OVERVIEW OF MODULE

In this PowerPoint you will find art

activities relating to the topic of

deforestation.

• It is important to note that

these are starter activities and

can be interpreted and

adapted in different ways to

suit you, your child and your

available resources.

• It does not matter which order

you do the art activities.

• If you need any advice or

assistance, please email me,

[email protected]

DESIGN A TOURIST

POSTER FOR 2120 ON

THE THEME OF

‘DEFORESTATION’

Monk HF, an artist

based in Belgium, is

an extensive traveller

who creates tourism-

style posters designed

to merge idyllic scenes

with the harsh realities

of war, pollution,

migration and

deforestation.

• It is 2120, the world is a very different place because not

enough was done to preserve it…!

• Design a poster of a popular tourist spot and depict what it

may look like in 100 years time.

• Use paper, pencils/pen/paint

• Include the date, ‘2120’ and keep lettering bold with a clear

message.

T2 HYBRID ANIMALS

How will animals and their environments evolve to look like in 500 years from now? What was the impact of deforestation and Climate change?

TASK

Using pencil/pen/paint/collage, create a hybrid animal and write a paragraph about it. Give your hybrid a name, label and describe and justify key features.

DESIGN A T-SHIRTTASK

• Design a T-shirt that

protests against

deforestation

• The design needs to be

aimed at your age group

• Think about the placement

of your design. Are there

words on the front AND the

back? Could you design a

logo for the sleeve?

• You could use a template

or draw out a t-shirt on

paper.

• You can use pencil, pen or

paint for this task

• Remember to label key

design features and

colours.

ENDANGERED PLANT/FLOWER STUDY

Native plants face many of the same threats to their survival that are

faced by threatened and endangered animals. Deforestation, habitat

loss, invasive species and over-harvesting are among the factors that are

pushing more plants toward the brink of extinction. While the future is

uncertain for many species, for some there is no future.

T4

Jade Liana is firstly amazed by its colour, a

spectacular turquoise, very rarely found in

nature. Its natural habitat is in the Philippines,

but the flower is very rare to find ,on top of

which is threatened by local deforestation.

Corpse flowers, which are threatened by poachers

and deforestation in their native Sumatra

Take some

inspiration from

artist Georgia

O’Keeffe who is

best known for

her close-up, or

large-scale

flower paintings

TASK• Research flowers and plants

endangered by deforestation or use

the images here and choose one to

draw

• On paper, sketch out your chosen

flower/plant. Perhaps try to do a close-

up view like Georgia O’Keeffe?

• Put the name of your chosen

plant/flower at the top of the page and

write a short paragraph about it

beneath your artwork

• You can work any size and use pencil,

pen, paint or even pastel

RE-IMAGINED ARTWORKS

Edinburgh University scientist Dr. Ian Woodhouse hates deforestation! He had the trees rather skilfully

Photoshopped out of Georges Seurat’s Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grande Jatte (1884-86), John

Constable’s The Hay Wain (1821) and Vincent van Gogh’s Olive Trees with Yellow Sky and Sun (1889).

TASK

• Research famous landscape paintings online

or in a book and choose one that you really

like

• Look carefully at the composition, style and

mark making technique used by the artist

• Recreate the artwork using pencil, pen, paint

or pastels but remove the trees, foliage and

flowers that are present in the original

artwork.

• Annotate how you feel about the original

painting and your recreation. Is your painting

still recognisable as being inspired by the

artwork that you chose? How does it make

you feel?

ANIMALS UNDER THREAT DUE TO DEFORESTATION

TASK• Research animals

currently under threat

from deforestation

• Once you have chosen

your animal, think about

how you could make your

artwork eye-catching

• You could put your animal

at the base of a sand

timer? Or maybe in a

segment of a clock?

• Work on paper and use

pencil/pen/paint/pastel/

collage
