to10lbs! So Tiffany created the B.A.G. Handbag on Wheels. The B.A.G.

Julia Colon found Avon to be the company that give her the opportunity to
have her own business. The opportunity to work on her goals and to be a
stay at home mom, make her own money, to be more independent, and to
set an example for her little girl and for women in the world. It's very
important that she is involved in her daughter’s life and she has found that
having a 9‐5 job takes her away from the precious moments that they need
together. Yes, there are companies that have flexible schedules etc... as an
opportunity to be with your family. However, she found that even though
those polices are there it did not apply to her. For her, she didn’t want to
break up her time in different days. She wanted a set schedule where she is
able to be 100% there for her daughter when she needs her. So, she started her own Avon Business.

God as her center point to each and every day. With a hectic
household and a full‐time job, she created solutions in her book,
Digging Deeper, for things we all experience daily in our lives. It
was in her trial and error of her own life that this book was born.
It is her desire to help others live the life they were created to live
through finding happiness is all that they do. Her belief that we
were not created to be disorganized and chaotic is the essential
inspiration of this book. It is her wish to be able to help others
move past the internal messiness to a place they are happy to live in each day.

BRIAN DETTMER is a New York‐based artist known for his detailed and innovative sculptures with
books and other forms of antiquated media. Dettmer’s work has been exhibited internationally in
numerous solo and group exhibitions at galleries, museums and art centers including the Smithsonian
(D.C.), Museum Rijswijh (Netherlands), Wellcome Collection (England), and the Illinois State Museums
(IL). Dettmer’s work can be found in several public and private collections throughout the US, Latin
America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.
In his work he begins with an existing book and seal its edges, creating an enclosed vessel full of
unearthed potential. He then cuts into the surface of the book and dissect through it from the front.
He work with knives, tweezers and surgical tools to carve one page at a time, exposing each layer
while cutting around ideas and images of interest. Nothing inside the books is relocated or implanted,
only removed. Images and ideas are revealed to expose alternate histories and memories. His work is
a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new
relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original
conception.

GreatFinds:Foundations&BBCreams
I am asked often what are my favorite foundations and BB Creams. So, here they are. I have several
because we all want something different. Some like pressed, some like loose, some like liquid; so all
choices are here!
Purminerals 4 in 1 pressed powder mineral foundation
is an amazing product. For most women a concealer
will not be needed in addition to use with this
foundation. The shades match skin tones beautifully,
too, even darker ones that have a problem with dark
foundations going orange.
http://www.purminerals.com
Etienne Raff’s Universal BB Cream is just
amazing. I have used this on very fair and to
medium dark, it has truly worked for all of
those tones. I like it better than concealer
because it is a smoother look. This is the only
BB Cream that I recommend to people.
http://www.etienneraff.com/
If you are looking for a great liquid
foundation that is smooth and leaves no line
of demarcation (as long as you do get the
correct shade), then you need to get
Exuviance. This foundation is literally the
best liquid foundation that is on the market.
There are many good liquid foundations, but
this is the best. http://www.neostrata.com

Fireworks Cosmetics is a small brand that is
growing daily. It is a mineral makeup, and is
gluten free. Fireworks will send you samples for
you to match your skin tone (a small fee, very
small). If you need a custom blend, Fireworks will
oblige. It is very strong in pigment which means it
takes very little to go a long way. There are no
fillers, so when you see the small container, just
realize; there are no filers so there is much less
product needed and she has a no frills thought
process, so no fancy expensive containers.

Your True Colours makeup has a
collage pressed powder that is great
for Warm Tawny skin tones, who have
a really hard time finding just the right
shade. It is only available in Light and
Medium, and there are no samples. It
is available only in Memphis and
Atlanta.

Warm Orange skin tones. I keep it in

LifeImage–HouseCleaning
SPRING CLEANING. JUST THE THOUGHT OF IT IS SO VERY DEPRESSING.
Spring cleaning’s origins are from the times when no
one had central heat. Fireplaces, with wood or coal,
were the ‘central heat’. Multiple fireplaces in large
homes were the norm. They were not there for the
ambiance, they were there to heat the home. Windows were kept closed, and
drapes were kept drawn to hold in any and all heat that could be held within the
walls of the home. The end result of this was soot. Soot on everything, rugs,
drapes, furniture, everywhere! So, when the warmer temperatures began to
arrive, rugs were taken out back and beaten clean (no one had wall to wall carpet,
either); furniture was aired out and cleaned thoroughly; and draperies were sent
out to be cleaned (rarely) or taken out back and beaten clean, too, unless they
were washable, then they were washed and hung to dry.
Just trying to keep our own homes clean sometimes is just too much to do. So,
how do we keep the house clean with schedules running wild, both parents
working, children invovled in too many afterschool activities, and exhaustion
setting in once one graces the doors of one’s own castle? Planning. Planning with
just a few minutes each day.
This can apply to each of the children in the home, and each of the adults. Simply
choose one chore to do each morning, or every other morning, depending on the
household’s needs.

DIYFloorPillows!
byLeahLynnette
PhotosbyLeahLynette
SO…YOU ARE HAVING A GIRL’S NIGHT IN AND YOU NEED TO GET YOUR PLACE READY. YOU LOOK AROUND
YOUR LIVING ROOM AND NOTICE YOU HAVE MORE PEOPLE COMING THAN YOU HAVE SEATING…WHAT’S A
GIRL TO DO? That’s where DIY Floor Pillows come in handy! Recently, I decided to have a MUCH needed
Girl’s Night In (Slumber Party Themed) and needed some fun seating so that my girls would be
comfortable. I went to the store (several actually) to look at large floor pillows. RIDICULOUS! Prices
ranged anywhere from $55 (for small pillows), to upwards of $250. I don’t know about you, but your girl
is on a budget and THAT was not in it. Well luckily I come from a very crafty family and we are always up
for a project. So I decided to make them myself! Just don’t do like me and wait to the day of the party to
get started! I’ll share the steps I took below:
Head to your local Fabric Store (I went to Hancock’s) and you will find everything that you need:
12 yards or fabric (depends on how many you want to make. I also chose mismatched patterns to create
a whimsical look, which was 2 yards a piece. Go to the discount table…I did. $1 to $5 yard…What!?)
Batting (Purchase the BULK batting that normally comes in a 5lb box for around $20. I used 2 boxes.
They were on sale for 50% 0ff! Hindsight: I should have used 3! 1 per pillow)
Scissors / Thread / Sewing
Machine (I borrowed my
mom’s…you could do it by
hand…but ain’t nobody
got time for that!)
Now that you have
everything you need, lets
get started!
The how‐to for each of
these is the same, but the
measurements are not.
First, we’ll show you how
YourTrueColours Vol. Issue
M a r c h 2 0 1 5 | 18 Your True Colours
to make a large square 36 inch by 36 inch floor pillow. As with any sewing project, the first thing to do is
cut your fabric! Cut 2 squares that are 36 inches by 36 inches. Then, with a complimentary or matching
fabric, cut 4 pieces that are 36 inches by 7 inches. Lay everything out before you get on the sewing
machine to make sure all your pieces fit together.
Start with the top of your pillow. Place the two “right”
sides of the fabric facing each other and sew with a 1
inch seam allowance. Repeat on for all 4 side
panels. Attaching the bottom of the pillow is the same as
the top, but you want to leave one corner OPEN– this is
where you’ll put the stuffing in. Remember, your pillow
should look like it’s inside out while you sew.
Sew each of the corners (still inside out) and then turn
your pillow case right side out. Remember to leave one
open! Fill with stuffing. Sew corner close to secure, and
you’re done!
THE DIMENSIONS FOR ALL OF THE PILLOWS WE MADE ARE AS FOLLOWS:
Large Square Floor Pillow (used for the tutorial):
– 2 pieces of fabric that are 36 inches by 36 inches
– 4 pieces of fabric that are 36 inches by 7 inches
Large Rectangular Floor Pillow:
– 2 pieces of fabric that are 27 inches by 42 inches
– 2 pieces of fabric that are 27 inches by 7 inches
– 2 pieces of fabric that are 42 inches by 7 inches

Wellness:HomeKitchenGardens
By KallyEfros
A HOME KITCHEN GARDEN USED TO BE PART OF DAILY LIFE AND IN MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD IT STILL IS.
GROWING UP, I REMEMBER GOING OUTSIDE WITH MY FAMILY ALL TOGETHER TO PREPARE THE GARDEN IN
THE SPRING, USUALLY AROUND APRIL AND THEN PULLING WEEDS IN THE SUMMER. I always anticipated the
first harvest of cucumbers and okra and I remember waiting for them and munching on them. No one
told me that eating these vegetables coming out of the garden were good for me, I just knew they
tasted good! I loved gardening with my family. It was an activity we did together. Of course, there was
the time my sister and I had an argument with a rototiller and I still have the scar on my leg, but I
remember those days with great fondness. There is nothing better than a vine ripened tomato right out
of the garden; add a little salt and that is heaven to me.
My kids remember picking and eating
fresh strawberries and blueberries from
the garden. Last year we had an
abundant crop of apricots and they had
never had anything so delicious as a fresh
apricot. We all love going outside and
collecting fresh herbs for cooking and
greens for salad and smoothies. It is so
delicious tasting and well worth the effort.
I didn’t know why I was always drawn to
gardening, but I have been and I just feel
better digging in the dirt.
I have since learned, there are a lot more
benefits to a garden than great tasting
food. Food you are growing yourself has
more nutrients than what you will get from the store, especially if you are replenishing your soil. You
can also organically grow your produce and eliminate pesticides in some of your food. You’ll save
money while gardening as well.
Studies show that one of the activities attributed
to centurions (those that live past 100 years) is a
garden or some type of physical activity like that
until the day they die, they simply stay active
and learn new tasks.
YourTrueColours Vol. Issue
M a r c h 2 0 1 5 | 24 Your True Colours
Gardening is great exercise, plus you get some extra sunshine for vitamin D. Studies show that in just
one hour of easy gardening you can burn 300 calories. You can get your stretching, not to mention
some strength and aerobic exercise while gardening. For those with physical limitations, there are all
kinds of tools available to help.
If you have a competitive side to you, then you can enter the country fair or other competitions with
your produce or garden. Your garden can help you feel more creative and gardening is simply a
wonderful hobby. Hobbies are a key to living a happy, fulfilling lifestyle.
All these benefits add up to a wonderful stress reliever which helps improve your
mood. Digging in the dirt is a healthy activity, and your body actually benefits
from direct contact with the earth. Amazingly, people can go for weeks without
touching the ground. Our bodies have positively charged electrons and free
radicals that build up, adding to our stress and poor health. When we come in
direct contact with the earth, we balance this out with the negative grounding
charge from the earth. The benefits of gardening get us back in touch with the
earth and reduce stress. Many even sleep better.
A study from the Netherlands showed that gardening fights stress better than
most activities and those who gardened had lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. Another study
out of Norway showed that just six hours of gardening each week helped symptoms of depression and
improved moods.
Many people tell me that they don’t have a green thumb and can’t grow a thing. I don’t believe it. It is a
matter of patience and learning. There have been years where I didn’t get flowers or a single fruit or
vegetable for my work, but I still got the stress relief of gardening and the exercise. I just had to let go of
the expectations of produce. Sometimes, a bountiful crop is out of your hands. But with learning and
practice you can grow a beautiful garden.
Some of you are limited by space. Container gardens are super easy and you can grow a lot in small
spaces. Pinterest is full of ideas for the small space gardener. In fact, if
you need some inspiration, you’ll find a ton by seeing the successes of
others.
I’ll give you a few ideas to get started.
First, join a garden club. Find an expert willing to share advice in your
neighborhood, or get a good book. In my case, an old gardener was
willing to give me all kinds of advice. He needed the attention and loved
it, and I needed his knowledge. He told me when to plant tomatoes and
when to harvest my potatoes. When my okra wasn’t producing, he said I
was pampering them too much. He shared some of his okra abundance

with me. Many communities have an extension office that offers all kinds of gardening advice.
Second, decide how much space you have to devote to a garden. Once I had a 2 by 4 foot section
behind a rental house, the church ladies came over to see it in amazement because of how much I
produced in that small space. Don’t overdo it, start small. You need a spot with good sunshine for your
containers or to dig in the ground.
Third, pick some easy to grow veggies to start with and don’t forget the flowers. Flowers bring joy to
the garden and the bees. If you have space, plant a fruit tree. You can even grow fruit trees in container
boxes.
Fourth, get to work. Don’t wait until it gets too hot and don’t jump the gun for your area.
Your garden needs some basics: good soil, water, sunlight, and love. Some areas need to amend the
soil to produce crops and some water needs adjusting. I have lived all over the United States and each
area has unique challenges in growing a home garden, but most problems can be solved.
Some of our favorite garden methods are:
Container gardening: easy on weeds, small, compact and can be moved or covered if needed to
protect against extreme weather. Perfect for a patio or porch or someone that just wants a
small garden. You can use almost anything
from expensive earth boxes to a bag of dirt
from the garden supply store (yep found that
one on Pinterest).
Square Foot Gardens: nice easy layouts and
companion planting. You maximize your
ground space.
Lasagna Gardening: no tilling, just keep
layering leaves, compost, even newspaper to
build up good garden soil similar to natural
conditions.
Traditional row gardens and anything goes.
Tower Gardens: a revolutionary idea of
aeroponics that has made gardening so easy.
I have 24 plants in a 2 foot diameter floor
space area. No weeds, no digging in the dirt.
Just plant seeds in little seed pots and put in
the Tower Garden, fill with water and
nutrients and watch it grow. I have been
picking salad green, kale, chard, collards, and
YourTrueColours Vol. Issue
M a r c h 2 0 1 5 | 26 Your True Colours
herbs all winter off my Tower Garden. The plants even grow faster due to the ideal conditions.
www.kally.towergarden.com
Everyone can grow something. This is me, just before heading
to the office. I threw on an apron, picked the veggies, picked
the greens for my smoothie, pulled a few weeds and went off
to work. A little here and there makes a difference.
Once while I lived in an apartment with limited growing
space, I had neighbors who planted watermelon and tomato
in the shrubs – we all benefited. Many communities have
community gardens. So think about getting out this spring for
your health, stress‐reducing benefits, delicious food, and
plant beauty and grow a garden. The bees and the butterflies
will thank you.

GENERALLY SPEAKING, EACH OF US HAS REMARKABLE POWER TO CHOOSE THE QUALITY OF HEALTH WE CAN ENJOY.
MUCH OF OUR HEALTH OUTCOME IS DETERMINED BY WHERE WE SPEND OUR TIME, MONEY AND ENERGY.
This article describes the long‐term benefits gained when we choose (sometimes) higher cost, higher
quality food short‐term (today). An interesting fact, however, is that it may not necessarily cost more to
consume higher quality food.
WhatistheDifferencebetweenOrganicandConventionalFood?I remember the year my family planted 15 tomato plants a few weeks too late in Montana. Toward the
end of September, anticipating a freeze soon, we pulled all the tomato plants and piled them gently in
the garage. All of the tomatoes on the plants were green; we had not yet enjoyed a single tomato that
year. But to our delight, the tomatoes ripened on the vine in the garage
and we enjoyed garden tomatoes through the end of December.
The last tomato was small, wrinkled and looked rather sad. But we
carefully cut it up and ate it. It tasted great! We could not bring ourselves
to buy a store‐bought tomato for a month; but finally we craved a tomato
enough to buy one. That first store‐bought tomato did not taste like our
last tomato. Not at all. From that time on, we call store‐bought tomatoes
'rubber' tomatoes.
Since then, I have learned much about the production and distribution
and marketing of food. Organic food does not have harmful chemicals on
it; nor do organic farmers let the chemicals into the soil and water. The
farmers who handle the food are also not exposed to those chemicals.
Ripening agents are not used with organic food. Animals are not fed
rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone), nor are they given antibiotics routinely. When we
consume food that has been grown with additives and chemicals, a percentage of what the plants and
animals consume becomes what we consume as well.
WhyisOrganicFoodMoreExpensivethanConventionalFood?Colby College students went to 5 grocery stores in their area in 2011 and found a 68% increase in cost
between organic and conventional food. Why would that be? Let's explore some reasons:
• Although supply is increasing, demand is still greater • More labor‐intensive
foto76
YourTrueColours Vol. Issue
M a r c h 2 0 1 5 | 30 Your True Colours
• Separation of organic from conventional food for processing and transportation • Marketing and distribution is still inefficient • Crop rotation practiced with organic farmers; some years the crops have low financial yield • Higher standards for animal welfare
But not everyone finds those cost factors to be the same. For example, check out
www.moneysavingmom.com, and Google how to eat organic food on a budget. You will get some great
creative ideas and learn some fun, tasty new recipes!
WhatistheCosttoSocietyforConventionalFood?Although there is much more to spraying food than just pesticides, let's examine the costs of pesticide
use.
The Textbook of Environmental Toxicology by J. Rose, printed in 2005, identified the following costs in
the US from pesticide‐related illness:
• $6,759,000 Hospitalized poisonings (2380 x 2.84 x $1000/day) • $17,010,000 Outpatient poisonings (27,000 x $630) • $1,760,000 Lost work due to poisoning (4680 x 4.7 x $80/day) • $48,400,000 Cancer treatment (12,000 x $70,700/case) • $59,400,000 Cost of fatalities (27 x $2.2 M)
The Environment, Development and Sustainability magazine, Volume 7, Issue 2 in 2005, found the
environmental and economic costs of pesticides in the US to be estimated at $10 B. These include:
pesticide impacts on public health,
livestock and livestock product losses,
increased control expenses resulting from pesticide‐related destruction of natural enemies and pests becoming pesticide resistant,
crop pollination problems and
honey bee losses,
bird, fish and other wildlife losses.
Evaluation of the Pesticide‐Induced Diseases Database (www.beyondpesticides.org/health) shows the
following links:
• Alzheimer's Disease has 4 studies, especially linking organophosphate and organochlorine exposure with AD
• Asthma has 43 studies • Birth and Fetal Defects has 19 studies • Cancer has 260 studies including brain cancer (30
studies), breast cancer (11 studies), Leukemia (40 studies), Lymphoma (46 studies), Prostate cancer (23 studies), Soft Tissue Sarcoma (7 studies), other cancers (105 studies)

Pay the Farmer (Continued)
• Developmental and Learning Disorders has 26 studies including ADHD (8 studies), autism (5 studies) • Diabetes has 6 studies
• Parkinson's Disease has 65 studies • Reproductive health effects has 22 studies The same database looked at the 40 of the most commonly
used pesticides in schools and found 28 can cause cancer,
14 are linked to endocrine disruption, 26 can adversely
affect reproduction, 26 are nervous system poisons and 13
can cause birth defects. Of the 30 most commonly used
lawn pesticides, 19 can cause cancer, 13 are linked to birth
defects, 21 can affect reproduction and 15 are nervous system toxicants.
And we haven't even talked about GMO foods and the serious risk of allergies, intestinal damage,
sterility, and death. The major crops affected today include soy (89%), cotton (83%), canola (75%), corn
(60%), Hawaiian papaya (more than 50%) and small amounts of alfalfa, zucchini, and yellow squash.
YouHaveaChoiceAs you can see, we can choose to pay the farmer who brings us wholesome, nutritious food, or
eventually pay the pharmaceutical industry to care for our illnesses.
Here is a list of my suggestions for greater nutrition and health:
• When you have a choice, choose organic (look for co‐ops like Bountiful Baskets) • Use local farmers and farmers markets • Grow your own garden and freeze excess for the winter (dice your zucchini and freeze for soups,
freeze whole tomatoes for sauces) • Fresh is best, then frozen, then old fresh and last—canned • Eat some raw (as tolerated) vegetables, lightly steamed is next best, cooked may change the
nutritional value • Free range, organic meat • Avoid processed food and sugar • Take supplements—potent multivitamin, essential fatty acids (omega 3 and omega 6), vitamin D

AFreshPerspective&PassionthatPullsYouOutofthePit,to

By AliciaNicoleWaters
IN LIFE WE MAY ENCOUNTER SEASONS OF
UNEXPECTED STORMS, FEARS OR CHALLENGES. THERE ARE TIMES WHERE WE FEEL THAT WE ARE IN THE PITS
OF POWERLESSNESS AND/OR DESPAIR WITH NO WAY
OUT. However, it is in those times that appear dismal, that something greater desires to come forth. Like diamonds or gold, they are buried in the some of the deepest and darkest parts of the earth, yet when extracted by the pressure of the mining, treasures of all kinds are released. Often, most have misunderstood their seasons of contrast, even when they've been extremely positive and/or optimistic throughout the journey. I've discovered along the way that it takes more than just positive
thinking and affirming to make it through. In fact making it through should not be the primary focus, instead, focus on changing your perspective, mindset and your way of being while in the pit‐stops of life. In 2014, Uplifting Entertainment released a movie entitled, Apple Mortgage Cake. This was an inspirational true story of a woman named Angela Logan, who decided to bake 100 apple cakes from a recipe that was passed down from her grandmother and sell them at $40 each in order to save her home from foreclosure. Angela, who was a divorced single parent mother of three teenage boys, had experienced countless setbacks throughout the years and at times felt like nothing would ever change or good things would come but would never last. At times Angela felt like giving up because she couldn't see how she was going to ever get out of her pit of powerlessness. It was in those dark moments that Angela was encouraged by others to have a fresh perspective about new beginnings along with embracing the fact that she was deserving of a better life. In this experience she discovered that she had been dismissing her gift of baking apple cakes as an opportunity to get her out of the pit, so she decided to start doing bake sales. Prior to almost losing her house, Angela was always baking her apple cakes for PTA, church and other charitable causes. She never even considered selling them.

Often, most do the same thing by overlooking the subtle aspects of everyday life and never making the connection of doing something greater with what seems to come so natural or noble to us. Even if some are operating in their gifts, most get comfortable and never take it to the next level. The pit‐stops of life are often invitations to live from a higher dimension of purpose and fulfillment. A period of refinement, awakening and reinvention helps to shift us into a fresh perspective and/or passions that we would have never even considered if the challenge would have never occurred. Angela's story spread first to the news, locally, nationally and then internationally. She is now a successful entrepreneur and business owner of Apple Mortgage Cakes whose motto is fighting foreclosure one cake at a time. We each have an apple mortgage cake, that subtle stroke of brilliance that is waiting to come forth in a greater way. This is the season of birthing the greatest you ever, starting with a fresh new perspective for life, passion and purpose. Like Angela, allow your passion to pull you out of your pit for reclaiming your personal power to profit and to prosper.

HowtoMatchColorsandPatternsOfYourTie,ShirtAndSuit
MatchingtheColorsofATieWithASuitAndShirts
Make sure, that at least one color in your tie matches or is of same origin of either your suit or a shirt color. Contrasting colors may be combined together, but the easiest way is to harmonize the same, only different saturation colors. Of course if you wear white color shirts, only the colors of a tie and a suit should be matched. Thus, this is most convenient and straightforward way. However you will hardly make your appearance adorned, but it rather will become boring, if often wearing white color shirts.
MatchingthePatternsofaTieWithaSuitandShirts Our advice is to avoid exaggerating as to using a suit, shirts and a tie with the same type of patterns: like wearing a striped shirt with a striped tie and striped suit. Matching three similar patterns together is rarely a winning combination. As a general rule you can wear a micro-check shirt with a checked patterned tie, as long as the patterns aren't identical in their size. Your safest way is matching plaid shirts with a solid or polka dot tie that matches one of the colors in the shirts plaid pattern. The best choice of
wearing luxury or intensive and colorful floral pattern ties will be together with your plain color shirts or with ultimately small pattern shirts.
MatchingtheSizesofaTiewithaJacket Tie and suit. Tied tie should be long enough to reach the lower limit of the belt buckle. In general the front part does not protrude the narrow end of the tie. If this happens, it is advisable to tie the end under shirt, tucked beneath them using the space between the buttons – all this to avoid creasing.

YOHO,YOHO:APIRATE-FLAGPRIMER
By TyrelTjoelker

WHILE THE JOLLY ROGER FLAG IS ROMANTICIZED IN MODERN TIMES, ITS ORIGINAL MEANING MAY SHIVER
YOUR TIMBERS—LET’S LOOK AT WHY PIRATE FLAGS HAVE A BLACK BACKGROUND, WHICH PIRATE FLEW THE
CLASSIC SKULL‐AND‐CROSSBONES FLAG, AND MORE!
WHYISITCALLEDTHE“JOLLYROGER”?There are several different theories on this one; here are four of the most popular:
1. Pirates often flew a red flag (more on that later), which the French called the Joli Rouge. This term may have been corrupted into English as “Jolly Roger,” which became a generic term for black pirate flags over time.
2. “Jolly Roger” might be a play on the term “Old Roger”—a term for the devil—combined with “Jolly” because of the skull’s grin.
3. In Elizabethan English, “roger” (coming from the word “rogue”) was a slang term for beggars and vagabonds. This could be the source, since pirates were often referred to as sea beggars.
4. “Jolly Roger” could be a corruption of the Tamil title Ali Raja, which means King of the Sea.
All said, no one really knows why it’s called the Jolly Roger. But we do have evidence showing that pirate flags have been called Jolly Rogers for quite some time.
WHYDOPIRATEFLAGSHAVEABLACKBACKGROUND?Traditionally, a black flag signifies quarantine and disease. Pirates likely chose it as their flag’s base to strike fear into their adversaries. Many pirates even opted for a plain black flag without a design at all.
While the most well‐known pirate flag is the white skull and crossbones on a black background, not all pirate flags had a black background. In fact, many used red instead.
YourTrueColours Vol. Issue
M a r c h 2 0 1 5 | 44 Your True Colours
The difference between the two? It’s said that pirates would give quarter when flying under a black flag, but not when flying under a red. Whatever the case, the flag’s color held a lot of meaning.
WHICHFAMOUSPIRATESACTUALLYFLEWTHESKULLANDCROSSBONES?Many pirates were known for their flags, but the classic skull and crossbones are typically associated with Samuel “Black Sam” Bellamy and Edward England.
Samuel Bellamy was an English pirate who captured at least 53 ships during little more than a year of piracy. This made him the wealthiest pirate in history, before his death at age 28. His nickname, Black Sam, comes from his decision to forgo a powdered wig in favor of growing out his long black hair. Bellamy was known for showing mercy and generosity to those he captured, earning the nickname “Prince of Pirates.” He imagined himself as Robin Hood.
Edward England was also known for his good nature and unusual kindness, and didn’t believe in torture except as a last resort. However, his good nature didn’t sit well with his crew, who eventually marooned him on an island with three others. Despite escaping the island after four months—on a boat he built himself—England soon died, most likely from a tropical disease.

ON MARCH 2ND OF 1904 IN SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS THEODOR
SEUSS GEISEL ARRIVED IN THIS WORLD. GEISEL WOULD EVENTUALLY GROW
UP INTO ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL AUTHORS IN THE WORLD OF
CHILDREN’S LITERATURE. Because of his great desire for literacy his
birthday has become Read Across America Day, Dr. Seuss, one of
the most quoted authors, his works are used to teach reading and
utilized well into adulthood.
Theodor Geisel was born to Theodor Robert and Henrietta (Seuss)
Geisel. He credits his mother for his talent for rhyme. He attended
Dartmouth and later Oxford, but left Oxford without obtaining his PhD. He returned to the US to pursue
his drawing career. Geisel’s first children’s book, “And To Think That I saw It on Mulberry Street,” filled
with memories of his childhood home of Springfield, was rejected 27 time until Vangaurd Press took a
chance with him. “The Cat in the Hat,” Geisel’s most defining book, was “developed as part of a unique
joint venture between Houghton Mifflin (Vanguard Press) and Random House. Houghton Mifflin asked
Ted to write and illustrate a children’s primer using only 225 “new‐reader” vocabulary words. Because he
was under contract to Random House, Random House obtained the trade publication rights, and
Houghton Mifflin kept the school rights
(catinthehat.org).”
By the time of his death in September of 1991,
Geisel had written and illustrated 44 children’s
books, translated into 15 languages, and published
over 200 million copies all over the world. During
his career, Dr. Seuss has incurred two Academy
Awards, two Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, and
the Pulitzer Prize.

FifteenMinutestoOrganized….
ByDarleneIllig
PhotosbyDarleneIllig
TIME IS SOMETHING IN SHORT SUPPLY THESE DAYS.
IT SEEMS AS IF WE CAN BARELY KEEP UP WITH THE
NECESSITIES MUCH LESS ANYTHING ELSE. Amongst
the clutter of our homes we long for organization
but have no idea where we would find that kind of
time or energy!
I bet you could find fifteen minutes in your day.
This is all it takes to get your life more organized. I
was always under the impression I needed to
devote an entire day to cleaning up and clearing
out the stuff in my home so I didn’t bother
because I sure didn’t have that much time.
Then one day, I became tired of looking at the
growing pile of mail sitting on my kitchen counter
and decided to do something about it. While
preparing dinner, I began to rummage through the
pile and quickly become inspired when I realized how much I had accomplished in only fifteen minutes. I
did the same thing the following day and the by the end of the week I could see the kitchen counter.
Success!!! I took this same approach to other areas of my home that had bothered me because of their
lack of functionality; the sock drawer, the plastic cupboard, the medicine cabinet, my purse, the car, etc.
I am going to share with you my simple formula for completing small projects in fifteen minutes. The
first and most important step is to eliminate distraction. Remembering that you are only going to be
unavailable for fifteen minutes you must silence all of your electronic gadgets. If you have small
children, find something for them to do while you are working. NO distractions!!
Now, set the timer for fifteen minutes. I use the timer on the microwave. If you need to, use the timer
on your phone. This is the only technology allowed.
The next step is to remove all items from this space. I must confess, this is my favorite part and I get a
little dramatic with it. Seriously, it is energizing to see this wide open space. It opens a portal that you
had closed off with stuff blocking it. After this the process becomes a sorting game. This is the biggest
consumer of time so I use three categories; keep, toss and donate. To be most effective you may only
YourTrueColours Vol. Issue
M a r c h 2 0 1 5 | 52 Your True Colours
keep that which is useful to you. If it is too big, too small, not your style or just doesn’t make you happy,
toss it. Toss anything that is broken. Donate those things that don’t fit or that you have multiples of.
When you create a donate pile it is really important to get those items out of your house as quickly as
possible so you aren’t tempted by cleaning remorse. I like to call and arrange a donation pickup before I
even begin the project. Since the clock is ticking it should be the first thing that comes to mind when you
hold up an item. Go with your gut, no time to over analyze. Should you come across something that you
are having a hard time making a decision about put it in a different area and come back to it. The object
is to have as few items as possible in this pile.
Once you have made the tough decisions it is time to organize that space in a way that makes it
functional. Truly a functional space is a happy space for you. I suggest you put everything away so the
things you are keeping have a place. As you put the items back into the space do so in a way that makes
this space user friendly for you. If you don’t you will just go back to disorganized and cluttered all over
again. Keep like items together and put things that make sense here. You wouldn’t put your earrings in
the medicine cabinet would you?
As an option to pretty up the space you can use organizer accessories. A word of caution, don’t let the
organizer be just another clutter keeper. The accessories should be useful to your organizing goal in a
way that makes the space work for you.
Becoming organized doesn’t have to take large chunks of time. By starting out with small projects using
small amounts of time you will feel better about yourself and your space. In no time you will be looking
for your next project. There will be no stopping you because the feeling you get when you complete a
project is its own reward. I encourage you to have fun and take lots of before/after pictures to detail
your progress.

vision, cataracts, glaucoma, age spots, acne, eczema, etc. Oh and, twenty years of research proves
eating foods rich in beta carotene gives us actual anti‐cancer protection.
Chlorophyll: Helps remove toxins from the blood, literally acting as a blood cleanser, suppling the
nutrients our bodies need to detox naturally and enabling the removal of toxins. As if it couldn’t get any
better, chlorophyll also oxygenates the blood.

Antioxidants: Spirulina
provides more antioxidant
power than 5 servings of
fruits and vegetables and 4x
more than blueberries.
Folate (known in the
synthetic world as Folic
Acid): This food based
vitamin is crucial for proper
brain function, mental and
emotional health and is
especially important during
high growth periods (such as
infancy, adolescence and
pregnancy)
Phytonutrients: Comparing phytonutrient levels, Spirulina is 31 times more potent than blueberries and
60 times more potent than spinach!
Prebiotics: These fiber compounds literally act as food for beneficial gut flora like lactobacillus and
bifidobacteria, improving your digestion and bowel function by encouraging the colonization of “the
good guys" which simultaneously discouraging the growth of pathonogenic bacteria.
Spirulina contains many other nutrients such manganese, zinc, copper, selenium, and chromium and
B12.

Sari Foods are 100% Food

Organic Arcerola Cherries.
The Natural Vitamin C in One
Acerola Cherry = 65 Oranges!
Why choose food based over
synthetic Vitamin C?
Many Vitamin C supplements
(like ascorbic acid and
calcium ascorbate) contain
isolated and/or synthetic
vitamin C that is highly acidic,
toxic, causes nutrient
imbalances and forces your
kidneys and liver to work overtime while your body struggles to absorb them.
Natural vitamin C, on the other hand, is a complete complex, containing a variety of antioxidants,
vitamins and minerals that work together in harmony, making it both absorbable and effective. In fact,
Natural Vitamin C is so bioavailable that it even lasts up to 24 times longer in your body! Hint: Vitamin C
never occurs as an isolate in nature for a reason.
From deep in the jungle of Brazil, our organic Acerola cherries provide the richest source of vitamin C of
any existing food source ‐ and now you can enjoy the intense antioxidant benefits of this 100% whole
food Vitamin C, just as nature intended!
PRIORITIZE LONG TERM HEALTH WITH NATURAL OVER SYNTHETIC. Many Vitamin C supplements (like
ascorbic acid and calcium ascorbate) contain isolated and/or synthetic vitamin C that is highly toxic and
may cause you more harm than good. Sari Foods 100% food based vitamin C is nature’s complete
complex, providing you with all of the benefits of this miracle vitamin without compromising your body

REDUCE THE SEVERITY & DURATION OF COLDS. Natural Vitamin C is the missing piece of the puzzle to
your body’s immune system, offering protection against colds and flu and reducing the threat of every
virus known to man. Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine which means it even helps keep allergies,
asthma and inflammation in check!
TURN BACK TIME. Sari Foods Vitamin C plays an important role in collagen production and cell
regeneration, anti‐aging’s two greatest secrets, helping to reduce wrinkles as your skin retains greater
elasticity and firmness.
PROTECT YOURSELF. With extreme antioxidant activity, Organic Vitamin C fights free radicals, protecting
you from the cell‐damaging molecules absorbed by the body through pollution, poor diet, injury, or
stress. Sufficient levels of vitamin C are also required for the synthesis of stress hormones (like
adrenaline), which plays a crucial role in countering the ill effects of stress.
GUARD AGAINST DISEASE. Since our body doesn’t produce it, natural Vitamin C is the most important
vitamin you can consume for optimal health as it is shown to help prevent, reduce, and sometimes
reverse degenerative diseases including:
Cancer ‐ With powerful antioxidant properties, Vitamin C protects cells and their DNA from damage and
mutation, reducing the risk of getting almost all types of cancer.
Diabetes ‐ Helps to regulate blood sugar levels and improves circulation and blood flow.
Heart disease ‐ Prevents free radicals from damaging artery walls, which could lead to the formation of
plaque and keeps cholesterol from oxidizing in the bloodstream by boosting its conversion to bile salts
which can be easily eliminated from the body.
Arthritis ‐ Encourages the production of collagen which helps to reduce pain, inflammation and swelling
of joints.
Alzheimer’s ‐ According to a German study, the levels of Vitamin C and beta‐carotene in the blood were
found to be lower in patients with dementia than in people without it, suggesting that boosting vitamin
C levels may help in reducing the progression of neurological conditions.

WhenAdversityStrikes
By LaTiaMcNeely‐Sandiford,MSW
TheAdversityExpert
AT SOME POINT IN ALL OF OUR LIVES, EACH OF US WILL
EXPERIENCE ADVERSITY. Adversity, like fat, does not
discriminate and often attaches itself to areas where we
are most vulnerable. So, what is adversity? Adversity can
be summed up as life’s pesky little nuances that create
barriers preventing people from moving forward – a
problem long associated with the inner city. As such,
adversity gets a bad rap, but the truth is, adversity is a
chameleon and changes its stripes to fit its target.
Adversity strikes everyone, no matter their race, creed,
color or socioeconomic status. For some, adversity
presents as a life event, circumstance, environmental
factor, person or food. Yes, for many, food can be an
adversity. For instance, if you’re fat, cheesecake (my
personal favorite) at 11:00 pm is ‘adverse’ to the trim body
that I aspire to build. Thus, cheesecake becomes an
adversity that I must overcome to achieve my goal of
getting back into my size 10’s. Does that sound familiar?
Of course it does because adversity is required song of
which we all must learn the lyrics.
The process of overcoming adversity is one’s own willingness to give up the right to be sedentary.
Overcoming adversity means taking control of your ending and waging war on anything or anyone that
poses a threat to your success. In order to arrive at your divine purpose in life, you must experience the
trials by which you gain your stripes. Think of adversity as the ‘school of hard knocks’ of which we are all
students. The best students approach the difficulties of life with a pen and a pad eager to learn the
associated lesson. Simply stated, adversity is necessary for us to develop into well‐rounded human beings
with the potential of leading others. As humans, fallible in all our ways, we can only acquire the tools we
need by going through things. The lessons learned through life’s hardest times are those that shape and
make us. Those of us who learn, make better choices and those of us who don’t, make excuses. Adversity
separates the experienced from the inexperienced, the young from the old and wise from the foolish. So,
the next time adversity strikes strike back and claim your victory! However, when all else fails, eat a piece
of cheesecake because cheesecake makes everything better.

SHARE Agencywith Foundersand Partners; SherriHenleyand CherylMalik
WHEN INVITED TO SPOTLIGHT ISHARE AGENCY AND EXPERTS, I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED CHERYL MALIK
WHO IS THE FOUNDING PARTNER OF ISHARE, WHILE MAINTAINING AUTONOMY AS AN ISHARE EXPERT IN
HER FIELD OF INFLUENCE THROUGH 40 APRONS. iSHARE would not look the same (literally…as Cheryl is
the iSHARE Creative Director) without the two of us working in tandem…because…well…Together WE
are Stronger!
When I reflect on the story of iSHARE Agency…from its infancy until now…with over 20 experts and
growing…I am reminded of the moment the “idea” was formed. I had been working with several clients
through my business; Sherri Henley Intelligence (SHI), who needed services beyond my expertise that
tied into their “intelligence package.” Having access to many experts through my business; Business
Over Coffee International (BOCI)…I picked up the mobile device and began to pull together teams for
various projects. One striking resemblance to each team was a varied assembly of experts working
together to create a dynamic, over the top package including project management, brand development
and speakers’ bureau.
Waking from sleep I was reminded of a former BOCI Monthly Event hosted by YTC’s Carolyn Bendall
(who is also an iSHARE Expert); SHARE. Being a poet by nature, the acronym, S.H.A.R.E: Sherri Henley
Agency of Renowned Experts – flashed before my eyes. My first instinct has proven to be the right
move…contacting Cheryl Malik to discuss this possibility. That was the defining moment of iSHARE
Agency…the rest is history. Oh wait! Why the “i?” An interchangeable letter for “internet –
representing global,” “intelligence – representing expertise,” and “international – representing bi‐
lingual.” And, of course…our tagline is, “Bringing Experts Together,” a spin off the BOCI brand; “Bringing
Everyone Together.”
Being a weekly host on BOCI Radio, it was a natural progression to proceed “interview style” with
Cheryl…sharing her side of the story of iSHARE Agency since inception:

Q ‐ Sherri: Tell us about yourself and your business... A ‐ Cheryl: I am a web designer, photographer, and food blogger living in Memphis, Tennessee. Several years back, I ended up in law school, despite my hesitations, and realized I simply couldn't work in a non‐creative industry for the rest of my life. My parents met as computer programmers in the early 80s, so I grew up with tech and started "coding" for fun when I was about 9 or 10, before CSS was around! Somehow, I found myself designing and developing websites for clients after I had made the decision to try entrepreneurship full‐time, and things have simply grown from there. My photography skills came from teaching myself how to improve my food blog photos, which catapulted my blog, 40 Aprons, to heights I had not before thought possible. Google Analytics is telling me that yesterday people from 67 different countries visited my site! I'm fascinated by the global reach I have with the blogging platform, and I know that my photography is a huge reason for that influence. Q ‐ Sherri: Tell the audience about our first encounter at The University of Memphis; Fogelman College of Business and Economics... A ‐ Cheryl: After I quit law school, I realized I had a‐‐relatively‐speaking‐‐fairly useless degree in Philosophy and not much else, academically, to help me find a great job. Now, I firmly believe that my Philosophy studies helped develop my cognitive approach, problem‐solving, and nuanced logic, but that is certainly not what a hiring partner wants to see! So I decided to work towards my MBA at the University of Memphis Fogelman College of Business and Economics. I had been fairly interested in a healthcare management concentration, but I realized the reasoning was identical to that which led me to law school: for the "good jobs", the "good pay", the dependability. So I made another last‐minute decision to opt out of those healthcare classes‐‐"for now"‐‐and signed up for an Entrepreneurship elective instead, led by Dr. France Fabian. Dr. Fabian invited successful local entrepreneurs to speak to the class often, so we could listen to their stories, pick their brains, and‐‐as was my case‐‐be inspired by the reality of entrepreneurship that they presented. Sherri Henley was one of those entrepreneurs, and when she found out I was a blogger, she asked me to speak with her about a potential collaboration! Q ‐ Sherri: Tell us about your internship in the Professional Boost Program with BOCI: A ‐ Cheryl: At this point, each step I took away from law led me closer and closer to entrepreneurship, though I might not have recognized it at the time. I came to BOCI headquarters to discuss a potential internship with Sherri, and I was excited by the idea that I could work‐‐as me, not as someone's employee‐‐with others and that I had something in‐demand to offer. Not long after I accepted the Professional Boost Program (PBP) internship, I quit my job‐‐to which I had never been attached to begin with‐‐and dove into the work with BOCI, taking absolute advantage of Sherri and all the members for their entrepreneurship expertise and guidance. I firmly believe that if I had not been involved in the PBP, I would not have had a clue where to start in developing a successful business of my own, and I fear that I might even be back in a traditional 9‐to‐5! I am not stingy in how often I claim that I owe most‐‐if not all‐‐of my success to Sherri and BOCI. Q ‐ Sherri: Explain how you became the iSHARE Founding Partner... A ‐ Cheryl: Since my work as a PBP intern, Sherri and I had continued working together on various projects, from developing her own sites, to working as a subcontractor on clients she brought in with her social media intelligence training business, SHI. We knew we worked well together and that we offered something rare‐‐a balance of shiny, new, young tech and deeply respected experience and knowledge. I think we both began to see that our work together with clients could continue to grow, and I remember vividly the day that Sherri called me to discuss a little idea she had to essentially formalize what we had been doing. I immediately started bubbling with ideas and dreams for that
YourTrueColours Vol. Issue
M a r c h 2 0 1 5 | 64 Your True Colours
possibility, and basically, iSHARE was formed! I kept waiting for Sherri to call me and tell me she was thinking of backing out, or perhaps it "was not the right time", but I should have known‐‐when two ambitious women get together, there is no looking back! Q ‐ Sherri: How do you foresee iSHARE Agency evolving? A ‐ Cheryl: One of my favorite things about iSHARE is that because it is not a traditional agency, it can keep evolving. I think this is what sets us apart. When iSHARE truly began, we somewhat compartmentalized our services, but since then, we have brought on so many experts and have truly understood how to implement each expertise and service, that iSHARE, to us, can work for nearly any project. I envision iSHARE growing in the Speakers' Bureau department, as well as possibly developing a somewhat specialized branch of our brand development and project management. Q ‐ Sherri: What is it like working with so many experts? A ‐ Cheryl: I would almost say it was a bit overwhelming at first, until I realized that I too am one of the experts! There is really so much pride in having such true knowledge available to us at any moment, rather than a few people who know a little about a lot. Instead, we have 25 people who know everything about their chosen subject. I would take that over the "jack of all trades, master of none" approach any day. Q ‐ Sherri: How does it feel to be the Founding Partner of iSHARE with one of the iSHARE experts being your former Professor in college; Dr. Frances Fabian? A ‐ Cheryl: If you had only told me, when I signed up for Dr. Fabian's class! My gratitude to Dr. Fabian for her genuine interest in her students' success will never wane. Q ‐ Sherri: Did you know Dr. Frances Fabian graduated from Harvard? A ‐ Cheryl: I did! Did you know she received her PhD from the University of Texas in Austin, where I went to law school (albeit briefly)? Q ‐ Sherri: How should someone contact you? A ‐ Cheryl: [email protected] Q ‐ Sherri: Leave us with closing tips for entrepreneurs and students finding their way...what would be your advice? A ‐ Cheryl: If you know you are truly interested in entrepreneurship, find a way to take that leap. You will never be satisfied by working for someone else, and if you find the right network of mentors, you will find a way to succeed. That does not mean you should jump without looking! Take some time and inventory what you love and what you do well‐‐if your skills are ready for the world now, great! If you need to spruce them up a bit before depending on them for income, take the time now, while you have a reliable job or class schedule, so you can feel confident when it is show time. A – Sherri: To answer your question…No, Cheryl…I did not know you and iSHARE Expert, Dr. Fabian attended the same University. Small world – BIG opportunities! To contact iSHARE Agency, write to [email protected], 5865 Ridgeway Center Pkwy, Suite 300, 38120, 901.820.4469. Contact Sherri Henley directly: [email protected]. 4TipstoStayFocusedonYourStrategy
By JuliaColon
PhotosbyFreeDigitalPhotos.net
STARTING A HOME BASED BUSINESS IS VERY EXCITING. WE CAN’T
WAIT TO GET STARTED. One of the ways of promoting your business
is the traditional way of face‐to‐face, having a booth, handing out
brochures door to door, etc… The other option you have is to use
social media (strategy) to promote your business. However, with
other responsibilities such as a job, children, and house hold chores
etc… can keep us distracted, overwhelmed, and frustrated. So
finding the time to take your business to where you want it to be
can crucial. In order to prevent this you will need to prioritize your
responsibilities. .
This article is created to assist you with some tips to stay focused
on your business strategy should you wish to promote online. So you ask “What Strategy”. I am
referring to social media strategies like YouTube, Facebook, blogging etc...
Below are some ways to help you determine a strategy that may best suite you.
If you like Your Strategy May Be
If you like speaking YouTube If you like writing Blogging If you are analytical Ads (Pay Per Click) Once you determine your strategy the next step is to stay focused on that strategy.
1. Choose One Marketing Strategy. a. If you are utilizing multiple marketing strategies without learning the full scope of your
chosen one then you will delay your results. You will find yourself all over the place and overwhelmed.
b. Commit yourself to that one strategy, and learn everything about it. Make yourself accountable to learning this strategy for your business.
c. You should refrain from attending webinars, watch video tutorials, read emails etc...that do not pertain to the strategy of your choice. This will delay your results and will you be engaging in non profit producing activity.
2. Do More Of The Same Thing a. Your business will most likely require that you create content. If this is the case then do
more of it while you’re at it. Meaning if you are feeling creative and your strategy is
jesadaphorn

videos then don’t just do one. Do more. Take advantage of that creative mode at the moment. Once you’re done, you can schedule / publish them for a future date. If you are using Facebook then schedule your content (videos, blogs etc…) for a future dates and time as well.
3. Focus on Profit Producing Activities in the morning
a. Start with your agenda. This should be prepared the night before, and stay focused on that agenda. Your agenda could be creating content to generate leads, sharing products on social media sites, calling your leads from the days before etc…
b. When you are finished with your profit producing activities then you should return calls from that day, read emails, and go to your social media sites. Whatever it is your follow up should be done after you finish with your profit producing activities for the morning.
4. Decide if a new strategy that is introduced to you is beneficial to you and your business. a. For example: If you are strictly learning How to Use YouTube, then it’s not
recommended to learn Twitter. It may seem exciting, but you will need to determine if it is beneficial to you, and if you can commit to that new opportunity. Your experiences
and your gut feeling will help you determine if the timing is right for you. Learning every day is rewarding and has its benefits. So why not be the Go‐To Person for that strategy.
“Just something for you to think about”
Throughout my year of building my home based business this was one of the most important and beneficial topics I learned. It has helped me with managing my time. I’m honored to share these tips with you, and hope it encourages you to continue believing in yourself and your abilities. We all have busy schedules, but if you put to practice these four tips and committing yourself to your business (even if it’s a little a day) will go a long way. Focus on your goals for 2015 and at end of the year you will see results as long as you commit.

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE
YOU SAT OR STOOD IN
FRONT OF YOUR COLLECTION
OF MAKEUP AND SKINCARE
AND SAID "AAAAHHHH
WHAT IS ALL THIS? Do you
look at your collection and
see old worn out cases and
used up lipstick that you
are digging into the cap to
get the last little bit of
color. Does your compact
look like it took a trip in
your child's backpack to
school and back 600 times!
Or do you go into the drugstore or Sephora and stand there and wonder overwhelmingly "what do I
need to look like me"? BB creams, CC creams, moisturizers, concealers, bronzers, highlighters, serums,
eye gels, creams, balms and exfoliators! AHHHH Scary! Which one do I need? I don't have a clue!
Well, have no fear the makeup and skincare scholar is here! First of all we all don't have time to use all
of these products and cosmetics in one day. We are busy and maybe get 5 minutes to apply one or two
skincare items and maybe some makeup if we are lucky.
With the overwhelming amount of products and cosmetics out there how does the average woman who
isn't trained in cosmetics or skincare pick what she needs? Well here is my solution.
Start with the clean‐up of your cosmetic bag, vanity, drawer, cupboard or wherever you store your
things. Go through each item and throw out anything that is over two years old, except mascara throw
out if it is 4 months ‐ 6 months old. You ideally should replace mascara every 3‐4 months. Any product
that is hitting the bottom of its container, looks dry or smells waxy, should go bye‐bye.
Generally a basic routine would be: a cleanser, a toner and a moisturizer followed by an eye cream. This
is your basic skincare product lineup. So the first thing to do is determine if your skin is dry, oily, normal,
ccombination or very sensitive and reactive:
If your skin feels dry right after you wash it, you can assume you are dry.
yingyo
YourTrueColours Vol. Issue

If your skin looks a little or a lot shiny or feels a little oily about 1 to 2 hours after you wash you
can assume you are combination or very sensitive and reactive.
If your skin looks a little or a lot shiny or feels a little oily about 1 to 2 hours after you wash it,
especially on the cheeks, it is probably oily.
If you have the shine in the t‐zone of your face and your cheeks are dry, then you would be
combination.
If your skin feels smooth and comfortable most of the time it is normal. Sensitive or reactive skin
would be someone whose skin reacts to products, weather, food, or sun with a rash, breakout
or redness.
Once you can determine your skin type, then you can purchase the bare minimum mentioned above to
start your skincare regime. When you have established a regular routine, you can add one additional
item to supplement your skincare, if you like or feel you need it. Items I am referring to would be, an
exfoliator, a mask, a serum, a brightener, a vitamin C product or an additional cleanser.
Take your time getting used to your new routine before adding anything new. Once you decide to add a
new product, add one at a time for about two weeks before adding any others. This way you can see
how it coordinates with your other products and how your skin reacts to it. If you add too many new
products at one time and have a reaction or a result, you will not know which one caused it or gave you
the good news.

The Makeup Twilight Zone (Continued)
Now that you have your skincare in place, it is time for our basic makeup lineup. First of all determine if
you would like to wear a foundation of some kind on your skin. There are benefits to foundation. It
protects the skin from the elements of weather; wind, sun, and cold. All of which have an undesired
effect on the skin. Years of wearing nothing on the face is like going out without a coat in the cold, your
skin can become weathered, wrinkled, dull and red and look a little like leather, yes really. Think of it as
a coat for your face.
There are solutions to the foundation dilemma. There are so many women who do not like the full
coverage formulas, so for all of you out there that do not, here is a solution: BB Cream or CC Cream. I
know, what is that!!!
The latest trend in abbreviated names of products is somewhat like reading your child’s texting
abbreviations and realizing they might be speaking a language from another planet, but no one knows
what planet or how they learned it!
Mystery solved, the BB Cream is
abbreviation for Beauty Balm, and
all that means is that it contains a
moisturizer, a sunscreen and a
slight tint depending on the brand.
A CC Cream is abbreviation for
color corrector, which has a light
moisturizer, some illumination,
light diffusing particles to even out
the skin tone and sometimes an
antioxidant like vitamin c to
improve skin brightness. When you do use one of these, do not use it in place
of your moisturizer, but to supplement it. This product is for convenience and
really is not to replace your skincare products.
So hopefully this solves some of the mystery of the BB and CC phenomena. I
can't help you with your children’s texting language because I never really
figured out my own children’s!
The next foundation option could be powder, but the problem with only powder is, unless you
moisturize well and get a nice finely milled powder it can look dry. So for many women they opt for the
standard liquid coverage foundation, which does give you a very flawless look if you choose the right
formula and protects your skin from the elements. There are many formulas though and it is best to
have your skin matched at a department store makeup counter where they are familiar with different
skin tones and formulas of foundation.

Let's go over the basic makeup list, now that we have covered foundation. The basics are, foundation,
concealer, blush, one to two eye shadow colors, a light and medium, mascara, lipstick or gloss and if you
want a little more expansion on your look add a pencil eyeliner. This is the very basic and it can all fit
into one makeup bag. Once you have mastered this basic look and group of products then slowly add
one more item at a time into your new makeup bag. Pretty soon the makeup Twilight Zone will only be a
mere memory of the past!

“I was born with travel in my blood,”
says Lisa Rossmeissl, CEO of
Boomerang Escapes. Having traveled
since birth, the always adventurous
free spirit has turned her passion for
people and adaptability to change into
a successful business and fascinating
way of life. She prides herself on
making sure that couples and families
return to their ‘happy place.’ It’s not just what she does. It’s who she is. This is not your typical travel
agency, and Lisa is definitely not your typical travel agent.
If you’ve ever wanted to travel abroad, Lisa and her knowledgeable team of consultants are more than
capable of providing you with the ultimate vacation experience. Imagine yourself on a romantic getaway
on a secluded Caribbean beach or a family oriented atmosphere complete with exotic animals and deep
sea fishing. The possibilities are endless. And, with Lisa at the helm, you have the benefit of receiving
professional guidance from someone who can provide you with a first‐hand account of what to expect.
Her descriptions are more than just words in a brochure. She’s toured the cities, tasted the cuisine,
inspected the properties and embraced the
various cultures.
It only takes one word to evoke Lisa’s big,
beautiful smile. Australia! Since she was a
child, she has always been fascinated by all
things related to it. She wrote about Australia
for school reports. She found it to be an
interesting culture and fell in love with their
exotic animals, especially the koala. Her room
was filled with stuffed animals, with the koala
leading the pack. She even had a koala latch
hook rug.
Though she has always had this love for travel
and Australia specifically, it wasn’t until 2008
that she was introduced to the travel industry

and became an agent. In 2010,
however, she came across Tourism
Australia’s website and entered
their Aussie specialist program. A
year later, she was offered the
lifetime opportunity to travel to
Australia for a tour, followed by
Corroboree (A gathering of agents
and operators for intense product
training and fun). This would prove
to be one of many certifications to
come for Lisa. Shortly after her
arrival to Sydney, she was able to
see and hold a koala. The rest, as
they say, is history!

Return to Your Happy Place (Continued)
Australia is obviously Lisa’s first love. But, the South Pacific and New Zealand are very close to her heart
as well. The best part? She’s a heavily certified and trained specialist in these countries. Among her long
list of trainings include Cook Island Specialist, Fiji Mata Specialist, Tassie Specialist, Tassie
Walking,Specialist, Air New Zealand Vacations South Pacific Specialist Program, Down Under Answers
Specialist Program, AAT Kings Australia and New Zealand Specialist Program and Brendan Academy
Australia and New Zealand. In addition, Lisa has multiple certifications in Europe, as well as cruises and
all inclusive travel. Vacations to Hawaii and the Caribbean islands are additional options.
Sometimes, individuals feel they can’t afford
to take a vacation. Or, they are overwhelmed
with the idea of planning such an event.
Boomerang Escapes’ motto is “no
worries...leave the planning to us!” Lisa is
proud to refer to her business as a small
boutique agency. Meaning, they are
interested in connecting client’s needs, wants
and desires for their ideal vacation with the
right agent. They are not a large corporation
with the intent of pushing a specific product
or service. They are directly accessible to their
clients. Each consultant’s individual travels,
life experiences and extensive training provides Boomerang Escapes with a unique personal and
professional benefit for the clients they serve.
Planning a vacation with Lisa means walking you through every aspect of planning an affordable and
stress free itinerary of fun and adventure. In includes step by step consultation, welcome emails,
complete documentation and explanation regarding travel and a follow up of your vacation experience.
For Lisa, creating the right package and maintaining customer satisfaction before, during and after the
vacation is especially important.
Lisa Rossmeissl is a true example of doing what you love and
loving what you do. The wife and mother of three teenagers
strongly advises people to travel today and not tomorrow. She
often shares the story of a sweet woman in her sixties who had
planned to do some traveling with her husband after they retired.
Shortly after retirement, her husband was diagnosed with kidney
failure and ended up on dialysis. Remember, tomorrow is not
promised. Expand your horizons. Seize the opportunity to enjoy
life’s adventures today. mailto:[email protected] http://www.boomerangescapes.com

Coaching: Spiritual Laughter Workshop: It’s My Life, What Do I Do With It?
Programs: Conflict Resolution
Our Essential Elements Collection is designed for “Prime Time Women”. Who are they? They’re the women who have reached a point in their lives (not necessary related to age) where they know what they want, and expect to get it. They have paid their dues through dedication to their careers and their families. They are leaders in their field and leaders in their community.
We are highlighting several of these women each year for their sense of style and, more importantly, for their sensitivity to the welfare of others. In recognition of Memphis, Tennessee’s designation as the Birthplace of the Blues and the Home of Rock and Roll, we are naming these our Rockin’ Role Models.
We’re going to let you peek into their daily lives so you can see how they roll. These dynamic women pack more into their days than most, still take the time to look fabulous, and take steps to stay at the top of their game. Then we’re going to tell why they ROCK!
Our March 2015 Rockin’ Role Model is attorney Debra Chaves Norwood. Meet Debra on the next few pages.
Rockin’ Role Models
Debra Chaves NorwoodOur March 2015 Rockin’ Role Model
As most of our Rockin’ Role Models, Debra wears many hats, she is wife of Dan Norwood, also an attorney, and mother to four children of her own. However, as her daughter Caroline told us, she has always had around eight children she was raising at any given time.” Debra is such a caring person, and her kind and compassionate nature, coupled with her education, expertise, and commitment to helping others has helped her initiate several “firsts” that have changed the landscape for many organizations and individuals.
Debra earned a B.S., graduating with honors from Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA and earned her Doctor of Law degree from the Cecil B. Humphries School of Law at University of Memphis. Early in her career she served as the Director of the Tennessee Language Project/General Sessions Court where she created the first interpreter pilot project for judiciary interpreters for the state of Tennessee. Her law firm oversaw the training in judiciary interpreting and ethics for over 80 interpreters in 10 languages. The initiative resulted in a certification program that was replicated in several municipalities and is now run by the Administrative Office of the Supreme Court of Tennessee ( AOC). Later, she served as Chief Legal Counsel for the Native American Inter-tribal Association to help protect the French Fort Area, an initiative that led to the State operating with caution in public constructions sites which unearth remains. As a Board Member and International Humanitarian Law Instructor for the Mid-South Chapter of the American Red Cross, she created the first International Humanitarian Law Conference in Memphis co-sponsored by the Memphis Bar Association, the Norwood Law Firm and the JAG Corps from the Millington Naval Base. Since 2012 she has been a part of the lawfirm of Norwood & Atchley in Lexington, TN. In addition she is the legal council for the Fashion Academy, and the Executive Producer for Look Good, Feel Good Productions.
Debra and daughter Caroline
Debra and hubby Dan Norwood. Dan, on a birthday post on Facebook about his wife wrote “Happy birthday to the first love
of my life who is the woman of my dreams who made my dreams come true when she agreed to marry me!!”
How She Rolls
Since Debra was visiting her dad in Venezuela for her birthday when I wrote this article, I reached out to her daughter Caroline to ask about her mother’s beauty routine.
“Usually my mothers routine doesn’t begin with “beauty products” for the day. She always wakes up and goes in and checks on her bed-ridden mother (who’s lived with us for 15years now) and makes sure that the nurses’ aids have arrived for their shift. At times she practices some of her laughter therapy on my grandma by putting on fun, Italian music and clapping (my grandmother is full blooded Italian) or telling her happy good mornings and stories. As for beauty products, one thing I’ve noticed her use daily is a strong moisturizer - Cetaphil Facial Moisturizer, SPF 50. She puts that on before her makeup and again sometimes when she goes to bed.
My mom eats gluten free most of the time when at home. She is a believer in essential oils and homeopathic remedies. She religiously puts on Spice Traders (an essential oil) on religiously to keep her immune system strong. (She put it on us as kids too) and she drinks electrolyte as well as smart water.
Being a very sensory person, she uses perfumes or candles to bring peaceful smells into her work space or room. I think that’s also why she enjoys essential oilsl. They smell good and are grounding. She surrounds herself with symbolic things, like her jewelry in particular. She wears turtle pins that represent a lot of different things to her. Like “slow and steady wins the race.” She also wears natural crystal stones that have good energy.
She’s constantly reading on her phone and following new psychological studies of the brain, etc. Her days are never “routine” because I think that’s just what life has dealt her, but she manages to always keep learning to better understand herself and others.
I’d say most of all her “routine” is surrounding herself with things that bring her peace and order like her oils or Pins or her family/people to take care of. She reads her scriptures daily for that needed spiritual strength. She’s really one of a kind!
Why She Rocksn Debra’s own words, she has “paid her dues living in the grim mindset that one has to be serious to be effective and has evolved from a traditional lawyer to one who believes in transformative and integrative law.” She has developed a model for resilience training, anger management and peacemaking that is out of the box yet grounded in sound empirical evidence. Laughter Lawyer USA advocates laughter, positive psychology and conflict management with a smile so that stressed professionals can become harbingers of peace by: reframing their thinking, reforming bad habits, and restructuring public images. She takes her humor seriously, conducting many of the workshops and training sessions associated with it wearing a big, red clown nose.
From Kim Garmon Hummel at Ankora Studios “WHAT A CLOWN! I had the opportunity to work with Debra during a BOCI TV Interview. (Business Over Coffee International) where she modeled her bright eyes, beautiful smile and big red nose. Debra is very intuitive, perceptive and ready to act when a need arises. She’s well equipped with the knowledge and insight to inspire and empower people to become the best version of themselves that they can be!”
Debra also spends countless hours volunteering for causes she feels passionate about. She is a facilitator for the Addiction Recovery Program for the Linden Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Becasue of her personal experience with special needs children of her own, she is familiar with the ramifications of raising and defending the rights of children with disabilities. She has worked with IEP’s, school testing/evaluations and therapeutic assesments for not only her own, but other children. She has also conducted yearly therapeutic laughter clubs before the Health Occupations Students of America at Riverside High School in Decaturville, Tenn.

it’s not for sissies A MEMOIR BY MARIE PIZANO
According to Marie Pizano, the word “no”
is not in her vocabulary. She simply
says, “I Can” and “I Will”. Her
memoir, From Barefoot to Stilettos tells
the story of her life thus far, from her
childhood days of living on food stamps,
gangs and double-dutching on the streets
of south-side Chicago to surviving a life
changing accident, moving to Memphis
and living a trophy-wife life, dealing with
the mean girls, the monster-in-law, panic
attacks, becoming a mother, to her post-
divorce years and defeating the odds of
building an entertainment powerhouse, all
while rediscovering herself, her life, and
her power. Through explorations of her
own past and present tense, Marie
reflects on how the sum of her trials and
triumphs shaped her into the empowered
woman she became during her incessant
quest to find her “yes.” ...
