Year 11 Retreat On the 28th February the Year 11 attended a retreat day held at the North Perth Redemptorist Monastery. The theme of the Retreat was the “The Ripple Effect” – understanding the choices young adults make in their lives and the onward effect these choices can have. Students explored their faith, lives and personal experiences; relating to God’s guidance. They were led by the Youth Mission Team, and participated in reflection activities, games and prayer. The day concluded with key note speaker; Mrs Louise Clarke. Louise shared her experience with the students, and sensitised the students to the possible consequences of some of the choices and actions they make in their lives.

Year 10 Department Showcase & Career Expo

During Week 4, Year 10 students were immersed in a series of sessions that focused on preparing them to develop a stronger work ethic now, rather than later! The reason for the focus was to emphasise to the students the importance of setting specific goals in order to achieve prerequisites required for subjects leading to the selection process of Year 11 subjects for 2021 in Term 3. We were challenged by extreme weather conditions on the day. However, the students demonstrated terrific attention to speakers and were very grateful for the displays by Department Heads. The day concluded with the Year 10 Parent Information Evening. Incorporating a new approach to preparing our Year 10s is a positive start to ensuring students take on board the need to work hard for their chosen pathway. Gillian Pearce Assistant Deputy Principal of Year 10

JJAMM 2020 The JJAMM (Joseph, Julian and Mary MacKillop) Retreat provides a leadership experience for student leaders in Colleges across Australia and New Zealand who share in the spirit of Mary MacKillop and Fr Julian Tennyson Woods. St Mary MacKillop, with the assistance of Fr Woods, founded the Sisters of St. Joseph order in Australia in the 1800s with a fundamental passion for the rights of all children to receive an education. Sr Irene McCormack was a Sister of St Joseph, who fully embraced the Josephite Spirit in all that she did during her life. Our school was invited to participate in this wonderful five-day experience and we were joined by twenty-six other Catholic Colleges, who also sent along two student leaders and a staff member. The JJAMM experience aims to inspire student leaders to identify with the broader Josephite community and the core values of the Josephite tradition, to explore the nature of leadership and to recognise Mary MacKillop and Fr Woods as role models for living the Gospel. In embracing leadership in the spirit of Joseph, Mary MacKillop and Julian, student leaders are encouraged to return to school and to nurture this spirit in their school communities. Our two student leaders, Traci Grimes and Georgia Ridley, were outstanding ambassadors for our College. Miss Cherie Milne Campus Ministry

“Georgia Ridley and I accompanied Miss Milne as we travelled to Sydney to attend the annual JJAMM Student Leadership Conference for the first time. We learned more about the three significant Christian figures, their stories, and about leadership in a Josephite context. We shared ideas on ways to act on issues around social justice, and display the Josephite character in our unique school environment. JJAMM was an experience of a lifetime, we were encouraged to step out of our comfort zones, where we found ourselves stepping into an environment full of passionate, young Josephite leaders, bringing forward similar ideas and sharing similar visions. Having spent five days with such inspiring school leaders was an enormous privilege, learning from each other and building on our leadership skills in many planned activities and challenges. This enabled us to assist in discovering the gifts and challenges that come with being a leader. The incredible experience has strengthened our leadership and allowed us to look at experiences and opportunities that will be presented to us, as we undertake a leadership role in the 2020 team of Prefects.” Traci Grimes, McGarry Prefect COVID – 19, Novel Coronavirus In the last week the media attention about the spread of COVID -19 has focused on the potential spread of the virus in Australia. The WA Department of Education along with Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) will continue to respond as a collaborative team to advice from the WA Department of Health and provide updated advice to us as appropriate. It is important to be aware that the virus has caused minimal impact in Western Australia. We are advised to go about our daily lives as normal, but to keep take preventative measures, to minimise the spread of the virus. A significant directive from the State Government this week was that all school-related international travel, is not to proceed until further notice. This advice applies to all students and education sector staff across Western Australia except for travel to the USA, Canada and New Zealand providing that this travel does not go through Asia. An outcome of this directive was that with disappointment we informed students and their parents and staff that the French Study Tour and Social Sciences tour to Cambodia during the Term 1 break would be cancelled. The Japan Tour set for January 2021 is still a possibility, but we will have to wait on further directives from State Government and CEWA.

Hairspray! Production Camp On Friday 28 February, 57 students travelled to Advent Park, Maida Vale, for a two-day intensive rehearsal camp for the College Production of Hairspray. Students involved had a fantastic work ethic over the two days and gave everything they had despite being tired and very hot! Cast and dance were given the opportunity to try all costumes for the first time adding an extra level of excitement as it all came into place. Special thanks must go to Miss Naomi Capon, Miss Sinead Harte, Mrs Rachael Knight, Mrs Inez McGinley, Mr Kieran Parkes, Mrs Rosalie Richardson and Mrs Shannon Sheppard for giving up their time to come on the Camp and help with rehearsals, team activities and catering. It is now only three weeks until the opening of Hairspray and tickets are selling fast. Be sure to get your tickets via https://www.trybooking.com/book/ or with cash on Tuesday and Thursday lunch times at the performing arts office.

Library The library is an engaging and welcoming place that continues to go from strength to strength as record numbers of students visit to read, study, socialise and escape the heat and humidity. Before school and during lunch, are particularly busy times. The library’s bright open main space is filled with students from all years and the smaller study room is occupied by year 11 and 12 students taking advantage of the quiet area to work towards achieving their best. Homework Club has resumed with decent numbers of students utilising the time that the Library is open afterschool. Look out for some more exciting library news in the weeks to come. Project Compassion Stories: First week of Lent Around 2.8 million children in the Philippines do not go to school. We begin Project Compassion learning about the story of Shirley and her struggle to support her family and keep her children in school. Shirley faced regular discrimination and disadvantage, limiting her family’s access to food, education, employment and healthcare. With Caritas Australia’s support, Shirley trained to become an Indigenous Health Worker and has learnt to supplement her income to feed her family. The program has also empowered Shirley to send her children to school. Let’s go Further, Together!
