Today, the Israeli flag, or degel דגל is one of the most recognizable symbols of the State of Israel, but this wasn’t always the case! The design we’ve come to know and love came from several previous iterations which look nothing like it does now.

Even when the Jewish people were wandering in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt, each of the 12 tribes had their own decorative flag. Theodore Herzl’s original design for the flag of a modern State of Israel featured seven golden stars on a white background.

The blue and white kachol ve’lavan כחל ולבן of the flag represents the striping colours of a tallit or prayer shawl, while the 6-pointed star is the ancient Jewish symbol of the Magen David ,טלית.or Star of David. Some people say the blue represents the sky ,מגן דוד

We’re all used to the traditional flag, but this Yom Ha’Atzmaut, try your hand at making one of these fun versions! Don’t forget to share your best pictures!

If you were put in charge of designing the Israeli flag, what would it look like? What colours would you use? What symbols would be on it?

MOSAIC COLLAGE Use strips of blue and white paper cut from newspapers or magazines to make your own Israeli flag!

Materials: Old Newspapers or Magazines Scissors PVA / Glue Stick White Paper

FINGER PAINTING Sink your hands into it by painting in Israeli colours on a paper plate! You can then hang them to make a mobile or wall hanging!

Materials: Blue and White Paint White Paper String for Hanging

LOLLY STICK GARLANDS It’s easy to make the shape of a Magen David by making two triangles out of lolly sticks. First paint them blue, you can even decorate them with glitter! Once they’re dry, use white glue to form them into two triangles, and then glue the two triangles together. Once dry you can tie string around them to make a lovely hanging garland for your Yom Ha’Atzmaut BBQ!

HUMMUS ART Hummus may be one of Israel’s most famous dishes, but here it is like you’ve never had before. Make up a bowl of hummus, either homemade or from the store, and see what you can add to change the colour. Try paprika for red adom אדום, or turmeric for bright yellow tzahov צהוב. What do you think you could add to turn it blue kachol כחול?

See if you can draw designs with the hummus, or even make an Israeli flag by adding cut vegetables.

If you want to make your own hummus, try out this recipe:

Ingredients: Cooked/Canned Chickpeas Gargirei Hummus גרגירי חומוס Tahini Techina טחינה Lemon Limon לימון Garlic Shum שום Parsley Petrozilia פטרוסליה

Put all the ingredients in a blender, and blend thoroughly. You can even try adding other things, like cooked beets, or chillies!
