Example Sentences

Questions

Today you will be planning the sentences that you will be writing about diet and feeding. So far we have given background information to Pandora and written about the anatomy of an insect.

Today we will look at the diet of the creature that you have created.

Before we begin to write, go to this website and read about what insects eat and how they feed. This will give you ideas for your own creature.

https://flexbooks.ck12.org/cbook/ck-12-middle-school-life-science 2.0/ section/ 9.16/ primary/lesson/insect-food-ms-ls

As you read, check the meaning of any technical vocabulary that you come across and note down any interesting or useful words and phrases on the ‘language lifter’ sheet.

You can now add this detail about the creature’s diet and feeding to your diagram.

Today you will be planning the sentences that you will be writing about diet and feeding. Now read the Water Scorpion information on resource sheet 4b and answer the questions. Remember that we want the report to remain formal.

If you find any pieces of information that you would like to add to your language lifter sheet, now is the time to add them.

Task: plan the sentences that you will be writing about diet and feeding.

Look again at your creature and plan what you will be adding to the non-chronological report about the creature’s diet and how it feeds.

Use the website and the notes from the language lifter sheet to help you plan your opening sentence and which sentence openers (adverbials), technical vocabulary, verb phrases and interesting facts you will include in your paragraph.

You can see examples in the WAGOLL.

WAGOLL: Diet - feeding on leaves, seeds and nectar

from a range of plants on Pandora's tropical rainforest floor. (make up names)

Proboscis - long, tube-like mouthpart that can reach deep within a flower. Used to siphon nectar from the deep within the flower.

Mouth - sharp point on the maxilla is developed to hold the thick leaves while the mandible protrudes slightly to aid gripping and slicing of the tough woody stems.

Plenary: Have you included •Different sentence starters • Technical vocabulary appropriate to the type of insect

that you have created • Exciting verb phrases that describe the feeding process • Interesting facts that can be added to the end of the

paragraph

Go through and add any additional information that you can find.

Reflection: Lesson 5
