The standard that specializes inevery task

From commercial highrises to offshore plat-forms, the world turns to one design—theYORK “M” multistage centrifugal compres-sor—for reliable air-conditioning, gas com-pression, and refrigeration.

That’s because the “M” compressor’s keyfeature is versatility. Versatility for coolingoffice buildings and institutional campuses.Versatility for compression of process gases, hydrocarbons, and CO2 in onshore and off-shore installations. Versatility for refrigeratingchemicals and pharmaceuticals in processing, packing, and storage facilities.

This versatility has made the “M” compres-sor the ideal choice to meet the demandingrequirements of more than 3,000 installationsaround the world.

Choices that meet critical needsCompact “M” compressors are easily tai-

lored to fit individual applications, thanks to awide range of available compressor sizes, materials and components.

Heavy-duty compressors in four basic cas-ing diameters with one to eight stages ofcompression, provide up to 26,000 inlet CFMand outputs of up to 15,000 gas HP.

Many options are available to address spe-cific situations, such as special pressure, horsepower, gas, or speed requirements.

Rugged cast iron compressor casings arestandard, but nodular iron or cast steel forspecial applications and high pressures canbe specified. Impellers are fabricated ofbrazed aluminum, brazed anodized alu-minum, or electron-beam-welded stainlesssteel.

Drivers such as an electrically driven motor, gas engine, steam turbine, gas turbine andothers may be specified, as well as a controlsystem designed for your particular applica-tion.

Keep your refrigerant options open“M” compressors can be used with a wide

choice of refrigerants. Plus, the “M” compres-sor with its open-motor design gives yourefrigerant options for the future, because iteliminates refrigerant incompatibilitiesencountered with hermetic drives.

Versatility for the 21st CenturyYORK has responded to the CFC Phaseout

dictated by the U.S. Clean Air Act and theMontreal Protocol with re-engineering ser-vices for multistage customers. We canexplore several options, from a low cost rotorrestage using HFC-134a to engineering addi-tional staging or compressor re-sizing. YORKhas unmatched re-engineering experience, having completed hundreds of conversions, including new drivelines for competitive units.

1 YORKflex coupling –simple, lightweight design minimizestransmission of vibration. No lubrica-tion nor maintenance is needed

2 Quill-type drive shaft –flexible, alloy-steel, threaded-drive-shaft design provides access to theshaft seal and front journal bearing

without disturbing the main drivealignment. It torsionally isolates thecompressor from the driveline

3 Impellers – precision-machined, statically and dynamicallybalanced for efficient operation

4 Rotor – Balance checked as acomplete assembly to ensure minimalcentrifugal stress, temperature use,and long life

5 Journal bearings – reducedrotor shaft size and diameter minimizeboth bearing load and surface speedsfor extended bearing life

6 Thrust bearings – tilting-padthrust bearing is steel-backed-babbit-ted for added load carrying capacityand long life. The reverse thrust bear-ing is a hydrodynamic-film type

Build your reputation on oursYORK design expertise. YORK manufactur-

ing quality. YORK installation know-how.YORK operational support. They’re all reasonswhy so many customers count on YORK “M”compressors for continuous service day afterday, year after year.

Take, for example, the experience of OlinCorporation . The “M” compressors, pur-chased in 1972, were commissioned in 1973for continuous chemical process duty andhave never experienced an unscheduled shut-down. Conversion to R-134a was completedin 1995, with trouble-free service ever since.

This is just one of hundreds of compressorsin a rugged industrial environment that haveprovided continuous service year after year, decade after decade.

All “M” compressors are produced at theGrantley Plant located at YORK International’sworld headquarters in York, Pennsylvania. InNovember, 1994, the plant was registered asan ISO 9001 facility, showing YORK’s continu-ing commitment to world class quality.

Our worldwide service organization andfactory repair and replacement systemextends the superior benefits of the OriginalEquipment Manufacturer to wherever youare.

Minimal downtime and maintenance—by design

YORK designed the “M” compressor with aquill drive shaft, inboard bearings, and a special impeller mounting which allows theuse of small-diameter, lightweight aluminumjournal bearings and a mechanical shaft sealwith low surface forces and speeds for long,trouble-free life. The mechanical shaft seal hasproven reliable with air, refrigerant, or sourgases.

The maintenance-free, infinite life flexible-disc coupling requires no lubrication. All sealcomponents are readily accessible, becausethe flexible shaft and coupling design permiteasy access from the drive end of the com-pressor without removing the top half of thecasing.

When inside access is required, the top halfof the horizontally split casing lifts off to exposeall internal components without disturbing shaftalignment.

A force-feed positive lubrication systemextends compressor life by supplying oil priorto start-up, during operation, and coastdown.

Made for heavy industrial dutyA heavy-duty, industrial casing (cast iron,

nodular iron, or cast steel) provides a ruggedexterior, which can be completely assembledon a rigid structural steel base with optionalseismic mounts. Rotating components include:

Design-optimized energy usage foryour application

With a wide range of available stages andoptions, the “M” compressor is optimized toprovide outstanding energy savings. All themajor performance variables influencing cen-trifugal compressor performance are scruti-nized, such as gas flow rates, gas workingpressures/temperatures, gas composition andgas compression ratio. A rotor/diffuserarrangement is then selected to provide thebest combination of efficiency and flexibilityfor your operating conditions.

Pre-rotation vanes assure efficient full- andpart-load performance throughout compres-sor operation.Automatic con-trols rotate thevanes to theoptimum posi-tion to maintainthe desiredcapacity. Amanual controlcan also befurnished.

For thoseapplications where side loads or flash-gasloading is incorporated for maximum systemefficiency, the YORK “M” compressor isdesigned with side-load connections at anystage.

Make the most of your energyresources

The YORK “M” compressor can be pow-ered by many types of drives—includingsteam turbine, electric motor, gas engine, orgas turbine.

In applications where gas or waste-heatfrom a steam plant is available, the “M” com-pressor can be turbine-powered to offset thecost of electricity. Smooth capacity controlcan be maintained by automatic control ofpre-rotation vanes, as well as variation inspeed.

Compressor factory testingEvery “M” compressor is factory air-run

tested to ensure mechanical integrity beforeshipment. It’s just part of the total YORK pic-ture that includes proven product design andstate-of-the-art manufacturing. A wide rangeof tests are available, including performance, mechanical and API vibration.

Save with factory-assembled driveline

To cut installation costs, the compressorand driver can be completely assembled on arigid structural steel base. These componentsare rough-aligned and shallow-dowelled byYORK factory experts, then shipped as a sin-gle assembly. Only final alignment and dow-elling are needed after the field installation iscompleted. Coupling guards are provided inaccordance with OSHA standards.
