1he Power of §od CJ A ) HEN Jesus said: "All power has beeri given unto me

Jl V in heaven and in earth," He laid -claim to something

so vast that mere man hardly understands how to talk about

it. Of His power in heaven we grasp very little. His power

in earth is in some respects not unfamiliar to us even though

we may not understand it.

In what terms of our language can we discuss the power that

formed the earth, the sun and the moon, the myriad of stars . ·

and plan·ets that glitter in the sky? Or who can properly

give expression to the ppwer that upholds and keeps in order

the vast machinery of the universe? Human language has no

adequate terins.

In the spiritual realm, however, God Himself has taught us

how to speak of His power. Most important to all of us is

"the power of God unto salvation.'' We can neither describe

nor define that power. Unable to follow the method of its

operation, we nevertheless know the means through which

it works, namely, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, for that is the

very power of God unto salvation to every one who believes.

Whoever hears or reads that Gospel with an open mind and

with a humble, willing heart shall experience in his own life

the . power of God.

Prayer: 0 Lord create in our hearts not a "spirit of fear; but

of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." "Ascribe power unto God! Over Israel is His majesty, And His power is in the clouds" . (Poalm 68:34)

THE late Bishop Samuel ~allows returned to his home one mght, a few

years before his death, complet.ely cliscomaged. The meeting wnh h1~ boar? had been a stormy one in wh1ch. lns laymen vetoed one after another of hts favorite projects. Not only so, but e\·en some harsh things were said to the kindly man who had giYen so prodigalJy of his life and strength to the Church.

As the aging churchman entered his house, letting himself in with the night key, he was met by Mrs. F~llows.' ·who somehow sensed the situation w1thout having it described to her. Then,_ contral)' to all his custom, the b1shop gently refused his usual_ cup of h~t milk, and \\·ent almost duectly to lm room, there to roll and toss for an hour or more before sleep came with blessed Telief.

Suffering with her husband, lVlrs. Fallows lil~ewisc found it difficult to sleep, and very early the next morning she crept out of bed, made herself ready, and tiptoed down to her husband's room. She had expected to tu<>e him to stay in bed a little longer, 011° the promise that she would bring his breakfast up to him. Imagine her surprise. therefore, when she heard him pulling at the weights of ~is ~ncient exercise machine, and smgmg the ·while:

Come Thou. Fo·u11t of every Hessing, Twt~ m.y lwmi: to sir tg thy praise.

"Why, Samuel!" the good woman ex, claimed, in surprise.

"\Vhy \\·hat?" he queried in reply, witbotlt missing a beat in the rhythm of his morning exercise.

"\Vhy. that board meeting last night. I thmwht you would stay in bed this morni;"'g, a·ncl try, at least, to get a bit of rest."

"That board meeting?" he asked, coming to a halt. "\'Vhat about it?"

WHAT DO YOU FEAR? I SUSPECT THAT EVEN BRAVEST HAS SOME FEAR. IN CHILDHOOD WE LISTEN WITH PALPI-TATINU HEART TO SOME INNOCENT NOISE AND TAKE IT FOR A BURGLAR. .. "Living Above Worry"

'·Be not anxious," said J esus. Fear may be a wholeso.'ne stimulus, but worry unnerves the hand. Concern is active in driving the wheels of life, but worry is confusion inside. How

. can we live in that efficiency that is above worry?

Come to Terms with Self and God

A car whose motor's explosions are timed wrongly will heat up to the boiling point and lose most of its power, because it is fighting itself inside. Is your anx iety arising because you are striving against yourself or the God who speaks within? In counseling against anxiety, Jesus pointed out that we cannot serve two masters but should give the most important things first place. Then the rest can come into position. Stanley Jones says, "Remember that the basis ·of most resen tments is a touchy, unsurrendered self." The same may be true of anxieties and worries. We need to face ourselves in our inner motives and "come clean." There may be tensions left then within, that will drive us, but they may be accepted and recognized, organized and directed. We may be at peace within ourselves like a motor that drives but does not knock. "What's biting you?"

Live in Day-Tight Compartments

Dale Carnegie's new book, "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living," while it does not say much about fundamental readjustments of the inner purposes, is full of practical suggestions to help us deal with needless worries. He quotes Sir William Osler as counseling young men to live in day-tight compartments, as a ship may be made safe by water-tight compartments, closed off, under control of the captain on the bridge. We should plan for tomorrow, yes, but the best prepar<ltion for tomorrow is to do today's work well now, living one day at a time. Jesus said we should remember that tomorrow will have concern for itself. God will still be help ing and tomorrow will bring its own strength and insight. "Give us this day our daily bread." Keep fresh,

..

like d<1ted bread! ''Every day is a new life to a wise man."

Lord , for tomorrow and its needs I do not pray;

Still keep me, gu ide me. love m0 . Lord.

Through each today.

Face the Worst and 1\'Iake the Best

Mr. Carnegie tells of the method of Willis H. Carrier in dealing with worry_ First, figure out what is the worst that could possibly happen in the field of that worry . Second, reconcile yourself to accepting that, if necessary. Third, devote all your energy then to trying to improve that worst w hich has all'eady been accepted mentally. Then one is free to think. You see, worrying is not thinking. It is fuming. But by this method new energy may be released for definite planning and action.

Paul had this secret in his religion. His ambitions and self-seeking and sensuality were crucified, he said, with Christ. He had accepted the worst that cculd happen, and now lived in Christ. "Hencefortq let no man trouble me; I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus." He knew then how to be abased or to a bound. He h ad power. "I am able for anything through Jesus Christ. " F ace the worst, accept it, and then be free to improve upon it.

Fill Your Life with Love

He who gets down inio the problems of others and their everyday struggles may Jose the ab~orption with self that creates worry . "Perfect love casts out fear ." A life filled with the love uf God and the service of men does not have room for worry. Jt is satisfied

The other day I found workmen at the organ of Trinity Church. They had the console open, with its myriads of tiny wires in intricate organization in Fmall 'Dace, controlling thousands of pipes, large and small, and all the power of the organ. May we give God and God's Jove open entry to the command of our liv-;,s, to bring order at the center. so that we may be organized for effective and harmonious living .
