We live and work in a time when we are challenged to question everything we know. Our traditional ways that we lead, manage, teach, and view the world are insuffi-
cient to address the concerns we now face as individuals and as a global society. We seek to meet this challenge and provide people with greater access to their own talents and creativity.

Meet the Clean Air Council
56 YOGA LIVING Spring 2013
Yoga Theory | by Bob Butera, PhDHealthy Family
THE CLEAN AIR COUNCIL IS A MEMBER-SUPPORTED,nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to protectingeveryone's right to breathe clean air. The Council works
through public education, community advocacy, and governmentoversight to ensure enforcement of environmental laws.
The Council was founded in 1967 by a group of forward-lookingcommunity leaders, policy makers, and progressive businessleaders. Headquartered in Philadelphia, the Council made a namefor itself by the mid-1970s as the result of two major achievements:establishing and distributing a daily regional air quality index report(still used to this day); and forcing Pennsylvania to implementvehicle emissions testing program. The Council has now grownto include 7,000 members and expanded its programmaticfocus to include children’s environmental health, energy, climatechange, waste and recycling, and transportation.
Frack Attack: Decreasing Air Pollutionfrom Natural Gas DrillingSince 2008 the Council has been working toaddress the issue of increased air pollutionrelated to drilling for natural gas in Pennsylvania’sMarcellus Shale formation. Extracting andprocessing natural gas emits hundreds oftons of ozone precursors, greenhouse gases, and hazardous pollutants in rural anddownwind areas alike. The CAC holdsregulatory agencies, like the PA Departmentof Environmental Protection and the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency accountableand informs the public on air quality issueswith shale gas drilling and processing. Theiroutreach team supports communities goingthrough rapid industrial change, informingthem of their rights and to have input intowhat is going on in their communities. Thisoutreach consists of many in person meetings, townhalls, webinars, and one-on-one interactionto show people how they can stand fast against environmentalpollution where they live and work.
Young Lungs at Play: Protecting the Young, and Young atHeart, From Tobacco SmokeAnother priority of the Council is protecting the public from thehazards of tobacco smoke pollution. Clean Air Council has longbeen a leader educating the public about and advocating forsmoke-free initiatives. The Council was integral in advocating forsmoke-free legislation in the City of Philadelphia and for the stateof Pennsylvania. Tobacco smoke pollution is especially harmful toyoung children. The US Environmental Protection Agency estimatesthat secondhand smoke is responsible for between 150,000and 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections in infants and
Meet the Clean Air Councilchildren under 18 months of age annually, resulting in between7,500 and 15,000 hospitalizations each year. Tobacco smokepollution is harmful to children with asthma. The Council’s YoungLungs at Play program works with local governments andmunicipalities to make their parks and playgrounds smoke-free.To date, dozens of parks are now smoke free thanks to the workof Clean Air Council and its partners.
5K Run for Clean Air: The Region’s Largest Earth Day CelebrationThe Council hosts two annual events to raise funds for importantprogrammatic work, the 5K Run for Clean Air and Greenfest Philly.Located on the beautiful banks of the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, the 5K Run for Clean Air is a celebration of sustainable andhealthy neighborhoods, clean air, and improvements in the region’soverall environmental health. Over the past three decades, theRun has grown into Philadelphia’s largest Earth Day Celebration,
become a certified green event, and addeda 3K walk and Kids’ Fun Run, and muchmore. This year, YogaLife Institute will beleading the, always popular, pre-run yogastretch at the base of the Art Museum steps!
Clean Air Council has consistently striven tomake the Run one of the greenest events inthe Philadelphia region. In addition to standardpractices including recycling and compostingwaste, promoting use of public transit to getto the Run, providing paperless pre-registrationand a reusable race bag, all Run bibs aremade from seeded paper that can be plantedpost-race. The Run medals are crafted fromrecycled material and designed by a localartist. Finally, those who switch their energy to100% PA wind and solar run for free!
Greenfest Philly: It’s Easy Going GreenWith thousands of attendees, Clean AirCouncil’s Greenfest Philly has become one ofPhiladelphia’s most popular festivals. The
goal of Greenfest Philly is to educate the public about steps theycan take to be more sustainable in their daily lives, and to showthe public that “going green” is something that we all can do.The diverse exhibitors offer something for everyone - a kid’scorner with eco-friendly crafts and music, local organic food anddrinks, live music from popular local bands, electric vehicles, innovative green businesses and products, ways to take action, and more. Greenfest 2013 is scheduled for September 8, 2013at Headhouse Square in Center City Philadelphia.

DAKINI POWER: TWELVE EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN SHAPING THE TRANSMISSION OF TIBETANBUDDHISM IN THE WEST
by Michaela Haas
The women featured in Dakini Power are contemporary teachers of Tibetan Buddhism, (bothWesterners and Asians) who teach in the West. They followed their intuition against all odds, madedramatic and unusual decisions, and sometimes had to fight for their survival in order to lead the livesthey envisioned. All were criticized—for being too conservative or too rebellious, too feminist or notfeminist enough—yet they pulled through with immense determination and bravery. This new bookfrom Michaela Haas honors the accomplishments of these female pioneers, and offers readers theopportunity to meet them, hear their stories and be inspired by their lives in order to let go of old fearsand explore new paths.
