iEducate 2017 Recently Mr Quartermaine and I attended iEducate, a two-day technology conference. The central theme for the event was preparing students for the future. A recurring message was the need for students to have digital literacy and the ability to code in the future. Presenters discussed the impact of robotics in society and the effect this will have on education, employment and the economy. It was refreshing to see that BSS is well on its way with regard to preparing students for the future with involvement in initiatives such as STEM Air, code club, Robotics club, and Mr Quartermaine’s design and digital technology lessons. There were many great suggestions about future innovations such as the use of Minecraft in education, engaging writers through blogging and using features in IOS11 to assist learning. Read all about it! Triple P’s latest parenting magazine The latest issue of Triple P’s Queensland-only parenting magazine, the Tippaper, has just been released. Get great tips for staying cool, calm and collected during storm season, and for making the most of the summer school holidays. Also see how positive parenting has transformed the lives of other families.Read it online or pick up a free hard copy from your child health centre, local PCYC or library, or early childhood centre. Home Reading Incentive Program At assembly last Friday we congratulated more than 40 students who achieved 200 days of home reading this year! In recognition of this wonderful achievement, students were presented with Boondall State School Readers Are Achievers water bottles. I look forward to presenting more awards this week. Good Fit Books Choice has been identified as a powerful force that allows students to take ownership and responsibility for their own learning. Studies indicate that motivation increases when students have opportunities to make choices about what they learn. We think it is essential to spend time teaching our children to choose books that are a "good fit" for them. Good fit books are ones that they can read with 99 % accuracy. At home, you can also empower your child to select good fit books for themselves. Here are some guidelines to follow when selecting a good fit book to read.

Boondall State School’s Instrumental Music Program is now looking at recruitment for 2018 and vacant

positions will first be offered to students who are now in Year 3 (going into Year 4 in 2018). As there are

only a limited number of positions available due to the number of loan instruments and overall instrumental

student numbers there will be some student names placed on our waiting list.

It is important to remember that if a student does not receive a school loaned instrument straight away this does not mean they will not have an opportunity to learn an instrument. Each year there are circumstances which will free up positions. It is also possible that your child may not receive their first preference when it comes to instrument selection but there may be an opportunity to change instruments as the program develops. I look forward to your child being involved in our Instrumental Music Program in 2018.

On Thursday November 2, approximately 100 students came to the “German” Pizza Party! We had won a $100 voucher from Education Perfect, for our amazing results in 2017. At the time of writing this, students from Years 2-6 have answered a staggering 1,765,473 (yes that is 1.7 million!!) German questions this year! So no wonder Education Perfect rewarded our students for their amazing work in class and at home. Let me take this opportunity to thank all of the parents and carers for your support of German, by downloading the EP program and allowing your children to participate from home. We had a lovely lunch as you can see. Students were very thankful and respectful. Thank you to all the teachers and admin who support German at Boondall State School, it really does make a difference. Frau Vlaisa (German teacher) A Growth Mindset response

When faced with challenges: Embrace

Even if I can’t do it, at least there’s something I’ll be able to

learn from the experience.

When encountering difficulty: Persist

It’s not meant to be easy. I’m only learning when it’s hard!

When receiving feedback: Learn from it

Other people know things I don’t know and I can learn from them.

When applying effort: Good thing

Effort is what will change my brain so I can do something new!

When making mistakes: Learn from them

I’m going to make mistakes if I’m truly challenging myself. Mistakes tell me what I still have

to learn and give me useful information.

The Growth Mindset is the understanding that you can change your basic abilities by working in effective ways. Who you become is a result of your own efforts. By understanding Growth Mindset responses we begin to create effective strategies to help our students develop a Growth-oriented Mindset. Original article written by James Anderson, Mindful by Design Amanda Hurkett (Mindset Co-ordinator)

We can now offer parents the ability to pay invoices over the phone using BPoint IVR (Interactive

Voice Response). Parents call 1300 631 073 and enter the CRN (found on your invoice), amount

and credit card details to complete payment. At the end of the call you will be provided with a unique

payment receipt number. The school office is no longer able to take credit card details over the

phone as this is not Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard compliant.

Focus: RESPECT INDEPENDENCE SAFETY EFFORT

Lesson: Follow teacher instructions

WALT/WILF/TIB

We are learning to listen and follow teacher instructions everywhere (class room, playground, parade, tuckshop etc.) to remain safe. What I’m looking for is students to respond appropriately to the teacher instruction everywhere, all of the time. This is because following teacher instructions helps us to stay safe.

Focus: RESPECT INDEPENDENCE SAFETY EFFORT

Lesson: Be friendly

WALT/WILF/TIB

We are learning to make the effort to be a good friend, everywhere all of the time. What I’m looking for is children who make the effort to be a good friend e.g. by showing kindness, sharing, and supporting each other. This is because being friendly is part of showing effort.

Last week at YMCA we have had our new Coordinator start at the service. Claire Acworth has previous experience as a coordinator and has now joined the Boondall team. She has completed her Diploma in Early education and care and has shown a very positive attitude in the past week. Jamie is staying at the service for the next 3 weeks to ensure her smooth transition into this position and provide any training she requires to continue to meet the high expectations YMCA adheres to for its services. We would also like to congratulate Courtney Johnstone. Courtney has been here since YMCA became a part of the Boondall school community. She has developed great relationships with children and parents alike and has stepped up and taken on extra responsibility when the situation has called for it. Although she is not yet experienced or qualified enough to take on a permanent role she is being asked to fulfil the position of most senior staff member after the coordinator and is taking on a leadership role within the team. If you are unable to speak to the Coordinator about any concerns please feel free to go to Courtney next. Our staff team is growing, as well as our long term core staff of Sangeeta and Liam, Shirani has now taken on more hours and is continuing to complete her diploma and grow her skills in childcare. We have also bought into our team Myrna and are in the process of hiring two more staff. YMCA has been working on organising the upcoming Vacation care program for the school holidays. We are having a lot of awesome events including a baby animal petting zoo, Slip & slide, Brix for Kids, Ninja style blow up obstacle course plus many other activities and spontaneous play. We will soon have our holiday booking forms to be sent out via E-mail or they can be collected from the service or school office. Finally we will soon be asking families to complete their 2018 enrolments very soon. The enrolment forms will be sent out via E-mail or can be collected at the service. These enrolments will have to be back to the service by the start of term 1 in order to maintain your childcare bookings. As we come to the end of the year we would like to say a massive thank you to all teachers and support staff, parents and children for the great welcome we have had to the community. We look forward to going into 2018 and continuing to strengthen these relationships and become more involved in the school community events.
