We would like to celebrate our students taking action outside ofschool

Please could you email examples to me, [email protected], and I will sharethrough our newsletter.

There are different types of Action. Last time I gave a description of how‘participation’ is a form of action, below is an description of how advocacy is a formof action.

English

The children are continuing to develop their English skills as they participate inwriting workshops.

All classes have been inferring as a comprehension strategy. An inference is whenwe use our background knowledge, alongside clues from the text to understandthat which is not explicitly stated.

Central Idea: Measurement involves comparing, ordering and sequencingobjects and events.

Lines of inquiry:

Ways different objects can be measuredDifferent informal measuring tools for comparingWays different objects can be measured using formal unitsChoosing the appropriate tool to measure

Over the next week, the children will finish inquiring into capacity, mass andlength. They will be thinking about non-standard and standard units of measure, estimating and measuring accurately.

All of the Year 2 classes have also spent some time on the Daily 10. This is a usefulway to check and support your child’s mental maths skills. Different levels can beset. Please see the link below: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

Correct letter formation is very important. Please encouragethis at home. Home ReadingPlease read at home with your child each day and sign their Reading Journal. Please encourage your child to write the date and title in their Reading Journal, including for Big Universe. In Big Universe, select ‘Library’. On the right-hand side you will be able to selectthe ‘grade’ for your child. The appropriate grade selection is kindergarten, 1stgrade and 2nd grade. This covers the age group of our children at BHS. Mandarin – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when theyhave Mandarin lessons.

Support your child’s understanding of Measurement even further at home with thefollowing ideas.

Invite your child into the kitchen and have them help weighing andpouring out ingredients for baking.Let them weigh themselves and other objects on the family scales.Measure their height and help them measure the heights of other peoplein the family.Engage them in discussions around estimation, for example, “I think thechair is about 10 hands high. What do you think?” or “I think this milkbottle holds more liquid than this can of coke. How can we find out?”Let them play with measuring cups, jugs and spoons in the shower orbathtub.
