Radiators. Radiatorsusehotwatergeneratedbyaboilertowarmtheairinaroom.Generally,thehotterthetemperatureoftheradiator,thehottertheroomtemperaturewillbe.

Radiatorsarebyfarthemostcommonformofheatinginahome.Ineachoftheroomsthatrequireheating,therewillbeoneorpossiblymoreradiators.Radiatorsmustalwaysbefreeofairandfullofwaterinordertofunctionwell.

Radiator operationIfyounoticeacoolspotontheradiator,particularlytowardsthetop,itcouldmeanthatairistrappedinside.Anairreleaseventontheradiatorallowsyoutoreleasetheairusingaspecialairventkey.Releasingairshouldtakeplacewhentheradiatoriscold.

Ifyouhaveasealedheatingsystem(onewithouttanksintheloft)thenmakesurethatyouknowhowtocheckthatthewaterinthesystemisattherightpressureandhowtotopupthelevelsifit’snot.Pleasenotethatitismostimportantthatyourinstallerhasinstructedyouonhowtodothis,orvisitourYouTubechannelforguidance.

Radiator performanceMoreoftenthannot,radiatorsaresitedunderneathawindowsothatthewarmairthattheygenerateheatsthecolderaircominginthroughthewindow.Aradiatorwillnotperformaswellasitshouldifcurtainscoveritorifshelvesarefittedabove.Puttingfurnitureortablesinfrontofaradiatorwillalsoaffectyourcomfort.

Even heatRadiatorsshouldallheatupatthesameevenrate.Toensurethattheydo,yourinstallershouldhave‘balanced’thesystem.Thisisachievedbyadjustingeachradiator’slockshieldvalve,whichregulatesthewaterflow.

Turning off radiatorsInabalancedsystem,individualroomtemperaturesdependonalltheradiatorsworkingatthesametime.Ifyoudecidetoturnoffradiators,forexampleinsparebedroomsorroomsthatyourarelyuse,youmightfindthatroomsadjacenttothosehaveaslightlylowertemperature.

Make sure that areas around your radiators

are always clear. Putting furniture in front or

covering radiators with long curtains will block

the heat, reducing your comfort levels.

If your radiators are getting excessively hot and the boiler is rapidly turning on

and off, the temperature of the water going to your radiators may be set too high.

This wastes energy and reduces the boiler’s efficiency. You can usually adjust the

temperature using the central heating control dial or adjustment switches on your

boiler. See page 9 for more information.

Thermostatic radiator valvesTheradiatorsinyourhomeshouldideallybefittedwiththermostaticradiatorvalves(TRVs),whichwillenableyoutocontroltheindividualtemperatureofeachroom.Theycanbeadjustedtosuitthecomfortlevelsyouwantandprovideasimplewayofreducingrunningcosts.ThehigherthenumbershownontheTRV,thehottertheroomshouldget,uptoamaximumofaround22°C.

ItisimportanttomakesurethattheareaaroundaTRViskeptclearandisnotblockedbyfurnitureorcurtainssothatitcanaccuratelydetecttheroomtemperature.Don’tbetooconcernedifthewholeoftheradiatorisnotashotasanuncontrolledradiator,asit’slikelythattheroomisuptotemperatureandtheTRVhastemporarilyshuttheradiatoroff.PleasenoteaTRVshouldnotbefittedonaradiatorinthesameroomasaroomthermostat.

Maintaining radiator valvesTopreventTRVsandon/offradiatorvalvesfromsticking,turnthemalittlebyhandevery2-3months.It’salsoimportanttocheckthattheplastictopsonallvalvesarealwaysinpositionandarenotcrackedordamagedsoastopreventaccidents.Takecarenottoknockvalvesandpipeworkwhenvacuumingorcleaningfloorstoavoiddamagingthem.

Radiator removal for decoratingWhendecoratingaroomitcanbemoreconvenienttoremovetheradiatorfromitsbracketsallowingyoutopaperorpaintbehinditmorethoroughly.Usuallythismeansisolatingthetwovalveseithersideoftheradiatorandopeningtheunionnutconnectionwhichwillallowthewaterintheradiatortobedrainedintoacontainer.Theradiatorcanthenberemoved.Replacingtheradiatoraftertheworkhasbeencompletedrequirestighteningtheunionnutsbacktotheradiatorvalvesandthenturningthevalvesbacktowheretheywerepreviouslyset.

Iftheboilerisacombiandisrunonasealedsystem,thesystemwillneedre-pressurising.SeeourYouTubechannelforguidance.

Underfloor heatingInamodern,well-insulatedproperty,underfloorheatingcanactastheprimaryheatingsourceand,inmostcases,nootherspaceheatingmethodisrequired.

Underfloorheatingoperateswithlowerwatertemperaturesthantraditionalradiatorsystems.Thismakesittheperfectcomplementforgroundsourceandairtowaterheatpumps.

Thelowreturnwatertemperatureofunderfloorheatingalsomakesitsuitableforusewithcondensingboilers,ensuringtheyremainattheiroptimumefficiency,withsignificantenergysavings.

Boilercontrolsmakeabigdifferencetoyourcomfortandenergyusage.Youcandecidewhenyouwantyourheating,andinsomecaseshotwater,tocomeonandgooffandhowwarmyouwantyourhometobe.Theyensureacomfortabletemperaturewhilstreducingyourenergyuse,sothatyouonlypayforwhatyouneedwhenyouneedit.

Built-in boiler controls Yourboilerislikelytohavetwocontroldialsorpushbuttonsonthefront.Theseareahotwatertemperaturecontrolandacentralheatingtemperaturecontrol.

Thehotwatertemperaturecontroldialisforsettingthetemperatureofthehotwatercomingoutofyourtapsandshower.

Thecentralheatingtemperaturecontroldialisforcontrollingthetemperatureofthewaterthatgoesfromtheboilerintoyourradiators–nottheroomtemperature.Ifthesettingistoohigh,theboilerwillusemoreenergythanitshouldaswellaswastingit.

Youmayalsofindthattheradiatorswillgetveryhotandreachtheprogrammedroomtemperatureveryquickly,whichwillturntheboileroffandthenbackonagainwhenthetemperaturedipsdown.Thisconstanton-offactionusesmoreenergy.Ahighsettingwillalsoaffecttheboiler’sabilitytocondense(captureandre-usetheheatthatwouldotherwiseescape),whichmeansthatenergywillbewasted.

It’salsoimportantnottosetthedialtooloweitherastheradiatorswilltakelongertoheattheroomstothetemperatureyouwant.

Cloudy waterIncertainareasofthecountry,atcertaintimesoftheday,heateddomesticwatermightoccasionallyhaveacloudyormilkyappearance.Thisiscompletelyharmlessandiscausedbythemillionsofairbubbles(carbondioxide)thatarecreatedwhenthewaterisheated.Justlikethecloudywaterthatyoumightgetwhenyoufillaglassfromatap,thiswillsettleandclear.

Combi boilers and water metersWhenahotwatertapisturnedonandthenturnedoff,asmallamountofthewaterexpands,whichisallowedtotravelbackintothewatermainsunderwaterregulations.Watermeterspreventwaterfromflowingbackintothemainssoifonehasbeenfitted,insomecasestheremaybeabuildupofpressurebetweentheturnedoffhotwatertapandthemeter.Thiscouldcausetapsorshowerstodrip.

Ifyouhaveacombiboilerandawatermeterwasalreadyinplacewhenitwasinstalled,yourinstallermayhaveneededtofitanexpansionvesseltothemainswaterpipework.Thisabsorbsalloftheexpansionwater.Ifyouhadawatermeterfittedafteryourboilerwasinstalled,youmaybenefitfromhavinganexpansionvesseladded.Inbothcases,askyourinstallerforadvice.
