The recommendation last month not to give oral herbal remedies containing echinacea to children under the age of 12 has been met with criticism.

The announcement, from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), advised that Echinacea, the popular remedy which helps stimulate the immune system and fight infections and viruses, should not be taken by children under 12 years of age because of an association with a ‘low risk of allergic reactions’. However, the MHRA indicated that ‘this is not a serious safety issue’ and that ‘parents should not worry if they have given echinacea to children under 12 in the past’.

The National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH) has questioned the announcement, pointing out that the data the announcement was based upon is a monograph from 2008 and a research paper from 2002, both limited in scope and inconclusive – with no data on any specific risk when Echinacea is used by children over the age of one.

A spokesperson for NIMH went on to say that the organisation does not agree with the MHRA interpretation of the situation on the occasional minor adverse reactions possibly caused by Echinacea.

Did you know?A herb that has been used for centuries as a sweetener in South America is fast becoming a popular natural alternative to sugar. Stevia Rebaudiana is a herb in the Chrysanthemum family which originally grew wild as a small shrub in parts of Paraguay and Brazil.

Several natural substances can be derived from the Stevia plant. The sweet-tasting components of the plant are called Steviol glycosides. These can be isolated and purified from the leaves and are more than 200 times sweeter than sugar.

One of the best-tasting and sweetest extracts is called Rebaudioside-A (Reb A). Reb A is now being used to sweeten a whole host of drinks, including teas, soft drinks and juices and foods such as yogurt, cereals and salad dressings.

What’s more, Reb A is non-synthetic and nothing about it is chemically or structurally altered when it is extracted from the Stevia plant. A very sweet idea indeed!

Detoxification and liver health

By Nutritional Therapist Georgie O’Connor for the College of Naturopathic Medicine

Think ‘detox’ and you automatically think of the liver – and you’d be right to do so. It’s an incredibly hard-working organ, performing more than 500 tasks daily in the body!

Most of us are aware from school days of the liver’s work in processing digested food, controlling levels of fats, amino acids and glucose in the blood and making bile. However, did you know it also manufactures, breaks down and regulates numerous hormones including sex hormones, it combats infection by clearing the blood of infectious microbes and neutralises drugs?

When the liver functions smoothly, physical and emotional activity throughout the body also runs smoothly. However, if the liver is out of balance, emotional problems, nausea, dizziness, headache, cramping, menstrual problems, jaundice, weak or blurry vision and digestive disorders may result.

Two phases of detoxIn nutritional terms we tend to simplify the many functions of the liver into Phase I and Phase II detoxification – or ‘chop and mop’ as it is affectionately known – breaking things down and then parcelling them up and dispatching them. It’s very important that these two phases stay in balance with each other, otherwise you might have a lot of potentially toxic intermediate metabolites in circulation because they’re waiting to be parcelled up and dispatched.

Phase IMost of the nutrients needed for Phase I are water soluble and hence needed on a daily basis because the body doesn’t store them. Phase I needs lots of B vitamins, antioxidants and vitamins A, C and E, typically found in unprocessed foods such as wholegrains, bananas and molasses, fresh and frozen vegetables and fruit, particularly berries; as well as avocados and almonds.

Phase IIPhase II by contrast needs good quality protein such as that found in quinoa, amaranth, tofu and almonds, along with phytochemicals specifically found in garlic and cruciferous vegetables. A very simple daily practice that really helps to stimulate the liver and keep it functioning optimally is to take a glass of warm water and lemon first thing in the morning. Try it – you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes to your feeling of wellbeing.

So, if after a period of over-indulgence you decide to ‘detox’, please remember your poor liver needs the nutrients outlined above to clean things up! A daily token of love for your liver by tweaking your diet and alcohol intake will endear you to it far more than a week of starvation and then back to the bad old ways.

Organic food study causes concern Claims from US researchers that that organic food doesn’t offer any added health benefits have been criticised as being flawed. Researchers from Stanford University Medical Centre in California have claimed that organic produce is no better for our health than food grown using pesticides and chemicals. They added that they found no clear evidence of any significant added health benefits in organic produce and stated that there was no guarantee that organic food would be free from pesticides.

However, a spokesman for the Soil Association said commented: “The report and its methodology is flawed and actually serves to highlight the difficulty – if not impossibility – of accurately measuring the human health benefits of one type of food over another.

"The scientific methodology used for the review, while suitable for comparing trials of medicines, is not right for comparing different crops. A UK review paper, using the correct statistical analysis, has found that most of the differences in nutrient levels between organic and non-organic fruit and vegetables seen in this US study are actually highly significant.” The researchers carried out a major review of existing studies examining the health benefits of organic food. The results were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine journal.

St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)Herbal Helper Bio-Health’s June Crisp introduces...

Over 14 double blind clinical trials conducted between the mid-eighties and mid-nineties, in Germany and Austria, concluded that St John’s Wort is not only effective as an anti-depressant, but comparable to established orthodox alternatives. Authors of clinical trial conclusions were forced to note fewer side effects from the herbal treatment than when compared to synthetic anti-depressants.

As a result of overwhelming evidence St John’s Wort is now the drug of choice in Germany for mild and moderate depression. The plant has a long and illustrious history of medicinal use dating back to Dioscorides (first century AD), continuing in the middle ages when it was used to drive away demonic thought and mental illusions, and in both the great herbals of John Gerard and Culpeper.

Traditionally other uses for this fascinating plant have included melancholia, emotional imbalance and excitability, all sometimes linked to feelings of low mood.

It has also been the first choice of many herbalists for nerve ending pain caused by shingles, neuralgia

and sciatica or used restoratively for persistent nervous problems. One study found Hypericum to have anti-inflammatory activity similar to hydrocortisone. It really is a remarkable herb and one that is continuing to grow in reputation.

Since April 2011, herbs considered to be medicinal by function need to go through a vigorous registration process to ensure the product will be suitable for safe self-medication.

Having achieved approval to gain a licence, products are marked with a Traditional Medicinal Registration logo and must have a product information leaflet for consumer safety. It is recommended that consumers wishing to take St John’s Wort look for the approval mark and licence number on the pack.

Warning: Depression is a serious condition that must be diagnosed by a medical doctor before self-medication is considered.

The true beauty of collagen

New hope for arthritis sufferers?

Much is known of collagen – the most common protein found in our bodies – and how it assists with joint health mobility. From the age of 25 our collagen levels reduce at about 1.5% every year. Joints stiffen. By 45, collagen levels reduce by up to 30%. But what is perhaps not so widely known is the vital role collagen can play in complementing diet and daily beauty regimes. Also at 25, the skin’s surface becomes dull and lifeless and the elasticity reduces to cause unwanted sags and wrinkles. Collagen provides amino acids to support the building blocks of skin, hair and nails and helps to slow down the ageing process.

n For more information on Collagen Plus, a 3-in-1 joint supplement, visit www.arthrovite.com

Collagen type II could bring hope to the 10 million people who suffer from arthritis in the UK. According to a recent study, undenatured collagen type-II was shown to be more than twice as effective in relieving joint pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis when compared to glucosamine and chondroitin. Undenatured collagen type II is taken from the sternum of chickens and is said to help stimulate the immune system and relieve the symptoms of inflammation, pain and discomfort. The 90-day clinical trial compared undenatured collagen type-II with glucosamine and chondroitin on 52 people with osteoarthritis of the knee suffering from joint pain and stiffness. In the collagen group pain decreased by 40% whereas in the glucosamine/chondroitin group pain decreased by 15.4%.

A bit of businessAs Annie hung her husband’s jacket on to a coat hanger, she caught sight of the grey envelope sticking out of the inside pocket. Her stomach turned and she closed her eyes until she could get her breath back. In twelve years of marriage she had never got over the initial shock when she caught a rare glimpse of one. He usually kept them well hidden. The first had appeared within weeks of their wedding day. She watched as he slit the envelope and unfolded the single sheet of paper. There was no change of expression on his face as he checked the calendar before tucking the letter in his inside jacket pocket. “Anything interesting?” asked Annie.

“No, just a bit of business,” he replied. She knew, of course. Indeed, it would have been difficult not to listen to the gossip and the warnings once people knew they were engaged. One day, she thought, he would tell her the truth and she would say, “I know. I’ve always known.” Until then she would keep her thoughts to herself and welcome him home with a smile every time... ...She knew the form by now; indeed, she could have written the script. Albert always waited until they were in bed together then he would switch out the light. “I have a bit of business tomorrow, old girl,” he would say. “I shan’t be seeing you for a couple of days.”

Be poised for lifeA campaign to promote better posture among children is being launched this month by the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT). International Alexander Awareness Week, which runs from 8 to 14 October, will this year focus on children, encouraging and supporting parents and teachers to help kids be ‘Poised for Life’. According to a recent survey carried out by STAT, parents are concerned that gaming and computer use affects their child’s wellbeing with lack of concentration (32.4%), back ache (30.9%), neck ache (26.2%) and head ache (31%) all highlighted. The Alexander Technique is a therapy which helps to restore natural, easy posture and functioning and the proper balance and co-ordination of the head and spine. Do you often find yourself sneezing, itching or suffering headaches whilst at work? If so you could be allergic to your workplace. A survey carried out by the charity Allergy UK has found that 95% of those questioned experienced symptoms such as nasal problems, eye conditions, dry throats, breathing difficulties, lethargy, headaches and skin irritations whilst at their office. Worryingly for employers, 42% of allergy sufferers took time off work because of their symptoms. If this is a problem for you, try the following advice from Allergy UK:

n Ventilation is extremely important, whether it is windows, trickle vents or an air conditioning system. If, however, you have hay fever sufferers in the office, keep windows closed for the first part of the morning and late afternoon.

n If ventilation is limited, use an effective air purifier to help remove and reduce allergens such as pollen, house dust mite debris and mould spores.

n Review flooring and furnishings. Carpets on concrete floors can trap moisture allowing dust mites and mould spores to thrive.

n Ensure plants are regularly watered and the top soil removed regularly to avoid moulds.

n Ensure office cleaners have effective cleaning methods and equipment such as a HEPA vacuum cleaner that will ensure that pollens and allergens are trapped adequately.

n Keep your desk clear and uncluttered and damp dust it twice a week.

Are you allergic to your workplace?

Diet dilemma for men

Men’s Health

It looks like it’s not just kids who need encouragement to eat their greens as researchers have discovered that men are less likely than women to eat vegetables. The study, which was carried out by a team at Kent State University in Ohio, focused on the links between people’s beliefs and their behaviour.

The group examined three beliefs: people’s attitudes toward fruit and vegetables, their feeling of control over their diet and their awareness that other people want them to improve their diet. They used data from nearly 3,400 people gathered as part of the 2007 National Cancer Institute’s Food Attitudes and Behavior survey. The findings showed that women have more positive attitudes toward eating fruits and vegetables compared to men. Men, on the other hand, have less control over their fruit and vegetable intake than women. The research group concluded that messages that are effective in encouraging women to eat healthier foods don’t work as well on men.

Study researcher John A. Updegraff said: “It’s important to help men understand the importance of a healthy diet, as well as to develop confidence in their ability to make those healthy choices, whether it be at work or at home.”

Collasense - a new, patented supplement with undenatured collagen type II

For joint mobility and to maintain healthy cartilage

COLLAGENCollagen is the main structural protein in the connective tissue of the body. Collagen in cartilage consists mainly of collagen type-II.

Collasense helps to maintain flexible joints and healthy cartilage by promo-ting the immune system, as a result of which the cartilage in the joints is supported in a natural manner.

WHY UNDENATURED TYPE-IIThe collagen in joint cartilage is made up of 85-90% collagen type-II.

I want Your Health

Jo Blaylock, Pravera General Manager, answers:Believe it or not, yes. 100% mineral make-up is both gentle on problem skin, and

helps to improve it too. Choose a natural and organic brand which usually contain active ingredients to benefit the skin, as well as light-reflecting mica, which is perfect for making your skin look smoother and clearer.

Applying non-natural make-up containing synthetic ingredients can trigger flare-ups for people with either sensitive or spot-prone skin. Mineral make-up that only contains natural ingredients is kinder and will be more compatible with your skin, and because of this the active ingredients can get to work straight away, and also the texture of a good mineral make-up allows the skin to breathe, so won’t clog your pores or add any further complications.

You asked: “I suffer from outbreaks of acne every now and then, so I’m not very confident without a good make-up base, but I don’t want to make the problem worse. I heard that mineral make-up can actually be good for clearing spots as well as

covering them up. Is this true?”

You can also write in with your health query: Your Healthy Living Q&A, Unit 2, Three Hills Farm, Ashdon Road, Bartlow, Cambridgeshire, CB21 4EN.See www.yourhealthyliving.co.uk for terms & conditions. Lucy Stephens, medical herbalist, answers:The immune system is our defence against a wide range of pathogens including bacteria and fungi. The first

line of immune protection is formed by the barriers between the outside and the inside of the body; this includes the gut, lungs, skin, mucous membranes and body orifices.

These barriers are constructed in a way that limits the amount of harmful micro-organisms that get in. Just like the bacteria that live in our gut, our skin also has a large amount of bacteria living on it to protect us. However, if any of these barriers are compromised, (by medication, stress, poor nutrition, age, etc) recurrent infections such as what you’re experiencing can occur.

Increasing evidence shows a connection between

the gut and the skin; with studies indicating oral probiotics have a positive effect on skin problems. Supplementing with a good quality probiotic would be a helpful preventative treatment. Other supplements to consider for optimal gut and skin function are L-glutamine, an amino acid needed for gastrointestinal health and proper immune function, and vitamin D3 which is key to regulating gut function and supporting gut flora.

To help with symptoms, try using a footbath with a few drops of essential oils of tea tree, lavender, thyme and myrrh, all of which have shown anti-fungal activity in studies. Also add a couple of drops of each to a base cream and apply to the affected areas to help to clear the infection.

You asked: “I suffer from recurrent fungal skin infections on one of my feet. I treat it with conventional anti-fungal cream, but it soon returns in another spot. Are there any natural

alternatives for treatment and prevention?”

Our bodies need a pH balance of 7.4, ideally, to function optimally. But too much stress, sugar, alcohol, wheat or dairy foods, can tip it into ‘acidosis’. This acid state causes the body to use up valuable calcium to buffer the acid away, and to store the excess acid in our tissues and muscles. The result is felt as various aches and pains, including headaches and migraines, or skin problems, and is accompanied by fatigue, feeling irritable or sluggish. In the longer term, acidosis means an increased risk of osteoporosis through calcium deficiency.

You run on adrenaline and find it hard to relax. Adrenaline leads to acid formation in the body.

That headache has come back and your muscles feel tense. A sign of stress, tight muscles indicate acid build-up.

Cheese, meat and bread are favourite foods. These are major acid forming foods.

You drink or smoke or both. This is a recipe for the creation of acidic waste products.

That allergy is aggravating you again. Allergic and inflammatory states such as eczema, psoriasis and asthma are linked to acidosis.

You’ve been feeling anxious or depressed. Emotional issues create biological stress in the body, which is acid forming.

You have recently lost weight. When you lose weight you release previously stored toxins into the body, thus increasing your acidity.

If you ticked yes to 2 or 3 of these ‘acid alerts’, then your risk of acidosis is high. The good news is you can now easily test your pH level to see if it’s too acid. Visit www.phstrip.co.uk to order a simple litmus test. It costs just £1.20. Then if you are too acid, or too alkaline, you can take immediate action by taking a pH-balancing supplement for 6-8 weeks. You can then re-test your pH to see the difference.

People often report an improvement in health issues and energy levels after taking pH-balancing supplements for 6-8 weeks. If can also be helpful to address your diet if acid-forming foods form a strong part of it, with the help of a qualified nutritionist.

Visit your nearest independent health food store and ask for pH-balancing supplements that include a pH litmus test. Or go online to order your pH-balancing minerals and acidity test kit today: Visit www.phstrip.co.uk and follow the link.

If you feel tired, irritable and long for some vitality again but can’t understand what the problem is, maybe your body’s acid-alkaline balance needs addressing.

Natural beauty tips for skin of all ages!

“Acne and pigmentation are the two main skincare problems women face in their 20s,” says rebecca Goodyear of natural beauty company Kinetic

Enterprises (www.kinetic4health.co.uk). “Hormones can still be a little unbalanced and this tends to manifest itself in breakouts and blemishes. Pigmentation and discolouration can be put down mostly to sun damage, but may also be caused by acne scarring or contraceptive pills.”

She continues: “For acne or skin prone to blemishes and breakouts, look for products to target these problems. natural ingredients that may be beneficial include tea tree oil, honey, lemon and oatmeal. Avoid products to ‘dry out’ the skin as this will only cause the affected areas to produce more oil in the long term. Don’t be scared to use products that contain the right types of oil, as oil balances oil in the skin. Besides tea tree, you may wish to consider bergamot, clove and lavender.

Fruit enzymes are effective for reducing pigmentation. Papaya, pineapple, lemon and lime all have the active ingredients to help this problem.

As with everything, prevention is better than cure so it’s important in your 20s to get into a good skincare routine, using products that are not too harsh for your skin. Exfoliate once a week if you have dry skin, twice a week if you have oily/combination skin and apply a mask or treatment once a week that addresses your skin issue.”

“You can’t get away with as much in your

30s as you could in your

20s!” says Jo Blaylock, General Manager with natural beauty company Pravera (www.pravera.co.uk). “During your 30s you will probably start to see the first signs of ageing. You might be aware of a few fine lines appearing around your eyes, and your skin may need a little more hydrating than it used to.

Invest in a good cleanser, toner and moisturiser and use all three morning and night. A natural and organic choice will always be more skin compatible than those containing chemicals and synthetics. As well as partying less, and making sure you get enough sleep, you need to make sure you eat a healthy, balanced diet. Keep toxins at bay, whilst hydrating from the inside, by drinking plenty of water and exercise regularly.”

Jo recommends that women in their 30s look for skincare ingredients containing antioxidants, vitamins E and A and omega-3 and 6. She says: “They are all great for helping to keep your skin hydrated and repairing damage caused by environmental pollutants. Rosehip oil is very popular right now, and can be blended with argan oil for more intense rejuvenation if you need it.”

“One of the main skincare

problems affecting women in their

40s is that the skin tends to be become drier due to the loss of oestrogen,” explains Louise Thomas-Minns, skin expert and founder of the ‘U and your skin’ facial (www.uandyourskin.co.uk). “Also, pigmentation can occur and lines and wrinkles take hold. In order to tackle these problems it’s important to have a good, thorough cleansing regime and follow this up with an effective moisturiser that also protects you from daily doses of UV and environmental damage”.

She adds: “I’m a huge advocate and fan of hyaluronic acid, which attracts and binds moisture and plumps the skin.

Other good ingredients to look out for in your beauty products include antioxidants that not only fight youth-grabbing free radicals but also lighten and brighten, like coffee berry.

“Part of my signature facial philosophy is to look within. Your diet should be abundant in brightly-coloured fruits and vegetables. You should also take on board good fluids such as green tea (in particular matcha) and take up yoga, which not only helps to calm and focus the mind but is amazingly toning, firming and nourishing for the skin too.”

“By the time women are in their 50s they will have been steadily

losing collagen and structural proteins for two

decades,” says Candice Gardner, Education Curriculum Manager at The International Dermal Institute® (www.dermalinstitute.com/uk). “Skin will lack firmness, and will fold and settle into lines and wrinkles easily. Post-menopause the lack of oestrogen will dramatically affect the skin’s remaining collagen and over the following five years skin strength, elasticity and firmness will decline rapidly.

Women will also notice that their skin becomes a lot drier as the production of natural protective skin lipids declines. This can result in flaky, itchy and uncomfortable skin that may become increasingly sensitised. Alongside

this, skin colour and pigmentation can become irregular and blotchy as a result of years of defiant or inadvertent sun exposure. Along with the dryness skin can look dull and devitalised.

The ingredients at the top of the list for over-50s include retinol (pure vitamin A) and peptides (protein fragments that mimic your skin’s natural functions). Retinol will help to normalise skin function and boost cell renewal for smoother, brighter more even skin colour. Peptides stimulate the production of collagen and other structural proteins, protect existing proteins from damage and help regulate the production of unnecessary skin pigment dependent on the specific peptide chosen. Stabilised vitamin C helps to brighten skin, promotes collagen production, defends against free radicals and helps with skin immunity.”

40s

30s

50s

Louise’s top tip “You should look to ensure that you are using

an eye product and a serum that will work on the deeper skin layers. It’s important to

apply your skincare products correctly, using upward and outward movements and taking time to massage your serums/moisturisers into the skin as this will help to promote a younger, brighter, healthier complexion.”

Candice’s top tip “Serums are the product of choice for

over-50s as the high concentration of active ingredients means that skin improvements

and results are achieved faster. Start wearing a moisturiser that offers broad spectrum sun protection every day. It is

never too late to start looking after your skin – once you start the benefits will be felt

very quickly.”

Jo’s top tip “Don’t forget your neck and décolletage! These areas need to be looked after as well. Also, remember

to always protect your skin from sun damage at any age – as well as the

ageing effect, we all know the health implications

over-exposure to the sun’s harmful rays can cause.”

Natural and organic living expert and mum-of-four Janey Lee Grace offers her top tips for natural parenting

Mummy knows breast!Breast milk must be one of the most amazing foodstuffs known to man. Not only is it top of the nutrition charts but it’s free, a living food, convenient, and as ‘green’ as you can get. It doesn’t require additives, preservatives, bottles or packaging, fuel resources, storing and it produces no environmentally unfriendly waste.

There is much research showing that breastfeeding can help protect babies against an array of health problems including diabetes, obesity, eczema, asthma, allergies, dental problems and SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). Studies suggest that IQs are higher amongst children who are breastfed. The more you look into it, the more you find breastfeeding wins hands down over formula.

If you’re having difficulties, remember that most problems and difficulties with breastfeeding arise because of poor positioning or because the baby is not latched on correctly. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from your midwife, health visitor or from one of the excellent free advisory services. ABM (The Association of Breastfeeding Mothers) have trained counsellors who will offer telephone support or will even come to you to help you establish feeding. Visit www.abm.me.uk. Don’t give up – it’s worth it!

First foodsBaby-led weaning is my best tip here. It’s a way of letting the baby choose when they’re ready to try foods (usually around six months) and giving them mostly what the family eat, without seasoning of course.

Start with organic vegetables and fruit, mostly finger foods, things they can hold easily, well cooked but not mushy. Broccoli with stems, potato wedges, roast carrot and parsnip in chunks are all good choices. As your baby gets to about month nine or 10 they can tolerate a wider range of foods. Mine all wanted to be holding their own food at this stage. I would highly recommend reading Finger food for babies and toddlers by Jennie Maizels (£10.99, Vermillion).

Once they’re older and demanding sweet treats my best advice is to be sneaky! Devise ways of sneaking in all manner of good oils and veggies into seemingly naughty treats. One thing to try is making your own ice lollies. Into the moulds pour a blend of freshly juiced pineapple, strawberries or blueberries but then sneak into the juiced mixture a nice big chunk of broccoli stalk and some EFA liquid or omega-3 oil. They’ll never know!

Janey Lee Grace is the author of Imperfectly Natural Baby and Toddler now updated and revised as an e-book. She is also the author of Joyful Pregnancy (£14.95) which is available as an e-book, CD and app. Visit www.imperfectlynatural.com

Play time! Finally, for the natural parent, a word about toys and paraphernalia. My top tip is buy very little! Maybe pick up a few toys and books from charity shops, but babies and toddlers love to play with a set of spare keys, some plastic cups and saucers and some brightly coloured paper or cardboard – it doesn’t get much cheaper! If you really want toys make use of a toy library where you’ll find an ever-changing supply of exciting toys.

Nappies – to wash or not to wash?Should you try washable nappies? It’s not such a scary idea. What you might find scary though is what’s in most disposables – the substances that can leach not only into the environment, but into your baby’s skin and what the long-term effects of that could be.

A study by the Women’s Environmental Network included a chemical analysis of five types of newborn disposables. The results showed that babies, with their underdeveloped immune systems, could be exposed on a daily basis to 3.6 times the World Health Organisation’s estimated tolerable amount of harsh chemicals.

From an environmental standpoint, we throw away eight million nappies every day in Britain alone, making up over 4% of land filled domestic waste. Every one of them could take 200 to 500 years to fully decompose.

Cloth nappies are cheaper. It costs approximately £1,000 for disposables from birth to potty compared to around £400 for cloth nappies. You can even use them for subsequent babies. In fact you’ll probably even hand them down to your grandchildren! Furthermore, cloth nappies are soft and snuggly, and look adorable. It’s not like the old days when a terry square, a safety pin and some plastic pants were all that was on offer. Today there’s a whole industry grown up around individual styles, shapes and designs. It’s hard to get excited about disposables. Real Nappy projects offer what they call ‘Nappucinos’ where you meet, drink coffee and look at cloth nappies! For the lowdown go to www.goreal.org.uk

If you really can’t face washables try some of the more ‘eco-friendly’ disposables on the market, made by companies who seem more aware of the potential health implications for your baby, as well as the environmental issues posed by use of regular disposables.

yourhealth

ToP TiPDon’t put anything on your baby’s precious skin that you can’t eat! Use organic virgin coconut oil to moisturise and avoid any harsh chemical soaps or cleansers.

yourexperts period problems

Women have around 500 menstrual cycles in their lifetime. The delicate hormonal balance required each month can be upset by stress, obesity, smoking, poor diet and even over-exercise. Painful and/or irregular periods, and named conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome and endometriosis can be significantly aided with a natural and well-balanced approach to the diet, avoiding potential drug side effects.

Blood sugar levels are key to balancing hormones, reducing pain, mood swings and cravings. Start by kicking out sugary foods, caffeine and alcohol, drinking herbal teas and water instead. Eating protein, such as chicken, turkey, fish, eggs and nuts with every meal/snack also helps to balance blood sugar. Cheese is high in salt, which can contribute to bloating.

Excess oestrogen in the body can cause menstrual irregularities, indicating a need to support liver detoxification and increase levels of beneficial gut bacteria. Foods rich in soluble fibre, such as oats, ensure excess oestrogen is naturally excreted and also nourishes beneficial gut bacteria. Taking a multi-strain probiotic supplement also helps balance gut bacteria levels.

Dr Elisabeth Philipps PhD BSc(Hons) BSC Nut Med mBANT, founder of Hartwell Nutrition, is a Nutritional Therapist specialising in weight management, endocrine disorders and gut health

Natural nutrition for period problems

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are invaluable for reducing pain, balancing hormones and regulating menstrual cycles. Eat at least three portions of oily fish a week and include daily ground linseeds sprinkled over breakfast oats or add to homemade smoothies. Taking EFA supplements like krill oil and evening primrose oil is also advised.

Immediate relief from period pains can be achieved using hop alpha acids instead of drugs like ibuprofen, reducing the risk of side effects. Magnesium is classed as ‘nature’s tranquiliser’ and is also very effective at naturally reducing pain. Green leafy vegetables are rich in magnesium along with other essential nutrients. Look for natural magnesium citrate (not oxides or carbonates) in supplements.

There’s also a ray of sunshine for women who suffer from painful periods. Daily supplementation with vitamin D (capsules or mouth sprays) may reduce period pain and cramps. Quality multivitamin and mineral supplements containing B vitamins, especially vitamin B1 and B6, and antioxidant nutrients like vitamins A, C and E alongside a holistic approach addressing stress is also recommended to support menstrual cycle irregularities and pain.

yourexperts feminine hygiene

The most common health problem we hear about from use of conventional sanitary pads is ‘intimate irritation’. This is a sensitivity to synthetic materials resulting in discomfort, often mistaken for thrush. It is actually a form of dermatitis and in some cases, women can develop allergic reactions. In a study we found that 75% of UK gynaecologists believe that conventional sanitary protection could be the cause of intimate irritation. Research conducted at New York University Medical School indicated that women could reduce their risk of developing menstrual related Toxic Shock Syndrome by using 100% cotton tampons instead of those containing rayon and rayon/cotton blends.

Conventional sanitary pads are mostly made from up to 90% petroleum-derived plastic materials such as polyethylene (the stuff of plastic shopping bags), polypropylene, a synthetic cloth-like material and dyes. Often they also contain a super absorbent gel which allows women to use a single pad for hours longer than they should. Natural, disposable sanitary pads are shaped like, absorb and function just like conventional brands of pads. However, instead of using synthetic and plastic materials, they are made with totally chlorine-free, natural and certified organic plant-derived materials that are chemical and additive-free and biodegradable.

Conventional tampons are usually made from chlorine-bleached, aggressively absorbent rayon, perhaps blended with a small percentage of conventionally-grown cotton. They are loosely cased in polypropylene to try to stop the rayon fibres shedding during use, and there is the possibility that they could contain fragrances, lubricants, and dyes. Organic 100% cotton tampons are as absorbent as main brand tampons but the synthetics and chemicals involved in the making of conventional tampons are absent. Women, therefore, benefit from excellent performance but the delicate membranes in the vagina are not exposed to chemical by-products, synthetics and residual fibres.

Chlorine bleaching creates a by-product called dioxin which has extremely harmful effects on the environment and has been linked to ill-health. Dioxin is a known carcinogen and will leave detectable residuals in any product that has been bleached with any type of chlorine bleach. Tampons with coloured strings and blue areas on pads could have been dyed with azo dyes which use heavy metals that can cause reactions, especially since they contain, amongst other residuals, nickel and aluminium.

Susie Hewson is the founder, owner and developer of Natracare, producers of natural feminine hygiene and baby care products

An intimate issue

By choosing organic and natural feminine hygiene products, women are reducing their exposure to synthetic materials and chemicals. At the same time they are benefiting from a more comfortable and breathable alternative that also leaves a light footprint on our planet.

Natalie Lamb, Dip NT, a Nutritional Therapist with Protexin Probiotics, presents some facts and figures about gut health

Did you know that…?n We have 10 times more microorganisms in our body than we do human body cells.

n Each human being carries trillions of different bacteria, with each strain having unique properties and health benefits.

n Up to 70% of your immune cells are located in the gut.

n The gut microflora – a mixture of good, bad and harmless microbes – plays an essential role in supporting these by influencing its state of alertness, optimising the speed and effectiveness of the body’s defence response to an infection such as the common cold.

n The gut flora stimulates development of the immune system in infants.

n Probiotics (live beneficial bacteria) have been shown to stimulate the effectiveness of the immune cells lining the gut wall.

gutHow good

is your

instinct?

yourhealth

n Many studies have indicated a disturbance in the balance of natural gut flora in individuals with digestive disturbances such as constipation, diarrhoea predominant IBS, allergies and diverticulitis.

n Probiotic supplementation could therefore help rebalance these levels.

n Antibiotics do not only destroy bad bacteria but can also destroy beneficial bacteria levels leaving you susceptible to further pathogenic infection or fungus overgrowth.

n Studies have indicated that probiotics may prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhoea (AAD) via restoration of the gut microflora.

n I would recommend probiotics be taken at the same time as antibiotic therapy (although at least two hours apart) and continued for two to four weeks after.

n Stress can suppress the immune system and disturb the mixture of bacteria in our gut by reducing the number of beneficial strains of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, which in turn allows an overgrowth of the bad guys.

n Stressors on the body can come in a number of forms such as hectic lifestyles, worrying, lack of sleep, intensive exercise, poor nutrition (in particular intake of stimulating simple sugars, refined carbohydrates, caffeine and alcohol).

n The bacteria E. coli is responsible for 80% of urinary tract infections such as cystitis and mainly originates from the gut.

n A number of E. coli bacteria strains are naturally present in the intestine, living harmoniously in small numbers. It may be that they only cause infection when the protective gut flora becomes imbalanced enabling E. coli to overgrow.

n The consumption of high fibre plant foods is known to assist in healthy bowel movements, by providing bulk to stools (insoluble fibre) and as a food source for good bacteria in the colon (soluble fibre).

n Eating a wide variety of colourful raw or lightly cooked vegetables and legumes can help you meet recommended guidelines of 25g a day.

n Some fibre foods such as wheat bran can be irritating to particularly sensitive bowels whereas psyllium husk powder has the advantage of being extremely water retentive and much gentler on the bowels – ideal to regulate both hard or loose stools.

n Current recommendations are to drink two litres of water (or herbal teas) a day.

n This could help flush out unwanted micro-organisms and to keep stool matter soft and easy to pass.

Lost for centuries, amaranth has recently been rediscovered by scientists who found that the ‘wonder grain’ contains a number of key elements, all beneficial to wellbeing:

Protein and amino acidsAmaranth contains high levels of the amino acids lysine, cysteine and methionine, making it a good plant-based source of protein.

MicronutrientsAmaranth is a low sodium food, high in calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, vitamin E, vitamin B6, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, folate, potassium, zinc, copper, selenium and phosphorus. A cup of amaranth provides 29% of the recommended daily amount of iron and 12% of the calcium requirement. It provides 105% of the necessary amount of manganese.

Gluten-freeOne major advantage amaranth has for some people is that it is free of gluten. Using amaranth in place of other grains to make

Great-tastinG GrainsAmaranth now forms the basis for a range of great-tasting Allos products that include cereals, muesli and crispbread.

Organic amaranth seedsRich in valuable vegetable protein, these seeds can be used in many different ways: in baking as flour, as a rice alternative or sprouted, for salads or sandwiches.

Organic amaranth PopcornThis popped amaranth can be used for muesli mixtures, but it’s also great for adding to desserts or for baking.

Organic amaranth Honey CerealThis popped amaranth cereal roasted with honey and agave syrup is the perfect breakfast and will keep you going all morning long. Delicious served with milk and yoghurt or added to muesli and served with fruit.

Organic amaranth FlakesA great breakfast choice with fresh milk (or a dairy-free alternative), or simply as a snack at any time of the day.

The lowdown on…

AromatherapyWhat’s it all about? The word aromatherapy means ‘treatment using scents’ and refers to the holistic practice of essential oils to improve health and wellbeing and restore balance to the body. Plant oils have been used therapeutically for thousands of years with records dating back to ancient Egypt, China and India. Essential oils, the pure essence of a plant, have been found to provide both psychological and physical benefits when used correctly and safely.

Tell me more! Essential oils are aromatic essences extracted from flowers, leaves, roots, peel, resin or bark. They are complex substances containing many chemical components. The oils can be blended in a carrier oil and used in massage, they can be added to bath water or can be added to an oil burner or diffuser. The theory is that when you inhale essential oils this helps to stimulate the olfactory system, which is the part of the brain linked to smell. A message is then sent to the brain’s limbic system which is associated with moods, emotions, memory and learning. This triggers the release of chemicals which can have different effects on the body, such as relaxation or stimulation.

What does it help with? Aromatherapy can help a number of conditions, ranging from stress, depression, anxiety and insomnia to headaches and digestive problems. You can buy ready made essential oils from your local health store, or you could choose to visit an aromatherapist for a consultation and treatment. It is important to handle aromatherapy oils carefully and always dilute them according to the product instructions.

Where do I find out more? For more information and to find an aromatherapist in your area, contact the Aromatherapy Council. Visit www.aromatherapycouncil.co.uk

New hope for chronic pain sufferers Recent research has shown that acupuncture can be effective in helping patients suffering with chronic back and neck pain, osteoarthritis, shoulder pain, and chronic headache. The study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine analysed 29 clinical trials involving 17,922 patients. The results showed that acupuncture’s pain relief benefit was statistically superior to both usual care and placebo acupuncture (in which fake needles were used). Nick Pahl, CEO of the British Acupuncture Council said: “Based on the growing body of research in this area, traditional acupuncture is becoming a much more viable option for those suffering from long term discomfort. Further studies have also shown that compared to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), acupuncture is also more cost-effective when used to help lower back pain and osteoarthritis.” To find a registered practitioner in your area, visit www.acupuncture.org.uk

W e tend to find that there are three main reasons why people are looking for alternatives to cow’s

milk. It could be because they are intolerant to it and it causes them digestive discomfort and upset; or they are allergic to it, which causes a more severe reaction; or it could be for ethical reasons, for example if someone is following a vegan diet. Some people simply enjoy the taste and like to add variety to their diet.

For those who are not following a vegan diet I often recommend goat’s and sheep’s milk as people tend to find they can tolerate it more than cow’s milk. This is because the fat molecules are smaller and less complex making it easier for our bodies to digest. The protein molecules are also a different structure to cow’s milk protein, again making it more tolerable for some people who have problems with cow’s milk. Another difference is that sheep’s milk in particular is richer in many vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, calcium and magnesium.

Advantages and disadvantages It used to be that soya was the only alternative to cow’s milk for vegans, but now there is a wide range of milks to choose from. People can choose from rice, oat, coconut, almond, hemp and even quinoa.

Each has their advantages and disadvantages. Soya, for example, tends to curdle in drinks when the drink is acidic and when there is a big temperature difference. This can be a problem with coffee as it is quite acidic. The way to get round this problem is to warm the milk first.

Soya milk is probably the easiest one to convert to if you want a milk alternative that

tastes similar to cow’s milk. Almond milk is naturally creamy and sweet so it goes particularly well in a hot drink such as drinking chocolate. Coconut has a light, fresh taste and is a good all-rounder that can be used in most things. Rice milk tends to be a bit more watery in consistency so may not look so appealing in coffee or tea, but it is naturally sweet. Quinoa and hemp milk are more of an acquired taste but they work well on muesli and cereal. Hemp has a nutty taste and it’s a very nutritious seed, rich in protein and omega fats.

Calcium concerns For those who are concerned about their calcium intake I would recommend trying a milk variety with added calcium. Most of the cow’s milk alternatives offer this option. Others are naturally sweetened with apple juice or natural syrups but not cane sugar, if you are looking for some added sweetness.

Another thing that people might like to try is blending different types of milk together. If, for example you liked soya milk but wanted to cut down the amount of soya in your diet, you could blend it with rice or oat milk.

There is also now a wide range of cheeses, yogurts and desserts made from things such as soya and cashew nuts which can be enjoyed by those looking to avoid cow’s milk. They are delicious and offer even more choice to consumers.

Liz Parry talks to model, marathon runner and exercise enthusiast Nell McAndrew about her passion for running, her healthy lifestyle and the challenges of motherhood

You’re now a very familiar face in the London Marathon, having competed five times. When did you first take up running as a sport?

Nell: I always used to go to the gym as I liked keeping fit but I really got the running bug when I agreed to do my first London marathon. Once I agreed to do it I realised what a big commitment it was. I joined my local running club and I was really nervous at first but the club members were lovely and so encouraging. They all wanted to share their marathon stories with me. At first I found it really hard because it’s a different way of training, but now I love it. I don’t particularly like running on a treadmill any more as I love running outside.

Q You achieved a personal best in the marathon this year. How did

that feel?

Nell: Yes it was 2 hours 54 minutes. I still can’t quite believe it! Every year I do it I get faster, which is a good sign. I trained really hard, running 80 to 90 miles a week on average and combining short runs with longer ones. I always tried to push my body and keep my training as varied as possible.

Q What advice would you give to anyone who wants to take up

running but doesn’t know where to begin?

Nell: I think if they can join a running club then that’s really helpful as it gives you the motivation to keep going and getting better. It helps you to be consistent too. You might find that you have a two-week surge where you do really well but then fizzle out the next

12 | your healthy living

week and then pick up again. But you’ll never improve that way. To be a better runner you have to do more running. It’s a great way to improve your fitness and lose weight but if you want to get faster then it’s important to do more mileage.

Q You have always run the marathon in aid of Cancer Research UK. Why

is that?

Nell: It’s a charity that’s close to my heart as various family members have had cancer. My dad had T-cell non hodgkins lymphoma but thankfully he’s in remission now. He had to have chemotherapy and a tumour removed, but he’s one of the survivors and lucky to be alive. The first time I ran the marathon he’d just finished his chemotherapy so it was a particularly emotional time. It’s good to raise money for such a good cause.

Q Do you do any other forms of exercise or sport?

Nell: Once a week I try to do weights to keep up my overall strength so I’ll do pull-ups and dips, press-ups, box jumps and single leg lunges as they complement my running. I recently had a couple of swimming lessons too and I’m determined to master front crawl this year. I’ve only ever been able to do breast stroke and that’s been badly! I’m also working on my newest fitness DVD which is called Peak Energy Recharged and will be released at the end of December. It’s 10 years since we released the first one, Peak Energy, and it’s going to be an

October 201244 | www.yourhealthyliving.co.uk

updated version of that. It’s a high energy feelgood class with plenty of exercises for strengthening the whole body and in particular the core muscles.

Q You must need a lot of energy to do all that exercise! Can you give us

an idea of your daily diet?

Nell: I try to eat as healthily as I can although I do have the odd treat day! Breakfast tends to be porridge with fruit, lunch might be a cheese salad sandwich or tuna salad sandwich. I snack on nuts, either brazils, walnuts or peanuts, and fruit or celery and carrot sticks. For dinner I might have a vegetable stir fry or an omelette. I don’t really eat meat as I find it hard to digest so eggs are my main source of protein. I eat a lot of mackerel, pasta and potatoes and I have protein shakes and bars after training. I tend to eat healthy, fresh, simple food. If I fancy an occasional treat I’ll have some Nutritious Delicious truffles. I love them because they’re 70% dark chocolate and they contain omegas, magnesium, vitamins and antioxidants.

womanMarathon

Q Do you find it challenging juggling motherhood with your work

projects?

Nell: Yes, it’s very hard work! My husband Paul and I have a six-year-old son, Devon, and he’s got lots of energy. He’s always wanting to climb things, or wrestle, or destroy things! It’s quite hard keeping up with him but he always makes life interesting and I love him so much. My favourite time is cuddling up at night with him and reading stories together. Being a mum is the most challenging and exhausting experience ever but also the most rewarding.

Q What health tips can you offer to Your Healthy Living readers?

Nell: I think it’s important to realise that there’s no quick fix to getting fit and healthy. You have to look at everything from your diet to your exercise routine if you want to lose

weight or get fitter. Try to add as much exercise as possible into

your routine like walking instead of taking the car. And make

sure you eat well because a poor diet can leave you feeling sluggish and sometimes even depressed. Getting lots of

sleep is important too as it will really improve your mood.

Remember that your body is special and it’s got to last you

a long time, so it’s important to take care of it.
