SAVE-UK was registered in 1994 by the members of the Indian Diaspora settled in the UK as a non political, non religious, voluntary, charitable organisation with the sole purpose of working amongst the poor, particularly those living below the poverty line, initially in India but ultimately in all the South Asian countries of the SAARC group and in Myanmar.

SAVE works with local grass-root non-political and non-religious charitable organisations for the poor in the above countries to:• IMPROVE Education and health• PROMOTE Mother and child care, Nutrition and Sanitation• ENHANCE Women’s rights and empowerment• DEVELOP Skills for income generation• RAISE Awareness on environmental and social issues

www.save-uk.org

SAVE UK and SAVE INDIA choose their partner NGOs after undertaking ‘Due Diligence’. This involves looking at the organisation’s legitimacy (Registration) and credibility, their Annual Reports and Audited Annual Accounts, names of their past and current donors and finally meeting all the stakeholders, including the grass root beneficiaries. The projects are designed in collaboration with the local NGOs and beneficiaries. We monitor our funded projects with the help of SAVE India and our appointed monitors. SAVE-UK now has 23 years experience in working with the voluntary sectors in India.

HOW WE CHOOSE OUR PARTNERS

SAVE-INDIA was registered in India in 2009 as an independent fraternal partner with the same aims and objectives as of SAVE UK. At present it raises funds in India for all its projects designed in collaboration with local NGOs and beneficiaries. It monitors both its own projects and those of SAVE-UK. It works as an arching and enabling organisation helping to promote improved governance, transparency, accountability and fundraising of local partner organisations.

Gyan Niketan: Inter College Women’s Association (ICWA) - Patna

SAVE has been supporting the ICWA to run primary education centres for slum children in Patna, since 2006. Some of the students have now graduated and are working in different parts of India.“We need to do something for the women and girls in Bihar,” protested Dr Sister M. Carol AC way back in 1987, when the murder of two University women by their husbands came to light.

Protest against this incident forced the police to reopen the murder cases, which had been closed earlier claiming that these were suicide cases. After re-investigation justice was delivered.

From this campaign sprang the Inter College Women Association (ICWA) to work for the welfare of women and children living in slums.

ICWA at present is catering to more than 600 children.A major part of the above funding is raised in the UK by friends and family of Sister Carol.

EducationPuspamoyee Basu Vidyalaya - KolkataA small non-formal primary school for 35 street children run by a group of dedicated middle class ladies of Kolkata. SAVE provides funding for the mid-day meal as this is not provided by the government to non-formal schools.

Swa Samriddhi – KolkataThe ever expanding urbanisation of Salt Lake, Rajarhat and areas around Metropolitan Bypass, Kolkata, bring a huge number of domestic helps from the slums and villages in and around these areas. These mothers have to leave behind their small children at home without adequate supervision. Mrs Sabitri Bose, a retired school headmistress has established several crèches under the banner of Swa Samriddhi for these children. After waging a lone war for a decade, she not only maintains

the creches, but has also expanded and now runs a number of nursery schools. Both SAVE UK and SAVE India have been supporting her for more than seven years and recently the Bengali Association of Indiana, USA, has decided to join us by donating new

dresses during the festive season.

Pratibondhee Shangha (PBS) - West Bengal

“Empowerment and community based rehabilitation of persons with disabilities through capacity building and income generating activities”

SAVE UK secured £10,000 per year for three years for this income generating project for physically and mentaly challenged adults from the Bairdwatson Trust of Scotland. Pratibondhee Shangha (PBS), is an association of disabled people, established in 1981.

It provided the training in tailoring, bag making, mobile repairing, computer basics, vermi composting and marketing skills. In its final year there were 80 direct beneficiaries, and 130 indirect beneficiaries. 31 participants were interviewed and they showed increased confidence, skills and ability to negotiate, to start their own enterprise and work in groups. They are also now more aware of the various government schemes for mobility appliances, income generation and health facilities.

The income for those trained in mobile repairs varied between 2000 and 5000 Rupees per month. Those trained in computer work averaged between 2500 and 4500, for tailoring the sums are 1500 to 2000 and bag making 1200 to 1500.Such was the success of the last project that BairdWatson Trust has agreed to part fund a further three year project for income generation. SAVE UK decided to provide the rest of the funding needed to ensure the success of the work.

£10 per month from 20 doners will ensure the continuation of such projects.

Calcutta Social Project (CSP)In 2005 SAVE-UK, established, with financial support from the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland, a Vocational Training School in Ballygunge, Kolkata in collaboration with CSP. At present it is running a very successful computer training programme for poor students, many of them living in slums.

We have also been supporting CSP’s vocational training programmes in sewing and embroidery for young illiterate mothers living in slums in South Kolkata. So successful has the training been that contracts have been received to supply bed linen to a number of private hospitals in Kolkata.

Since 2000 SAVE has been behind many of the major Projects of CSP, as one of the principal donors.

Association for Social Health in India (ASHI), KolkataViolence against women is widespread, particularly related to the dowry system in India. Early marriage, female foeticide, lifelong economic

dependance of women, all are related to dowry system. ASHI has six short-stay homes to give shelter to abused young women who had to leave their homes. SAVE UK has been funding ASHI for almost 20 years supporting 6 to 10 young women each year training them as auxiliary nurses, p h y s i o t h e r a p i s t s , ECG and laboratory technicians, depending

on capabilities, helping them to settle back again in the society. SAVE UK also funds ASHI’s beautician training, sewing and embroidery projects. From this year SAVE India is planning to start a computer training programme in ASHI.

In January 2014, on one of Save India’s field visits to the villages of Bakreswar a young boy came with his father - his name is Bapan Ghosh, an academically brilliant student of class 9. He is from a family of a daily wage earner, Madhusudan, and his home-maker wife Malati. He has an elder

sister, Tara.

Save India decided to run a student sponsorship program and from this Bapan was provided financial aid for his education. Save India were lucky to have donors who volunteered to support

him. Bapan passed Madhyamik examinations with flying colours and enrolled himself in Higher Secondary in the Tantipara High School, the only institute in the area. He started travelling 23kms twice weekly for chemistry tuitions as the school lacked a chemistry teacher. Our advisors, Prof. Gargi Das and her senior colleague Prof. Subhabrata Ray of Kharagpur IIT started mentoring him, they visited his school several times, enquired about his education and personally prepared him for his examinations. In 2015, Madhusudhan, in spite of living in extreme poverty, sold his cattle, took loans and sent his daughter Tara Ghosh to the National Medical College Kolkata to study nursing. Save India provide her with an interest free education loan for her entire course. Representatives of Save India visited her college several times and found that she is maintaining very high academic standards. Bapan is progressing well and has taken admission in Electrical Engineering in University Institute of Technology, Burdwan.

We need more funding to support many similar cases.£20 per month by standing order to SAVE is adequate to support one

deserving candidate like Bapan.

Mamoni Das was born in an impoverished family, and lived in the district of 24 Parganas in India’s West Bengal region, not far from the metropolis of Kolkata (Calcutta). She was brought up by her grandmother as her own family was unwilling to spend money on her education because she was a girl - her brother’s education on the other hand was taken care of by her father. Mamoni’s grandmother lived near Kolkata and worked as a cleaner for ‘Calcutta Social Project’ (CSP) based in the city.

Her grandmother asked CSP to take responsibility for Mamoni’s primary school education.

Mamoni finished at primary school, then she pursued her secondary school education, for which ‘Calcutta Social Project’ paid all expenses. Then she successfully underwent vocational training at CSP’s Girls’ Craft Centre. Lastly, she was sponsored to attend a diploma course in sewing and embroidery which she took in her usual stride and completed.

She now has a good job at Dashabhuja Boutique, where she mainly works making orhna (long scarves), as well as embroidering saris. Some of these products are now exported by the organisation she works for. She has become an expert in both machine work and embroidery work and presently she earns around 3500 rupees per month, giving her substantial economic independence and choices about her own future that she might not have otherwise had.

SAVE-UK has been helping to fund Calcutta Social Project’s primary education and vocational training projects for over fifteen years.

NEPAL

‘Welcome To My Yard’ (WTMY) an NGO established by an Australian couple in Kathmandu, provides practical and vocational training support to more than 300 children and young people, who are homeless or on the verge of being homeless. WTMY works to a holistic model offering intervention to vulnerable children and young people.

Utilising a strong community partnership approach WTMY has been able to offer a diverse range of services and vocational training opportunities within small and growing, not-for-profit business projects. SAVE has identified WTMY as a local partner organisation and has secured funding (£6,000 per year for three years) from the Bairdwatson Trust of Scotland for a small project which will provide a tailoring programme for homeless young women or those who are at risk of homelessness. Both basic and advanced training are provided in Kathmandu by WTMY. The young women enrolled in the courses are supported not only in aquiring vocational skills but also receive continuing emotional support. They will also receive career development until they are settled.

SUKANYA - Bakreswar, Birbhum, West BengalSAVE India believe that empowerment of women should essentially be self initiated and linked with financial independence. In the Bakreswar region Save India met with women of several villages who were eager to get an opportunity to earn. There was, however, a serious lack of awareness on hygiene. A discussion was held with Dr. Ajay Basu, chairman of the Society for Rural Industrialization (SRI) Ranchi and a visit was then organised to SRI where several training options were considered. In the next 6 months SAVE India held awareness sessions with the village women covering menstrual hygiene as well as methods of creating an enterprise which would address this issue.Following discussions ‘SUKANYA’ was formed, comprising of 10 women, both tribals and non-tribals. In collaboration with SRI, training was provided on setting up production of sanitary napkins. Soft loans were arranged for the group and equipment was ordered and a place was provided in the village resource center for the machinery. In July 2017 the machine was installed and trial process begun. The hope and excitement among the group is tangible. For the first time in their lives, these village women will start working in their own unit. There was a look of disbelief among a few cynics, who never thought this would be possible. The above unit including machine and training cost only IRs 150,000. 10 people donating £15 per month is enough to replicate the project in a wider area.

Santi Tuberculosis Centre,Pailan, W. Bengal

SAVE UK has donated funds to build 20 low cost latrines conforming to UNICEF design, thus helping to reduce water-borne infection amongst children in the villages.SAVE UK started building toilets six years before ‘Swatch Bharat’ movement started by the government of India.
