YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE

Your partnership with Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute has made, and continues to make, a significant impact on Hoag patients and their families touched by cardiovascular disease. Because you took action, we had the resources to implement innovative technological advances, expand our support programs, provide education

and training to our nurses and staff, and maintain the level of excellence we strive for each day. Simply put, our patients have better experiences because of you.

Thanks to donor support, the Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute is the top-rated heart program in Orange County and it continues to break ground in every area of cardiovascular care. Recognized on a national level for many of its centers, its renowned surgeons, cardiologists and electrophysiologists consistently provide clinical outcomes that exceed national averages.

With its own entrance on the south side of the Hoag Hospital Newport Beach campus, the original “main” entrance to Hoag, Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute brings together the latest technological advances in cardiovascular patient care under one roof. This vital community asset is a culmination of the combined vision of Hoag and our philanthropic partners to provide Orange County with world-class cardiovascular care.

THE LIVES YOU’VE TOUCHED

Honoring the Individual

The hardest part about Wesley Phillips’ open-heart surgery to repair his mitral valve was getting him to accept that he needed it. A visit to his cardiologist revealed that his previously diagnosed mitral valve prolapse had progressed. Wesley was referred to cardiovascular surgeon Aidan Raney, M.D., James & Pamela Muzzy Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Surgery.

Then he did nothing. “I couldn’t get my head around it. I was healthy. I didn’t have any symptoms – well, I didn’t realize at the time that I actually did have symptoms. I didn’t like the idea of them telling me I had to get surgery,” shares Wesley, an active 57-year-old hiker and runner.

It took follow-up meetings with Dr. Raney before Wesley conceded that he needed to schedule a surgery. What impressed him was the way Dr. Raney and the Hoag staff seemed to understand how emotionally difficult and intellectually confronting the situation was for him.

“ They paid attention and understood that I was a human being with my own foibles, and they honored that,” says Wesley. “They understood how to be with me as I processed my situation, and they made me comfortable. The day I went in for surgery, I was completely at ease.”

After a few weeks, Wesley was able to return to hiking. Within months of his surgery, he hiked Mt. Lassen, ran a 5-K and completed a 53-mile backpacking trip. This past summer he headed out on a 72-mile backpacking trip across the Sierras.

FUNDING EXCELLENCE

Endowed chairs allow Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute (CHVI) chair holders to use the annual interest as a discretionary budget to fund staff, programs, equipment and special projects that otherwise would not be possible:

Joel Manchester Distinguished Lecture Series, featuring renowned clinicians lecturing on important and timely topics, was made possible by endowed chair funds. For example, Steven E. Nissen, M.D., M.A.C.C., Chairman of the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Cleveland Clinic, recently presented his lecture, Influence of Pharmaceautical Industry on Current Medical Practice, for Hoag physicians at The Island Hotel in Newport Beach.

The Annual Advanced Echo Conference features presentations on the most up-to-date advances in echocardiography. Participants receive a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art applications of echocardiography in valvular heart disease, prosthetic valves and aortic disorders.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPSEdwards Lifesciences partnered with CHVI once again by providing a grant to fund targeted valve screenings for the community through telemedicine. As has been the case for the many years of this partnership, the screenings identified several patients who were not aware that they had valvular disease.

DONORS HELPED HOAG RAISE THE BAR

As a direct result of extraordinary philanthropy, Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute (CHVI) houses an unusually comprehensive array of facilities that are rarely found in one location:

Featured Highlights:

The Allan & Sandy Fainbarg Electrophysiology Cath Lab Suite Since its opening in May of 2012, CHVI physicians have used the advanced technology in the Fainbarg Lab for more than 1,300 cases. Hailed as the most advanced electrophysiology (EP) lab in the country by Loma Linda University faculty and clinicians, the Fainbarg lab is a clinical site for the University’s electrophysiology program (an AS degree program). Staff from several regional hospitals have visited the Fainbarg Lab and see Hoag as a model for creating their facilities. The Fainbarg Lab has allowed CHVI physicians to implement the latest new procedures and is instrumental in assisting CHVI in its strategy to become a nationally-recognized arrhythmia program.

Bob & Marjie Bennett Hybrid Cardiovascular Operating Room A frequent site for visitors world-wide, the Bennett Hybrid CVOR recently hosted a delegation from Japan. The Japanese visitors, Infection Preventionist nurses and Infectious Disease physicians were interested in observing the interventions Hoag has implemented to combat health care acquired infections including the advanced air filtration system and other design elements.

Recent new technology

Philanthropy has funded new procurements including:

• Five catheterization labs, including the Allan & Sandy Fainbarg Electrophysiology Cath Lab Suite

• Three cardiovascular operating rooms, including the Bob & Marjie Bennett Hybrid Cardiovascular Operating Room

• Nancy & Bill Thompson Center for Cardiovascular Care which houses the Nancy & Bill Thompson Heart Valve Center

• Crispin Advanced Cardiovascular Center

• Ronnie & Byron Allumbaugh Conference Center

• 14-bed pre- and post-operating recovery room

• 13-bed pre- and post-catheterization lab procedure unit

• Specialized cardiac clinics

• Pacemaker and arrhythmia education and monitoring programs

The Ronnie & Byron Allumbaugh Conference Center is used daily for important meetings and conferences. For example, cardiac surgeons use the Allumbaugh Conference Center several times a week to strategize on cases and hold medical group meetings. Cardiologists and interventional radiologists use it for a bi-weekly endovascular

conference and CHOC physicians use it for a quarterly conference. Hoag nurses use it for a monthly nursing meeting that gets video conferenced to Irvine. It’s also frequently used by CHVI surgeons to stream live feeds from the Bennett Hybrid CVOR to teach best practices to physicians from around the U.S. and the world.

ALL UNDER ONE ROOFPhase II of the Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute (CHVI) construction is underway and includes the completion of the Nancy & Bill Thompson Center for Cardiovascular Care which consolidates many important services under one roof: Nancy & Bill Thompson Heart Valve Center, Congestive Heart Failure Management Clinic, Arrhythmia Clinic and non-invasive services such echocardiography and stress testing.

Once Phase II construction is complete, the entire CHVI will be operating in a combined space for the first time in Hoag’s 60-plus-year history. This will allow more efficiency from a cost excellence standpoint and much more convenience for our patients. The construction process is due to be completed in March of 2015.
