Elders update:

Yo wiksas!

This month has been very busy. So busy I almost wish there were two of me! Could you imagine??

Here is what the Elder's Program looked like for the last little while:

We had Thanksgiving lunch with some of the Quatsno Elders. This was a nice get together for everyone.

We had about 25 Elders all together. Thank you so much to Tammy Hunt, Liz Cadwallader, Chelsey

Walkus & Richard George (helped with the turkey). These lovely people helped make this day happen. We

all pitched in and made a wonderful Thanksgiving meal for everyone to share.

The Elder`s Council has been meeting every Friday as per usual. Thank you to for your hard work and

commitment to your Elders! You are doing awesome.

As you all may already know, I drove granny Sarah & Richard down to Courtney for her cataracts

removed. We left Sunday Oct. 19 and returned Tuesday evening of Oct. 21. I must say she did very well

with the whole thing. From travelling to the procedure itself. We are all glad she was finally able to have

the procedure done as she had missed several attempts in the last year. i will be taking her back down

Tuesday Oct. 28 for a check up appointment and other matters. We will then return Wednesday Oct. 29.

Speaking of Oct. 29, there is a FNHA workshop in Fort Rupert that day. I am more than happy to bring

any Elders out to attend once I return home with granny Sarah. I will send a notice out when I know a

little more.

While I was away that Monday, I arranged for Chelsey & Liz to take charge of Elder's Fun Day. They did an

amazing job with the meal they had provided. It was a shame to see only 4 of our 50 some odd Elders show up.

What can we do to make you Elders be more involved? What do you like? What don't you like?

Page 6: Oct 24, 4014 yo news

PAGE 6 GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS 10/24/2014

This being asked, the Elder's Council will be forming a policy to where if you wish to participate in any sort of

field trips or Christmas activities, attendance will be mandatory. So just a heads up for all of you that haven't

been making any activities lately. So I hope to be seeing a lot more of you with in the next month.

The Quatsino Elders invited our Elders out to their community for lunch on Wed. Oct. 22. We only had 6 of our

Elders come and join us. Thank you to those of you that have continued to attend activities on a regular basis. If

it wasn't for you all, we would not have a program

Please come G&N Elders to our Halloween Party Oct. 31 starting @ 12pm with great food, games, costumes &

prizes! You get a little something extra if you make sure one of your Elder friends come too! The more the

merrier right! Quatsino Elders have been invited as well. This is going to be huge! Volunteers are most

welcome.

Well that's the Elder's Program update.... in a nutshell.

Have a great weekend!

Silena George, Elder`s Coordinator

Hey everyone!

I am not sure if you all have heard... but you know all those days you see me running? Well, it

turns out I am not only a runner, but a 1/2 marathoner! Yes I ran a 1/2 marathon, 21km, in

Victoria Thanksgiving weekend (Oct. 12/14) along with my friend, Ferrin Willie. We also had

Kaleb Child & Dianne Harris do the full marathon, which is 42km! Way to go everyone!

Weowwwwwww!

I have never ran 21km in my life. I had doubts about being ready and going. Thankfully my

running buddy pushed me to just go for it. I did and well.... I DID IT! I ran the entire course

without stopping in 2hrs & 19mins! 11mins faster than I had estimated! :D

Here are some photos

I would like to thank the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Elders for sponsoring me some gas to drive

all the way to Victoria! That was super generous of you guys!

I am pleased to announce I will be attending another run this Sunday Oct. 26 in Vancouver! I

have yet to register but i will be leaving tomorrow and will return Monday evening! Wish me

loads of luck.

Have a fantastic weekend everyone!

Silena

YO! JOB TRAINING AD

GIS Technician Training

Natural Resources Department

Band Office

Wage: $12/hr to start

Deadline to Apply: November 20th, 2014

Schedule: 35 hrs/week, one-year term (part-time hours may

be considered)

Description: Training will be provided on a one-on-one basis to an individual interested in learning Geographic

Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data management. We aim to mentor a Band member in building the skills

necessary to support staff in the Natural Resources office and elsewhere in spatial data management, map-making,

and data/information queries. Projects are likely to involve managing and collecting data for traditional use studies

(TUS) and general mapping of data in the Territory. The majority of the work will be office-based.

Experience: Experience in PC computers and basic Windows software programs and commands (eg. Opening and

closing windows, cut/copy/paste, etc). Ability to trouble-shoot computer problems and a working knowledge of

spreadsheets are key assets, but will train the right person.

HOW TO APPLY: Bring cover letter and resume to Erin Latham in the Natural Resources Dept of the Band office.

Feel free to come in and ask questions before applying if interested. Applicants will be contacted for interviews.

Introduction to Erin

Hi everyone!

My name is Erin Latham and I have just started in the Natural Resources department at the Band office!

I’m a PhD candidate from the Geography department at the University of Victoria. I just moved this spring from

Alert Bay, and before that was Victoria. I’ve moved around a fair bit, but I’m very happy to be in Port Hardy, and

my dog Bodhi seems to love it too! My research involves learning about aquaculture and the various influences that

effect its development, and how these effect First Nation’s opportunities to engage both in the industry and its

management institutions. Quite a mouthful, I know! The research goals harmonize well with the research goals of

the community, and the GNN has outlined specific community-based objectives and outcomes that will involve us

talking to community members and other local people about aquaculture. I am fortunate to bring my own research

funding, and so you might consider me as an ‘unofficial’ Staff Member at the Band office.

Also while I’m here, and when I’m not reading about aquaculture or discussing aquaculture, I will be providing staff

support to the Natural Resources department primarily through my geographic information systems (GIS) skills. I

will be developing a GIS mentoring program specifically for the GNN which I consider to be more fun than work! I’m

looking forward to working with community members of all ages and finding opportunities to teach and learn about

the exciting world of GIS and maps! I want to thank you all for welcoming me into your community. I’m grateful to

be working here and I look forward to meeting everyone! I am in the Natural Resource office. Feel free to drop by

anytime. You can also reach me by email or phone: [email protected], and (250) 902-0550.
