ADVENTURES IN ENGINEERING AND COMPUTINGRising 9-12 graders

Interested in engineering or com-puter science? Could you be a future computer scientist? Could you be a future engineer? Come learn about different types of engineering and computer science, and what engineers and computer scientists really do. You will be exposed to Computer Science, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Chemical, and Biomedical Engineering to get a clearer picture of what it means to earn a degree in one of these fields. This jour-ney will include experiencing university labs where you will perform hands-on activities to personally experience how each field is unique and fascinating. ADVENTURES IN VEX ROBOTICS Rising 6-9 graders

Learn how robots think, sense, and function before designing and building one using the Vex™ Robotics Design System. Theory and learning sessions will alternate with building sessions. Consider the history of robots, how they are used now, and how they will be used in the future, as well as engineering con-cepts, electronics, sensors, and control subsystems. Round out your adventure in a robot demonstration by competing against other robot teams. No experi-ence in robots is necessary.

Explore the human body, musculoskeletal systems, physical movement, and interactions between body parts to get a foundation for your future in medicine. You will learn how to improve your own health, prevent disease, and teach others.

ADVENTURES IN DIGITAL MAPMAKING TECHNOLOGIESRising 6-9 gradersLearn how geospatial technologies are changing our world! Global position-ing systems, geographic information systems, satellite imagery, smart phone are all technologies that are transforming how we manage environmental resourc-es, locate businesses, plan for disasters, and even fight crime. Use a GPS unit around campus to find items around campus and determine if they are placed correctly to benefit everyone’s lives and safety. Join Carolina faculty currently using these technologies to address a number of problems that require understanding that geography – where things happen – is crucially important to solving them.

JULY 12-17ADVENTURES IN ROCKET SCIENCERising 9-12 gradersEver wonder how rockets are built and launched? Learn the history of rock-etry and launching, basics of model rocket construction and then use the engineering design process to design, build, and fly your own rocket! You will build a series of increasingly complex kit rockets in a design challenge. Using cardboard, balsa, and glue, you will construct a rocket of your own design to meet the challenge! This ad-venture will take place at the Challenger Learning Center of Richland County School District One, the only center of its kind in the state of South Carolina.

ADVENTURES IN MEDICINE: ULTRASOUNDRising 10-12 gradersJourney into the body in real time to watch the heart beat! Using a hand held ultrasound probe and an ultrasound unit the size of a laptop, you will learn to scan the body in the same labs and with the same doctors as our medical students at the USC - School of Medicine. Ultrasound allows physicians to determine what is going on inside the body in a non-inva-sive way. Using sound waves, it gives images of the inner workings of the body so that emergency room docs can make quick life saving decisions.Orthopedists can decide where the proper injection in the joint should be. Practice on our real life simulator and on real patients! You will learn some anatomy and physiology along the way.

ADVENTURES IN WEB DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT Rising 9 – 12 gradersBecome a Web Designer! Build your very own Web site from scratch. Through hands on lessons, discover color theory, creative text effects, how to hand-code HTML, CSS page designs, and how to design customized graphics. Using authoring software and programs like Dreamweaver and Photoshop you’ll make your site unique with dynamic animation, rollovers, time-based effects, image galleries, videos, and more. ADVENTURES IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING-BUILD YOUR OWN BODY SENSOR!Rising 9-12 gradersDiscover electrical engineering by exploring, designing and constructing body-worn sensors. Body-worn sensors are highly portable electronic devices that can analyze and evaluate physical activity and its effects on vital signs. You will learn how emerging technologies provide new avenues for personal health management through measurement and assessment of your daily life.Discover how electrical engineers develop sen-sors and systems for body-worn technol-ogy, and even create your own body-worn sensor to take home! Theory and learning sessions will provide you with the foundation and history of electrical engineering and career paths.
