Year 4
Living Things and their habitats
Week 3 Lesson 1-5
Dear Year 4,
There are many activities for you to work through in this booklet. Although it is divided
into sessions to be used on a daily basis. Some activities may take longer, so work at
your own pace and try your best.
-Mrs Modha and Miss Beck
Session 1
A habitat is a place where animals and plants live, where they can find everything they
need to stay alive.
A habitat can be as big as the ocean or as small as a rock.
What is your habitat? Discuss with someone else.
Create a brainstorm about your habitat. Use the following questions to help you.
Where do you live?
What living things live and grow there?
Hw does your habitat keep you safe and sheltered?
How does your habitat provide food and water?
How does your habitat provide space for you to move and grow?
As humans we are unique because we can make big changes to our habitats to make
sure we have everything we need.
Make a list of all the things humans do to change their environment to meet their
needs.
Session 2
In the last session we looked at how humans can change their environment and habitat
to support their needs.
However, plants and animals can’t do what humans can. Plants and animals are not
able to make big changes to their habitat to make it more suitable, like we are. They re-
ly on their environment to give them everything they need.
This means that when habitats change it can be very dangerous to the plant and ani-
mals that live there.
What dangers to living things can you see in the pictures below? Make a list.
Can you think of anymore?
Session 3
Discuss with someone:
What is this a picture of?
Where does it come from?
What can it be used for?
What do you know about bees?
Talk about the picture below with an adult.
Session 4

Watch the clip above.
Act out the process of pollination. You can do this by yourself and ask an adult to rec-
ord you. Or you could get everyone involved. You will need at least two flowers and at
least one bee to demonstrate the process. You could make some props too.
Listen to the BBC report about bees on the link below:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-18445221/bee-number-losses-increasing
Discuss:
How does what the news report was discussing affect us?
What do bees do for us?
Create a brainstorm of things we can do to protect the bees.
Watch the clip on the following link:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/video_and_audio/headlines/36349379/are-killer-asian-
hornets-on-their-way-to-the-uk
After watching the video:
Discuss which insect is the problem and why?
Can you draw a picture of what you think it looks like? Can you write a short descrip-
tion for it?
Session 5
Habitats and Habitat Threats
Litter can cause injury to animals. Animals can cut themselves or get tangled or trapped in
rubbish.
Animals might eat litter, this could poison or injure them.
Fire caused by humans can kill animals and plants.
Chemicals in or near water can kill water plants, fish and insects and pollute the water
source for birds and animals who live nearby.
Roads are dangerous for animals, who are often hit by cars.
Cutting down trees and building new structures can destroy plants and animal homes.
Walls and fences can get in the way of pathways used by animals to reach food and water.
Tall grass and flowers are an important habitat. Plants and animals lose their habitat when
it is cut down.
Think about a habitat in your local area., this can be in your garden or somewhere you can
see from a balcony.
Draw a sketch of the habitat. On your sketch draw and label any environmental dangers
you see. Then fill in the table on the next page. Record the dangerous changes that you
noted in the local habitat, what danger they pose, and a suggestion for helping the local
wildlife.

Helping the Local Habitat
There are lots of ways you can help the local environment.
Complete your Helping the Local Habitat Activity Sheet on the following page by draw-
ing one idea you have for helping the local habitat.
Add a brief explanation of how it will help protect the local living things.
Draw and label your ideas for helping the local habitat
How will it protect the living things?
