No Connection Group meetings today. How’s it been so far? Attendance for

the first three meetings has been 72, 78 and 81. Numbers are certainly not eve-

rything. However, sometimes that’s the only “speedometer” we have to gauge

how things are going. Can you help us? We’d love to have as many participate

Housing for Faulkner Chorus The Faulkner University Chorus will be perform-ing here on Friday, March 9th. Following the per-formance, there will be a potluck dinner in the Annex. We are still in need members to house

Journey Toward God

For a person still trapped in sin and warped by the fall, fear is a powerful motivator in spiritual life. Jesus will appeal to our fear and our self-interest many times. So many of his parables end with the danger of hell. It’s Jesus, after all, who said, “Don’t fear the one who can kill the body, but fear the one who, after he has killed the body can destroy the soul in hell.” The Hebrew understanding of wisdom is that it all begins with an appropriate fear of God. I suspect for almost all of us, it is where our journey toward God begins. Fear is an immature motivator. The fallen human doesn’t know or understand God well, and so what we can see when we are spiritually young is that God is big and powerful, and we aren’t in a good place with him. He is dangerous to us if we don’t deal with evil appropriately. When most of us first come to know him, we see him as a threat that is willing to turn aside. This isn’t wrong. It’s just immature. It’s a start point, not a destination. John says that perfect love casts out fear. Only God’s love is perfect, so the way we grow beyond the start point is to experience the love of God. “Taste and see,” says the Psalmist, “that the LORD is good.” The goodness and love of God draw us beyond our careful, tip-toeing fearful relationship with God and into one where we begin to seek him because he is good. As we encounter God in Scripture and see how amazingly patient he is with people we realize that he is patient with us. When our hearts fill up with a sense of God’s presence during prayer or meditation we realize that God is pleasant and peaceful and generous. When God guides us through a season of suffering and shares his strength with us we realize that he is kind and able to help us. Once our hearts come to truly know God we aren’t motivated primarily by fear anymore. Spiritual maturity is marked by the joy of loving God. He’s the very best person you know. He is kind and good, and he is fair and just, and he is warm and joyful. He remembers the afflicted and cares for the hurting. He celebrates with the joyful and rejoices in the joy of his people, he sings and laughs and invites us to come be with him. This is why we pilgrim disciples continue to make this journey

into God’s heart. Those of us who have come to know who God is realize that in his presence is where we really want to be. It’s what

we were made for. And it is God himself that invites us, “Come to me, and find your life.” -Ethan Brown
