Day 1: 1.6.20Topic

Lots of people are working really hard to tackle coronavirus. They're helping people out in all sorts of ways. These people are called key workers. They are making sure that people are looked after, vital supplies are delivered to shops, and that communities run smoothly for everyone.

Lots of you are staying home with your families at the moment, but there are some families that have parents or guardians who are key workers. Some children are still going to school so their parents can do important jobs .

Frontline NHS workers have been key to responding to the pandemic, but workers in other critical areas such as education, social care, the emergency services, food supply, local and national government, the police and army will also have a key role to play.

Did you know it is estimated that there are approximately 7.1 million key workers across the UK?

Have you been celebrating the NHS and key workers by joining in the weekly Clap for our Carers every Thursday at 8pm?

Can you identify keyworkers that work in your local community? How many keyworker jobs do you know? Write these down in your book. Choose three key worker jobs and list how these key workers are helping during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Day 2: 2.6.20Topic

Many people recognise that being a key worker is extremely rewarding. Pictured above is 17-year-old carer, Kia Tobin, who works in a care home in Lancashire. She has made the ultimate sacrifice to keep her vulnerable patients safe during the Covid-19 crisis. She moved into the care home to minimise the risk of coronavirus and she has not seen her own home or family since the government lockdown. Kia volunteered to take the incredible step because she felt it was the only way to keep residents safe in the care home.

There are so many key workers who are like Kia and have made many sacrifices.

Do you know a key worker? How have they helped you or your family since lockdown? Have they inspired you to be a key worker?Do you know someone who works in the NHS, a supermarket, as a delivery worker or has another key worker position?

Let’s join together to say a big ‘thank you’ to all the key workers who are helping us to stay safe and keep our communities running. Write a thank you letter to show appreciation for someone you know working at this time.

Remember, once you have finished writing your letter, post it to them. The acknowledgment of their hard work will surely bring a smile to their face and brighten their day!

Instructions to play ‘Silly Stories’ (wellbeing game)

Everyone sits in a circle. Each family member takes it in turns to add one word/sentence to create a silly story. This can be a fun way to get creative and to stay positive!

As you go round everyone adds the next word, without repeating what has already been said.

Good starting words are ‘suddenly’ or ‘earlier’ to help build suspense and intrigue. What different techniques will you use to make the story funny?

Continue going round the circle as you try to build the funniest version, the more unexpected the better!

Why not add costumes and props made from things found around the house to help bring your family story to life?

Day 4: 4.6.20Science

POINTS TO NOTE: Attaching the balloon to the bottleneck can prove tricky. TOP TIP -Place four fingers inside the neck of the balloon and open it gently without splitting it. Invert the neck of the balloon over the top of the bottle whilst keeping the body of the balloon vertical. Ensure the baking soda remains in the body of the balloon until it is completely attached. Complete the experiment with an adult. You may choose to use aprons. Ensure all bottles are clean to prevent contamination, which could alter the result

of the experiment.

This is a reaction between a base (baking soda) and an acid (vinegar). It produces a gas called CO2 , one of the gases we breathe out. The gasproduced by the reaction cannot escape and therefore fills the balloon.

Follow the instructions and think about the following: What is making the balloon inflate? What happens if you dilute the vinegar even more? What happens if you make the water/vinegar solution strong? What can CO2 be used for?

When designing your poster or banner you might need to think about a design that will be appealing. Will your poster or banner have a slogan? Why are there often rainbows on these posters? Will your poster or banner have one?The Year 5 team look forward to seeing your posters or banners when you return to school.
