Year 3 and 4 Camp
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome back to Term 3. This is the term with a significant focus on careers planning and pathways. This week we held our Course Information Evening for students in Years 9-11, followed by individual course counselling for students in Year 9-11. Year 12 students will meet with Careers teacher Mr Drew Deppeler to discuss their specific post-school pathway. Over the holidays there was a considerable amount of work done around the school. Thank you to TSPA for the all the funds that they have raised which have contributed to much of the work around the school. In JV 2 the toilets have been upgraded, the hall in the gym has been resurfaced and it looks amazing. We had a number of trees cut down to ensure there are safe play areas for students. There has also been other maintenance work around the school. I am in the process of working with students and staff on improving the playground areas for students. We have been successful in obtaining $100,000 to spend on new playground equipment. This will be in place for the start of the 2020 school year. A special mention to the Primary School Arts showcase. This was a great way to end the term to see all the work the primary students have done in Art, Music and Japanese. Well done to all the students and the teachers involved it was a real highlight. This week we have had the Year 3 and 4 students head off on Camp to Kangaroobie and the Year 10 students to Melbourne for their “Melbourne Experience”. Thanks to all the teachers involved and I hope the students have a great time. The Year 5 /6 and Year 11/12 students had a presentation on Monday regarding cyber safety and safe partying. These are two important issues that our young people face today and thanks to Ms Neal for organising this. The Year 9 students also had an opportunity to experience the Corangamite Trade Training Cluster (CTTC). The CTTC is the schools in the region offering VET courses for our students in courses such as hospitality, music and engineering. Term 3 is a very busy term with students involved in many activities and it is great to see them enjoying all the different experiences and taking the opportunities available to them. STORY TIME IS BACK. Each Wednesday at 11.00 the school is holding story time in the Library. This is open to all families and children from the day care/ kinder will be in attendance. SSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome back everyone to a busy Term 3. A special welcome to a new families to the school, Olivia and Declan Brumby, along with their parents John and Alisha, and Saxon and Gage Rogers, with their parents Stewart and Desirae.
Reports Semester 1 reports are available on Compass, if you haven’t already looked. If you wish to request a follow up with your child’s classroom teacher, please feel welcome to make an appointment. The next Parent-Teacher Interviews are on Wednesday 11th September, from 4pm till 7pm. Again, bookings can be made via Compass, closer to the date.
Arts Showcase Thank you to the many parents and grandparents who attended our Arts Showcase event at the end of last term. The students did a wonderful job in overcoming their nerves to present to the audience and the Art work on display was magnificent. Our plans are to have this event at the end of Semester 1 each year – I would love to hear your feedback.
Kangaroobie Camp Year 3-4s looked a little nervous, yet excited to be heading off on their three day camp this morning. I expect there will be some very tired little people when they return on Friday (and adults) as their days are packed full of activities and adventures. Thank you to Justin Roberts for supporting the staff on Camp.
P-6 Assembly Due to the camp, our P-6 Assembly will be on Wednesday 31st August, from 9:10am in the Hall. Mrs McMeel’s class will be comparing. Please come along to hear the students share their wonderful camp experience and report on what’s been happening in the P-6 classrooms.
Transition from Kinder to School Mrs Krueger and Mrs Coates will be running an information session on Monday for Kinder parents. The focus is on preparing children for school. Enrolment forms are now available from the office for all new families wishing to start in 2020, and are due back by Friday 16th August.
Teacher Professional Development Our Year 1-2 team of teachers, plus Mrs Coates, Mr Reid and myself, began our Sounds Write training this week. Sounds Write is a program that builds knowledge and skills in the explicit and systematic teaching of reading and writing, focusing on spelling. I will share more with parents as I learn more and we are looking into having a parent information session (especially for our P-2 parents) in the coming months. Stay tuned.
Busy calendar Reminder that you can access the most up-to-date calendar of events via Compass. If you are unable to login, or want further information on how to access this, please contact the office.
Uniform and Clothing There is a growing number of unclaimed/lost jumpers. Please ensure your child’s clothing is named so we can return it if needed. We are running short on spare clothing for students to change into if they have an accident in the yard. Can I ask that if you have any spare, old uniform items, such as grey pants or jumpers with the zip broken, that you no longer need, please consider donating them to the school. We need clothes of all sizes. You can leave them at the front office or deliver them to my office. It would be greatly appreciated. GILL HAMPTON P-6 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Real Chemistry in action
Recently Beach Energy once again hosted our Year 11 Chemistry
students as they undertook a site tour of the Otway Gas Plant.
Community Relations Manager, Linda French, conducted the site
safety induction exercise and students were made aware of the
strict protocols in place to ensure that all staff and visitors remain
safe on site. Linda described how hydrocarbons are formed, the
location of Australia’s gas basins, and how gas and oil is found on
land and off shore. Michael Binstead detailed how gas is produced
at the Otway Gas Plant when hydrocarbons, or raw gas containing
water; petroleum products; gasses; and unwanted inert gasses
including nitrogen and carbon dioxide flow from production wells
through buried pipelines to the gas plant. The carbon dioxide is
detached and the gas is dehydrated to remove water and
mercury. Natural gas is then removed and undergoes
fractionation to produce ethane, propane and butane. Students
learnt from the Production Site Manager about the range of
careers at the site including engineers, technicians, chemists,
accountants, and contractors before Paul Said accompanied
students on a site tour where they could see the gas production
in process – real chemistry in action!
2019 CCC town tour
To conclude our CCC class for this semester students visited two
local businesses to investigate careers in agriculture based in the
Timboon township itself. Cherolyn Bullen, from Bullen’s
Wholesale Nursery, described the history of the business and its
current structure, business model, produce and markets.
Cherolyn stressed the importance of good quality soil for the
potting mix and the business’ use of technology to pot plants and
in the greenhouse. The staff worked on keeping the plants
healthy and ready for market while keeping up with maintenance
and paying attention to detail to ensure that the best quality
plants were produced. Veterinarian, Peter Younis from The Vet
Group, hosted our students as they learnt about the variety of
careers that vets involved in their practice undertook such as
large and small animal vets, agricultural consultants, trainers,
international consultants and researchers. Pete described the
traits that he thought made good vets including empathy, ability
to collaborate, a good listener, being curious, good
communication skills, being adaptable and giving and stressed his
reliance on community participation and volunteerism when
choosing applicants for a role at The Vet Group. Students toured
the vet practice rooms including the surgery and xray facilities
and considered the variety of careers involved in the production
of the goods for sale in the practice’s foyer and front office. Who
knew?
Thanks to Murray Rhodes and Timboon Motors who shared this
Facebook post celebrating Milky's new look!
"Our master spray-painter and his apprentices were more than
happy to put the finishing touches on this masterpiece! Well done
to the Timboon P12 School Year 3/4 students on creating this
spectacular show piece! We look forward to continuing this
collaboration in the future" Thanks also to Martin's Timber and
Hardware who supplied the paints for our Picasso Cow and
especially to Christine Carter who re-tinted the sample pots that
were donated to the school for this project which resulted in
Milky's gorgeous coat. She looks brilliant!
Step up
As part of the TAP and to conclude the Year 7/8 ‘Have your say’
politics elective, we invited Corangamite Shire’s 2019 Citizen of
the Year, Donna Ellis, to challenge our students about ways that
they can be involved in their community. We opened up this
session to all Year 7/8 students who learnt that, according to the
Census, one in five people volunteer, that females are more likely
to volunteer than males and that there are distinct peaks; females
in their 40s, both sexes in their late teens and again in senior years
from 60-75 years for both sexes. Students debated the rationale
behind these statistics and discussed the various types of areas
people can volunteer in such as the environment, sport, aged
care, schools, fundraising, health, emergency services etc.
Students then nominated different examples of these volunteer
organisations, discussed why people in rural areas were more
likely to volunteer and discovered that it was a result of perhaps
a stronger sense of community and belonging. We hope that our
students will consider being more active contributors to their
community moving forward. Great Lesson, thanks Donna.
