about equity crowd-funding: raising capital for small businesses or creative projects via an online funding portal by sell-ing securities like shares, limited partnership units and promissory notes.

continued from front“As the regulator of securities in Saskatchewan, we are interested in hearing from small businesses in Saskatchewan to find out if there’s an interest in equity crowdfunding in our province,” FCAA CEO Dave Wild explained. “We want to dis-cuss whether there is a funding gap for start-up businesses and small businesses and whether our regu-lations are too burdensome in that area – so we invited entrepreneurs to discuss whether equity crowd-funding could address some of those challenges.”
FCAA’s preliminary proposal de-tails potential limits on the amounts and number of offerings that issu-ers, promoters, directors, and offi-cers can open in a year as well as who would be allowed to use the equity crowdfunding exemption and how FCAA would regulate its
use. This discussion session is part of a preliminary consultation process to gauge interest in equity crowd-funding in Saskatchewan. If suffi-cient interest is expressed, FCAA will begin discussions with online funding portals.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - JULY 11
• 1980: Terry Fox hits TorontoThis is how it all began. On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox began an epic cross-country journey to raise money for cancer research.Terry Fox’s entire family from British Columbia joined him in Toronto. His parents Rolly and Betty and his younger sister Judith were delivered by limousine to a surprise meeting with Terry in Whitby, Ont., courtesy of the Toronto Star. • While Terry was in Toronto, his older brother Fred was also flown in for a surprise visit. (Fred was named after Betty’s brother, who had lost both of his legs in a plane crash in Manitoba in the 1950s.)
• According to Leslie Scrivener’s book Terry Fox: His Story, Terry’s visit to southern Ontario was particularly complicated. After running through Scarborough to To-ronto, he ran across Bloor Street and University Avenue to a City Hall rally at Nathan Phillips Square. The next day, he flew to Niagara Falls, then back to Toronto for a run into downtown via Danforth Avenue. The following day he ran from Nathan Phillips Square to Lakeshore Boulevard, continuing toward Oakville.
• He also had time for some fun and games. In the evening, Terry Fox threw out the first pitch at a Toron-to Blue Jays baseball game at Exhibition Stadium. The next night he and his family dined at the top of the CN Tower, and attacked each other in a bumper car race. Terry’s leg was knocked off, and he had to hop back onto the platform, where he was suddenly surrounded by well-wishers. “Nobody recognized me until my leg fell off,” he said.
• The Niagara Falls side trip was a big disappointment. Only fifty people showed up, and mayor Wayne Thomp-son handed Terry a cheque for $100. Terry refused to attend a show at Marineland because he was told he couldn’t collect money for his run there.
Also on July 11: • 1957: Bob Panasik of Windsor, Ont., becomes the youngest golfer to make the 36-hole cut in a PGA Tour event. At age 15 years and eight months, he qualifies for the final two rounds of the Canadian Open in Kitchener, Ontario. He finishes tied for 66th place.
• 1960: Northwest Territories Council holds its first session at Resolute Bay, (Nunavut) - the most northerly point for any legislative meeting.
• 1989: Vicki Keith of Kingston, Ont., becomes the first person to swim the En-glish Channel using the butterfly stroke. She completes the journey in 22 hours and 33 minutes.

TWO DAYS ONLY!
by Wendy ThienesEntries are starting to come in for the
Old Tyme Country Fair, scheduled for Friday, July 19 from 1-8 pm and Saturday, July 20 from 12-4 pm at the CPWC.
Many categories are available for locals (and non-locals!) to enter their home-made goods including seed & grain, bak-ing, canning, crafts, photography, art, beer & wine and more! Entries have been coming in, even from Alberta & British Columbia!
Here’s the process again: pick up a Fair Book at the Museum or Rexall. Decide which categories you are going to enter and fill in the entry form in the back of the booklet. Mail or drop off the form at the Museum before July 12. You will then be given entry tags to attach to your items. Bring your actual entry items to the curling rink on Thursday, July 18 before 3 pm. All entries will be judged that evening, and then all entered goods and the winning entries will be unveiled for public viewing starting Friday at 1 pm. There are beautiful commemorative rib-bons to be won and a few special catego-ries in the baking and canning sections as well!
There is no cost to enter. It’s just some friendly competition and a fun way to participate in the festivities. We can’t wait to see who bakes the best pie, or cans the nicest peaches!! And with all the amazing amateur photographers and artists in the community, we anticipate a beautiful showing of artwork!
The schools have participated as well and there will be some beautiful artwork on display by the kids!
A quilt show will adorn the rink--any-one interested in showing a quilt for DISPLAY ONLY, is asked to contact Carol Ann Hansen at 297-2888.
On Friday afternoon at 3 pm, the Centennial Quilt that was created by a group of local quilters will be unveiled!
A souvenir booklet describing the quilt will be available for purchase as well.
A lap quilt was also created using the surplus pieces and raffle tickets will be sold on that.
In addition to the quilt, the Bench Colony created a rug depicting the Centennial logo, and this will be unveiled at the Fair as well!
Thank you to all of these hardworking craftspeople for your interest and enthu-
siasm--your creations will leave a lasting legacy of our celebrations!
The Fair will serve up loads of fun for all ages with pony & buggy rides, fish pond, interactive agricultural displays, antique displays, machinery displays, chick hatchery & more! And the entertainment line up is exceptional: Richard Simmons Rejects from Gull Lake, Gary Smith’s fid-dle group, Reed Miller, Nicole Hanson, The Meringues, Wanda Gronhovd and the Shaunavon Dance Co. will perform Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.
Don’t miss the Sheepdog Demo Saturday at 1 pm on Diamond #5 (just north of the outdoor rink), and the Saskatoon pie booth sponsored by Shaunavon 4-H. The concession booth will also be open at the rink Thursday, Friday & Saturday, with a Cold Plate sup-per special on Friday and Beef on a Bun supper special on Saturday. A sports memorabilia display area is also being planned for upstairs at the arena.
With all of this great activity and ample areas to sit and visit, be sure to make the Old Tyme Country Fair and Crescent Point Wickenheiser Centre a key stop during your Centennial weekend.
