...message from our Principal, John Maguire Kia ora tatou ngā whānau, The end of the week marks the halfway point for a busy Term 3 and the view out my office

windows to the mountains is still looking pretty wintery with the snow-covered ranges beyond.

I have taken the opportunity this week to email all parents in regard to student attendance and uniform. These are two areas where respect and commitment to the college and each students learning are shown. They are also areas in which the students are more than capable to assume responsibility for and commit-ment to. Our students show me over and over again the pride they have in their achievements and the College. I am currently focusing on ensuring that these areas of attendance/punctuality, and uniform, are consistent and upheld by all the students. I thank you as Parents and Caregivers for the way in which you also prepare and support your students in attendance and uniform. Your ongoing support for the College is truly appreciated.

This week I would like to introduce you to our two new reception staff. Sarah Turner, begins with us on Wednes-day 4th September, as an Office Administrator, and Maree Hall began last week as our Attendance Officer. They will continue to be ably supported by Mrs Allison Milligan, Office Administrator and led by Mrs Shona Erasmuson as Office Manager. Sarah and Maree are welcomed to our staff and school community and as our front line people to the school. I know you will quickly get to know them and provide them with our wonderful Garin College welcome.

In welcoming others, we farewell Mea Nalder from her role as Office Administrator. Mea has given over and above in her role within the office team. She has been a welcoming connection for so many families and a great support to all staff in her role in the office and beyond. Mea is ‘the salt of the earth’ and has served in so many ways through her work, School Sport, Special Character events, Cultural events, Club Garin participation, School Balls, and has supported families and staff through many events and celebra-tions. Mea is venturing into assuming a more full role in her family business, we know she will always be a part of our Garin Community and we look forward to maintaining connection with her. We thank you wholeheartedly Mea, and wish you God’s blessings for the future. Haere Ra.

Application for enrolment for 2020 were due in today, processing for enrolment is now underway and we will be moving toward organising transitions and classes for next year. If you have family or friends still considering secondary schooling for their children, please encourage them to visit the college or contact our school office for enrolment information.

Junior SISS Netball Tournament On Sunday July 7 our 9A and 10A netball teams loaded up the vans for the drive down to Christchurch for the

Junior SISS Netball Tournament. This event was what we’d been working towards since training for the season began. After the obligatory shopping stop, we arrived at our motel and got ourselves organised for the following day.

Perspectives from different people are below: 10A - Netball tournament was great. There were challenging times but we pulled through them. This tourna-

ment really brought us together as a group, and even though we didn’t win any games we still held our heads high. We still had our pride because it’s not all about winning, it’s about the experience and the trying. Every sin-gle girl there put their blood, sweat and tears out on the court (maybe not every game) but we still tried our hard-est and that's what matters overall. The trip was really good and we all took away something new from the whole thing.

9A - It was a cool opportunity to play lots of different teams. We had some tough games and tough losses

(especially on the first day) - but came away with 3 wins overall which we were really stoked with. We tried really hard to play our game and our values - which was hard sometimes! Our teams were really supportive of each oth-er and in our last game the 10’s were so loud and really helped us lift to finish with a really close win.

Aside from the netball, we enjoyed the swimming sessions and the free wi-fi at the Warehouse (we knew it was-n’t out of order at the motel - we saw through the conspiracy).

The grown-ups - we were really proud of how hard the teams worked to get to Christchurch - both on the court

and with their fundraising efforts. We were also super proud of how they played while there. There were some really tough games, but we kept our chins up and kept working hard. A highlight was definitely the support from the 10’s in the 9’s final game which helped them lift and play a fantastic last quarter to steal a win.

And yes - it was a conspiracy about the “broken internet” but you all seemed to cope okay!

Finally

A massive thank you to our families for their support week in, week out and also with our fundraising cam-paign. Also to our friends, extended families and teachers for their support with our quiz nights.

Another massive thank you to our sponsors - Club Garin, Raeward Fresh, Meat Solutions and Pak n Save - we really do appreciate it!

And another huge thank you to Sapphire and Greta who umpired for us.

And our final massive thank you to Kate Smith, Ms O’Brien, Mrs Eggers and Ms Crump - we would not have made it without you.

Last Monday Garin sent their future diplomats on a mission to save our planet. Ap-

proximately ten of our young minds travelled to Nayland for the annual Nelson Model United Nations. An event where the real committees and focus documents of the UN are simulated into a day for kiwi youth to learn more about international relations and civics. Each attendee represented a country that they had been allocated; they had to research about the nation and follow their views and beliefs in all decisions made. The resolutions for the day were focused on future planning our planet for what issues we would face in areas such as productivity and the environment. Garin held some big names in terms of the na-tions they were allocated including Australia, United Arab Emirates and the notorious Russian Federation, all of whom worked to controversially soften the efforts to fight climate change and shut down an increase in auto-mated workforces that was being pushed by the more liberal nations at the event. All in all the Garin team thor-oughly enjoyed the day of debating, scheming and negotiating. We would encourage anyone interested in future Model United Nations events or similar to put their name forward when the opportunity comes around and give it a go!"

The Jr. Stretch and Challenge day was attended by more than 130 people, with 34 of them represented by Ga-

rin College students. Julie Arliss, the presenter from England is an international educator with a gift for making the complex simple, and the simple complex. She is committed to the provision of world-class extension activi-ties to extend education well beyond the curriculum to new areas of knowledge. This year was no exception! Students listened to talks on Genetics and Epigentics, Is the meaning of life to be happy?, Does moral value ex-ist?, and the debate, "This House believes that animals that cause significant damage may be culled." Many stu-dents commented that this was more thinking they had done in one day than in their entire life!

From the Sports Desk……

Congratulations to Margeaux Harris, Logan Spurr, Bridget Noble and John

Noble who won the mixed team division of the Tasman Secondary Schools Skiing Championships held at Rainbow Ski Area. Their success ensured that Garin College retained the cup for a second consecutive year. Well done team!

On Wednesday Garin entered a team in the Special Olympics basket-ball competition down at Saxton. There were 12 teams in total, some from as far away as Christchurch and Blenheim. Garin won division 2 with one draw and two wins. They were placed 4th over all the divi-sions in the skills competition and Ryan Turner-Maxwell was awarded the team player for Garin. Congratulations to all the students on their fair play and overall placing.

"Faith Facts" Week 5 Term Three

‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:40)

John Pridmore Visit - Reflection by Grace Roche

On Monday, a classroom of students and I were privileged to witness the life story and journey of John Pridmore. I also had the pleasure of visiting his missionary later that evening at the Richmond Catholic church. John spoke of his journey with Christ and how he found a way to live again. He expressed the pain and anger he had felt upon his journey, from when he was a young boy living in London. He told his story of how he had been through some of the toughest experiences in life but found a new hope in life due to his introduction to Christ. John always reminded us that he is not perfect and that the only way in Christ's eyes, for us to be truly perfect, is to simply be ourselves. John gave a refreshing look on life and the relationship we should be trying to make with Christ and with ourselves. “Our Lord loves to forgive” John ex-claimed as he spoke of how we can always be forgiven if we truly mean it. John spoke of his interactions with young inmates from the Bronx. Those who were in for double murders and highlighted how it's sometimes the toughest personas which have the most damaged hearts. I personally enjoyed John’s visit and believed his message of wearing a “mask” is something all students at Garin should learn. John was strong on the beliefs that we all like to wear a mask, not being true to ourselves because deep down we are scared of rejection. The idea of that being ourselves is not good enough but being ourselves is the way God intended us to be. John brought a refreshing atmosphere to the school and showed strength through vulnerability. All students who were present, religious or not, would've taken at least one good message away and It was an excellent opportunity and experience, which was highly appreciated.

Garin College Clothing Drive 2019 Garin College has donated over 600 pieces of clothing for St Vincent de Paul Richmond during our annual winter

clothing drive led by Christian Service Leaders Megan Ritchie & Jediah Frethey. During our Tuesday Assembly, staff and students held a fashion show to present the range of items that were donated. There were some amazing outfits and we are proud of our communities generosity. This action goes further than donating clothes though. At Garin College we are called to go beyond being ‘good people’. We are called by God to see the needs of our brothers and sisters, who are made in God’s image, and help them. We are guided by our Catholic Social Teaching Principle of Pref-erential Option for the Poor & Vulnerable. It states that caring for the poor is everyone’s responsibility. Preferential care should be shown to poor and vulnerable people, whose needs and rights are given special attention in God’s eyes. Jesus taught that God asks each of us what we are doing to help the poor and needy: “Amen, I say to you, what-ever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).

We see that through this action we are not only educating the minds of our stu-dents to the needs of those in our community but also educating their hearts. Once they leave our college they will uphold the dignity and rights of all people who are made in God’s image.
