Alternative help for incontinence Incontinence is not much talked about but the fact is anyone can become incontinent at any age, for example through stress, illness or childbirth, and it affects millions of people in the UK.

The embarrassment factor can be significant, not helped by the usual ‘solution’ offered, of incontinence pads. One woman who refused to accept this is Gaynor Morgan, who saw her mother struggle with the problem.

Gaynor says: “We all know how incontinence pads end up in landfills, which is bad enough, but it makes me mad when the big firms throw millions at marketing that it’s ok for women to be incontinent as they have a pad to absorb the urine. No matter who the celebrity is pushing these pads, the result is the same; women are still sitting in their own urine and only hiding the problem, not solving it.”

Gaynor was determined to invent an alternative that would be safe for both the user and the environment. Her persistence has resulted in the award-winning IncoStress medical device (www.incostress.com), which helps improve incontinence in woman by strengthening pelvic floor muscles naturally, while also acting by pressure to control the flow of urine.

Corner Propolis – nature’s

cold sore weapon For many people, cold sores are triggered by stress or fatigue, which is why they strike inconveniently just

when you can least cope with them. Fortunately, nature has given us us

propolis to help defend ourselves against the harassment.

Propolis is made by honeybees, and scientists have found they use it to kill a range of pathogens, utilising its anti-microbial properties. Research has highlighted the way it reduces the growth of bacteria, viruses and moulds inside the hive*. Coating the site of a cold sore with propolis can reduce the spread of the virus that causes the problem, and limit the likelihood of secondary infections spreading. It can be applied five times daily to the area of the cold sore, even if the tingle stage has passed.

Nature has perfected the recipe – propolis contains so many synergistic components that it’s impossible to duplicate or improve it in the laboratory. So far, more than 140 compounds, such as amino acids, trace elements and flavonoids, and 22 minerals have been identified, depending on which plants the bees have used, where, and at what time of year. * Source: Simone, M., Evans et al. Evolution 2009; 63: 3016–3022.

The latest research on vitamin D suggests fair-skinned people may need to take vitamin D supplements. Researchers in Leeds surveyed 1200 people and of the 730 who had a ‘lower than optimal’ level of Vitamin D in their blood, most had pale and/or freckled skin.

Sunlight is the usual source of vitamin D, but we spend less time in the sun than we used to, and when we do are encouraged to cover up and use sunscreens to reduce skin cancer risk. So many sections of the population are already finding vitamin D supplementation helpful, including the elderly, young children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and those in Scotland and the North who are exposed to less sunshine. Now the Leeds’ researchers say fair-skinned individuals who burn easily may need vitamin D supplements to help combat deficiency.

Andrew Thomas, MD of BetterYou vitamin D oral spray DLUX, says: “Fair skin absorbs UVB radiation more readily than darker skin so the production of vitamin D is actually much faster. The problem is that it burns faster too, which is why fairer skin requires more protection. Most skin creams for fairer skin will contain UV blocker so vitamin D supplementation should be a serious consideration throughout the year."

Fair skinned? You may need vitamin D!

Our bodies need a pH balance of 7.4, ideally, to function optimally. But too much stress, sugar, alcohol, wheat or dairy foods, can tip it into ‘acidosis’. This acid state causes the body to use up valuable calcium to buffer the acid away, and to store the excess acid in our tissues and muscles. The result is felt as various aches and pains, including headaches and migraines, or skin problems, and is accompanied by fatigue, feeling irritable or sluggish. In the longer term, acidosis means an increased risk of osteoporosis through calcium deficiency.

You run on adrenaline and find it hard to relax. Adrenaline leads to acid formation in the body.

That headache has come back and your muscles feel tense. A sign of stress, tight muscles indicate acid build-up.

Cheese, meat and bread are favourite foods. These are major acid forming foods.

You drink or smoke or both. This is a recipe for the creation of acidic waste products.

That allergy is aggravating you again. Allergic and inflammatory states such as eczema, psoriasis and asthma are linked to acidosis.

You’ve been feeling anxious or depressed. Emotional issues create biological stress in the body, which is acid forming.

if you ticked yes to 2 or 3 of these ‘acid alerts’, then your risk of acidosis is high. the good news is you can now easily test your pH level to see if it’s too acid. Visit www.phstrip.co.uk or www.yourhealthyliving.co.uk to order a simple litmus test. it costs just £1.20. Then if you are too acid, or too alkaline, you can take immediate action by taking a pH-balancing supplement for 6-8 weeks. You can then re-test your pH to see the difference.

People often report an improvement in health issues and energy levels after taking pH-balancing supplements for 6-8 weeks. If can also be helpful to address your diet if acid-forming foods form a strong part of it, with the help of a qualified nutritionist.

Visit your nearest independent health food store and ask for pH-balancing supplements that include a pH litmus test. Or go online to order your pH-balancing minerals and acidity test kit today: Visit www.phstrip.co.uk or www.yourhealthyliving.co.uk and follow the link.

If you feel tired, irritable and long for some vitality again but can’t understand what the problem is, maybe your body’s acid-alkaline balance needs addressing.

Serranol may help to support healthy...

SERRANOL IS A UNIQUE COMBINATIONOF IMPORTANT NUTRIENTS

IT CONTAINS:

– Serrapeptase: In the last few years inflammation has been identified as a root cause of many chronic diseases. Serrapeptase helps to support a reduction in inflammation.

– Curcumin: Contains the special form of bioavailable curcumin BCM-95, which is absorbed up to 7x more than ordinary curcumin. Curcumin is a curcuminoid of the Indian spice turmeric (found in curry) and has been used for thousands of years for its anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral & anti-fungal properties. A search of MEDLINE on the internet reveals over 1,800 studies for curcumin!

– Ecklonia Cava Extract: Also known as ‘Seanol’ this is the ‘new kid on the block’ and has had over £20 million spent in studies! Supports all round health. This uses a 100% full strength extract – important to note because lots of other extracts are only 13%!

Young men – can you help?Blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan has launched an appeal to find 10,000 young men (aged 18 to 30), to join their blood stem cell donor register. Men are preferred donors, as they tend to produce more stem cells than women. A blood stem cell transplant can replace a damaged immune system in someone with blood cancer, such as leukaemia, if the donor’s cells match. Currently, men aged 18 to 30 make up only 12% of donors. It is very easy to join the register and if you are asked to donate, you could save someone’s life. www.anthonynolan.org/spit

Pulses found to cut cholesterol Canadian researchers have found eating a diet rich in cholesterol-reducing foods can be more effective than skipping saturated fats alone. Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed eating more nuts and seeds, soya products such as tofu, plus beans, peas and lentils can be beneficial. The British Heart Foundation says people should be aware this approach will take commitment, along with making better dietary choices.

Chlorella, the fresh water algae, is probably best known as a detox supplement, but it’s much more than that. Chlorella has an amazing nutritional profile, with nearly all the nutrients our bodies need for optimal health. For many nutritionists, it’s the perfect food supplement.

Not all chlorella is the same, and the Yaeyama Chlorella may be especially suited for immune system support and vitality, which is good to know at this time of year! Find out more from www.genki-health.co.uk

There's nothing like a book at bedtime...

The Sting

This was part of the thinking behind the Dormeasan Storywriting Competition which was launched six months ago with Your Healthy Living. So many people find it difficult to get a satisfying night's sleep, and yet heaps of us have a rushed and hectic schedule that barely allows time for tooth-cleaning, let alone a relaxing before-bed routine to help us to switch off. So bring back the books!

The people at A.Vogel decided that as well as providing Dormeasan herbal drops for sleep disturbances, they would

help out by providing an incentive for crafting some bedtime stories. Not that some of the entries would encourage sleep! The imagination powering some of you storywriters out there is quite something... Read some of the stories available on www.avogel.co.uk/story to see for yourself.

While the shortlist is being decided, here’s another story of the month for you to enjoy – just a taster here and in full online at www.avogel.co.uk/story or www.yourhealthyliving.co.uk

It was almost eight thirty and the evening sun had only just begun to cast a filtered buttery glow over the dry, cracked ground in the park. The midsummer celebration was still in full flow; dozens of children running and screaming in bare feet while their parents sat on plaid blankets drinking beer. I sat with my daughters, near the bandstand, the three of us nodding along to the music in a drowsy way....

“Have you seen your brother recently?” I asked, looking around with my hand over my eyes to avoid the blinding light from the low sun.

“He was playing football last time I saw him. Over there,” Lucy, middle child, pointed towards a flaking white goal post at the far end of the field.

I squinted hard and made out a pale little figure sprinting towards the goal that I thought was probably Christopher. He was moving swiftly with the ball at his feet, and then all of a sudden stopped in his tracks, letting the ball roll miles wide of the goal. I frowned, then realised with a jolt in my gut why he had stopped running. Christopher was now running even faster in the opposite direction, splaying his arms madly as he sprang into his father’s arms.

“Dad!” The two girls had spotted this too, and hurtled towards the football pitch, dodging the minefield of picnicking families.

I sat glued in position, chewing the edge of a paper cup. A shadow cast over me and I turned to see a looming figure with my three children clinging on like monkeys.

“Anna,” said a familiar voice.“Ben,” I replied curtly. The three children hovered around him, their milky blonde

hair, bleached by a good summer, now matched his perfectly. They chattered excitedly about the hat parade and the bouncy castle and the BBQ food.

... I noticed a chill in the breeze for the first time and the skin prickled on my arms. The sun was starting to set now, and I saw a few dark clouds emerging over a line of tall oak trees. The kids ran to get a round of ice creams with a handful of change Ben had given them, and we were left alone for the first time.

“Anna, I need to ask you about something,” Ben’s tone switched

to business, which meant we were about to discuss something serious.

“Go on,” I said. “I spoke to my parents today, and they want to take all three of

the kids away for a few days at the beginning of the Christmas break, to see my brother and his family in Germany,” he spoke clearly with no pauses, like he’d rehearsed in the car on the way.

I bit my lip. The reality that this was no longer my family to visit did not sit well in my stomach. It felt like I’d eaten glass, as I imagined all of them sitting around the dinner table catching up without me.

“My parents… they booked it before I had a chance to…” he sounded apologetic but did not say the words.

“It’s already been booked without even asking me? Well, they can’t go. Your parents will just have to try and get their money back.”

.... A screech and bang to our left made us both look up. A small, green scattering of sparks appeared above the bandstand. It wasn’t fully dark but the sky was the colour of bruises, and the fireworks were visible enough. I glanced over to Chloe, Lucy and Christopher, who were kneeling up on the blanket, huddled together, pointing upwards. A quick succession of screaming rockets lit up the sky in pink and blue and illuminated their grinning faces.

“What do you want?” I asked Ben. “I want my family back.”“For God sake-”... A screaming noise at ground level made us both jump. We

hadn’t noticed a line of wooden stakes with spinners and fountains that had been placed in front of the bandstand...

“Just take them to Germany,” I said, suddenly sick of the whole conversation.

“This isn’t just about Germany-”A Catherine wheel started screeching and spinning at the far end

of the row of stakes, nearest to the children. Bright peach sparks hit the ground like heavy rain. Ben reached out and grabbed my elbow. I stared at his fingers gripping my slightly sunburnt arm, and noticed he was still wearing his wedding ring...

understanding Sleeping Naturally

By Naturopath Diana Bowman from the College of

Naturopathic Medicine

Most of us experience a sleepless night occasionally. A night or two of lost sleep, though not ideal, shouldn’t have any major effect on your health. When one sleepless night turns into several in a row, you may be facing a sleep problem, and several nights of missed sleep can affect your emotional and physical well-being. If you have difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep, there are many natural ways to alleviate this problem without prescription medication:

Tryptophan Foods In the evening, try to eat bananas, dates, figs, warm milk, nut butter, turkey, whole grain crackers or yogurt, because these are foods high in the amino acid tryptophan, which can promote sleep.

Avoid caffeine from lunchtime on and have your last meal 2-3 hours before bedtime. If your body has to work hard to digest your food when it should be sleeping, you may have a difficult time staying asleep.

Consistent Lifestyle Get ready for bed and get into bed at the same time each night; consistency is the key to success. Finding a

routine that works for you and following it will help you reach your sleep goals.

Take a hot bath or shower 1-2 hours before bedtime to help your body and mind relax. Add some lavender oil to your bath or into your shower gel to relieve tension and relax tight muscles.

Dim the lights 1 hour before going to bed to tell your pineal gland it’s time to start producing the sleep hormone, melatonin. Your body only produces melatonin when it’s dark.

Create a sleep atmosphere in your bedroom. Take out all distractions like a computer, television or phone. Make your room as dark as possible to signal your body’s natural day/night rhythms.

Herbal Helpers Chamomile tea sipped a ½ hour before bedtime can relieve anxiety and promote a restful sleep. And Valerian Root (tea or pills) is considered one of nature’s tranquillizers. It calms the nerves without the side effects of comparable orthodox drugs. In order to achieve the full effects, Valerian needs to be taken consistently over a period of 3 weeks.

Vitamin B protects memory Taking a vitamin B pill daily could well protect your memory. Oxford University researchers found people of pensionable age taking high dose B vitamins once a day for two years did 70% better in a memory test, prompting them to suggest middle aged people could benefit from taking a daily vitamin B complex. For advice on the best B vitamin supplement to consider, ask your local independent health store adviser.

Here are 3 simple steps to reduce your toxic burden:

123

Are people getting more stupid?According to Sherry Rogers MD, celebrity doctor in the USA, the everyday chemicals in our environment are poisoning us and making people stupid. Quoting reports and statistics from the World Health Organisation and the US Environmental Protection Agency, she argues that everyone carries toxic chemicals which our bodies cannot detoxify naturally, and adds that disease is a symptom of toxicity.

“Are we to have a nation of low intellect, zombie-like people with no motivation?” she asks in her book, Detoxify or Die.

“EPA studies show 100% of human fat biopsies contain styrene residues (plastic wrap), dioxins (from food herbicides), xylene (from paints and glues), 1,4-dichlorobenzene (from deodorizers and textiles).” She later adds: “100% of humans harbour PCBs, one of the most potent causes of cancer known to man.”

Dr Rogers quotes studies to show that pesticides cause brain retardation; styrene causes brain fog, poor concentration and memory loss; mercury leakage from fillings can cause brain damage; and that dioxins from herbicides cause loss of motivation. Never before, she says, has humankind been exposed to an accumulation of so many different chemicals.

Make-up artist Jemma Kidd has teamed up with Udo’s Choice Ultimate Oil Blend to offer a Mother and Daughter Makeover Day at the Jemma Kidd Make-up Academy in London.

Jemma set up the academy when she realised that millions of us wear make-up but few of us have been taught how to apply it properly! The make-up competition prize is worth over £800 and includes overnight accommodation for two in London, a professional make-up workshop, goody bags and the chance to meet Jemma too. Follow a clean wholefood diet and avoid processed foods. Make sure you don’t have vitamin and mineral deficiencies as these can thwart the success of any attempt to detoxify.

Avoid exposure to toxins by drinking filtered water, eating organic, and not having unnecessary chemicals in your home, such as artificial air fresheners.

if you are generally healthy, use a sauna occasionally to sweat out the toxins (spending lots of time in a sauna can mean you lose minerals and they can exacerbate some health conditions – check with your GP).

The downright healthiness of coconut oil is becoming better known, helped by celebrities such as Miranda Kerr crediting it with keeping them slim – Miranda is said to use coconut oil daily for cooking, on salads and even adding it to her favourite cup of green tea!

As a saturated fat, coconut oil was thought to be an unhealthy one, until it was discovered to be mostly medium chain fatty acids (MCFA), and to have a positive benefit for health.

As well as being rich in several minerals and vitamin C, the MCFA content is known to help increase the metabolism, helping to burn fat, and together with its capric and caprylic acid content, have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

New research has revealed 81% of people in the UK would consider turning to complementary therapies to treat pain, stress and a lack of sleep. The complementary therapies that most intrigued and interested respondents were acupuncture (37%), aromatherapy (31%), reflexology (29%), meditation (25%) and acupressure (20%).

The results, from natural healthcare company Lifes2Good, also revealed that one in three Brits would consider using natural pain relief instead of reaching for conventional painkillers. Natural pain relief options to consider can include herbs such as willow bark, mindfulness based meditation, acupuncture and massage.

I want a natural help for cold sores!I suffer with cold sores at this time of year. Is there anything natural that would help?

Shona says:I suggest you try an excellent product called Silicea Cold Sore Lip Gel. What makes it so special is it not only soothes the burning and itching sensations you experience with a cold sore, it also binds to the secretions and systematically dries out the blister. So the spread of the virus is quickly inhibited, it looks better, and the itching and burning is relieved. Available from health stores and www.peak-nutrition.co.uk

An update from Shona Wilkinson RDip CNHC MBANT, a qualified nutritional therapist with an alternative health practice in West Sussex

Vitamin C is not enough If you’re taking vitamin C to get you through the winter, that’s good. Even better though is to make sure your body has sufficient phytonutrients, essential fatty acids and probiotics. These have all been demonstrated to play a vital role in immune wellbeing, and work alongside vitamins, minerals and trace elements to balance out any nutritional deficiencies that may be affecting your ability to ward off winter bugs. One of my favourite supplements for this time of year, which has all these bases covered, is Orthomol immun. I think of it as the Rolls Royce of immune supplements, and interestingly, it’s used by many professional football players and athletes. Find out more from www.bodywiseuk.com

Natural health news & winter wellness

Why do I catch so many colds?I seem to catch more than my fair share of colds and am not looking forward to this winter and it happening again. Any advice?

Shona says:You may have a weakened immune system and if you’ve taken antibiotics regularly to shift infections in the past, this in itself may have weakened or further weakened your immunity. Carol Vorderman reveals how after years of managing a successful but hectic career as a single parent, at 50 she has finally found the perfect balance and is having the best year of her life...

Do you think being 50 is regarded differently these days?

Carol: I think being 50 nowadays is so different to when my mum was in her

fifties. Back then, being in your fifties meant you had to behave a certain way. But I don’t think women nowadays feel that way – I certainly don’t. I think the attitude now is very much anything goes. Loads of my mates are in their thirties and forties and they don’t look at me and other friends in their fifties and think they’re old – they’re just friends.

Q What do you enjoy most about being 50?

Carol: I’m much more relaxed and just go with the flow without feeling the need to plan too much. I’m at a stage in my life where I feel I’ve ticked certain boxes. I’ve achieved probably all that I want to in my career, I have more money, and I have more freedom now that my kids are older. They are wonderful young people and we get on like a house on fire so I don’t have to worry about them as much anymore. But I’m also very aware that I can only enjoy this time in my life if I have my health and I’m grateful for that.

Q How important is it for you to be fit and healthy?

Carol: It’s extremely important to me to be fit and healthy. Without your health the rest pales into insignificance, especially as you get older. You can only enjoy well earned peace of mind and confidence if you’re healthy. Occasionally I get under the weather but it surprises me when that happens.

12 | your healthy living

Q Have you always been health conscious?

Carol: I think it was when I got to 40 that I started to take it seriously. In my thirties I wanted to be successful and get money for the family so I was working six days a week from 7am until 10pm sometimes. I had always been reasonably slim – a size 8/10 – but when I fell pregnant with Katie at 32, I was literally pregnant from my nose to my knees! My body exploded.

After giving birth to Katie I went straight back to work but it was exhausting and I couldn’t press the accelerator because I had already got my foot to the floor. I found myself just grabbing food for fuel and that’s when I ate badly. I’d put on about 3 stones and couldn’t lose it. I lost a little weight after a few years, but then I put it on again when I gave birth to Cameron at 36. By the time I went back to work at 38, I was a wreck – I literally felt old and shattered from the moment I woke up to the time I collapsed into bed. I had two young children, a business running, everything was going on and I needed a change, so I did the detox diet.

Q What was the detox diet and how did it help?

Carol: A friend of mine was on the diet and I could see that she wasn’t just losing weight but her eyes sparkled and her skin was fantastic so I thought I would give it a go. I did it for a month and lost a lot of weight but most of all I felt amazing – like I had the energy of a teenager. I went on the diet again six months later and felt years younger. My heart felt good. I couldn’t see it at the time but when I look back I think what a difference it made.

fit &fabulous

Fifty,

feeling

The diet is all about eating lots of fruit and vegetables and supporting it with the right supplementation. After a month my taste buds changed and I don’t even fancy chocolate anymore.

Q Do you still follow this regime today?

Carol: Yes. The detox diet changed the way I ate and I still follow that routine today. I eat loads of fruit and vegetables and I would say that I’ve stuck to it over the years for about two-thirds of the time. I miss it when I don’t have it. Sometimes when I’m really busy or staying away I eat irregularly, which I really don’t like, and also end up drinking a bit too much socially, and my energy levels tend to flag.

Q Do you get ill very often?

Carol: I rarely get ill, I eat well and I take Sambucol® Immuno Forte Effervescent Tablets, which I find really helps to boost my immunity and ward off colds. On the rare occasion that I have developed a cold or flu, I have found that Sambucol helps to fight it off. As soon as I start feeling poorly, I just add one to a glass of water and let the fizz do the rest!

Q Why do you choose to take Sambucol?

Carol: I like the fact it’s dual action so helps prevent and shorten a cold. I haven’t got time to mess around with several products, so having just one I can rely on is perfect for me. As a rule, I prefer taking products that are supported by strong evidence, which Sambucol has lots of, plus the Black Elderberry flavour suits my taste buds. I know that it has twice the antioxidant power of blueberries and beats even Vitamin C.

I am balancing things much better now and although I could work

seven days a week again if I chose to, I would get to 60 and think what a waste.

fit &fabulous

Q How do you feel about your body at 50?

Carol: I am much more in tune with my body than I used to be. I

haven’t weighed myself for 12 years but I have what I imagine to be a half stone range. When I’m at the bottom end of it everything fits like a glove and when I’m at the top range of it my dresses can be very tight but what the hell, I’m not buying a whole new wardrobe. I am still a size 10 with a small waist, big up top, huge down bottom and that’s the way it is. I don’t beat myself up about it. There are far more important things in life.

Q What would be your advice to other women in their fifties?

Carol: I think that it’s about putting achievable diet and fitness goals into your schedule rather than setting yourself up to fail. Eating a healthy diet that works for you is important. I know that eating certain foods are not good for me – for instance I stay off bread as much as possible because it just makes me feel sluggish and bloated. But just because you have a bar of chocolate or a great night on the town it doesn’t mean you should feel guilty at all... it’s always, always about the balance.

Having confidence in yourself and putting a smile on your face is also important – there is nothing more attractive than a smiley person. I come across so many women who have incredible figures but no confidence – they are always worrying about the bits

they ‘don’t like’ which is daft. Life is too short.

My big piece of advice would be to get rid of as much stress in your life as possible. When I had a full-on TV career working seven days a week, I would wake up and immediately be thinking about the day ahead. I rarely went to parties, I just worked damn hard and I never got the balance right until now. Now I wake up and feel so much better about the day ahead.

Q How are you finding being on loose Women?

Carol: I love being on Loose Women. The girls are hilariously funny and the best company. It’s a lark. They are brilliant at what they do. I was saying to some of the girls that it’s the first time since Richard (Whitely) died that I have really laughed.

Q you certainly seem very happy...

Carol: Life’s brilliant. I am honestly having the best year of my life. I am balancing things much better now and although I could work seven days a week again if I chose to, I would get to 60 and think what a waste. I’ve also never been single before in all my adult life. I have always been in a relationship of sorts – married, living with someone or a long time boyfriend – and although I haven’t had many relationships in my life, when one finished there would be another one there tomorrow. Now I’m single I’m so much happier. For now … until I change my mind. Ha.

Protect yourself against colds and winter bugs with these natural immunity helpers, writes Liz Parry

inter is fast approaching, and with it comes the likelihood of coughs, colds and sore throats.

Indeed, according to the NHS, a whopping 15 million people in the UK are affected by colds and flu each year. That’s

why it’s essential to give your immune system a boost to help your body fight off all those nasty germs and viruses. Here we take a look at some healing foods, spices, herbal remedies and supplements to add to your immune-boosting armoury.

GarlicIt may prove to be a little anti-social in large quantities, but garlic is a powerful immune stimulant with antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. “It has been hailed for centuries in the treatment and prevention of coughs, colds and chest infections,” says Julia Charles a naturopathic nutritionist (www.nutritionfornow.co.uk). “Garlic has been proven to be particularly effective in boosting white cell production and ‘natural killer cell’ activity. These natural killer cells are the body’s defences which directly attack common invaders such as viruses, bacteria and other micro-organisms.”

Prepare a warm salad of roasted vegetables with

quinoa and a dressing made with pressed garlic. The action of pressing releases more of the essential properties than chopping.

Echinacea This herbaceous perennial plant with its purple, daisy-like appearance was used by native American Indians to heal wounds and infections. Modern day research shows that taking echinacea can more than halve the risk of catching a common cold. Like garlic, it helps to activate the body’s natural killer cells, thus improving our resistance to infections. It also helps to reduce the severity and duration of colds and flu viruses.

Echinacea drops or tablets available from independent health stores.

Vitamin D“Vitamin D is one of the best immune boosters around,” states naturopathic nutritionist Micki Rose (www.purehealthclinic.co.uk). “Since we make vitamin D from sunlight on our bodies, it’s not surprising that levels can drop sharply as we enter the darker months. Put simply, less sunlight means less vitamin D and that results in more susceptibility to viruses like colds and flu.” The Vitamin D Council recommends a minimum of 50ng/ml (125nmol/L) and 5000iu per day for adults.

A good rule of thumb is 1,000iu of a vitamin

D supplement per 25lb body weight over the winter to keep you cold-free.

Turmeric Not only does it flavour our curries, but turmeric is also good for our health, explains natural nutritionist

Gemma Edwards (www.theorangetemple.co.uk). “Its principle active ingredient is

curcumin, which not only gives it its yellow colour, but has powerful antioxidant

and anti-inflammatory qualities, ideal for protecting our cells at times when immunity

is challenged. Ayurvedic medicine

considers turmeric a ‘warming’ spice,

which helps stimulate our ‘inner fire’ and so it is a

wonderful way of boosting circulation and keeping us warm

in winter.”

Add half a teaspoon of turmeric to soups, stews

and omelettes or sprinkle it over roasted vegetables for a hearty, warming meal.

Propolis is proving the entrepreneurs’ choiceA popular remedy for busy people is bee propolis extract, as it’s naturally antiviral and antibacterial – honeybees make it from plant and tree resins to seal and protect their hive – and supports the immune system without over stimulating it.

Entrepreneurs among the biggest fans of bee supplements, such as Unbeelievable Heath’s (www.unbeelievablehealth.co.uk) include Sahar Hashemi, Founder of Coffee Republic, and Simon Duffy, founder of Bulldog Men’s Skincare, while Lisa B, Actress and founder of Mothers 4 Children Charity says: “I take Bee Prepared immune support to help keep my immune system in fighting form. Being a mum of three boys aged 5 and under means I try to stay as fit and healthy as possible – there is no time to be ill!”

Elderberry Elderberry is a powerful weapon in the battle against colds and flu due to its ability to destroy infectious viruses. “Every part – flowers, berries, leaves and bark – has been used as a cure for one ailment or other over the centuries,” says nutritionist Dr Sam Christie. “It is known to be specifically useful in the treatment of upper respiratory nasties including catarrh.” Recent medical trials have also shown that elderberries can speed up recovery from colds and flu.

Look for a remedy which combines elderberry with other sources of vitamin C and zinc, for a potent combination.

Zinc“Zinc is essential for normal activity of our white blood cells, particularly the ‘T’ cells,” explains Cassandra Barns, a nutritionist at The Nutri Centre (www.nutricentre.com). “It helps with the production of hormones from the thymus gland which are responsible for producing the T cells. It is also thought to have direct antiviral activity, including against viruses that cause the common cold. A trial found that zinc lozenges can reduce the duration of the common cold by up to seven days.”

Oily fishIt’s a well-known fact that oily fish such as wild salmon are particularly rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids. “Essential fatty acids have a significant role to play in immune health, noticeably by increasing prostaglandin production,” says Julia Charles. “These are hormone-like substances which act as anti-inflammatories and kill germs and viruses.”

The best way to cook wild salmon to retain the omega-3 oils

is to roast it quickly at a high temperature. Top with a squeeze of lime, spring onions, grated ginger and a dash of sesame oil.

Why antioxidants help the immune systemOur immune system is designed to defend us from bacteria, viruses, toxins and parasites that invade the body. In the case of a virus, a healthy immune system works by detecting and eliminating it before it can make itself at home and reproduce. A suppressed immune system, on the other hand, is unable to protect the body as well and therefore the body gets sick easily.

Our bodies’ cells are constantly bombarded by free radicals – by-products from normal bodily functions like breathing and exercise, but also from exposure to the sun’s radiation and from over-cooked foods for example.

Free radicals are known to damage our cells and contribute to a variety of diseases and to the ageing process itself. The immune system is also subject to free radical damage. Immune cells themselves, like T-cells, NK cells and T-helper cells, can suffer from free radical damage which may suppress their activity.

Antioxidants are compounds that neutralise free radicals. Therefore eating lots of antioxidant-rich foods can help minimise free radical damage and keep your immune system strong and reduce the risk of viruses and other invaders taking hold in your body. As we get older, our bodies need additional antioxidant support from our diet. It is therefore increasingly important to maintain a healthy, antioxidant-rich diet as we get older to keep ourselves healthy and active.

Montmorency cherries are a rich source of anthocyanins and other phenolic and flavonoid compounds, known to possess powerful antioxidant and other health-promoting properties, that can help protect and maintain a healthy immune system.

CherryActive Concentrate and Capsules are made from Montmorency cherries, using special techniques to harness and optimise their health-promoting nutrients.

Many healthcare professionals recommend taking a daily glass of diluted CherryActive Concentrate, or one to two CherryActive Capsules, to help maintain a healthy immune system, as part of a good diet and active lifestyle.

n Find out more in independent health stores and by visiting www.cherryactive.co.uk

Vitamin C “Vitamin C can enhance the function of our white blood cells, increase antibody levels and boost levels of a chemical called interferon, which helps to protect against viruses in our body,” says Cassandra Barns. She adds: “Vitamin C is also vital for the production of collagen, therefore ensuring the skin forms an effective barrier against pathogens.”

Red peppers are a fantastic source of vitamin C, providing

twice the amount as the green variety. Chop them up and eat with hummus for an immune-boosting snack.

The Daily Protection ApproachOur immune systems are constantly challenged by day-to-day stress, poor diet and pollution, for example, and while sometimes your immune system is in need of a boost, many argue it’s worthwhile taking supplements that will help to balance rather than stimulate the immune system. One such supplement is D.I.P. Daily Immune Protection™, a formulation of proven ingredients to balance immune response for optimal performance all year round. It also works to ‘educate’ the immune system by promoting the proper immune response when the body is being inappropriately attacked, as in the case with allergies. Use Ekoland organic honey this winter

U nlike regular honey, Ekoland honey is not treated at high temperatures, giving it more flavour than most and, very importantly at this time of year, retaining

the honey’s nutrients and anti-bacterial properties that are so helpful for fighting off coughs and colds.

Kick that cold or cough!Honey is an age-old remedy for so many ailments, but is especially useful as an instant cough reliever – just take a teaspoon full at a time. you can also make up a cough mixture by chopping up 4-6 cloves of garlic and placing them in a jar of honey. After a few weeks, remove the garlic, for an on-hand remedy for coughs and sore throats.

For colds, mix together 2 tablespoons of Ekoland honey with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Add boiling water and stir. Don’t drink it straight down; swish it around your mouth first. you can also try adding some freshly chopped ginger.

Ekoland honey is made by honey bees that gather the nectar from wild flowers in rural areas, away from any kind of industrial pollution. The bee hives are made using natural materials and during the winter months, the bees are not fed sugar water as so often happens with bees, but left their own honey to eat, which also protects them from disease.

Winter blues can be triggered by the lack of daylight during autumn and winter. The dark mornings and low light levels of the winter months can create a range of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) symptoms, from the mild to the quite severe.

Feeling gloomy, lethargic and having a lack of energy or feeling unable to carry out your normal routine

Winter Blues and Depression

Seeing the light for S.A.D.

Carol Barksfield is managing director of S.A.D Lightbox Company

in the winter are all common symptoms of SAD. Anxiety and depression are also key factors, which can lead to feelings of not wanting to go outdoors or see anyone. Loss of libido is another symptom which affects many people. A further big pointer towards seasonal affective disorder is that people begin to crave carbohydrates, especially sweet carbohydrates during the winter. If you have any of these symptoms, even just on a mild scale, they are all pointers of SAD.

Seasonal affective disorder affects around 10% of the British population. Over two million people will experience symptoms to some degree, ranging from just slowing down in the winter and lacking energy, right through to full-blown depression.

If you crave carbohydrates in the winter, it is a very clear indicator that you would respond well to light therapy. This has been shown to be effective in research conducted by Professor Anna Wirz–Justice in Basel, Switzerland. Light therapy can help to reduce the craving of sweet and sticky carbohydrates as comfort foods.

Using a lightbox is a natural drug-free and successful way of treating seasonal affective disorder. In clinical studies, it was found that around 86% of the general population could benefit from using a lightbox.

Light therapy works by entering through the eye. Though you do not need to stare at the lightbox directly for this to happen, as it would drive you crackers! You would have the lightbox on in your peripheral vision and the eye will automatically pick up the light. It goes in through the retinal hypothalamic pathway, which is the pathway that runs parallel with the optic nerve.

The light balances the chemicals in the brain by cutting off the melatonin in the blood, which is what makes people feel sleepy and lethargic, while increasing serotonin levels, our feel-good hormones. This is also why you would never use a lightbox within four hours of bedtime as you would need this to reverse, to enable you to have a good night’s sleep.

In the UK, many sleep disorder clinics also use lightboxes as a natural aid to help reset the body clock and improve sleep and general wellbeing.

Vitamin D deficiency is a significant factor in why we may feel depressed during the winter months. Winter blues can be strongly affected by geographical area, and the further north you go, you find more people who experience feelings of depression as a direct result of a lack of sunlight.

We are provided with vitamin D when the sun’s ultraviolet rays hit our skin, but this only happens between April and September. To attain good daily vitamin D levels from the sun, we need at least 30 minutes each day in direct sunlight, with arms and legs exposed, which many of us do not achieve. Vitamin D can also be provided through supplements. Vitamin D is found in oily fish, but you would need to eat vast quantities of these every day to reach a sufficient level.

A supplement is a perfect way to substitute what we do not receive from the sun. If you live and work indoors you may not receive sufficient supplies. When outdoors, we are told to apply sun lotion and avoid the midday sun, so even in the summer months, people can still become deficient. For those that have a good supply of sunlight on their skin throughout the summer, they may have sufficient vitamin D levels, without the need for a supplement in the winter.

Research suggests we should have higher blood levels of vitamin D in our bodies for optimal health than was previously thought. We now know that vitamin D has a most valuable function in the immune system in fighting off infection, warding off cancers and protecting our genes.

The Vitamin D connection

Dr Helga Rhein is a general practitioner based in Edinburgh

From my experience in general practice, the majority of people I recommend vitamin D supplements to do feel much better in themselves. Taking vitamin D supplements does not have to be expensive and they can make a huge difference to how a person feels during the winter months.

However, we must opt for good-sized vitamin D supplements, not just the 400 international units or 10mcg, which the Department of Health advises to those at risk; I’m afraid that is too little. Up to 10 times as much is declared as safe by the Institute of Medicine in the US. I recommend to my patients taking a dosage of 2000-3000 international units each day. Alternatively, you can take the equivalent on a weekly or monthly basis. That is perfectly acceptable and is also what I do to optimise my health.

When Hollyoaks bad guy Darren Day started to gain weight, he found himself dubbed by the press ‘hunk to chunk’, but happily he found a way back from ‘big’...

After making tabloid headlines for years as a ‘hellraiser’ and ‘heartbreaker’, actor and

presenter Darren Day is now happily married with children, but at aged 40 realised he needed to

get in shape. The wake-up call was a newspaper

photo of himself captioned ‘Dreambloat’ because, says Darren, “Not only did I look bad, I had to admit that I felt bad too. I weighed in over three stone heavier than my normal weight…but I was so far gone, I didn’t really know what to do about it.

“My problem was that I settled down, and the more contented I got, the more I ate! After I gave up drinking, I suddenly developed a craving for sweet things… and my wife is a good cook, so I didn’t need much encouragement to eat.”

Actor calls

Bread with everything!Darren took advice from professionals, and set about losing weight through exercise and eating better. “It was hard at first, because I had got into some terrible eating habits. Bread with everything, takeaways late at night, pints of beer. Just too much of everything,” admits Darren.

“But I wanted to be the sort of Dad who could play with his kids, be active with them, not some couch-potato, so with some hard work and determination, I lost the weight. But as with everything I get interested in, I tend to do it to excess, so I probably then ended up at the opposite end of the scale – eating too little, working out too much, and obsessing about it!” recalls Darren. “I went from Fat Lad to Muscle Man in 3 months. I did a big photoshoot with OK! Magazine where I was pretty much ripped, but to be honest, I

didn’t eat for a day before it and insisted on doing 50 press ups before every camera click!” he laughs.

“Maybe that’s a stage you have to go through to reach a point where you understand what’s reasonable and find a way of managing your weight that isn’t obsessive!” he reflects.

Expanding waistlines!Darren did get back into shape but in his role of villain Danny Houston in Hollyoaks knew he couldn’t compete with the 20 year olds on the show; however, he realised he could carry on watching his diet and “fly the flag for the 40 year olds”.

“I honestly think there are a lot of blokes out there who hit 40, and suddenly the waistline expands, the energy depletes, and although you’d like to fit into that old wedding suit, or that old favourite pair of

trousers, you just don’t know how to go about it.

“I think it’s easier for women because it’s more acceptable for them to discuss their weight issues, to talk about being unhappy about their weight. Whereas that’s one conversation you would never hear down the pub among the lads.”

Fighting back!Darren was asked to be an ambassador for All About Weight (www.allaboutw8.co.uk) and says he took a good look at what they were offering, tried and liked the meals, and decided it was a concept he was happy to support.

“It seemed a straightforward approach – no calorie counting or any of that stuff, which I would never do – I mean, who cares how many calories are in a chip! No, this is just good, pre-prepared food and easy snacks, which is just what I need when I’m on tour or busy at home and trying to avoid takeaways!” says Darren. “You can also call up your consultant for a chat, which I think will be useful if I’m struggling or want some advice.”

“I think its time a bloke stood up to say that you can fight back against weight gain. There are so many good things about getting older. Kicking the bad habits of youth and settling down with a wife and family has been a joy. But settling down doesn’t have to mean a beer belly and no energy to do anything but lift pints and watch telly.

“Just because you’ve put it on, doesn’t mean you can’t lose it. I’ve shown that it’s possible, and I really hope more blokes who are not happy with their weight, give it a go, because I can honestly say I feel so much better for having done it – there really is a way back from big.”

omeopathy is suitable for everyone. It is a form of medicine that uses an infinitely tiny dosage of the material substance. You get down to

a point of a dosage where no trace of the material substance is left, but there is still an energy, that is actually very curative. A substance such as arsenicum, for example, that is very poisonous in its material dose, actually cures when it is reduced down to a homeopathic potency. This tiny dose is not only curative but is also very safe to take as you cannot overdose on homeopathic medicines. The more diluted the substance, the more it can get to work. If you dilute the substance just a little, it would be good for treating physical ailments and, if you were to dilute even more, it could start treating on a deeper mental and emotional basis. Homeopathy works by treating the whole person, not just the symptoms.

Immunity remediesFor immunity strengthening, homeopathic remedies can be used as a preventative to ward off winter colds and seasonal ailments. Some remedies are specifically made up to tackle seasonal viruses. The virus is changed into a homeopathic potency and you can actually take that as a preventative when there is a virus doing the rounds during the colder months. our bodies respond differently to the same outside influences, so our susceptibility to colds and flus in the winter can vary significantly.

Independent health store advice on homeopathy

From a naturopathic perspective, taking an echinacaea supplement and eating alkalised foods plus garlic, lemon juice and cider vinegar, can really help to strengthen your body. A good intake of vitamins and minerals, perhaps taking a multivitamin supplement during the colder months, will also ensure your body is in a healthy position to ward off colds and flus.

Essential adviceWith homeopathy, it is very difficult to make general recommendations for products as each person’s symptoms can differ vastly, even with something as simple as a headache. What would work brilliantly for one may not be right for the next person.

Health stores provide a great range of homeopathic products which you can opt to choose yourself, though unless it is well-matched to your symptoms, it may not work at all. This is why homeopathy sometimes gets a bad name with sceptics mistakenly saying it does not work. It does work when you have the right remedy. I would always recommend, ahead of making homeopathic product purchases, speaking with an in-store adviser or in-store homeopath. When symptoms are a little more chronic, making an appointment with a dedicated homeopathic practitioner is the next step. Interview by Julie Penfold

Cracked and chapped lips or cold sores can wreak havoc during the hectic festive social calendar, just when we want to look our best. Julie Penfold discovers which key ingredients can keep lips through the cold winter months...

he skin on our lips is very thin and has few oil glands to keep them lubricated. Moisture quickly evaporates, causing them to dry

out very quickly. Using natural lip balms and lipsticks can help to protect and repair lips by forming a protective barrier to lock in moisture.

“There are many great natural alternatives, when it comes to lip balms, which are packed full of nourishing ingredients,” says Rebecca Goodyear, from leading natural beauty company Kinetic, which distributes passion fruit nectar lip balm and Antipodes saviour skin balm for use on cracked skin and lips. “When buying natural you can be certain there are no potentially harmful petrochemicals or parabens that are found in mainstream products. Look for lip balms containing rich butters such as shea and cocoa, or oils such as olive, jojoba and coconut. These all contain antioxidants, along with vitamins, to feed, nourish and repair the skin.”

We tend to swallow much of what we apply to our lips, so buying products with safe ingredients and being aware of any triggers which can cause an allergic reaction is very important.

“Opting for a natural and certified organic lipstick ensures you will not ingest anything that is likely to cause harm,” says Michelle Sutton from Butterflies Healthcare,

kissabledistributors of NATorigin lipsticks, the only lipsticks to be approved by Allergy UK. “The main ingredients that provide moisture and protection are organic shea butter, jojoba seed oil and organic beeswax. If your lips are sensitive, avoid products that contain lanolin, petrochemicals, synthetic colours and fragrances.”

For lips that are prone to cold sores during the winter, natural lip balms rich in vitamins A, B, C and E can help to fight the infection from the outset. Silica gel can be applied to relive the itching and burning, and help dry out any secretions. Another option is Vitamin E oil, applied topically to

aid faster skin healing.“Cold sores are caused by a virus and

vitamin-enriched lip products can help your body to fight the infection,” says Rebecca. “Additionally, taking a vitamin supplement or eating vitamin-enriched foods can help to oust the infection and prevent new cold sores from forming. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and has antiviral and antibacterial properties, which work to fight infections and boost your immune system. As skin absorbs what we apply to it, applying vitamin-enriched lip products can help to fight cold sores before they even appear!”

Oils are the elixirs of life that keep both our insides smoothly functioning, and our outsides gleaming with health and vitality. Oh so easy to incorporate into our diet, their flavour will enhance most dishes from a straightforward salad, to a more complex culinary affair. Pick and chose from Miss Savvy’s top 5:

1 Olive oilWhat house in the land is without a bottle of this green fruity chap?

Its benefits are legendary: abundant in monounsaturated fats for a healthy heart, plentiful in antioxidants to help fight disease and combat ageing, including being rich in Vitamin E to help keep skin, nails and hair strong – the oil par excellence!

Glug away à la Mediterranean, over salads and veggies or make a simple vinaigrette dressing by mixing 2 parts oil to 1 part vinegar, adding one clove of crushed garlic with mustard and mixed herbs to taste.

For cooking, olive oil is not stable at high temperatures, so it’s best used in low to medium range temperature cooking or in the final stages of high temperature cooking.

Coco Cauli Soup

1 onion roughly chopped

1 fat clove of garlic chopped

1½ dessertspoons coconut oil

2 teaspoons Garam Masala powder

1 cauliflower, broken into small florets

1 250g tin of butter beans, rinsed and drained (this will give a pottage thickness so if you fancy something more lightweight use ½ tin)

1 pint of vegetable stock

Fresh nutmeg

1 Heat 1 dessertspoon of the coconut oil and sweat the onion for 15 minutes.Sprinkle in the Garam Masala powder and stir for 1 minute.

2 Add the remaining ½ dessertspoon of coco oil and throw in the cauliflower florets and butter beans.

3 Pour the stock on top and give it a good stir; bring to the boil, turn down the heat, pop a tight fitting lid on and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the cauliflower is nice and soft.

4 Let the soup cool then whiz up in a food processor.

5 Divide between bowls and grate a shower of nutmeg over the top. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Try this Coco Cauli Soup – a tropical twist on the usual broth!

2 Coconut oilThis is one of the most heat-stable oils, making it an excellent choice

for high temperature cooking. Coconut oil is made up of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), which the body tends to use straight away, helping it to burn fat rather than piling it on. Rich in lauric acid, this oil boosts the immune system and helps destroy harmful bacteria and viruses – a wonder oil indeed!

Coconut oil is a very versatile friend: an ideal replacement for butter in baking, a very yummy spread on toast or crackers and perfect for starting off winter stews and soups. And if you want the benefits of coconut oil but without the taste, you can purchase deodorised coconut butter.

The following three oils are unsuitable for heating and should always be kept in the fridge.

3 Flaxseed oilFlaxseed oil, the queen of omega 3, promotes a healthy heart, strong

immune system, happy colon, peachy skin and it’s a golden godsend to vegetarians and those who don’t eat fish.

The Western diet tends to be omega 6 heavy, so redress the balance by drizzling this flaxen fare over pasta, rice dishes and stir into dips and smoothies. Flax oil is also delectable poured over salads with lightly toasted walnuts, which are themselves a fantastic source of omega 3 – a double bill of treats!

At Your Healthy Living, we love...

4 Pumpkin seed oilIf all that pumpkin means to you is a pie at Halloween, then let me

introduce you to this verdant and full-bodied oil, packed with vitamins A and E, Zinc and those precious omega essentials. Perfect for smooth skin, increased energy and good prostate health.

Try adding to mashed avocado with a squeeze of lemon or pouring onto hot cereals, soups and stews. Bread dipping is highly recommended! Also divine dribbled over vanilla ice cream.

For a zesty salad dressing combine 2 dessertspoons with 1 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar, a dash of orange juice and a little finely grated orange rind.

5 Hemp seed oilThis delicate tasting pale green oil contains the perfect balance of

Omega 3, 6 and 9 essential fatty acids. It nourishes the skin, brain and joints and due to its high Magnesium content it can be helpful for the symptoms of PMS. Stir through rice, spill over potatoes or add to salad dressings. Try my Blue Hemp Smoothie for a perfect va va voom breakfast that will keep you fuller for longer:

Loraine Murry, Weleda UK’s natural beauty consultant, answers: Wrap up well with a soft scarf, hat and gloves to cover what you can, and then protect skin with a replenishing cream on any exposed areas. We recommend you try a 100% natural botanical based protection cream, something very gentle and well tolerated by sensitive skin.

Go for beauty balms and creams made with nourishing plant oils rather than with mineral oil and instead look for protective ingredients such

as hypoallergenic lanolin, a natural substance which is very similar to the oily sebum in our skin. Other protective natural ingredients I would recommend include unbleached beeswax and sweet almond oil, which is known for its mildness.

Calendula is famous for its soothing, natural anti-inflammatory properties and is great for areas prone to chapping and dry patches of skin on the face or hands, even the lips.

n More on weleda beauty from www.weleda.co.uk

Ian Marber, The Food Doctor, answers: I am sure that you will have discussed diet with your health professionals and if you are going to make further changes to your diet then you should make them aware of your plans. I have worked with countless clients in the same position and I believe that the most effective way to reduce the requirement for insulin is to manage glucose levels in the blood through diet.

As you may know, the speed at which foods are broken down in the digestive system varies, and the rule of thumb is that simple carbohydrates are broken down rapidly, followed by complex carbohydrates, then protein and lastly fat. Any food that is broken down rapidly will result in an increase in glucose

concentrations in the blood, and so the trick is to combine complex carbohydrates with a little protein every time you eat. The results are a consistent slower release of glucose into the blood.

Some clients have expressed a concern about the calorie content of this way of eating and although you may be increasing calorie intake slightly, bear in mind that the calories last longer if derived from protein and complex carbohydrates, resulting in reduced appetite.

In short, avoid all simple carbohydrates; so no sugar, sweet fruits, fruit juices or white-flour based foods, and always combine the food groups when you do eat.

An example of breakfast might be a wholegrain cereal with flaked almonds and a few berries. Lunch could be a chicken salad with a couple of oat cakes, while dinner might be fish and vegetables with a little brown rice or quinoa.

The trick to remember is that eating protein automatically reduces the total glycemic load of any meal, so include protein with complex (never simple) carbohydrates every time you eat for an easy, sure-fire way to manage glucose levels.

Be daring by signing up for the 90ft abseil down the side of the famous Earls Court Exhibition Centre in London. Have fun, be fearless and enjoy an alternative view of the capital, followed by local bonfires and fireworks. Registration is £10 and your target is to raise £150 in sponsorship. For more info contact CLIC Sargent on 0208 752 2893 or email [email protected]
