You are welcome Here We are a new parish, established in August of 2017, comprised of St. James and Immaculate Conception churches. We work together to invite all people to a deeper relationship with Jesus through our liturgies and opportunities to learn and to serve one another.

We are now in Ordinary Time and have lots to consider as we continue the regular work of Church after celebrating the four major seasons of Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter. We pick up at week 11 of Ordinary Time after remembering the central mysteries of our faith during these special season of the church. It is now time to put into practice all that we have remembered and learned of our faith, and to continue on the road to becoming good disciples of Jesus Christ. The ordinary work of the pastoral team (Fr. Murray, Margo Morin, Steve Angelucci and Andrea Sevigny) included taking a day away together last week to reflect on the past nine months since my arrival. It has been a bit of a whirlwind with some of the repairs and projects, but most importantly, as a staff we have a sense that we

are moving in the right direction ― trying to call people to Discipleship in Jesus Christ, encouraging more people to participate in the life of the church and working to become a welcoming parish for new people while we continue to strengthen the faith lives of those who are here. In our looking back, we were able to see where we could improve and how we can work together better as a team to engage more parishioners in present and future ministries. We also took time to look at the entire liturgical and calendar year to get a sense of what is coming (including what we already know about Christmas and Easter, how we will celebrate them locally), how best to prepare, and how we might again engage more people in the life of the church. I hope that this will be the ordinary practice of the church for a long time to come. We are a church as that as the fathers of Vatican II said, “…. is always holy and always in need of conversion…(Lumen Gentium).” Our local conversion has initially been characterized by more transparency about all the administration and finances of the parish, and the need of repair for the buildings. It is also been characterized, I hope, by paying attention to how we pray together and educate ourselves for the task of making more disciples. There are a few important steps to achieving this that we are working on now that I want to mention. One is the Alpha program, which is helping many people to come to a deeper relationship in Jesus Christ. The leaders and participants of this program are everywhere in this parish and are taking their place among the longtime parishioners. This is something to celebrate every Sunday. The second is a small prayer practice we have on Tuesdays. The devotion to St. Anthony is prayed every Tues-day after Mass. We have moved to praying specifically for the unchurched every week and as we do this, I ask people to think of someone specific in their family. Another good practice we have is the idea of greeting one another as Mass begins and the wonderful tradition of prayer partners at the 6:30 PM Mass. All these little things and some of the big work will result in a great parish. This is what I hope will be the ordinary thing we say: “We have a great parish, rooted in the Eucharist and making disciples of Jesus Christ and sending them in to the world to carry His message.” Peace, Father Murray Building News. At Immaculate we have completed the project of the walkway from the parking lot to the back entrance of the church. We will have the soil around the walkway filled in so that it is even with the surrounding land. We also are in the process of upgrading the air conditioning in the hall at St. James and installing air conditioning for the offices. The air conditioners will also have heating elements in them so that we can save a little by not using the boiler in October and March/April. Thanks to Shaun Shea and the folks at Hotel Salem for their contribution of $3,600.00 for this project. It is a little more expensive than we were expecting, but on the other hand will be much more effective and efficient.

If you have a bunch of friends who would be interested in gathering regularly to talk about faith, Beta Groups are for you! AND/OR, if you’ve done Alpha and came away thinking how much you’d love to keep meeting with a small group about faith, Beta Groups are for you too! Starting in May 2018, MQOA parish invites you to gather or join a bunch of good people (at a location you choose, and at a time that suits your schedule) to EAT, READ, PRAY, and GO.

share a meal together ― all good things start with food! use our prepared curriculum to read the coming Sunday’s Gospel and discuss what you read. Our printable guides will walk you through the steps (in a process similar to Lectio Divina) and help spark conversation, and will provide background and theological information to help your group learn.

pray for each other every time you meet. head back out into the world a little more inspired, a little more knowledgeable about your faith, and a little more connected with people in your life and our parish.

WOAH THIS SOUNDS AWESOME! HOW DO I START? Invite your friends to join you in a Beta Group. Choose a time and place to meet, and make a plan for food (you could meet at a restaurant, or go potluck at a group member’s home, or reserve space at one of our churches and have food delivered...or any combination of those!).

Register your group on our website, or click the link there to let us know you’re looking for a group to join. We’ll match you with an awesome group of people to

meet with! Do it NOW at www.salemcatholiccommunity.org/betas

We’ll sign you up for weekly emails with your Beta Group lessons. You can start right away!
