Moving to Augusta

l First move was to Augusta, GA.l I knew no one in Georgia!l No one my age at the plant.l Started back doing the one “hobby” I had…l Started taking lessons at the facility that housed the

Augusta State University Equestrian Team.

Commentary: Taking riding lessons at a facility that housed a college team was my way of trying to meet people outside of work that were the same age and had similar interests. In a similar way, starting your own Young Professionals section in conjunction with your local AIChE section would be a way to meet other people the same age with similar interests. I wish I had known about Young Professionals sections when I first moved away from college!

Moving to Florida

l …and I move yet again to a place where I know NO ONE!

l This time, I brought a horse with me from Georgia… activities outside of work are great for meeting people with similar interests!

l Some of the people in the Pace Plant are actually my age!

Commentary: Again, staying with my main hobby interest led me to meet others that had the same interests as I do. Being a part of AIChE is very important to keep your network of other chemical engineers healthy. However, at the same time, for me it was also very important to give my brain a rest from chemical engineering so I didn’t get burnt out, which is why I also make it a point to seek out other activities, namely horseback riding, as well.

In Summary…

l Don’t be afraid to take a job that requires you to movel Moving around can be a great experience to live in

different parts of the country (and sometimes even other countries!).

l A willingness to relocate can give you an edge over other job candidates.

l Good Luck in your job hunt☺!!

Commentary: Don’t be afraid to move to other parts of the country (or the world even!). Moving will only give you more of a chance to meet and become familiar with other Young Professionals within AIChE and to expand your network. Expanding your national network can only help you in advancing your career!
