Results from an international study have found that fast food may be contributing to a rise in asthma and eczema in children.

The findings are based on answers from questionnaires taken by 319,000 teenagers aged 13 and 14 from 51 countries, and 181,000 children aged six and seven from 31 different countries. The youngsters were asked how often they ate different kinds of foods and whether they had experienced any symptoms of asthma and eczema in the preceding 12 months.

The results showed that those teenagers eating three or more helpings of junk food a week had a 39% increased risk of severe asthma, while children had a 27% increased risk. The youngsters who ate mostly fast food also had a higher risk of severe eczema and severe rhinitis, including symptoms of a runny or blocked nose and itchy and watery eyes.

Interestingly, it seems that eating fruit could help these symptoms. The study also found that eating three or more portions a week of fruit was linked to a reduction in symptom severity of between 11% among teens and 14% in children.

Researchers from the Institute of Epidemiology and Medical Biometry at Ulm University in Germany conducted the study, with the results being published in the medical journal Thorax.

Did you know?February is Raynaud’s Awareness Month (www.raynauds.org.uk), aimed at highlighting awareness of this health condition. It is estimated that one in six people in the UK suffer with Raynaud’s, also referred to as Cold Hands Complaint. Raynaud’s prevents blood from reaching the extremities, fingers, toes and sometimes the ears and nose too, and can cause numbness and/or tingling and pain. The lack of blood is caused by spasmodic contractions of the arteries, which can be triggered by temperature changes, exposure to the cold or even just by touching cold objects. There is no known cure for Raynaud’s, so can complementary medicine help?

Vicki Liu (pictured) says she has been helped by a combination of Tibetan and European herbs and spices, including potentilla, cardamom and calendula. “I was diagnosed with primary Raynaud’s when I was 12,” she says. “My fingers and toes would regularly go dusky blue to white in cold conditions and I suffered from chilblains during winter months. Wearing layered clothing and thermal socks and gloves helped deal with the

cold, but the chilblains persisted until I started taking this herbal combination, which has so far prevented them from re-developing.”

A new study says eating a portion of berries three times a week can cut the risk of heart attack in women by 32%. The Harvard School of Public Health researchers put the results down to the high antioxidant flavonoid content of blueberries and similar fruits, helping prevent blocked arteries. Berries may well have a protective effect for men too – but the study was conducted with 93,000 women.

A winning combination Post-menopausal women experiencing urinary tract infections (UTIs) could benefit from a combination of cranberries and probiotics. In more than 80% of cases UTIs are caused by the overgrowth of the bacteria E. coli originating from the digestive system or vagina. The lack of oestrogen, which characterizes the post-menopause, plays an important role in the development of this infective disease. Oestrogen stimulates the proliferation of lactobacillus in the vagina which maintain an acidic environment unfavourable to pathogenic growth such as E. coli.

There are links between the loss of the normal genital flora and an increased incidence of UTIs. Taking a daily oral dose of at least 100 million (1 x 108 CFU) probiotic bacteria has been found to restore and maintain a normal urogenital flora.

Added to this, cranberries contain specific compounds called proanthocyanidins (PAC) (specifically A-type) which prevent E. coli adhering to urinary cells, thereby lessening the chance of infection*. A minimal dose standardised to 36 mg PAC A is believed necessary to have this effect.

According to the results of a Cambridge University study, the carotenoid lycopene, which is found in tomatoes, may help to reduce the risk of heart attacks by boosting blood flow and artery health.

Lycopene is the chemical that gives tomatoes their bright red colour and is also known to break down fatty deposits in the arteries.

During the two-month trial, the lycopene-rich supplement Ateronon was given to 36 heart disease patients and 36 healthy volunteers with an average age

of 67. The preliminary results of the trial showed that the supplement boosted blood flow and improved the lining of vessels in the patients with pre-existing heart conditions. It also increased the flexibility of their arteries by 50%. The results were presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association.

Further studies are planned and the researchers hope that the lycopene-based supplement could offer an alternative to patients with heart disease who cannot take cholesterol-lowering statins.

Our new columnist, A Vogel’s education manager, takes a look at the importance of good sleepAccording to an Irish proverb, a good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor’s book. You might not want to wait until you need a cure, but instead promote good sleep as a matter of some urgency, because so many areas of your body will be the better for it.

To start at the top, with the most minor issue (that nevertheless can assume great importance at key moments), your skin will thrive on good sleep. People who don’t sleep well tend to have worse skin tone and older-looking faces than their slumbering chums. Furthermore, people who don’t sleep well are more likely to catch colds and flu bugs – your immune system needs its shuteye. Your weight will show more of a tendency to increase the less you sleep, and you will be more prone to diabetes and high cholesterol.

High blood pressure that is resistant to medication is more common amongst poor sleepers – both those who don’t spend much time in bed, and those who don’t sleep much when they are actually in bed.

Pain is perceived more strongly by those who are short on snooze time. This may seem bizarre, but experimental human and animal studies have shown that sleep deprivation causes increased sensitivity to pain.

Bearing all these undesirable consequences in mind, you may want to turn your attention to a herbal sleep aid such as valerian and hops.

An initiative is being put in place by Sport England to encourage more women to take up sport regularly. The project will examine how an intensive campaign in a specific town or city can change the sporting habits of local women and girls. The aim is to tackle the gender gap in sport.

The Sport England Active People survey showed that, on average, 6.87 million women are playing sport at least once a week compared to 6.3 million in the previous year. However, 8.64 million men are playing sport regularly compared to 8.46 million in the previous year.

The pilot scheme is being supported by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Maria Miller MP, and will be

funded by the National Lottery. Mrs Miller said: “2012 has seen the number of women playing sport increase significantly. A key part of the 2012 legacy will be for that figure to continue to go up. It is essential that we engage with women of all ages for that to happen.”

Many people, especially the elderly, suffer from rheumatoid joint conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. However, scientific research has demonstrated that a particular form of collagen may help to reduce this joint pain and swelling.

Collagen is the most important structural protein in the connective and supporting tissue in the body of humans and animals. There are more than 20 different types of collagen, but types I to IV are by far the most significant and the most common in the human body. Type II collagen is most frequent in joints, particularly in the knee, elbow, hip, wrist and finger. These joints are affected most by rheumatoid conditions.

A group of 60 people with severe rheumatoid arthritis were given collagen type II or a placebo over the course of three months. The number of swollen and painful joints decreased in the collagen group, but not in the placebo group. Furthermore, four patients in the collagen group had a complete remission of rheumatoid arthritis.

Time to cut down the fat!

Men’s Health

Saturated fats have been linked to falling sperm counts, according to the findings of a Danish study. Researchers from Rigshospitalet, in Copenhagen, carried out a study on a group of 701 young Danish men, all aged around 20. The men provided a sperm sample and gave details of what they had eaten diets over the preceding three months.

The results showed that those who ate the most saturated fats had a 38% lower concentration of sperm and 41% lower sperm counts in their semen than those who ate the least fat.

Lead researcher Tina Jensen said that the next step is to find the mechanism by which saturated fat could influence sperm count, and then to determine whether sperm counts improve when men cut down on saturated fat in their diets.

The results were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Organic versus non-organic?By Nutritional Therapist Georgie O’Connor for the College of Naturopathic MedicineMost people have an opinion about organic food, ranging from those at one end of the spectrum who embrace the philosophy wholeheartedly to those at the other end who view organics as an expensive and elaborate scam. The science has been inconsistent and, understandably these days, consumers are wary of spending more for a seemingly identical product. The trick with organics however is not that you’re paying more to get more, you’re paying more to get less – fewer pesticides, fewer herbicides, fewer hormones, fewer antibiotics and no irradiation.

Going organicIt’s a lifestyle that is worth particularly serious consideration if you’re pregnant or have young children. In a world where most of our chronic illnesses are rooted in stress of one kind or another, adopting an organic lifestyle is a major way of reducing the stress of detoxification from our bodies. This way we can at least put the nutrients we are eating to their proper use in our bodies rather than just mopping up the chemical burden.

Organic farming is also less damaging to the environment; organic farms help to sustain more diverse ecosystems, they use

less energy and produce less waste. In fact buying organic is a consumer’s most direct way of influencing food producers to use planet-friendly practices and the more widespread it becomes the more affordable the produce.

The dirty dozenThere is a pecking order of preferred organic foods and these are known as the ‘Dirty dozen’: apples, celery, strawberries, peaches, spinach, nectarines, grapes, bell peppers, potatoes, blueberries, lettuce and kale should all be organic where possible.Beware the ‘halo’ effect of the organic label – there’s not much benefit to the environment if your organic apple has flown all the way from South America! We need to remain conscious of food miles and remember the benefits of eating seasonally.

The expense of achieving ‘organic’ status may be financially beyond small local farmers, who may be organic in all but name. Try to find out more about them by shopping locally from farm shops and farmer’s markets. If you know and trust the people involved, a shorter and seasonal food chain is just as important as an ‘organic’ label.

Herbal Helper Bio-Health’s June Crisp introduces...

Of all the healing herbs now available in health food stores for self-help the one that is often completely overlooked is chamomile. Mild and easy, chamomile is gentle enough for the very young, the elderly and all ages and types between. It is a gentle remedy for tummy upsets in children where nervousness exists and a very soothing, natural carminative for tension suffered by the bereaved.

In folk medicine chamomile was known as the ‘plants’ physician’ because it was said that even ailing plants would revive if it was growing nearby!

From digestive trouble to nervousness and sleeplessness, this unassuming little herb helps with a range of disorders. Medical herbalists regard it as a true panacea or cure-all as it can be as used for so many different health-related issues where the nervous and digestive systems are under pressure.

Chamomile is used as a supplement in Germany by high-flying business executives as a digestive, helping to prevent over production of acid bile so often associated with stomach ulceration. Volatile oil in the plant’s chemistry helps relax the smooth muscle in the digestive tract while calming irritation on the gut wall.

On other parts of the continent it is recommended for hay fever due to its action on the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract and it is thought to reduce the reaction of allergens such as pollen and dust.

Chamomile can also be used as an ointment for skin conditions such as nappy rash, sore nipples from breastfeeding, chafing and dry, thinning skin.

There is no end to the remarkable chemistry of this versatile herb. From flower bed to medicine chest, it is one of Nature’s treasures.

it worked for me!Terry Walton, the resident gardener on Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine Show, was recently introduced to Sapphire Blueberry Shots, and this is what he said:

“After three weeks of taking Blueberry Shots, my general wellbeing has improved and I feel much more positive in myself. The taste alone is very uplifting and its natural contents are something I enjoy as standalone natural additions to my life – namely honey and blueberries – but this simple one ‘shot’ dose is easy to take. I have reduced my intake to one 20ml amount per day now and I still feel in a better state of health and carry on with my daily life in a positive and uninterrupted manner. This was a great find for me and I will continue to take this daily dose to assist my long-term health.”

I want Your Health

Sharon Little, Pravera’s Sales and Marketing Co-ordinator, answers:“Men are far more amenable to using skincare products than even a decade

ago, so I’m sure you will be able to persuade him to change from soap and water to a good skincare regime. Just using soap and water, although hygienic, will dry out skin leaving it rough and dull looking. Men’s skin is different to women’s as it is up to 30% thicker and produces more sebum which tends to mean oilier skin. So it’s important to provide him with skincare designed specifically for men and with the correct ingredients to balance and moisturise.

Men often suffer from rough skin, irritation and razor burn, so the most important thing to remember is to use only natural and organic ingredients in order not to irritate or aggravate further.

You asked: “I would like to encourage my husband to start taking better care of his skin as, at the moment, all he uses is soap and water. I’d like him to start using some natural products but I’m not

sure what to look for. What sort of ingredients are best for male skin?”

A Nutritional therapist Sally Wisbey answers:An allergy occurs when the body’s immune system reacts inappropriately to a substance that is not normally harmful and treats it like an invader

causing it to overact and trigger inflammation in the body.Diet can play a big role in allergies and avoiding dairy can be

a great help as this is known to cause mucus and inflammation. Wheat and sugar are also known as inflammatory foods so cutting back on these can help. Increase foods rich in vitamins A, C and E and the minerals zinc and selenium. These are found in bright red, orange, yellow and dark green vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds and all have powerful antioxidant actions, vital for supporting the immune system. Vitamin C has also been shown to produce a natural antihistamine effect on the body.

Onions and garlic have been used to help allergies allergies due to their high levels of quercetin which helps inhibit allergy and inflammatory responses. Bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapple and nuts, also has anti-inflammatory actions and

increases the absorption of quercetin. Foods rich in omega-3 and 6 essential fats can help reduce hay fever symptoms. These are found in oily fish, nuts and seeds.

Around 70% of our immune system lives in our digestive tract so you might want to consider taking a good quality probiotic which provides healthy bacteria, essential for immune system health.

You asked: “I have suffered with allergies for several years now and I’m wondering whether my diet might not be helping. I always seem to be a bit sneezy and have a runny nose and itchy skin. I read somewhere that dairy might contribute to these

symptoms. Should I consider cutting it out of my diet? Could other foods be to blame too?”

February 2013 www.yourhealthyliving.co.uk | 15

You may be inspired to shift those stubborn pounds by taking a different approach. By cutting down on acid-forming foods and taking ph-balancing minerals. Food such as sugar, dairy, meat and wheat tend to throw the body’s pH balance off kilter, causing sluggish energy, bloating and weight gain or difficulty in losing weight.

When the body’s pH levels get really out of balance, the body is thrown into acid overload, or acidosis, and all sorts of aches and muscle tension, skin complaints, brittle nails, dull hair and a general lack of well-being can result.

Eating more alkaline foods, such as mushrooms and oily fish, can help, as will

You're on a calorie controlled diet and feel tired all the time. Burning fat releases acid ions which make you feel sluggish.

You run on adrenaline and find it hard to relax. Adrenaline leads to acid formation in the body.

That headache has come back and your muscles feel tense. A sign of stress, tight muscles indicate acid build-up.

Cheese, meat and bread are favourite foods. These are major acid forming foods.

You drink alcohol several times a week and drink coffee daily, or both. This is a recipe for the creation of acidic waste products.

You have recently lost weight. When you lose weight you release previously stored toxins into the body, thus increasing your acidity.

It’s the time of year when we dread getting on the scales. When we suspect, but are loathe to confirm, that we are still carrying a few festive season extra kilos. When we know we should have joined that January keep fit class but we want to stay warm and cosy indoors.

The weight loss buddy

Take the acid test

Pascoe pH Balance contains carbonate salts which help to neutralise the build up of acid in the body.

How do I know if I’m acid?Pascoe pH-balance includes a pack of litmus test strips to quickly reveal your acid-alkaline level, so you can test yourself before and after taking pH-balancing minerals and see the difference. Test strips can also be bought separately from www.phstrip.co.uk

How can I try this?Pascoe pH-balance is available as a powder (RRP £14.95 for 100g) and as capsules (RRP £15.95 for 100 tablets).

How does pH-Balance work?

taking a ph-balancing supplement for six weeks or during any diet or detox period. pH-balancing minerals are particularly helpful for reducing those cravings for carbs.

In fact, with any diet or detox regime it’s a good idea to consider taking a ph-balancing supplement, as acidic ions collect around fat cells and when these break down, a flux of free fatty acids can be released which can further increase the body’s acid pH level. Acidic ions being released into the body could also be a reason why we feel tired when slimming. So restoring your pH balance is a natural way to support any diet and exercise programme.

Did you know that up to 60% of what you put on your skin may be absorbed into your bloodstream? So

it’s more important than ever to check the labels of beauty products. If there’s a long list of synthetic chemicals, do you want to put these on your face and body day after day?

If you choose vitamin and botanical extract ingredients, you’ll be helping to feed your skin rather than suffocate it with petrochemicals, plasticisers and the like.

“Many mass market beauty products carry an array of potentially harmful ingredients that have absolutely no benefit to our skin, hair and bodies,” says natural beauty blogger Rebecca Goodyear from Biteable Beauty (www.biteablebeauty.com).

“Most of the chemicals that go into our toiletries are little or no different from the harsh, toxic chemicals used in industry,” adds Ian Taylor, Information and Research manager for natural beauty company Green People (www.greenpeople.co.uk). “The cosmetic industry will not tell you that some of the ingredients used in its products are health hazards, but that is no reason to remain uninformed. Who wants stinging eyes, reddened skin, or allergic contact dermatitis, not to mention an increased risk of conditions such as eczema and psoriasis?”

The makers of organic and truly natural beauty products focus on ingredients that enhance your skin’s health, and plant-derived preservatives and enhancers that won’t irritate or stop your skin from breathing.

“When you buy quality, natural products you can be confident that the key ingredients are full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to help protect, repair and nourish your skin and hair,” says Rebecca. “Your body will look and feel better whilst you will also not be exposed to the toxic build-up of continued use of synthetic nasties.”

100% NATURAL AND ORGANIC SKINCARE

www.lavera.co.uk

Ian Taylor, Information and Research manager for Green People (www.greenpeople.co.uk), says: “Almost every skin care product on the market today describes itself as natural or pure. It’s the marketing buzzword of today and it sells. Applied to skin care products it is also the most misused word in the English language.

“There are thousands of chemicals in ‘natural’ products, as many as 20 in any one product. It may be misleading, but it’s not illegal. The beauty industry must be the only one in the world where a product laden with chemicals and synthetic additives can be labelled ‘natural’ providing it contains as little as 1% natural ingredients!

What about hair dyes? An estimated 50% of women use them but some hair dye ingredients have been linked to an increased risk of bladder cancer – the risk appears to be connected to the length of time the toxins stay in the body, so it may be a good idea to flush them through the bladder by drinking plenty of water immediately afterward your hair is dyed. A better option is to use vegetable based dyes or for longer lasting colour, dyes that are ammonia and peroxide-free.

The power of natural There’s a plethora of natural ingredients found in beauty products that harness the power of nature. Here are a few examples:

Sweet almond oil is rich in the omega fatty acids oleic acid and linoleic acid. It is particularly good for soothing and moisturising dry skin and can also be used for conditioning hair.

Aloe vera helps to soothe and hydrate the skin. It is used in skin and haircare products as well as sun protection products for its cooling properties.

Green tea is more than just a healthy cuppa – it has a number of beauty benefits as well. Often found in cleansers and moisturisers, it may help to fight ageing, giving skin a glow and healing blemishes.

Jojoba oil is rich in the antioxidant vitamin E which is often taken orally for its anti-ageing power. It also contains vitamin B which helps with hyperpigmentation and evening out skin tone. Jojoba oil makes a great natural moisturiser for the face and body and gives hair a deep conditioning treatment too.

If you want to have confidence that your chosen beauty products are truly natural, visit your nearest independent health food shop, many of which have online stores too. They offer free and unbiased help, and a range of organic and natural skin and cosmetic products.

Don’t be caught out by the word ‘natural’ alone

Examples of some nasties you might want to avoid...Ethanol - we know ethanol is an alcohol but did you know it is used to make varnish and paint remover? Yuk!

Mercury – used as a preservative in mascara and foundation products in particular. Who needs it?!

Petrochemicals – why put oil by-products on your face and block your pores in the process?

Polyvinylpyrrolidone – this plastic resin is common in hair styling products and easy to inhale, not great for your lungs!

Parabens – these preservatives used in many skincare and beauty products to prolong shelf life can cause skin irritation, rashes and allergic reactions.

Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS) - highly irritating even in low concentrations but a major ingredient in ordinary soaps and toothpaste.

Synthetic fragrances - can dry out and irritate your skin but may not be listed in the ingredients, so the only way to avoid them is... buy 100% natural.

Did you know?… ❋ That each year over 100,000

tons of man-made chemicals are

dumped into so called ‘natural’

cosmetics!

❋ That women can absorb up to

2 kg (4.4 lb.) of chemicals through

their skin every year.

A touch mineral

Not only is mineral make-up chemical-free but it also has a number of benefits for your skin. Robyn Mason explains all

Mineral make-up is made from ground-up rocks, called mica. It is rich in naturally occurring

minerals and, because it’s free from chemicals and hidden nasties, it’s generally considered to be much kinder to skin. Most mineral make-up is in powder form, which is why it is most often used in foundation.

Why is it so good for us? Cosmetically speaking, mineral make-up is known for its lightweight yet long-lasting coverage. You don’t have to use a huge amount – just a dusting of powder is usually enough – and if applied properly, it will last all day.Mineral make-up is also light-reflecting, making it particularly flattering for older skin types, and because it literally dusts the face, it doesn’t settle into existing fine lines and wrinkles to make them appear larger. It’s also

February 201320 | www.yourhealthyliving.co.uk

yourlook

of

magic

easy to remove and it doesn’t clog pores, which is great news if you’re prone to spots.

Lightweight, long-lasting, chemical-free and non-ageing, it’s easy to see why mineral make-up is so popular with make-up artists the world over, and why so many make-up giants now offer mineral cosmetics within their ranges.

However, in addition to its practicality, mineral make-up also has a number of skincare benefits. One of the biggest is its natural sun protection factor. The two most commonly used ingredients in mineral make-up are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which have natural UVA and UVB-blocking properties.

Wearing minerals means that you can skip the SPF in your skincare regimen, meaning fewer layers and fewer chemicals on your skin!

And because mineral make-up is anti-inflammatory and pH neutral, it is also highly recommended for inflammatory skin conditions, such as acne, rosacea and eczema. People have even noticed an improvement in their skin, just from changing their traditional pore-clogging and chemical laden make-up to mineral make-up.

Lastly, because it’s free from chemical nasties, mineral make-up helps to reduce ‘total toxic load’ on the body for those who are detoxing.

With so many perceived benefits you’d be forgiven for thinking this magical powder is too good to be true! It is harder to apply and application can be a little time-consuming, which can be off-putting for some people, but once you’ve got the hang of it, the results are well worth the effort!

Introducing EFT Step-by-Step Tapping by Sue Beer and Emma Roberts (£14.99, Gaia) is a new book which features innovative approach to healing the mind and body. Tapping or EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a therapeutic method which trains your brain to overcome even lifelong negative patterns, helping individuals to overcome stress, beat addictive problems and make positive changes in their life. In this illustrated book, the authors demonstrate how EFT works before explaining how to apply the technique to various life issues in individual chapters. A useful and interesting introduction to this complementary therapy.

The lowdown on…

Indian Head Massage What’s it all about? Indian head massage, also known as Champissage, is a form of alternative massage therapy. The aim is to release stress and bring about relaxation through massage of the head, neck and face. Some therapists believe that this form of massage can help to clear blocks in the body’s energy channels and enable that energy to flow more freely, therefore promoting health and wellbeing.

What’s involved? The client sits in a chair or lies on a massage table for the treatment. The therapist uses a range of different massaging movements such as deep kneading and compression over the neck, shoulder and scalp areas. They will also gently stimulate pressure points on the head and face. A session typically lasts between 30 to 45 minutes.

How can it help me? There are many benefits to be gained from Indian head massage. These include soothing, tension, easing headaches, relieving eyestrain, restoring concentration and reducing tiredness, promoting general relaxation, improving hair growth and hair condition.

Dairy products which are rich in calcium and vitamin D may help to support bone and joint health, for example yoghurt, cheese and milk. Oily fish such as salmon and sardines contain omega-3 fatty acids which are anti-inflammatory and may help with joints. Sardines are also rich in calcium and vitamin D, both of which are essential for bone health. Calcium strengthens the bones whilst vitamin D helps the body to absorb the calcium into the bone matrix.

Fruit and vegetables contain antioxidants which help reduce inflammation, as do spices such as curcumin and turmeric. The skins of apples contain quercetin, a powerful antioxidant which helps to maintain collagen – the main component of cartilage – and acts as a shock absorber in joints.

Studies have found that a diet high in refined sugar can lead to a reduction in bone mineral density. A diet rich in protein may induce acidosis which worsens bone loss and joint damage. Red meat may lead to joint inflammation so this should be avoided too.

A combination of the following supplements would be beneficial for bone and joint health. Magnesium helps to stimulate the hormone calcitonin to preserve the bone structure. Magnesium oil spray with added glucosamine is perfect. Glucosamine has been demonstrated in large-scale, double-blind clinical studies to alleviate pain and aid joint construction.

Vitamin D is difficult to get from food – only 10% comes from our diet – so supplementing is essential, particularly during winter when we are not getting our intake from sunshine, as it helps calcium absorb into the bone. Vitamin K2 activates a protein hormone called osteocalcin, which is produced by osteoblasts, and binds calcium into the bone matrix.

Where supplements are concerned, I’d recommend using the most bioavailable form. For vitamin D, use oral sprays rather than tablets. For magnesium I personally use transdermal magnesium. Clinical trials have found that sub-lingual and transdermal forms are more easily absorbed, as they don’t need to be retained through the digestive system.

How to care for your bones and joints

Strength training with weights, resistant bands and weight machines will help to stimulate the osteoblasts to produce new bone. However, high impact exercises such as running, jogging, dancing, tennis and skipping can cause excessive stress on bones and joints. Instead, choose low impact exercises such as swimming, light cycling, water aerobics, elliptical trainer and step machine.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body. It helps keep connective tissue flexible, enabling our bones and cartilage to bear weight. It repairs worn joint cartilage, maintains existing joint cartilage and helps the body to produce new cartilage.

Collagen supplements are the natural alternative to drugs and steroids (NSAIDs). They assist joint mobility and provide a route to an active and fulfilling lifestyle. They offer no unpleasant side effects, whereas drugs/steroids serve to mask pain. While it remains a fact that there is currently no medical cure for arthritis, collagen supplements are proven to slow down the process and help repair and rebuild worn cartilage in joints.

Osteoarthritis is caused by the cartilage, which cushions joints, simply wearing away to create bone-on-bone and varying levels of pain. Around 75,000 Britons a

Besides improving general fitness, function, strength and suppleness, a good exercise programme is a vital component of maintaining a strong and healthy skeletal and joint system. But not just any old exercise, specifically it’s the load-bearing and resistance-based exercise that commands your bones to thicken and your joints to continue to maintain their lubrication. It really is that old case of ‘use it or lose it’ that we’ve heard so many times.

As we exercise, the muscles pull on the bones and it’s this pulling that triggers the internal bone growth that increases the density of the bones. Once the density reaches a certain level, the bones, just like muscles, start to thicken and grow, meaning that your body can withstand even greater stresses.

Calcium is not beneficial to bone health in the absence of magnesium. Calcium is like cement and hardens bone. This may sound good but hard bone fractures easily. It takes magnesium to make the bones hard yet pliable so they can adapt to forces coming through them. The higher the calcium, the more likely

year undergo a hip replacement due to worn cartilage and cases of osteoarthritis in Britain look set to double to over 17 million by 2030. It is also a fact that from the age of 25, collagen levels reduce at about 1.5% every year. Joints stiffen. By the age of 45, collagen levels may have reduced by up to 30%. Collagen supplements can redress and improve the symptoms of osteoarthritis/joint conditions.

It is important that, when choosing collagen supplements, joint health sufferers look carefully for the collagen content in the products available. These levels can vary significantly, but the basic guide is quite simple – look for the products with the highest collagen content, taken as a drink.

n www.arthrovite.com

you are to get fractures – and heart attacks etc. Calcium is added to many, many foods, making it likely that people are over calcified. Magnesium, on the other hand, is rarely added.

And the joints? Well, most of the joints that we get pain and arthritis in are known as ‘synovial joints’, in reference to the synovial fluid that covers them and lubricates them for improved glide and movement. Load-bearing exercise is very beneficial for these joints as it squeezes the fluid out of the membranes and ‘oils’ the joints regularly across their full range of motion.

In my opinion, arthritis is avoidable and curable. Any word ending in ‘itis’ means ‘inflammation’ and is reversible – as long as the source of inflammation is removed. Most inflammation is caused by poor diet rather than overuse or misuse of the joints. Dehydration is a primary factor in joint pain. Dehydration means dry joints that inflame far easier and hence create pain.

powerBrainWe take a look at some essential nutrients and other natural remedies to support a healthy brain

yourhealth

30 | www.yourhealthyliving.co.uk

A healthy brain is critical for pretty much everything we do in our daily lives – from thinking and feeling to

working and playing. And, like the physical body, our brains may lose some agility we get older. Fortunately there are steps you can take to support the health of your brain in the form of good nutrition, herbal remedies and lifestyle factors. Let’s take a look at these in more detail.

Essential nutrients “Vitamin D, iron and B vitamins are the most important nutrients for maintaining a healthy brain and normal mental function,” says Dr Carrie Ruxton, nutritionist at the Health Supplements Information Service (www.hsis.org). “A daily multivitamin with iron is an easy way to get the right amounts of these. Good dietary sources of vitamin D include oily fish, eggs, red meat and

February 2013

BlueBerry Benefits “Blueberries have long been considered a superfood for their powerful antioxidant properties, but now scientists believe this potent berry can boost brain performance and help protect against neurodegeneration,” says John Carey of CherryActive, suppliers of BlueberryActive Concentrate (www.cherryactive.co.uk). “Flavonoids are a group of antioxidants that contribute to the colour of plant-based foods and which are proven to improve memory function and sharpen concentration. Darker berries tend to have a higher flavonoid value, due to their rich colour, and increase blood flow to the brain, resulting in elevated brain activity.”

A study carried out at the University of Cincinatti, involving a group of pensioners with signs of dementia, found that blueberries helped to sharpen recall, even when the memory had started to fail. During the 12-week study half of the group of 18 drank two cups of blueberry juice every day for two to three months and half drank a placebo. After 12 weeks the group drinking the juice showed improvements in word association tasks and recalling words from a list and also had reduced symptoms of depression. The results were published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

fortified dairy foods. Sources of B vitamins include broccoli and cabbage for folate, turkey or mushrooms for niacin, beans or wholegrains for vitamins B1 and B2, and bananas or eggs for vitamin B6. Iron is found in red meat and green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, but meat contains the type that is best absorbed – called haem iron.”

She continues: “B vitamins are key components of neurotransmitters which are chemicals that carry messages around the brain. Examples are dopamine and serotonin. Folate and the vitamins B6 and B12 also help to keep levels of homocysteine low (this amino acid is a by-product of metabolism which is believed to damage brain cells). Iron is effective because it prevents iron-deficiency anaemia, common side-effects of which are fatigue and poor mental function.”

Omega-3 fatty acids “Composed of 70% fat and particularly rich in omega-3 fatty acids, the brain, like a computer, is responsible for controlling a vast array of complex networks and processes,” says Nina Bailey, head of Clinical Nutrition at Igennus Healthcare Nutrition (www.igennus-hn.com). “Consuming two portions of fish (preferably oily) per week, provides the body with a rich source of brain-supporting omega-3 fats EPA and DHA. These essential fats will help keep cell membranes ‘fluid’ and ensure optimal ‘firing’ of the billions of neurons involved in processes such as memory and learning.

With DHA playing a major structural role in brain health, it is the presence and action of circulating EPA that, in contrast, appears vital for brain function. Generally, DHA levels plateau in childhood, remaining stable into adulthood. In contrast, EPA requirements increase. Purified EPA (a potent anti-inflammatory in supplement form) offers a convenient and safe method for protecting against cognitive decline and the development of mood disorders such as depression.”

Use it or lose it! “Alcohol is a poison that damages brain cells when taken in regular amounts,” warns Dr Ruxton. “A healthy limit is 1-2 units a day (A large glass of wine or a gin and tonic). Contrary to beliefs, caffeine is good for mental function as long as you take it in natural products, such as black tea, rather than caffeine pills.

“I always believe that ‘if you don’t use it, you lose it’, so keep your brain active with Sudoko, crosswords or mental arithmetic. Also, plant compounds called polyphenols help to boost blood flow to the brain, so try a supplement or eat more citrus fruits, berries and colourful vegetables.”

HerBal Help “Herbs can help by improving the overall health and wellbeing of an individual, which in turn contributes to mental health and brain function,” says herbalist Joe Pawson (www.earthmedicines.co.uk). “In the hectic and stressful modern world herbs have an important role to play in helping us deal with stress and anxiety, allowing us to relax more effectively and achieve greater mental clarity.”

sage is a common Mediterranean shrub found in many gardens in the UK and in many culinary dishes. Sage helps preserve acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter) in the brain which can help delay the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s, as Alzheimer’s is linked with reduced acetylcholine levels. Sage tea is made by infusing one to two teaspoons of sage in boiling water for 5-10 minutes, but should be avoided in pregnancy.

Gingko is the oldest species of tree on the planet and it is a traditional remedy for improving the memory. Studies show that gingko improves blood flow to the brain, is antioxidant and also anti-inflammatory – all important properties that contribute to the health of your brain. Although a very safe herb, gingko may have an additive effect when combined with other anti-platelet and anti-coagulant drugs such as warfarin and aspirin. Gingko tea is made using one to two teaspoons of gingko in boiling water for 5-10 minutes.

lemon balm is a fantastic, sweet-smelling plant, originally introduced to gardens from south Europe, and now grows freely in the UK. It has long been regarded as ‘strengthening’ to the brain and it has a brilliant reputation for enhancing the memory, soothing anxieties and improving low mood. To make a tea, put two sprigs of lemon balm into a cup and cover with very hot, but not boiling water. Leave to steep for 5-10 minutes and then remove the plant material from the cup.

Nutritionist Dr Sarah Schenker offers five quick and healthy snack suggestions

yourhealth

W hen you feel peckish in between meals it can be tempting to reach for a biscuit or a bar of chocolate, especially when your

energy levels are flagging. However, sugary things like these will cause your blood sugar levels to spike and then crash, leaving you hungry and fatigued. Try these healthy snack suggestions from nutritionist Dr Sarah Schenker (www.sarahschenker.co.uk) to help you sail through the day.

Sardine paté on oatcakesFor this snack you need to take a tin of

sardines and drain off the oil. Mix with 2tbsp of low fat soft cheese, a squeeze of lemon juice and lots of black pepper. Serve on oatcakes, topped with cucumber. The sardines contain long chain omega-3 fats to keep the heart and joints healthy. They are also rich in vitamin D which works with the calcium in the cheese to support bone health. Oatcakes are low in fat and high in soluble fibre which lowers blood cholesterol levels. They are also low GI, so release energy slowly making you feel fuller for longer.

Mozzarella balls and cherry tomato ‘kebabs’

Thread the mozzarella balls (choose a reduced fat version) and cherry tomatoes onto wooden skewers and drizzle them with olive oil. There is protein and calcium in the cheese and lycopene in the tomatoes, which is a powerful antioxidant that can help to prevent damage to cells in the body, maintaining good health and lowering the risk of disease.

Guacamole with

vegetable crudités The avocados in guacamole are a good source of healthy fats, which are needed for heart health. They are also rich in vitamin E which is needed for immunity. Vegetable crudités such as carrots and peppers are a good source of vitamins A and C.

Wholemeal English muffin with peanut butter or a nut butter The muffin provides a good source of fibre for healthy guts, while the nuts contain healthy fats, and are packed full of vitamins and minerals such as zinc, selenium and vitamin E for good overall health.

A glass of soya milk and a bananaYou could either have these separately or blend them together to make a smoothie. There is good

quality protein in the soya milk which can help you to feel fuller for longer. Soya is also good for heart health. Bananas are a good source of energy and potassium, which helps to regulate blood pressure.

fairFair’s

We take a look at some of the reasons why you should consider buying fair-trade

Turn the page for some tasty fairtrade recipe ideas. ➜

When you do your weekly shop how often do you think to buy fair-trade products? By simply

swapping some of your usual goods for fair-trade versions you can help to bring about a better deal for third world producers. This month sees Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from 25 February to 10 March 2013, and which is about championing the fair-trade cause.

Why should you choose fair-trade? Often, producers in developing countries do not get paid enough to cover the cost of growing their crops or making their products, which can lead them into poverty and the loss of their homes and land. The fair-trade movement is about better prices, decent working conditions, local

sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the third world. Fairtrade products are guaranteed to cover the cost of sustainable production which allows many poor small farmers to get back on their feet and out of poverty.

Farmers who work within fair trade projects are guaranteed long term partnerships with buyers, sustainable working conditions and financial credit without fear of exploitation. Fair-trade ensures that factory workers are paid decent wages, have health and safety standards, the right to join trade unions and are provided with a conducive work environment. The Fairtrade Foundation maintains these standards by inspecting Third World suppliers and checking contracts and trade terms.

Fairtrade also benefits the communities

How to support fair-traden You don’t need to trawl the shops for hours looking for fairtrade products as they are available in independent health food stores, cafes, restaurants and elsewhere.n Look for products that are certified with the Fairtrade Mark by the Fairtrade Foundation. Over 3,000 products from coffee and fruit to sugar and wine are Fairtrade certified.

in developing countries. Users of the fair-trade mark must pay a premium which is invested in social, environmental or economic development projects which are decided upon by producers within the farmers’ organisation or by workers on a plantation.

Look for the fair-trade mark The Fairtrade mark is a registered certification label that appears on UK products to show that they have been sourced from producers in developing countries. In order for a product to display this mark it has to meet international Fairtrade standards which are set by the international certification body Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International(FLO). 4 Freedom Food-labelled skinless chicken legs or 8 thighs

2 medium onions, peeled and sliced

20ml vegetable oil

1 tsp Fairtrade cumin seeds

¾ tbsp organic Fairtrade cocoa powder, sieved

1 tsp smoked paprika

4 garlic cloves crushed

1 sprig thyme

2 Fairtrade bay leaves

40ml Fairtrade red wine – preferably Merlot

30-40g plain flour

50-60g Fairtrade clear honey

Pinch of sea salt or to taste

Ground Fairtrade black pepper to taste

Extra virgin Fairtrade olive oil

Serves: 4

1 Divide the chicken legs in half through the natural joint without splintering the bones.

2 Season with salt and pepper, then add the bay leaves, thyme, crushed garlic and dust with paprika. Add enough oil to coat and leave to infuse for at least an hour, or allow more time for stronger flavours to develop.

3 Preheat the oven to 170°C/fan oven 150°C/ gas mark 3.

4 Heat a heavy-based pan and carefully place the pieces of chicken in it – no more oil is required, just the marinade. Fry the chicken on both sides until evenly golden.

5 Remove the chicken from the pan with the herbs and garlic. Set aside and keep warm.

6 Add the sliced onions to the pan and sweat down until soft, then add a dash of water and place a lid on to steam the onions. Add the cocoa powder and stir, then stir in the clear honey. Return the chicken pieces and herbs etc, and combine with the onion mixture.

7 Sprinkle over enough flour to absorb any fat residue and form a basic roux. Stir in the wine, and continue to stir until the sauce thickens. Bring to simmer and remove any impurities that rise to the surface with a spoon.

8 Replace the lid on the pan and bring to the boil. Place the dish in the oven for 30 minutes. After 15 minutes remove the lid and return to the oven for a further 15 minutes to allow the food to glaze. Finish with a dash of olive oil for a glossy appearance and serve.

T he first thing to consider is the ingredients list on product bottles or containers. Carefully read through the list to check there are no ingredients you

should avoid such as anything that is listed as parfum, which are synthetic fragrances that are harmful to the environment. Other chemical nasties to avoid are petrochemicals, phosphates, preservatives and enzymes.

Do your homeworkKnowing your ingredients is vitally important when choosing eco-friendly cleaning products. I would recommend checking online to increase your knowledge of chemicals and names that you do not immediately recognise when reading a product label. Having this knowledge really is empowering when choosing products. Take a notepad and pen with you when shopping and jot down any unfamiliar materials or ingredients named, particularly those that are complicated and difficult to remember.

Once back at home, or at your desk, pop the names into Google and find out what is actually in your products. This will help you to identify environmentally-friendly cleaning product options and the type of ingredients you may find in these ranges such as plant extracts, coconut oil and ethically-sourced palm oil. In addition, many natural cleaning ranges are also suitable for sensitive skin and have been allergy tested.

SeaSonS health food Store, exeter, devon• Seasons is a well-established

independent health food shop that first opened in 1978. Husband and wife Rob and Rachel Barker took over the ownership of the store three years ago and have introduced a much larger product range.

• Seasons is proud to support local food producers and stocks over 30 different supplier products. These include twice weekly deliveries from nearby Shillingford Farm providing organic fruit and vegetables, approved by the Soil Association. The store also has a deli counter which offers a selection of takeaway products provided by local suppliers.

• The shop stocks natural toiletries, beauty supplies and essential oils. Some supplements and homeopathic remedies are also available.

• To find out more, visit www.seasons4food.co.uk, call 01392 201282 or send an email to [email protected]

• Lara is a fan of Your Healthy Living because: “It has a really vibrant feel to it and contains lots of great advice on how to stay naturally healthy.”

Environmental impactAlso look at where the product was manufactured. To minimise the environmental impact, think about buying locally and choosing natural products that were made in the UK. Some eco-friendly cleaning products may contain a host of natural ingredients yet the product has a considerable environmental impact as it is made outside of the UK. Another factor that is important to many people is a guarantee that the product has not been tested on animals.

The packaging of the product is also important to consider if you want to buy a more eco-friendly cleaning option. Look at whether the packaging is recycled and will produce less waste. Also think about whether you could reuse the bottle or container to increase its lifespan. Products which are made from renewable sources or can be easily recycled are popular choices for environmentally-aware customers. Some cleaning products also offer refills and you may also find your local independent health store can provide you with a refill for your product.

An ethical choiceDon’t forget your local independent health store can also help with product selections and be on hand to advise on eco-friendly cleaning options available in the store. If you are seeking a particular product, your local health store may also be able to order this in for you. Information on environmentally-considerate cleaning products may also be on display in your local health store. This can be a good source of information and provide reassurance that you are making an ethically-sound cleaning choice.

Dr Pierre Dukan, creator of the internationally successful Dukan Diet, talks to Your Healthy Living about how he developed the diet plan and lets us in on the secrets of his own health regime

What prompted you to devise the Dukan Diet?

Pierre: From my early childhood, I knew I would be a doctor. By the age of 23 I had set up a small surgery in Montparnasse, France. In the mornings I studied

neurology, and in the afternoons I gave consultations as a GP. One of my patients was very obese and asked me to help him lose weight. Although I wanted to help, I declined, explaining that I knew nothing about nutrition. However, he insisted, saying: “I have to lose weight. Prescribe me any diet you want, get rid of any foods you like but not meat; I couldn’t not eat meat.”

I agreed to help and advised the patient to “eat meat, but as lean as possible, drink lots of water and come back in five days time”. After five days, the patient returned and to our amazement he had lost over five kilos. I then gave up neurology and concentrated on nutrition.

Q How did the diet develop from there?

Pierre: Working as a nutritionist, I realised that the low calorie diet system I had been taught at university was unproductive, difficult to follow, contained too many carbs and the weight loss achieved was slow. It was also disheartening for people who managed to lose weight because most of them put the weight back on again. This is why I changed direction. I started prescribing a diet based on proteins and the results were spectacular.

I added a second phase, adding vegetables. Then, seeing that my patients were quickly losing weight, I built the Consolidation phase. Keeping the proteins and vegetables, I added fruit, two slices of wholemeal bread and a portion of cheese per day plus two portions of carbohydrates and two celebration meals per week. For the first time my patients did not regain the weight. In the 1990s I added my fourth phase – Stabilisation – which sustained the weight loss for life. By 2000, I had a method that worked and, importantly, one that offered you a much better likelihood of stabilising the weight you slimmed down to.

Q What is the secret of your diet’s success?

Pierre: My diet allows you to lose your first pounds very quickly and this boosts motivation and confidence. What’s more, the diet is simple with 100 ‘eat as much as you want’ foods – 72 are high-protein foods and 28 are vegetables – and most of these foods are completely natural. My diet also abolishes hunger because these 100 foods come with the words ‘the more you eat them, the more weight you’ll lose’.

Q Why do you think that obesity is such an increasing problem in

today’s world?

Pierre: Obesity was very rare before 1945 – just 2% of the population was overweight. Today, it’s more like 50%. It’s therefore clear to me that it’s due to a fundamental change in society. We live in a time of hyper-consumerism – we eat more and move less. There’s also been a major

change in the food industry with the explosion of carb-rich convenience foods. Our bodies are simply not equipped to deal with the amount of white sugar and flour we consume.

Q Have you always been fit and healthy or have you ever struggled

with your diet?

Pierre: I have been lucky enough to always be fit and healthy and have never struggled with my weight but I do actively choose to live a healthy lifestyle. I run for 25 minutes every day. In addition to eating proteins and vegetables, I have two portions of fruit a day, mostly apples, two slices of wholemeal bread in the morning and two oat bran galettes per day, a portion of cheese and twice a week I have a portion of pasta with tomato sauce and parmesan along with two celebration meals – always on Friday evenings and very often on Monday evenings too.

Journalist and broadcaster Angela Rippon, 68, talks to Liz Parry about her diet and exercise regime and the importance of looking after your legs

At Your Healthy Living magazine we always like to find out how celebrities keep themselves fit and healthy. Do you follow a particular diet or healthy eating regime?

Angela: I’m gluten and lactose intolerant and have been since I had a very serious case of food poisoning about 20 years ago. That helps because it means I don’t eat a lot of bread and cakes! I do eat dairy foods but they tend to be from sheep or goats. I also have soya milk and cream. Fortunately there are many varieties of gluten-free pasta around so I’m able to enjoy wonderful lasagnas and spaghetti.

Q Do you enjoy cooking for yourself?

Angela: I love cooking – I’m an enthusiastic cook – and I love having friends come for dinner. I always cook everything from scratch – I never give anyone anything that has come from a tin or a packet. I have a wonderful organic food shop that is 200 yards from my front door so I’m able to source fresh vegetables quite easily. When I’m in Devon, where I have a home, I always buy from the local markets. I always try to buy organic and local produce.

Q Do you take any particular supplements or vitamins?

Angela: I take acidophilus after having had the food poisoning, to rebalance the bacteria in my gut, and I take cod liver oil capsules because as you get older you

12 | your healthy living

need a little help to oil the joints. And from time to time I take ginseng as that helps with general vitality – certainly that’s something I need for my job.

Q Do you ever worry about your health at all?

Angela: I suppose as you get older you do start to think how long is this machine going to keep on going? I have problems with my back as I used to ride and event in local clubs in Devon. I’ve had a couple of accidents and injured my back a couple of times so I have to be careful of that. I try to keep fit and healthy for the job that I do so I tend not to worry too much and, touch wood, I’m pretty healthy and still pretty supple.

Q How do you look after your skin?

Angela: I don’t drink tea and I rarely drink coffee, but I do drink a lot of water and herbal teas. That helps to keep my skin hydrated. Since I was young I have always followed a very strict cleansing and moisturising regime and I exfoliate my skin regularly. As you get older the top layer of the dermis tend to be dry and flaky and that’s what will give you open pores and help to make wrinkles in your skin. If you keep getting rid of that top layer of dead skin cells you will reveal the fresher, clearer skin underneath.

Q Can you tell us about your work with the Activa LegHealth

Campaign?

Angela: Basically it’s a campaign to make people understand how important it is to take care of your legs. Problems such as swollen ankles, varicose veins and leg

February 201344 | www.yourhealthyliving.co.uk

ulcers can have a huge impact on your mobility. Once you lose your mobility you lose your independence. Many leg conditions are caused by poor circulation in the leg veins. These veins have the uphill task of carrying blood back to the heart and can weaken as gravity takes its toll over time. Fortunately, even serious leg problems can respond well to treatment.

Q What types of exercise do you enjoy?

Angela: I try to play tennis as often as I can, I enjoy cycling and I go to Pilates classes. It strengthens the core muscles which helps my back enormously. I need to be fit for the job I do as sometimes I will be filming from 7.30am till 9pm. It’s no good flagging in the middle of the day when you have a schedule like that!

Q That is a long day! How do you keep your energy levels up?

Angela: I think I naturally have a lot of energy and I eat a healthy diet full of fresh fruit and vegetables and fish and chicken, so that helps. Also, I’m very fortunate in that I do a job that I love.

Q How do you relax at the end of a busy day’s filming?

Angela: I’m a voracious reader, I enjoy going to the movies and I like to have friends over for dinner – the same sort of things that most people do. I also enjoy tennis. It may not sound that relaxing, running around a tennis court for two hours, but you can’t really think about anything else other than the ball that’s coming over the net at you!
