winter

Wrap up warmIt can get very cold along the coast during winter, so we rec-ommend you pack base and mid layers, as well as a thick winter jacket, hat, gloves, woolly jumper, scarf, winter boots, and pull-on spikes (for sale on board).

spring

Cover all basesAs you are likely to encoun-ter three seasons during one sailing in spring, it’s impor-tant to pack well and layer up. We advise bringing a woollen jumper, warm socks, a thick scarf, winter boots, warm, waterproof trousers and jacket, a hat and gloves.

summer

Summer attireSummer weather along the coast can be changeable, so in addition to t-shirt, shorts and sandals, it’s wise to pack a warm jumper, light jacket (water-resistant), thin hat and gloves, and hiking shoes.

Autumn

Lots of layersWhile the sun may be shining, you can also expect cooler weather during the autumn months. Make sure to pack thin layers and some warm clothes – a woolly jumper, wind and waterproof jacket and trousers, a hat, gloves and light hiking boots.

––– The four seasons in Norway are very distinct, here are the packing tips for each season.

The Hurtigruten Guides enhances your experience Throughout your voyage, the onboard Hurtigruten Guides will invite you to join in a variety of activities on board and dur-ing landings.

Join the Guides on boardLearn more about Norway’s history, culture and wildlife as you sail. Our Guides enthusiastically share their knowledge and passion on a variety of subjects including biology, history, geology, culture and science – presented in an entertaining, social and informal way. Join our onboardlectures, both inside and on deck, as we pass points of interest, and during evening gatherings.

Our Guides are also Canon-certified and will deliver a photography programme during the voyage that teaches you how to take even better pictures as we sail through amazing landscapes.

The joy of “friluftsliv”Norwegians are famous for their love of the outdoors, which is hardly surprising given the country’s beautiful nature. This affinity for being in and with nature is called ‘friluftsliv’. It acts in contrast to hectic, everday life, allowing Norwegians slow down the pace and focus on nature. Because Hurtigruten is a Norwegian company, friluftsliv runs through all our activities.

Join the Guides on landWe want to show you what we love about Norway and hope you will experience the sense of “friluftsliv” on special excursions with our Guides. Join them for onshore hikes to see the best and most interesting spots and sites along the coast. These hikes are presold, sold on board as a package, or booked individually on board. The focus is on the hike itself – reaching a viewpoint, for example, or encountering an interesting sight.

We are completely in the thrall of nature: be it forest, shoreline or windswept moun-tains – no matter what the weather. Some-times the paths are icy, the wind is strong, and fog impairs the view, but the call of the wild, the joy of being outdoors, feeling, smelling, and being in the moment are the essential elements of your experience.

1. The fjordsThe fjords formed when the glaciers of the Ice Age retreated. Seawater rushed in to replace the ice, flooding the u-shaped valleys and creating the mem-orable geography we now see. Norway is fortunate enough to have a warm sea current running along its coastline. As a result, the fjords are virtu-ally ice free – and ready to be explored. We sail into Geirang-erfjord in summer, Hjørund-fjord in autumn and Lyngen-fjord in spring. No matter the season, you can experience the Trondheimsfjord on our way to Trondheim. Further north, the Trollfjord, only 100 meters at its narrowest point, is among the most fascinating fjords in the country.

2. The Helgeland CoastIf you sail between Rørvik and Ørnes, you will experience the Helgeland Coast, a region of many highlights:The Vega Islands, with their 6,500 islands, islets and skerries and a special bird that produces prized down feathers, have been recognised in UNE-SCO’s world heritage list since 2004 (optinal excursion). The Seven Sisters: Seven moun-taintops alongside each other, so beautiful that a local legend tells that they are female trolls turned to stone. Torghatten with its 30-me-tre-high, 25-metre-wide and 160-metre-deep hole right through the mountainside.

3. The Arctic CircleThe magic number 66° 33’ marks this line, the Arctic Cir-cle, north of which the midnight sun shines. Above the line, you can see the sun 24 hours a day throughout the summer - or the Northern Lights in the winter, weather permitting.

4. Lofoten and VesterålenLofoten is a rare wilderness outpost that offers a unique landscape of majestic moun-tains, deep fjords and long, surf-swept beaches. We offer several optional excursions in Lofoten. The neighbouring Vesterålen islands is an archipelago charac-terized by contrasts, from white beaches and idyllic farmlands to mountain peaks rising from the sea.

5. North CapeAbout 2102 km from the North Pole, you will find one of Nor-way’s most popular attractions. At 71°10′21′′, North Cape is known as the northernmost point on the European main-land. The beauty of the North Cape simply must be experi-enced.

6. FinnkirkaFinnkirka is a dramatic cathedral-shaped sea cliff. This unusual creation of nature is an ancient sacrificial site for the indigenous Sámi tribes. In the past, fishermen also stopped here to pray for good weather on their way out, then again to give thanks following a safe return home.

——These are some of the highlights along the Norwegian Coast

What to expectCloser to the Norwegian coastOur ships are uniquely designed to explore the Norwegian coastline in the most comfortable way. Whichever season you choose to sail with us: dur-ing the springtime reawak-ening of the coast, over the long, sun-drenched days of summer, when the amazing palette of autumn colours glow, or for the soul-stirring spectacle of the Northern Lights in winter, our voy-ages offer an exhilarating means of getting close to nature – and to Norway. At the smaller ports, guests love to head out on deck for a glimpse of daily life along the coast. As we dock, quiet quaysides suddenly come to life: listen to friendly banter exchanged between dock workers, observe forklift trucks scuttle back and forth, loading and off-loading supplies to the ship; and wave hello to friends and family of our crew.

These are the moments that no other voyage along the Norwegian coast can recreate. Whatever happens, embarking on a Hurtigruten cruise will be a true adventure of a lifetime.
