May is here, and April showers have indeed brought May flowers

along with its pollen counts. With every positive a little negative

can be tolerated. April was truly an outstanding month for B'nai

Zion. Shabbos, April 7, had us all on cloud nine. The chapel was

full as we celebrated with the Goff family on their joining the

chain of Jewish heritage. The process they went through is

probably the most meaningful any of us can imagine. It requires

study and commitment that we all recognize as exceptional. A

simple mazel tov does not go far enough. By the way, the special Kiddush was great

as well. We are proud to have the Goffs as part of the B'nai Zion family.

The Shabbos service on the 7th saw an out pouring of our kids participating in

the service. The hubbub was invigorating as we watched, and heard, their

participation. The vigor was almost overwhelming for this C.C.O.G. ( card carrying

old guy). The Ashrei Society issued certificates to Abe Lebovitz, Levi Lebovitz, Lily

Shire, Devin Kodsi, Jessica Kodsi, and Micah Hodes. We look forward to having

them lead us in Ashrei for a long time. They are our future!

The Men’s Club had their BLT on the following Sunday, and proceeded to

kasher the kitchen in anticipation of Passover. Joel Susman led the team of Joe

Kodsi, Al Jarman, Gary Lander, Jordan Parker (with Lilah), Murray Berger, David

Navas, Lester Votava, Rick and Lon Jacobs and Dr. Bill Hillner. This is an annual

project and much appreciated by all of us.

The first night of Passover was celebrated at homes all over the Chattanooga

area on Monday evening, April 14. On the evening of the 15th we had the largest

group ever at the Congregational Seder with a 150+ in attendance. One of the

things that made this Seder so special was the involvement of whole families. The

excitement at B'nai Zion was palpable. The service, led by Rabbi Tendler, was

enthusiastic, creative and most meaningful. Many folks participated in the service. I

would be remiss not to thank John Lewis and an anonymous donor for the new

Haggaddahs we used. We also need to give a big thank you to Mable, Alfie and the

temporary staff for the way the food was prepared and served, KUDOS to all.

Kashering the Kitchen

BZ Voice May 2014 3

Message from Our Rabbi by Rabbi Susan Tendler

At a recent meeting someone shared

the above quote that made me smile. I

have and have given away two of her books, Kitchen Table

Wisdom and My Grandfather’s Blessings. Both I have read

numerous times and marveled at the wisdom, profound insights

and affective vignettes that Dr. Remen shares through her Jewish

lens.

Dr. Remen remembers fondly her grandfather, an Orthodox

rabbi and yet she was raised by staunchly Socialist parents. That

said, I often wonder if her grandfather had not died when she

was so young or her parents had not been so determinedly

Socialist if kitchen table would not have been the Shabbat table.

For the Shabbat table provides a weekly invitation to share our

stories, share our wisdom (and learn it from others), share our

lives with one another.

Building community is paramount for all of us, for B’nai

Zion, and we need you to make it happen. Let me explain.

There has been an incredibly successful program initiated within

the Conservative Movement and greatly encouraged by United

Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ), called Guess who's coming to Shabbas?

It’s like a pyramid scheme but instead is a Shabbat dinner pyramid scheme.! The idea is that a handful of initial families

host two or more other members for Shabbat dinner and hope that the guests would then serve as hosts in the future and it

continues to grow from there. Ok, don’t stop reading here because it sounds too intimidating for any number of reasons.

Sure, part of the program is reaching out beyond our own comfort zones to include those who many not feel part of our

vibrant community but the prospect should not be too daunting at the same time. I get it; not everyone keeps kosher, lights

Shabbat candles, or even cooks. But still, I want to encourage you to give the program consideration as I believe its rewards can

be invaluable.

This is where the rules come in, essential elements to ensuring success:

#1 - No rules

Everyone does Shabbat differently. Lighting candles (if it’s before Shabbat), making Kiddush and saying Motzi is the bare

minimum, and we will provide all hosts with all the tools-- the blessings in English, Hebrew and transliteration, send audio files

with the brachot, as well as Shalom Aleichem and the blessing of the children for those who want to incorporate it. While we

strongly suggest dairy or parve to ensure everyone feels comfortable it doesn’t matter whether serving pizza poolside or a more

traditional meal at the dining room table, anything goes.

#2 - Thinking outside your comfort zone

When inviting, we ask hosts to think beyond their immediate circle and invite those they may not know well. Reciprocity is

not expected. Rather, we ask congregants to “pay it forward” by engaging new families and for hosts unsure of whom to invite,

we will happily play Shabbas matchmaker.

#3 - Photos

We ask hosts to take photos of their guests before Shabbat and send them in for posting on the synagogue Facebook page

to help spread the enthusiasm and relationship building outside of our building.

Whether we call it Guess Who’s Coming to Shabbes or Shabbat across Chattanooga, the idea is the same. Our tradition

offers tremendous wisdom in sitting together around the Shabbat dinner table., learning from one another, sharing, creating

not only community but family! To find out more, contact Jackie Rosenfeld, Amelia Allen, Marcia Menuskin, Jason Cathcart

or me; we would love to share more with you.

“Everybody is a story. When I was a child, people sat around kitchen tables and told their stories. We don't do

that so much anymore. Sitting around the table telling stories is not just a way of passing time. It is the way the

wisdom gets passed along. The stuff that helps us to live a life worth remembering.”

―Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen

Message from Our Director of Congregational Learning

Another excellent year at BSI!

Our school year at BSI this year has flown by. It has been

a whirlwind of Jewish learning, fun in the classroom and

memories for all. We had some wonderful new moments in

our school year this year and I would like to mention some of

them here as I thank a few people.

Thank you to our teaching staff: Seth Balser, David

Fairchild, Hadas Peled, Rachel Sadowitz , Rebecca Sadowitz

and Rabbi Tendler. I couldn’t ask for a more hard working

and caring group of educators. Each teacher helped to bring a

creative twist into the educational program that make us all so

proud. Thank you for you dedication.

Rob Cowan and our new Education committee has done

an excellent job of advocating for the youth of our

congregation. I am indepted to all of the members of the

committee. This group of people cares deeply about what and

how our children are learning at B’nai Zion. Thank you for

all that you do.

Thank you to our B'nai Zion office team: Deborah Wint,

Marcia Menuskin, Mable Willingham, Alfie Jones, Lester

Votava, Joyce Thomas and John Lewis. From the lights to the

heat, the computers to the food, the head to the heart: this is

a dedicated group of individuals that make up a fantastic

team. I am fortunate to work with you all and I truly

appreciate your help.

Our final thank you goes out to our students. Without

you, Beit Sefer Ivri would not be possible. I am proud of all

the learning you have done this year and look forward to

seeing you grow as members of the Jewish people.

I’m looking forward to seeing all our students, parents and

extended BSI family on May 14th for our End of the Year

Dinner and Program. It will be filled with food and fun!

You Never Know Who You’ll Meet At The Store! You Never Know Who You’ll Meet At The Store! You Never Know Who You’ll Meet At The Store! You Never Know Who You’ll Meet At The Store!

Rick Jacobs, Marty Fanburg, and John Lewis recently connected with Dr. Perry

Brickman, second from left, while on a shopping expedition in Atlanta this past

March. Dr. Brickman, who has Chattanooga roots, has a story of interest to B’nai

Zion and the wider Jewish community. He recently told the story at the Federation.

Perry Brickman was at the top of his class in High School at Chattanooga. He

maintained a B-plus in Biology as an undergrad student at Emory and earned early

admission to dental school. He enrolled in Dental School at Emory in Atlanta with

high expectations. He was devastated when he was notified that he had failing

grades, for he had never failed a class in his life. Over the next few months, he

discovered that three of his friends, also Jewish, had also been failed.

At the time, he swallowed his shame and enrolled instead at the University of

Tennessee School of Dentistry where he excelled. Sixty years later, Dr. Brickman has

helped see a belated justice done. In large part because of his personal research into

the anti-Semitic record of Emory's dental school which flunked 65 percent of its

Jewish students or forced them to repeat courses, Emory has finally admitted the bias

and has taken steps to overcome it. The university invited many Jewish former

students to a private meeting with its president, James W. Wagner, and that same

night it hosted the premiere of a documentary film about the scandal.

Because of Dr. Brickman’s persistence, and determination to see Emory admit

what they had done to Jewish students, they finally admitted they were very anti-

Semitic towards Jews. Dr. Brickman in his own way, opened doors for Students at

this esteemed learning institution.

It is very important to our

synagogue that everyone knows the

importance of RSVP.

The synagogue is not like your

neighborhood restaurant where they

plan for unreserved guests. We make

every effort to accommodate everyone

who wants to attend food-related

events at BZ, but we need your

cooperation so that we don’t run out

of food!

To sum it up if you want to join us

for the great meals, make a reservation.

Thanks in advance for the help.
