CCP DiNNer rePort

On Jan. 19th about a dozen community members at-tended the Comprehensive Community Planning (CCP) dinner at the Elders’ Centre.

Thanks to those of you that did come out, including Mary & Bird, Colleen Walkus, Carrol Ellingson, Gloria A. Walkus, Donna Williams, Alexis Williams, Bob & Cathy Swain, Stephanie Walkus, Charlotte Dubitski and Laura Joe.

elDers uPDateHello everyone!

I sure hope you all have had a good week-end. Here are a couple of very import-ant events we will be doing this week. Tomorrow we will have lunch @ I.V.’s Quarterdeck restaurant @ 11:30am! I was out of town last Wednesday so this is why I had to postpone this lunch until tomorrow.

Thursday, the 26th, we will be catering for roughly 120 people for dinner. I am going to need all the help I can get. This is for the Treaty dinner that will take place up at the hall and here is the menu: Elk Stew; Elk shephard’s pie; Elk meat-loaf; baked fish; potato salad; cole slaw and we need desserts made as well.

PLEASE come to the lunch meeting to-morrow and we will all figure the plans out for Thursday!

HousiNG uPDateFires – There have been a number of fires in our community which has effected our premiums signifi-cantly in the last five years! Our deductible has gone up and it is very costly for our band! If this contin-ues we will not be able to renew our fire insurance again, which will mean no coverage on any of the band units at all.

It is very important to keep your chimney pipes clean, no cooking while under the influence of alco-hol or anything that makes you sleepy while cook-ing, unplugging electrical appliance when they are not in use, and contacting the appropriate department in the office if you have any problems with regard to anything mentioned above. If you do not have a fire extinguisher or smoke de-tector in your unit please contact the housing office or Bob Swain or Les Taylor A.S.A.P. If your smoke detector is disconnected and cannot be reconnected please contact either of the above mentioned A.S.A.P.

DO NOT disconnect your smoke detectors! If these go off when you shower, turn on your bathroom fan and leave it on for at least 15 minutess after your shower, or when you’re cooking, use your stove top fan while your cooking and open a window about an inch! Fans are designed to suck up the steam.

Happy New Years everyone!

This semester promises to be action packed and excit-ing to for all of that are involved in planning.

Next month, we will be presenting a workshop to grade eights and if our presenters have time, we will present to the grade nines on sexual health, healthy relation-ships and building self-esteem.

The workshop would be set up in the same manner as a healing circle; each presenter will sit randomly throughout the circle of girls.

Presenters will speak from their individual perspec-tives, for examples an elder would speak on the per-sonal responsibilities of young women, a nurse would speak on sexual health … and so on.

I believe we will be screening National Geographic’s video “in the WOMB” will add dramatic visuals, as-sisting in teaching girls about pregnancy.

Each girl would have a bag placed on her chair with items like a journal, pen, water, pamphlets and possible other self-care products.

The diversity group is working on a project for Anti-Bullying Day, which is on February 29. We are having problems meeting after school, so we are planning a sleep over. I don’t have any details at this time, how-ever their ideas which are being discussed are creative and exciting.

These youth have talents, energy and leadership skills.

Thank you for your time and I hope everyone has a wonderful year.

PatieNt travelMany Thanks again to all for bringing in your Dr’s notes. The fax number is 949-6811. My direct line is 902-2278. Again remember if it does not say escort on that note you will not be covered for an escort.

And all travel is to be picked up down at Band Office. If you decide to make appt with dentist on your own and this is down Island you will not be covered for the appt. It has to be the closest place and that is in Alert Bay.I am still in need of reliable escorts for our Elder’s appts. I f you are interested please call me to my direct line 902-2278 or leave message with Christy. You also will need to have a good running vehicle. We do have a van but it is still not in order as of yet. We still waiting on a reliable driver for it.

I still have been getting a lot of texts and a lot of calls at home. And that is alright, because I do not mind us texting each other. All I wanted to say is if you are very ill you must call ambulance or ask someone to take you to the hospital right away, because I cannot help you. Also I have been getting a lot of calls for me to drive you to the hospital or to Doctor’s office I am not insured for driving clients to and from, in case there is an accident in my car, that’s one of the reasons I have been refusing people. I am not doing this to be mean by any means it’s just I’m not insured in my vehicle to take you from here to there.

I still have lots of overtime hours I still need to use but I will let you know when I’m off. I have been very, very busy doing travel. Once I have done it I cannot keep changing it. Once you have told me how you are going down I do it bring to Band Office. So sorry I just don’t have the time to keep changes the travel once it is done.Sorry again I cannot do travel for our people who live off reserve. At all. I have talked to Health Canada about this so many times and they keep tell me I can’t. Just writing this again, like always I try to do my best in all that I do to try and help everyone out.

We have had so many of our community members who are very ill, and this weather doesn’t help either. Please let me know as soon as possible how you are travelling down to your appointment/s. I’m trying to suggest to everyone to please take the bus, I know it takes forever to get to where you are going but you will get there safe-ly. For almost all travels I do I put to pick up day before your appt. If you are going on bus it usally 2 days before your appt. so you can bring PO to bus depot before your appt. Again it is your responsibility to cancel hotel res-ervations if you are not going to your appts. Most of the hotels are toll free so there is no charge to you.

I hope you all have a nice week. I certainly am going to try.

Sasamans Society News November/December, 2011 A wonderful response at KDC Annual Assembly

he Sasamans Society wrapped up 2011 with a positive response from the Kwakiutl District Council Annual Assembly on Dec. 8.

Members of the Tribal Council were in favour of having the Sasamans Society take over management of services and two more bands are aiming to join the society. Representatives from the Ministry of Children and Family Development, Wedlidi Speck, Chuck Eamer and Deborah Foxcroft

presented information to the Assembly about the Ministry's work and introduced a draft proposal for working with aboriginal organizations. They also publicly shared their support for the work the Sasamans Society is doing. "This acknowledgement of our work appears to have strengthened both our presentation and community support," said Sasamans Society Executive Director Pauline Janyst.

Community Engagement continues Extensive information gathering was completed in four communities - the We Wai Kai First Nation, Laichwiltach Family Life Society, Wachiay Friendship Centre and Dzawada'enuxw First Nation - during the last quarter of 2011. The completion of information gathering in the Quatsino First Nation was delayed due to weather and road closures, and is now scheduled to be complete in January. And Whelalau was scheduled for January. Conversations with young people, parents and Elders took place during information sessions, luncheons, family nights and pizza nights for youth. The use of surveys was introduced for people who were not interested or able to participate in dialogues or focus groups. Community-based collaborators and facilitators worked hard to meet the Nov. 30 deadline of gathering information in these first communities. All information collected will be used to help the team at the Sasamans Society in supporting the communities in creating their child and family wellness plan/model that supports the development of healthy families and keeps children out of government care.

Data analysis now under way Analysis of the information collected during visits to communities began in November. The analysis will include coding the transcripts from interviews, focus groups and dialogues, as well as a team review of the information, a draft report, a presentation to each community for their input, and much more. The Sasamans Society is hoping to complete reports for the Dzawada’enuwx First Nation, the Laichwiltach Family Life Society, the Wachiay Friendship Centre , and the We Wai Kai First Nation by the end of January.

Community approach change to gathering information

ommunity-based collaborators were an essential element for community engagement. The collaborators liaised within

the communities, they arranged events, made contact with individuals to arrange for focus groups and individual dialogues and kept the Sasamans Society informed about life within the community and the challenges First Nations families are facing. However due to funding issues and changes to staffing, the Sasamans Society changed its

approach to incorporate the communities' frontline workers in the community engagement process. That means some individuals who were once CBCs have become part of a facilitation team that goes into communities to collect information, with the assistance of a community frontline worker. There are many challenges to face due to unpredictability in weather and community scheduling, but the Sasamans Society is committed to finding solutions to operational challenges.

Sasamans Society values opinions of people formerly in government care The Sasamans Society is engaging young people and adults previously in government care in dialogue services are most needed for children presently in care. As well, they are seeking advice from these members of our communities in order to find out what kinds of things need to be in place in order to keep children out of care in the future. This conversation is also taking place with parents and Elders in our communities. The Sasamans

Society understands the importance of ensuring confidentiality and privacy for those participating in the dialogues, so a poster has been developed to draw the attention of those previously in care. As well, agencies working with youth in care, and their parents, will help the Society get in touch. If anyone is interested please call our toll free # 1-888-597-2189 and ask for Terry.

Importance of training as the Sasamans Society continues to reach out to communities Recently, two community-based collaborators, the Sasamans Society`s initiatives coordinator, the policy analyst and the program coordinator participated in the last segment of a three-part training important to the Society`s goal of increasing capacity to consult communities and develop initiatives. The training included: community outreach and recruitment, ethical guidelines and procedures, culturally-grounded facilitation and data collection methods, individual and group interviewing techniques, field and observation notes and analysis and evaluation of findings. Individuals who have been fully trained will be able to mentor other community members in these skills!

The Sasamans Society - Who We Are Sasamans is derived from the Kwak'wala language. It translates to “our children”, which reflects the society`s intention to honour and listen to our children`s voices, consequently the voices of our communities. The Sasamans Society has two roles in aboriginal communities: to focus on supporting our communities in identifying a service plan that meets their needs through an information gathering process, and to develop a strategic plan to introduce the concept of the management of aboriginal services to our communities and what it could look like. Over time this plan would phase out the Ministry of Child and Family Development`s role in the management of aboriginal services (NOT including delegated services, i.e. children in care) The Sasamans Society is charting new waters to provide First Nations and urban aboriginal organizations with the support necessary to shape their vision of a child and family wellness plan and to develop their respective cultural and traditional approaches to keep children out of care.
