Prelude Musicians

Welcome and Announcements Pastor Elbert McGowan, Jr.

* Call to Worship Psalm 86:3-13 Mr. Wright Busching Director of Youth Ministries

“Be gracious to me, O Lord, for to you do I cry all the day. Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you. Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; listen to my plea for grace. In the day of my trouble I call upon you, for you answer me. There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours. All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name. For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God. Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name. I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever. For great is your steadfast love toward me; you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.”

Prayer of Invocation and Confession of Sin Mr. Wright Busching

* Song of Preparation “Blessed Be Your Name”

Blessed be Your name in the land that is plentiful, Where Your streams of abundance flow, blessed be Your name.

Blessed be Your name. When I’m found in the desert place. Though I walk through the wilderness, blessed be Your name.

Chorus: Ev’ry blessing You pour out I’ll turn back to praise. When the darkness closes in, Lord, still I will say, “Blessed be the name of the Lord, blessed be Your name.

Blessed be the name of the Lord, blessed be Your glorious name.”

Blessed be Your name, When the sun’s shining down on me, When the world’s all as it should, be blessed be Your name.

Blessed be Your name on the road marked with suffering. Though there’s pain in the offering, blessed be Your name. (Chorus)

You give and take away, You give and take away. My heart will choose to say, “Lord, blessed be Your name.”

* Song of Praise “Praises” (Be Lifted Up)

I sing Praises to Your Name The name that's so much, higher than all names

And all honour to Your name All honour to Your name The name that's so much greater than all names

Chorus: Be lifted up Be lifted up higher Be lifted up, be lifted higher

Sermon Text Psalm 130

Sermon Title “What Do We Do When Our Suffering Is Self-induced?”

* Hymn of Faith “From the Depths of Woe” (Psalm 130)

From the depths of woe I raise to Thee, a voice of lamentation. Lord, turn a gracious ear to me, And hear my supplication. If Thou iniquities dost mark,

Our secret sins and misdeeds dark, O who shall stand before Thee?

To wash away the crimson stain, Grace, grace alone availeth. Our works, alas! are all in vain; In much the best life faileth.

No man can glory in Thy sight, All must alike confess Thy might, And live alone by mercy.

Therefore my trust is in the Lord, And not in mine own merit. On Him my soul shall rest, His word upholds my fainting spirit.

His promised mercy is my fort, My comfort, and my sweet support. I wait for it with patience.

What though I wait the live-long night, And ’til the dawn appeareth. My heart still trusteth in His might, It doubteth not nor feareth.

Do thus, O ye of Israel’s seed, Ye of the Spirit born indeed, And wait ’til God appeareth.

Though great our sins and sore our woes, His grace much more aboundeth. His helping love no limit knows, Our upmost need it soundeth.

Our Shepherd good and true is He, Who will at last His Israel free, From all their sin and sorrow.

* Worship in Giving and Benediction Pastor Elbert McGowan, Jr.

*Please Stand. (Redeemer Church, PCA, CCLI #257987)

Knowing what to do in emergency situations can be the difference between life and death. If someone is on fire what should they do? If someone is choking what should witnesses do? If some-one is having a cardiac or breathing emergency what should be done?

Spiritually speaking, we may find ourselves in dire situations. This Psalm, written from the perspec-tive of one who was in trouble, depicts what should be done when we encounter “the depths” of despair. Can you recall the overarching four points?

The agony the writer experiences in this Psalm is self-induced. Consider this quote, “There is a connection between his plight (v. 1) and the problem of human sinfulness. Although the connection is not overt, the proximity between the circumstance and the condition (i.e., the depths and sinful-ness) in these verses presumes a causal relationship between the two.” What seems to be the cause of his agony?

Do you remember a time when your own sinfulness disrupted your peace, intimacy and assurance with the LORD and hurt those around you? Did your mind immediately go to something egregious? What about “the respectable sins” that we so easily tolerate? Why can they be just as damag-ing?

Proverbs 28:13 says, "Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” Our tendency is to conceal and not confess. Why does crying out to God serve us well? Why is this hard?

The Psalmist makes numerous references to waiting on the LORD. What is he waiting on? What is he hoping in (or recalling) as he waits (v.5b)? He seems to be trusting God’s promises, even when he doesn’t experience God's presence. How can we do this today?

The Psalmist experienced salvation and restoration! He goes from one crying out to God to one encouraging Israel! How do we know that God will arrive not in anger or wrath but in mercy and love? God’s record of our iniquities (Ps.130:3) has been dealt with on the cross (Col.2:13-14)! The result of Jesus’ work on the cross is our complete forgiveness and redemption (Ps. 130:4,7-8 and Col. 1:13-14).

The Psalmist, who was in the depths in v.1 has ascended again to the heights of joy, adoration, reverence and obedience. He became a mouthpiece of God’s goodness! Do you believe this is yours in Christ?

MISSION TO JACKSON DEVICE DRIVE WEEK OF AUGUST 24-AUGUST 28

Our COVID-19 plan involves addressing some of the needs of our parish. Due to the pandemic, Jackson Public Schools will be moving toward to-tal virtual learning this Fall. There is a severe device shortage in the coun-try. Redeemer’s Mission to Jackson Committee is hosting a device drive. If you have older, but working devices you are not using, would you consider donating them to Chastain? We will perform a hard factory reset before giving them to the school. Please see flyer for more details.
