MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Celebrating student success:

Our recent end of year celebration for our Year 12’s and Graduation of the class of 2015, was a brilliant event in every way. Our Year 12’s certainly enjoyed their final day in the spirit of celebration of the end to secondary school. The quality of their assembly was equalled by the manner in which they celebrated their graduation at the dinner and presentations at The Pier last Tuesday. It was wonderful to have past students, Tim Charleson and Hannah Teesdale reflect on their very positive experiences at Lara Secondary and how that had supported their move to their studies at university: Tim into finance and Hannah to teaching. Our school captains, who have been exemplary in every way throughout 2015, Kate, Agnes, Cameron, Meaghan and John, also reflected on this year and past years at secondary school, with a very strong message being that teachers go above and beyond every day for every student, to ensure that every individual is offered the best opportunity of success. We wish our VCE students currently undertaking exams the very best and our Applied Learning Students the same for their upcoming portfolio presentations.

Celebrating our teachers:

This week it was not only our Year 12’s who have acknowledged our wonderful teachers but also our Support Staff. A most delicious morning tea was provided by our Education Support Staff (ES) yesterday as we celebrated “World Teachers Day”. Shirley Niblett, business manager of our school and leader of our Support Staff made a speech to acknowledge the Lara teaching staff, which to say the least, was “amazing”. I’ve included just a small excerpt from Shirley’s acknowledgement of having “great pride” in our teachers, on behalf of our Support Staff:

“Great teachers do it all. They have to. Across all ages, languages, ethnicities, and subjects, teachers are, and need to be, some of the most widely skilled people around in order to be successful. Although standing in front of the classroom is a huge part of a teacher’s responsibilities, they extend far beyond that into the lives of their students, their students’ families and their community. A great teacher may help a student-in-need after class, attend parent & teacher meetings and barrack & coach for the school’s basketball team in their spare time. A great teacher will also attend relevant conferences, network with other teachers and engage in continuing education to stay at the forefront of their field. Great teachers teach, and we all know that. Great teachers also do so much more. Great teachers motivate, inspire and lead. They interact with their community to affect positive change through their students and themselves. Great teachers change lives. Great teachers do it all.”

Our ES staff are giving you "Rocky Road" today as a symbol of “Teaching” being a tough gig. The road is rough and the journey has mixed terrain, but exciting destinations. No matter what you teach, there are always some rocks to overcome. This year I have seen many students leave school to follow their chosen path, or graduate ready to take on life, some of whom have had some pretty “rocky” teenage years at LSC, but also have many sweet memories and have achieved great success. These students are smiling, excited, and prepared to take on life outside of school. The rocky road you will be given today represents those students that have been like rocks to move at times, but each of you has moulded in some way to follow their road into the future.”

This was certainly a very welcome and accurate acknowledgement of our teaching staff!

Success for all:

As we move all too rapidly toward the end of this school year I encourage every student through parent support to continue to be the best that they can. Exams and ongoing assessments require consistent preparation and effort, and with this, the reminder that “growth mindset” is critical – the understanding and belief that it is effort that makes the difference and that “intelligence” can be developed through sheer effort.

Science Extravaganza

Our kite builders and catapult makers were incredibly excited on

Tuesday when the wind assisted in generating some amazing distances

and times with the inventions created by our Year 7 students for their

Science Extravaganza day. In the trial of their structures there were

some running repairs required particularly when the kites began to

disintegrate prior to being flown, and the propellers on the boats were

too big and would not allow the boats to motor down their water way

without some “trimming off’. It was fabulous to participate with the

groups and watch the level of their engagement with the learning that

has been taking place. Much to the thrill of both staff and students,

the egg dropping (as per the Modern Family episode) had some of the

eggs surviving! Congratulations to all our Year 7 students and staff on

such a fabulous day.

Children’s Music Foundation

A huge thank you to Jacob and Corey for organising this “Halloween”

themed out of uniform day, in order to raise money for the Children’s

Music Foundation. Both of these senior students have already finished

their year but have chosen to return to support such an activity and

raise money for this cause. As you would suspect there have been

some interesting costumes worn with zombies, pumpkins and the

occasional witch appearing. A special mention to Julie, Felicity and

Chloe who also helped to sell the drinks and cupcakes at lunch to our

thirsty and hungry monsters. Well done!

Graduation Photos

Graduation photos are now available and on sale for $10 each

at professional photographer Dean Bateup’s studio for those

interested. The address is First Floor, 58 Moorabool Street in

Geelong.

Immunisations

The last of our immunisations will be taking place on Thursday

26th November for our Year 7 students, and our Year 8 students

will be receiving their Boostrix vaccine.

Monday 2nd November:

A reminder to all families that next Monday, 2nd November, is

a student free day for staff professional learning.

Graduation Reflection

After an intense build up that required a huge amount of organisation

and many professional discussions between the Lara Secondary staff

and certain members of the local Geelong community, the graduation

was sorted!

Tuesday 20th of October, the Year 12 cohort of 2015 strutted their stuff

at The Pier on the Waterfront, Geelong. It was a spectacular night

where over 600 family members and friends had the opportunity to

share in the celebrations of completing six years of secondary educa-

tion. Everyone looked their best, with some outstanding effort (and

dollars) being put in to the dresses, hair, and makeup.

A special thanks to Rod’s Bakery Lara for providing “LSC Cupcakes” for

all the dinner guests, to the many hours put in by the staff to make the

evening a success, and to all the guests who shared the special night

with our students. Thank you.

Raising Awareness for Refugees

From now up until the 24th of November, the Year 10 People and Places class is organising a fundraiser and a donation drive to help with the on going crisis in Syria with its Refugees domestically and internationally displaced. With the ongoing crisis in the background, the Year 10 Class has been researching ‘The War On Terror’. The Year 10 Class wants to help an international situation and help the most vulnerable of people.

Our class is asking that people donate Canned goods (no spaghetti, baked beans or soups), Blankets, dried fruits, long life milk, instant beverages, spices, sanitary products, tinned meats, disposable nappies, kitchenware, NEW linen, phones (new or old, in working condition and chargers), gift cards and international phone cards.

We really appreciate the community support with our efforts to raise awareness and donations for Refugees. All donations will be taken to The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Melbourne.

Please hand donations to the main staff room, next to the canteen by 24th November.

All VCE students (regardless of whether they are VTAC

applicants) will use their VCE student number and Results

Service PIN to access their ATAR and VCE Results in December.

By default, the Results Service PIN is the first four digits of the

student’s birthdate, e.g. 3 February is 0302. The PIN change

service is now available, and we urge all students to change

their Results Service PIN from the default prior to the release

of results. The Results Service PIN is completely separate from

the VTAC PIN.

To access the PIN change service, students must verify their

identity by confirming their VCE student number and date of

birth on the login page. If students have registered with VTAC,

they can bypass the identity verification step and go directly to

the PIN change service from the link on the homepage of their

VTAC user account

Reminders

1. YEAR 12 NEWS – Hopefully you have applied for a course

through VTAC if you plan to commence tertiary study next year. You can still apply as a late applicant now, but it will cost $95.00, not $29.00.

CHANGE OF PREFERENCE (COP) - Remember, you can change your application (preferences) as much as you like till 10 November, then again from 23 November till 12 noon on 21 December, 2015. VCE students will receive their results on Monday 14 December, so you will have a week to re-consider your VTAC application. Use this time to contact or visit tertiary institutions if you are uncertain, or contact me at school for advice.

OFFERS of places at tertiary institutions commence on 18

January 2016, with more places on offer later on (there will be five ‘rounds’ of offers in total). You are advised to accept the first offer you receive as most likely it will be your only offer (around 80% of applicants will only receive one offer); however, accepting an offer does not mean you cannot receive another offer in a later round of offers.

WHERE CAN I GET ASSISTANCE DURING ‘CHANGE OF PREFERENCE’ WEEK? The week after you receive your ATAR is generally known as Change of Preference (COP) week (Mon 14 – Mon 21 December). During this time tertiary institutions run information sessions, COP Expos, have phone assistance available and will assist you in any

way they can. You can also obtain assistance at school.

Many pathways and programs exist which may assist you to get to where you want to go. Here are some suggestions:

Complete a Diploma of Tertiary Studies at Monash University in either business (p 350 of VTAC Guide), education (p 362) or nursing (p. 381)

Complete a course at Monash College in Art & design, Arts (Human Behaviour or Psychology streams), Business or Commerce, Engineering or Science; see pages 341-2 of VTAC Guide

Complete a course at Deakin College in Commerce, Computing, Engineering, Health Sciences, Management, Media and Communication or Science; pages 197-8 of VTAC Guide

Complete a UniLink Diploma at Swinburne (eg Business p. 457, Design p. 463, Engineering p. 470, Health Science, IT p. 481)

Complete a Diploma at La Trobe Melbourne in biosciences, business, health sciences, IT or Mass Media Communications (p. 285-6)

Complete a Tertiary Preparation Course at RMIT in engineering, media or science (p. 437)

Consider studying a related university course with a lower ATAR; if you do well you MAY be able to transfer to your desired course later

Start with a VET (TAFE) course in a related field; two years of VET often equals one at university

Complete a Tertiary Studies Diploma at Melbourne Polytechnic (Preston) (p. 337)

Complete a Diploma of Liberal Arts – a pathway into a range of degrees. Swinburne (p.451) and Victoria Uni (p. 523) have this Diploma

Consider a country/rural campus. ATAR’s are often low-er, usually due to lower demand; most have accommo-dation (apply ASAP)
