What are we learning at Garin College???

Today, I had the privilege of visiting classrooms to see the range of learning that our Garin learners were participating in.

In Year 9 Art with Mrs Furlong Taylor, they are exploring the concept of pop culture art and the strategy of mixing colours together to create a layered effect. Learners selected a word that had meaning for them and are creating (after a design process) a final product applying all the skills they have learned. We have some very talented young people!

In Year 11 Geography they are studying the impact of Earthquakes and the structure of the Earth’s core. Mr Bucknall presented the examples we can see through the Christchurch and natural landscape of Wellington. He modelled to our learners the concept of Tectonic Shift through the example of his car scrapping my car! I’m not sure about the example, but learners seemed to enjoy this analogy!

In Year 9 Drama with Mrs Millard, they are exploring the genre of Musical & Bollywood. Learners are selecting and then creating a dance movement performance totally created by their group. It was amazing to see how quickly they can self organise, self manage and have the opportunity to create! The Bollywood example in the photo was well thought through thinking about the relationship with the audience and the story they were telling through movement.

In Year 9, Science with Mrs Moorhead, they are exploring the concept of convection and refraction through an analysis of the human pupil. They had a range of learning to develop their understanding which ultimately led to the creation of their own personal hologram. The learners were able to articulate what they were learning and definitely re- taught to me this aspect (sorry to my Science teacher Mr Gaffney).

Until next week, Jeremy Cumming

Ready to Learn

This term we are working in partnership with Garin learners to focus on being ready to learn. We are looking at how your son/ daughter can be active participants in their learning. Not simply sitting there being passive and a bystander - school is something done to them. Ready to learn is about shifting the ownership of learning from teachers to Garin learners, enabling students to have the understanding, ability, and opportunity to be part of the learning design and to take action to intervene in the learning process, to affect outcomes and become powerful lifelong learners. The attributes & behaviors we are setting in our classes are:

Be on time to class Bring a charged device and charger Bring a writing utensil and paper One device at a time Ask first before using phones Engage in your learning Wear the correct uniform

Year 11 - 13 Parent Teacher Conferences 2021 Kia ora Koutou, We are holding our Year 11, Year 12 & Year 13 Parent Teacher Conferences on Wednesday 19th & Thursday 20th May from 3:30 - 5:30pm in the Redwood Block. The length of each conference is five minutes and will enable you to discuss with our teachers the learning, progress and next steps in learning for your son or daughter. Please make sure when making a booking that you allow one interview space (5 minutes) before moving onto the next interview as they occur across several rooms. Please note Mrs Eggers & Mr Kersten (Year 12 & Year 13) Deans are there in a teaching and learning capacity. If you would like to set a meeting with them, please set this through an email to them directly. If there is a teacher who you would like to see and are unable to on both days, please email them and they can organise an email response for you. Garin learners are also encouraged to attend the interviews so they can share with you their learning and the progress they are making. The system allows one interview per Garin learner per teacher. Multiple bookings for one child cannot be made for equity across all Garin Whānau. We have produced a two minute video which will provide a step by step process in order to do this. Special Character Term 2, Week 12

This Sunday is the Sixth Sunday of Easter - Acts 10:25-48, Psalm 98, 1 John 4:7-10, John 15:9-14 Jesus knew he would soon die and rise to new life – this was a sign of his love for everyone. Jesus knew his disciples would struggle to understand why he had to leave, why he had to die. He knew they would find it difficult to accept the things that were to come. So he went to great lengths to reassure them of his love and asked that they would trust and have faith. He asked them to go and share his love with others. “A new commandment I give unto you, that you love

one another, as I have loved you. By this shall all men (and women) know you are my disciples, if you

have love one for another.” [John 13 v 34] Can it be this simple? What about the people we find difficult to love? What about people who cause us fear or pain? Despite all these challenges, the message is clear. The love that Jesus talks about in today’s Gospel requires of us cooperation and sacrifice, but not out of duty or obligation. “This surrender comes from the absolute security of knowing we are loved and cherished by a God who wants the best for us and for those around us. Such surrender brings joy and freedom and a delight in following him and living the loving way” [www.liturgycentre.org]. Prayer In our homes, at work and at school Help us to love one another in what we think and say and do Help us to love one another when there are arguments and when we disagree Help us to love one another when we are tired and not feeling our best Help us to love one another every moment of every day, whether it’s easy or hard Help us to love one another Amen.

Mahi Toi 2021

Information for Students and Families 2021

Week 8 of Term 2, Wednesday the 23rd and Thursday the 24th of June, all normal school activities at Garin College goes on hold while everyone gets involved and we have a fun packed time in a school-wide celebration of the Arts. From Sunday the 20th of June, the gym and school start to transform with the stage going up, windows being decorated and students totally preoccupied with the up and coming event. Every year the Arts Captains come up with a Theme for the festival, this year's theme is:

“Once upon a time…”.

The celebration of Matariki will be included in our festival and activities will be based around a scripture and whakatauki which reflect the celebrations for the week. This year the official start of Mahi Toi will be Wednesday the 23rd of June with the opening ceremony in the morning and concludes on Thursday the 24th of June at 3.10pm. During this time students will be either participating in or watching performances in music, dance and drama and the Catholic primary schools will usually visit during these days. All students will be involved in House Singing and other students will be chosen to participate in various other house activities. The House competitions are a large part of Mahi Toi and the competition is fierce but fun. Workshops - All students will be involved in a workshop on Wednesday morning. These workshops will run for periods 3 and 4 and during this time we will have a space in the Library for junior music performances and in the drama room for junior drama/dance performances . Performers will still be able to sign up for workshops and students will take turns being audience members. The senior school and confident juniors will get the opportunity to perform throughout the Wednesday and Thursday in the gym. Each student must enter 1 x workshop and 1 x other event (excluding house events) with a maximum of 5 events. These events include things such as:

Cake decoration

Wearable art (RAW)

Music, dance or drama performances

Creating and submitting an art work or photograph Friday the 25th of June will be school as normal for most students, we will have some students rehearsing for the community showcase. We will have a dress rehearsal/afternoon show from 3.30pm which would be a great time to bring younger or older members of the family. The official community showcase will be held at 7pm that night. We usually charge a small entry fee to help cover costs. Last year we had to get creative to work around COVID and had a number of online events for students to enter and a full Mahi Toi House Day later in the year which was a lot of fun. We hope we won't have to repeat this for 2021.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact us, Sarah Pumphrey (Arts Coordinator ) [email protected]

or Sharlene Belcher (Head of Department) [email protected]

Reading Challenge

Our annual Garin College Library Reading Challenge starts on Monday, and will run until the end of the month. Every student is challenged to read for pleasure over the 3 weeks, and record the number of pages read, to earn House Points. There are also prizes for the top individual readers in each House, as well as for the whanau with the best participation. Mrs Ditzel is keen to help each student choose a book that they will enjoy - so challenge her to find a story you can't put down! Above all, challenge yourself – If you don’t think of yourself as a reader, give it a go for these 3 weeks. Remember, every page counts, so you don’t even have to finish the book in that time. And if you are a keen reader, how many pages can you read? Can you take out the individual top prize? (Apologies to parents of bookworms – you might not get much out of them over the next 3 weeks!)

Twilight Creative Art Class There will be an after school creative art class running every Tuesday for all Senior Visual Art, Photography and Design students. It starts Week 2 (May 11th). In R3 and R5. 3.10pm until 5pm.

Students are expected to work independently on their folio work.
