Reconstructor or Osmo Repair Mask.

The Osmo treatment tub is £6.95 and

available in our salon, as is L’anza and

ghd, or available online.

Q. An old favourite:

between each visit and look forward to

getting pampered as well each time.

Q. Fix my frizzy hair?

A. On a budget ?

Home care essentials from L’anza or

ghd-moisturising shampoo, keratin oil

treatment and/or heat protector spray

I noticed my mum had serious problems

with drugs on my 10th birthday. When

I got in from school she was lying on

the couch and I couldn’t wake her up.

I phoned 999 and an ambulance

took her to hospital. The Police and

Social Workers arrived and I went to

my Granny’s house. By the time the

ambulance arrived, my mum had

stirred a bit. She was lucky to be alive.

I had noticed mum acting a bit strange

before she went into hospital. She would

sleep a lot, sounded slurred when she

was talking and sometimes she would be

rushing about not really sure what she

was doing. She would shout at me to get

to my room and she would talk to people

at the front door. I heard her crying,

sometimes sobbing.

She would do things like forget to get my

school uniform sorted out for a Monday

morning, so I had to sort this myself and

take some of the pressure off her. My

friend lived just along the road but her

Mum didn’t seem strange at all. She was

good fun and always seemed fresh and

organised with dinner and the washing.

Her mum worked in Tesco and always

brought in treats on a Friday night.

Things eventually got better and she

started going to the chemist every day

for medication called Methadone.

A woman from social work came to the

house every week after school to talk

to me. She would help my mum sort out

money worries and organise things like

the cleaning, washing and shopping. She

took us out for the day to the art galleries

which was great as it was good to get out

of the house. The North West Community

Addiction Team staff had referred us to

the Cordia Family Support Service for

this support. It was great because the

workers gave a lot of support to my mum

and were also interested in me.

Page 19: Young Glasgow Magazine

I felt at the time the problem had gone on

forever, even though it hadn’t. My mum

had actually developed a problem with

drugs really quickly which made me think

she was going to die. I’m glad I was home

from school that day. The fear that Mum

might die held me back from going to

school. Everyone kept telling me I could

sit my Highers and even go to university

but I couldn’t wait to leave school to be

with mum. Granny was brilliant. Mum had

made it diffi cult for her at times and there

were weeks at a time I didn’t see her. She

came by the school to see me and give me

a fi ver for things I needed. Granny talked

to me about taking my periods and about

boys, but I was embarrassed. I suppose

all teenagers are.

When I was 14 I was introduced to the

Youth Health Service at the Closeburn

Street offi ce of NW Community Addiction

Team. My pal had gone along the week

before with a Youth Club and she had

loved it. There was staff there from lots of

different places such as Young People’s

Alcohol and Drug Services, Youth Workers,

Doctors and Health Improvement

Workers.

I found out lots about my mum’s drug

problem and talked to someone about my

fears and what kind of support could help

me in the future.

I’m determined to have a good

future. I’ve been linked with

staff from Jobs & Business

Employability Services and

the workers there are keen to

support young people affected

by drugs and alcohol to get the

best possible chances in life.

Page 20: Young Glasgow Magazine

I feel that although my mum is still on Methadone she is much better.

She has an Addiction Worker who sees her regularly and encourages

her to get involved in positive activities. She wants to detox from Methadone

and become completely drug free. She has joined a Promoting Women’s

Recovery Group run by North West Recovery Communities where she’s

met some inspirational people there and her whole mood has changed.

We met up with BBC Radio Scotland presenter,

Clare English and asked her how she did it…

Did you always want to

work in broadcasting?

I had no game plan at school although I

loved English. I was confused about what

I could do and considered Art school but

ended up studying for a Media studies

degree. I don’t think that had much to do

with ending up in journalism.. it’s the fact

you study for three years and prove you

can argue a case, learn facts and then pull

them out of your brain when you need to

that’s important. So, studying ANYTHING

is a good idea. It’s also down to your

personality. Can you persuade people to

open up and talk to you?

What subjects did

you study at school?

English, French, History and Art at Higher

level, my O-grades featured some sciences.

I did have ambitions to be a vet at one

stage as I love animals and don’t mind a bit

of blood and gore. Who knows, I could have

been a fashion designer-vet but it didn’t

work out that way.

Don’t panic! You will fi nd your way

eventually by just following your

nose and doing things that excite

you and hold your attention.

We met up with BBC Radio Scotland presenter,

Clare English and asked her how she did it…

How did you get

started in media?

By a lucky accident. Some people on my

media studies course were working for

Radio Clyde’s community action wing,

CLYDE ACTION. I went for a chat and they

said I could start immediately. After a few

weeks they decided I could take on some

press roles and during that time a news

room reporter said he thought I should

be a news trainee. His boss contacted me

that week and after an informal interview

I started on Monday and that was that!

After a couple of years I joined the BBC

and got the chance to broadcast on air for

a new radio show for young people. A guy

called Armando Iannucci worked with me

on that and he’s gone global with his series

ALAN PARTRIDGE and THE THICK OF IT, so

it goes to show, start out modest and you

can end up doing amazing things.

Can you give any advice

to young people looking

for a career in television

broadcasting?

Be fl exible and be realistic. It looks very

glamorous and highly paid and it can be.

Most people I work with love talking to

people, fi nding out more about their lives

or achievements. It’s a very competitive

career now so if you are keen, get as

much experience before you even go to

college or uni; write articles, make little

digital fi lms, basically, tell stories and

practice interviewing people. If you go

to college or uni, get involved in their

student newspapers/ TV/ radio/ fi lm

making groups. Good luck and go for it.

Don’t panic! You will fi nd your way

eventually by just following your

nose and doing things that excite

you and hold your attention.

There are thousands of CVs

handed in to potential employers

every year so yours has to pop out

and scream “I really want to do this!”

Celebrating Martyn Bennett, the

groundbreaking musician who burst

onto the traditional Scottish music scene

giving it a new lease of life by combining

the usual sounds with the drum and beats

of 90s dance music. His composition

‘Mackay’s Memoirs’ was played at the

opening of the Scottish Parliament in 1999.

Unfortunately Bennett was diagnosed with

Hodgkin’s Lymphoma which eventually

took his life in 2005.

The performance takes its name from

Bennett’s latest album, Grit which will be

a celebration of his life and music and

feature some of Canada’s finest circus

artists who will both work alongside

an ensemble of Scotland’s dance and

aerial artists, actors, live folk singers,

and classical musicians, whilst of course

featuring Martyn’s groundbreaking

dance music in its original form.
