“de Hurricane” an Island Bash Hit by Mary Avellone, Hot Flash

The Sun Splash Island Bash on June 16 was a great success with Caribbean island music by de Hurricane and food by Chef Don Lee. Over 110 people tasted Chef Don’s jerked chicken and catfish with mango salsa on our new china plates. And those luscious little key lime tarts! About 20 more came and paid for the music alone. Several members had large groups of guests making it a party within a party. Always welcome! And so many people dancing! We have Ken Harris to thank for finding both the music talent and the food talent that made the evening memorable, Ingrid Grimes-Myles

for her gorgeous table appointments and Scott Roberts’ palm trees together transforming our dining room, Eunice Jackson for her famous brown sugared lemonade, Brenda Hampton for her gracious welcome to all seeking their tickets, Commodore Robertson for her runs to the store, Jan and Dennis Hansen for assisting even when not called upon, David Dobbs for supplying parking permits, and our galley man Joe Sanders for his untiring good cheer and hard work. Diane Jaderberg’s work in getting the galley in shipshape made it possible for Chef Don to cook there. Thank you all!.

FROM THE BRIDGE Commodore Wanda Robertson

Jackson Park Yacht Club is officially opened for the 2007 Boating Season! The Opening Day Ceremony had a great turnout of members, family, friends, Alderman Leslie Hairston, Westrec management Scott Stevenson and Jerry Metzger as well as our very own helpful harbor personnel: new Harbormaster Nancy David, and staff Toni, Oscar, Zackery, Tyron and Akilah. We could not have asked for a more beautiful day with a delicious brunch, camaraderie, and the largest Fleet Review we have had in many years -- both sail and power. I wish to thank Past Commodore Stanley Hill for his foresight, dedication, and energy to JPYC. During his tenure, he worked diligently with the Board to update our clubhouse. Johann Hudson, Director/House Chair took responsibility for major projects and completed many of them himself with the help of other members. Beautification and maintenance of the landscaping was carried out by Tony Pecelunas and Jan and Bob Craven.

Commodore Hill put just as much energy and excitement into increasing JPYC’s membership. He personally sponsored many Associate Members during his tenure on the Bridge.

I am looking forward to continuing my relationship with the Officers and Directors and utilizing the tremendous resources and support from all of the Past Commodores. This is going to be a busy and exciting year. Fleet Captain Jan Hansen has planned an aggressive racing schedule with opportunities for new and experienced, sail and power racers. JPYC is known for

“fun” parties and Entertainment Chair Mary Avellone has a party calendar to keep you in the swing of things. As we move into our summer, I offer some words of wisdom from two of our Former Commodores: From Harlan Dellsey, “JPYC has been constant for over one-hundred and eleven years, we maintain camaraderie, love of the sport, appreciation of nature and of its power.” And from David Dobbs, “It’s all about having fun.”

JPYC Nautical Flea Market -- What a Deal! The bartering was hot and heavy, the streamers were flying and the sun was shining outside the JPYC clubhouse for the first (at least in a long time) Nautical Flea Market. Shoppers could find everything from fine jewelry to foul weather gear to rigging hardware to bumpers. You could weather a storm, be dry

and look good doing it after shopping the market. Hats off to Edmond Gueringer and the other workers. And cudos to Pam Rice for the great flyers and promotion. If the volunteers and vendors are willing, how about next year.

JPYC Racing

Every Wed Night 5:00 pm – food available

6:00 pm – Captain’s Meeting 7:00 pm – Race Begins

JPYC race season is well underway and will continue every Wednesday evening for the rest of the season. If you’re new to racing, now’s the perfect time to jump into the “Cruiser Class” for first year racers. So far the “Cruiser Class” is wide open and there’s trophies to be had. For more information contact JPYC Race Committee Chair Janet Hansen of Decembers Child.

Sat. “Popcorn Parties” The “Popcorn Parties” got off to a great start on June 2nd with Tess & Frank Garner as the hosts for the kick-off. The parties start about 4:30 pm every Saturday. While many JPYC members who know the joy of hosting one of these parties have signed up, there are still a number of Saturday’s left. So add your name to the list on the clubhouse bulletin board or contact John and Cherie Parker of Dippy K II for host signup or more information.

Opening Day c o n t f r o m p . 1

Important guests included Alderwoman Leslie Hariston of the 5th Ward, who stopped by before the ceremony to bring her best wishes, and Jackson Park’s new Harbormistress, Nancy David, who also attended. Club Steward Daryl Jones observed that one of the best parts of opening day is the gathering together of members and friends who had not seen each other all winter. It was particularly fun to have Past Commodore Frank Garner and Tess Garner back from Florida for the event. Following the blessing of the fleet and the firing of the cannon by Bart Hoglund, members

enjoyed brunch catered by Lenore’s Kitchen. The menu included fruit plate, rock Cornish hens, tilapia, grilled vegetables, black beans and

rice, greens, and assorted sweets. Thanks to Vice Commodore Avellone for organizing the brunch, to Eunice Jackson-Lyle for decorations, and to Director Diane Jaderberg for organizing the kitchen clean-up. This is not to forget the assistance provided by many additional member volunteers who helped clean, organize, and arrange the Clubhouse for this special day. Commodore Robertson observed that this opening day was particularly meaningful for her as the first woman Commodore of JPYC. Vice Commodore Avellone said opening day is important to her and JPYC because it marks the official opening of the Club and the yachting season, a tradition followed by yacht clubs around the world. .

One Day – 5 Boats – 13 Races by Steve Haislet

On June 2nd, five J-105s gathered at JPYC to go at it for the 3rd annual JPYC J105 Match Race Invitational. Started by Frank Whittosch in 2005 as a way to attract boats to Jackson Park, the race has continued to prosper and looks like it will continue to be an event to watch for on the calendar. In match racing, boats race each other two at a time. In our case that meant 13 races in one day! Whew. Match racing is different than fleet racing. For example, during the starting sequence in match

racing it is more important to gain a right-of-way advantage over the other boat than to cross the starting line as soon as the gun fires. Other maneuvers you might see are slowing the boat down or even sailing backwards. JPYC is breaking new ground each time it holds the J105 match race. We have a copy of the

North U Match Racing Guide on the desktop in the club if you’re interested in learning more. See Race Committee Chair Janet Hansen if you want to come out and help in 2008.

Entertainment News Mary Avellone, Entertainment Cmte Chair

NEW LIVE-MUSIC PARTY PRICING Beginning with the Island Bash there has been a slight change in the party setup and pricing to help make our entertainment events pay for themselves, and to allow for paid assistance in the galley for our parties so all members may enjoy the celebration.

Charging $10 for “music-only” folks to help defray the costs of the music. All “music-only” folks can still bring their own food. We welcome them.

Using different wristbands to identify paid “meal” folks (meal includes music) and paid “music-only” folks. Everyone attending should have a wristband indicating they have paid.

This is a change. We need the cooperation of all the membership in reminding our guests and ourselves that everyone attending the party is expected to make the appropriate contribution for their music or meal, and wear a wristband indicating they have done so. If you see someone not wearing a wristband give that person a friendly reminder to buy one. In this way, all who partake contribute, and that in turn makes the parties more fun for all. We welcome comments and thoughts about this change. GUEST PARKING AFTER 11:00 PM If you have a guest parked above the clubhouse after 11 pm they must: • Park south of the club pedestrian entrance, • Obtain a special JPYC parking permit and display it in the driver’s side window, • If they receive a ticket, to have ticket voided, MUST go within 2 days to the 3rd District Police Station at 71st and Cottage Grove, with the permit and ticket, • After the 2nd day, appear with permit at court date shown on ticket.

OPENING DAY THANKS Opening Day would not be possible without the help of many volunteers. In addition to those mentioned in the Opening Day articles, we want to thank: Ken Harris and Angelo Braxton who managed the audio, Jane and Ray Leuthold who washed down the deck, Friday movie watchers Wanda Robertson, Vonnie Nelson, and Pam Rice for the invitations, Wendy Graves who arranged the linens, the many Friday movie watchers including Wesley Smith, Dennis and Jan Hansen, the Luetholds, and Pam Rice, who prepped the new flatware, and most especially Eunice Jackson-Lyle who beautified and added class to our dining room, and Diane Jaderberg and her committee for preparing our galley and selling tickets. Thank you!
