About Astley Hire

Heating - We have a wide range of Heating equipment to suit your every need. From gas and diesel space saving heaters to electric

heaters that cover up to 3 phase supply.

Maintenance - Within our maintenance department we stock power tools, stock material handling equipment and building

equipment.

Training - You can not only hire the equipment from Astley Hire but we can also train your staff on safe operation of it. We are

an approved IPAF and PASMA training centre. We offer training daily at our Leigh Training centre.

Astley Hire is an independent hire company that has been trading for over 50 years. The business has changed considerably since Cyril and Mildred Dorricott founded the business in 1966. Astley Hire started in a hardware and grocery shop in Astley, hence the name. Astley Hire has operated in various locations over the years but in 2006 we consolidated the business into one depot – Lloyds Court on Jury Street, Leigh.

The Astley Hire business is split into 7 divisions:

Powered Access - We have a large fleet of MEWPs (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms) that will cover a wide range of applications.

From PAV to Booms and everything in between.

Cleaning - Our cleaning division has industrial cleaning equipment available for short or long term hire.

Scaffolding - We supply both Scaffold tower (in single and double width) and low level equipment like podium steps and delta

decks. We also have stairway towers and single man towers.

Cooling - We stock a wide range of Air Conditioning units, evaporative coolers and industrial fans, all of which can cool down a

wide range of environments.

The Work at Height Regulation 2005 (WAHR) places certain responsibilities on employers

The WAHR require employers and the self-employed to put into place arrangements for:

• Eliminating or minimising risks from working at height.

• Organising and planning the working at height.

• Selected suitable equipment to perform work at height.

Eliminating or minimising risks The primary objective is to eliminate working at height where possible and where it is not possible, to ensure that all work at height is performed safely and equipment is appropriately selected, whether it is powered access, mobile access tower or podium steps. This is something Astley Hire can help you with.

Health and Safety Organising and planning the workingPart of the organising and planning of work at height is picking the correct equipment and then ensuring that only trained and competent persons are permitted to use the equipment. Astley Hire training department are on hand to ensure your staff are trained to the required levels. Full risk assessment should be carried out before work commences with the following taken onto account:

• Height you need to reach.

• The task you need to perform.

• How long it will take.

• The work place, ground and site conditions.

• Access in and around the work area.

• External factors such as Weather, Vandalism, etc.

Our Training Centre is both IPAF (Internal Powered Access Federation) approved and PASMA (Prefabricated Access Supplier and Manufactures Association) approved. We run a wide range of courses every day at our Leigh Depot.

IPAF Operators’ Course – This is the basic course covering operation of MEWPS. This course which is part theory and part practical can cover 3 different types of machines:

1B – Powered Static Boom Lifts.

3A – Powered Mobile Vertical Lifts.

3B - Powered Mobile Boom Lifts.

Delegates have the choice of doing 1, 2 or all 3 categories on a full day course.

IPAF MEWPS for Managers – Giving the managers knowledge they need to comply with Regulations and to run a productive site.

Astley Hire Training

IPAF PAV – This course is specifically designed for delegates who use and operate Push Around Vertical Platforms.

IPAF MEWPS Harness Training – Covering all aspects of Harness and Lanyard selection, inspection and use.

PASMA Tower for Users – For those who assemble, dismantle, move and inspect mobile access towers over 2.5 meters.

PASMA Low Level Access Course – For personnel who work on prefabricated units less than 2.5 meters of height.

PASMA Combined – comprehensive course covering all prefabricated units.

PASMA Management of Mobile Access Towers – For Managers and Supervisors responsible for overseeing site work .



Astley Hire offer Machine Guard to all our customers who don’t have their own separate ‘hired in plant’ insurance. Our simple, low cost “Machine Guard” protects against theft, accidental and malicious damage. You don’t need expensive, comprehensive Plant Insurance, “Machine Guard” is the automatic, fast, no fuss alternative, which gives customers piece of mind when handling expensive machinery.

Insurance cover is something every hire company needs to have in place due to the expense of various equipment and it is essential to know their equipment is covered before it leaves the depot. Traditionally, customers have had to arrange their own ‘hired in-plant’ insurance but our Machine Guard cover saves a lot of time and hassle for customers. As well as time and money spent, it can a be minefield of small print - small print that excludes some of the crucial cover you need.

• Cover is charged as 15% of Hire rate.

• Excess of policy is £500.

MI TOWER

MiTOWER is the world’s first one-man, quick assembly access tower, making scaffold access available to the individual.

The unique design allows a single worker to erect the sturdy scaffold tower in under 10 minutes, maximising the available working time.

With a small stabiliser footprint the MI Tower is ideal for use in a variety of spaces. When dismantled, the towers can be stored in the compact trolley that doubles as the secure tower base, keeping all the parts together for easy reuse.

The MI tower Plus is a One man build scaffold tower that accommodates two men working at an height up to 8 meters.

The Unique design means the Mi Tower plus is easy to transport and fits through standard doorways. When dismantled, the tower can be stored in the compact trolley that doubles as the secure base and allows for all the components to be kept together.

The Mi Tower Plus set works at a range of heights from 4 meter working height up to a maximum for 8 meters. The tower has a build time of under 20 minutes when done safely and securely.

Fully Compliant with EN1004 Class 3.

The Safe working load is 275Kg this allows for two men and the tools they need to complete the job.

Podium Steps & Ladders

If it’s a light duty task that will take less than 30 minutes and the task can be completed mostly with one hand or you need temporary access to a fixed working platform. A risk assessment may find a Ladder, Stepladder or Combination Ladder is suitable.


The maximum working height stated gives an appropriate maximum overhead task height based on HSE advice (Standing on first step down on a stepladder with a top handrail. On the fourth rung down on a ladder).
