Main activity: Sweets!

1. Look at the pictures of the sweets below. Make a list of nouns that you would see in a sweet shop (e.g. gummy bears, fried eggs, fizzy flying saucers, Smarties, Cola bottles). There is a table on the next page for you to copy/print to record your ideas.

2. Then, make a list of adjectives to describe your nouns (e.g. succulent, creamy, fruity, heavenly). Use a thesaurus to improve the words that you are thinking of. Try to be as adventurous as you can with your vocabulary.

3. Finally, write a list of onomatopoeic words (words that mean the sound they make, e.g. crash, bang, rustle). Search online if you are struggling to find words.

4. Keep your work from today somewhere safe as you will need it tomorrow.

Use the table below to record your ideas if you want to. The table can be drawn out rather than printed if it is easier.

Main activity: Sweets continued! Yesterday, you looked at some pictures of sweets and thought of nouns, adjectives and onomatopoeic words. Make sure you have these as you need them for today’s work. The aim of today’s activity is to use your work from yesterday to write a short poem about a sweet shop coming to life! To start your poem, you need to choose a noun, adjective and onomatopoeia to create your first line. For example: ‘Yummy Jelly Babies giggle’ or ‘Fabulous flying saucers flutter’. Once you have some ideas, you can start to write your poem. Use the following to start your poem and then add in your own ideas:

When the lights go out, the sweet shop comes to life...

Use the example below if you are struggling:

The Sweet Shop

When the lights go out, the sweet shop comes to life...

sticky candy floss whizz and whisper, squashy humbugs grunt and fizz,

delicious donuts splutter, crunchy cakes bam,

bashing smarties explode, rich Easter eggs rumble and grumble,

scrummy fizzy drinks explode and thump, yummy chocolate animals jump and wriggle,

silly Haribo jiggle and jangle, sickly rainbows fizz and whizz, ...for when the lights go out, the sweet shop comes to life.

Main activity: Today you will need to spend some time researching coral reefs, so that you can then write about them tomorrow. You will need to gather some facts and figures about coral reefs. Make sure you gather enough interesting information about coral reefs to be able to write about them confidently. Use the questions below as a starting point for your research.

• What are coral reefs? Can you find out the names of some of them?

• Why are coral reefs important?

• Where are coral reefs found?

• What living things are found in coral reefs?

• Why are coral reefs endangered? What is happening to them?

You may want to use the video and weblinks below to help you with your research: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6helg5 https://www.livescience.com/40276-coral-reefs.html https://wwf.panda.org/our_work/oceans/coasts/coral_reefs/ https://www.noaa.gov/education/resource-collections/marine-life/coral-reef-ecosystems You may also want to use the poster on the next page to help with your research. Spelling activity: Spend some time practising the same 15 spellings as yesterday. Think of a new way to practise your spellings - be as creative as you can! Complete the Look, Cover, Write and Check activity for your spellings. Starter activity: Read the sentence below and identify/answer the seven questions below.

Main activity: Find your research on coral reefs from yesterday. You will need it to create an information text about coral reefs. Firstly, create a mind map of sentence openers that you would like to use. For example:

• Interestingly, • Surprisingly, • Amazingly, • Unfortunately,

Once you have your openers, you are ready to start writing. You will need to think carefully about the openers that you use to start your sentences off (e.g. don’t use ‘surprisingly’ as your opener if what you write about in your sentence isn’t surprising to the reader!). Things you may want to include in your information text:

• Title • Subheadings (use the questions from yesterday for these if you’re stuck for ideas) • Pictures/diagrams

• Bullet point list • Captions • Facts/figures • ‘Did You Know..?’ box/facts

Grammar/punctuation checklist to include in your writing:

• Fronted adverbials (remember your commas) • Capital letters and full stops • Question/exclamation marks • Commas in a list • Variety of conjunctions (Coordinating: FANBOYS; Subordinating: I SAW A WABUB) • Relative clause
