Sim and Susan Shapiro, this year’s honorees, represent both pioneers of the original Young Israel of White Plains and the second generation that helped grow the shul and community into its current vibrant position. College sweethearts who met at Boston University, Sim and Susan came to White Plains in 1993 while the community was still in transition. For Sim this was a return to his roots. He was raised in White Plains and attended both Solomon Schechter and Westchester Hebrew High. Susan ia a native of Denver, where she was educated at Hillel Academy and Rocky Mountain Hebrew Academy. Sim is a partner at Baxter, Smith, and Shapiro and Susan is an occupational therapist working with children. Both have continued their families’ tradition of active participation in the Jewish community and give generously of their time and efforts. Sim has served in numerous board positions and advisory roles culminating in his service as shul president from 2005-2008. Even after completing his presidency, Sim continues to dedicate his time to YIWP by coordinating Family Learning Night, NCSY programming, Tikkun Leil Shavuot, and high holiday seating. Susan has provided home hospitality to community visitors, served on the Mishloach Manot committee, organized scholar in residence dinners, and provided food and snacks for the shul youth during the high holidays. They are dedicated parents to their children Avigayil and Isaac, who have grown up at YIWP.

Keter Shem Tov Awardees
Helene and David Schonbrun embody the values of Keter Shem Tov. They have been active members of the Young Israel and White Plains communities since their arrival in 1993, like their fellow honorees and dear friends the Shapiros. David served on the shul board and later co-authored the shul’s constitution. He has also served as a Gabbai, Baal Kriyah, and Baal Tefilah and currently heads the Perek on the Lawn program. Helene was honored by the Young Israel as a Kallah Torah in recognition of her active participation in committee work for the Sisterhood and leadership in implementing and streamlining a highly successful meal program for new mothers, sick congregants, and those sitting shiva. Additionally, Helene served as a member of Westchester Day School’s chesed and outreach committees and recently sponsored a Basketball-a-thon with her daughter to benefit Sharsheret. Both David and Helene are lawyers. David practices insurance regulatory law, and Helene is a writer and editor of law school study guides. David is a graduate of Yeshiva College and the Columbia University School of Law. Helene attended Brooklyn College and the NYU School of Law. They are parents to Aryeh, Atara, and Yakira, who are following in their parents’ footsteps in their service to their shul and community.

Dear Members and Friends:
Every time we take out the Torah we say the posuk קומה ה ויהי בנסוע ארון ויאמר משה - when the ark would travel, Moshe would say a special prayer. In the Sefer Torah, these few verses describing the travel of the Aron Hakodesh are surrounded by upside down “nun,” letters that form brackets. The Talmud tells us that these few psukim are a book unto themselves. There is a message in the creation of a special book that discusses the movement of the Mishkan. The Torah emphasizes that one must have guidance and understanding from “The One On High” to make the Torah a moving force. One needs special skills in order to move a Mikdash in the right direction. This year we honor a couple who have been a moving force in our shul. Sim and Susie, as first couple, were dedicated to each and every member twenty four seven. So much thought, energy and time went into every project that the shul had to undertake. They demonstrated a dynamic leadership that moved our Mikdash Meot – small sanctuary in a most positive direction. Membership grew and the programs increased, as the level of spirituality and holiness was advanced. Tonight we say thank you to Sim and Susie for all their accomplishments in making the Young Israel of White Plains the vibrant community it is today. May they have much Nachat from their children Avigayil and Isaac. Hashem should bless them with good health and energy to continue to be part of the growth and the movement of our shul family. In the spirit moving forward, we pay tribute to David and Helene. They are always there for every member of the community to help them move forward with life. Whether it is with a new mother coping with the challenges of motherhood, someone struggling with health challenges, or G-d forbid a death they are the first phone call. Based on their love for the community, they provide support whenever they are called. May Hashem bless David and Helene with good health and all the blessings of life to continue their good work. They should have much Nachat from Aryeh, Atara and Yakira and see their children carry on their spirit and enthusiasm for Klal Yisrael. Rabbi Greenberg

Dear Members and Friends:
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I have the privilege of inviting and welcoming you to the twenty-fourth annual Young Israel of White Plains Gala. It gives me great pleasure to wish Mazal Tov to our Guests of Honor, Sim and Susan Shapiro, and to wish Yasher Koach to David and Helene Schonbrun, Keter Shem Tov Award recipients.
Our Guests of Honor, Sim and Susan Shapiro, have been actively involved in YIWP for many years and have demonstrated their commitment time and time again in so many ways. They lead by example, knowing that in our shul nothing can be accomplished without the active involvement of its members. Sim was my immediate predecessor as President of YIWP and served with distinction for three years. He left enormous shoes to fill, having been integrally involved in so many initiatives. I am forever grateful for his guidance, wisdom, and friendship. Sim and Susan are dear friends and as I complete my term as President, it is my greatest honor to be able to recognize them for all that they have done for Young Israel of White Plains. This year we are privileged to present the Keter Shem Tov, "crown of a good name", community service award to David and Helene Schonbrun. For David and Helene, we could easily change the name of the award to “crown of good friends”. They embody the ideals on which YIWP is built, a commitment to be there for each other through good times and difficult times. It is likely that almost all of our members have at one time benefited from the Schonbruns unlimited kindness. Sometimes publicly, sometimes privately, but always with the greatest of humility and devotion, they are there to help. At this year’s Gala we will have the opportunity to say thank you to David and Helene for all that they have done for our community.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of YIWP for giving me the honor to serve as President for the past two and a half years. While my term does not end until January, this is the last dinner greeting I will be writing. It has been a privilege.
Finally, I would like to thank our Gala chairwoman Avigyle Gorodischer and her committee of Sheri Krausz, Amy Singer, and Rena Sichel Rosen. This event would not have been possible without them.
Enjoy!
Joseph Englander

Dear Members and Friends,
We are thrilled to present the first annual 2010 Young Israel Gala - A Night of Fun and Games. Our goal is to create an exciting fundraiser that brings the community together to celebrate the selfless devotion of some of our prominent synagogue members, and to raise money in order to provide vital resources for our shul's most basic needs - and at the same time, have some fun!
Here's how the night will work. Upon arriving at Bet Am Shalom on June 6th, you will be greeted by a room filled with food and games ranging from classic ones like Dome Hockey and Billiards (these don't require game tokens to play), to games of chance like Wheel of Fortune and Black Jack (these games require game tokens). Aside from the game tokens you will receive with the purchase of an entry ticket, additional tokens may be purchased in advance through this website or at the event itself. We hope you plan to purchase additional tokens, just as in past years you have purchased raffle tickets. Towards the end of the evening, your winnings will be traded in for raffle tickets to be entered into the Chinese Auction for a chance to win one or more of the exciting donated prizes which will include electronics, sports tickets, jewelry and much more!
The evening will be concluded with dessert and a few words from our honorees, followed by the announcement of our raffle winners. We urge you all to invite friends from within and outside of our immediate community, come early, play hard, have a good time, and give generously.
Thank you in advance for your participation and we look forward to greeting you at the Young Israel of White Plains 2010 Annual Gala!
