July 2019

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been yet another very busy year and we are delighted that the pupils have made so much progress in

that time. We are really pleased with the way in which the schools of the federation have continued to work

closely together and we’re sure that you as parents can see the benefits for your children. This is especially

the case with the Y6 pupils who are moving onto their comprehensive schools as they have had several

opportunities to get to know the children in the other schools over the past year. They will undoubtedly still

be a little nervous about September, but we wish them luck whichever school they’re going to.

September will see a change in education in the valley. With the closure of Cymer Comprehensive School, we

will become a new organisation: The Federated Primary Schools of the Upper Afan Valley. I must give my

personal thanks to all of the head-teachers I have worked with in the last six and a half years—I have learned

valuable lessons from you all.

Many thanks for your continued support and we wish you a restful summer holiday.

Safeguarding Across The Federation

We have had a number of parents visit the

office lately expressing their concerns about

vehicles entering or leaving the grounds at speed.

For the safety of our children, we would like to

remind the community that the school car park is to

be used by staff only as there is a risk of accidents

happening (as has happened in the past) if a large

volume of traffic were to enter the area.

This also applies to Breakfast Club times when pupils

are entering the premises.

Those who hold blue badges can visit the office

where suitable arrangements will be made to suit

your needs.

Visitors and delivery vans can access the grounds but

MUST close the gate behind them and proceed at a

sensible speed.

We are aware that there are times when the gate is

left open but stress that at the times when a number

of children are likely to be accessing the area

NO VEHICLES are to enter or leave.

Criw Cymraeg

This term we have enjoyed cwl clwb after school where Criw and non

Criw members celebrated our welshness. We created fact files on famous

welsh people, made posters to put around our school encouraging children to

speak welsh, made love spoons out of salt dough and tasted a variety of welsh

foods such as welsh cakes and bara brith.

Our Tuesday assemblies are well underway and we have loved the new welsh

songs we have been learning from our Criw who learnt them in

the Urdd Jambori

We have some lovely new interactive welsh boards on our yard

too that children have loved using.

A huge thank you to our Criw this year, you have all worked so hard.

Look out for nominations in September for our new Criw Cymraeg.

Friends of Cymer Afan Primary Summer newsletter 2019

What a successful year!

This year we have paid for the whole school to have a

FREE Christmas and summer trip, paid £5 per child to-

wards an academic trip, given each child an Easter egg,

paid for the leavers’ leaving gifts and much much more!

We were also successful in two different grants; with this

money we had amazing new yard markings for the main

school yard and 4 new iPads where we will be running a

community ICT group from September.

We need you!

Running film nights, applying for grants and

planning fetes are not easy, and the more hands

on deck, the easier each job becomes. Please

come along and join us next year, whether it’s

to help fill in forms, serve tea and coffee or

to add your great ideas. We always welcome new

members; after all, we are doing it for the

benefit of our children!

Summer fete 2019

We were so lucky to have the sun shine

down on us for our second summer

fete. Thank you to everyone who

attended helped out and donated cakes

and raffles helping us to raise a fantastic

£494.

Goodbye and good luck!

We would like to say a huge good bye and good luck to our year 6 children. We wish them the very best of

luck for their next chapter in secondary education! Also a big good luck to the other children as they all

move up a year in September!

Summer BINGO!

We love BINGO! There is always a great turn out to help

us raise money. Thank you for helping us raise a total of

£290.

Alzheimer’s Cupcake afternoon

Thank you for helping us support such a

worthy charity, we raised an amazing £203!

Finally we would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us

over the past academic year helping us raise a fantastic £2569.24! We wouldn’t

have been able to raise such amazing funds and treated the school and children if

it wasn’t for your support. We look forward to more fun fundraising next year!

Have a wonderful break!

We had lots of fun walking to the Gelli Houses whilst raising money for Cancer Research UK

#raceforlife. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed ’racing’ the grown ups as they do every year.

You helped Cymer Primary raise an amazing £129.67 which will be donated along with the

Federated Schools sponsors.

Well done to everyone.

After spending many years coming in to the primary schools to present very interesting assemblies enjoyed by all pupils, Mr and Mrs Ashmore have decided that it is time to spend some time relaxing.

We wish them both the very best in their retirement and staff and pupils would like to say a huge thank you to them for the time they have given over the years.

SPORTS DAY

Well done to the Yellow team on

winning the Sport’s day cup again this

year. Everyone who took part put in an

amazing effort and thoroughly enjoyed

themselves. We were fortunate to have

a gnat free lovely day so thank you also

to all the people who came along in

support of the pupils.

Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the

fete this year.

Thank you to the Mayor of

Neath Port Talbot, Cllr Scott

Jones for attending and joining

in with pupils.

We were fortunate to have a

beautifully sunny day.

Thank you to the

PTA for hosting

the day, families

and friends for

attending and

donating and

school staff for

manning the

stations.
