THE SCHOOL FOR EXCELLENCEThe School For Excellence (TSFX) is an independent organisation that specialises in the development and delivery of high quality lectures and programs for HSC students. Our specialised programs are based on a unique system which ensures students receive the best opportunities to optimise their HSC scores. We believe that, given the right opportunities, guidance and support, EVERY student has the potential to excel in their studies.

During the course of our lectures, students receive complete and thorough instruction, and NOT just a simple overview of the basic principles of each subject. You will be taught by current and experienced HSC teachers - many of whom are authors of HSC textbooks, writers and markers of HSC examinations, members of exam committees and syllabus curriculum writers for HSC subjects. Teachers are carefully selected on the merits of their academic and professional achievements, and with special consideration to their communication skills. Our teachers are renowned for explaining concepts in a manner that students find very easy to understand!

Our programs are fun, interactive and conducted in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Students are encouraged to participate in question time and discussion sessions, and to clarify individual concerns. Don’t miss out!

YEAR 11 – A CRITICAL YEARAlthough Year 11 subjects do not directly contribute to the ATAR score issued to students upon completion of their secondary studies, academic performance across Year 11 is used to determine which subjects each student is allowed to study in Year 12.

In addition, Year 11 coursework materials form the building blocks for Year 12 studies, meaning that students must possess a solid understanding and ability to apply Year 11 concepts if they are aiming for higher scores in their final school year. Students who neglect their Year 11 studies are not only compromising their performance in Year 11 assessments; they are also affecting how well they may perform the following year.

Many Year 11 students, however, dedicate the minimum amount of time and effort to study, believing there will be sufficient opportunities to do so in Year 12. These students typically enter their final school year lacking strong foundations in Year 11 concepts, finding it difficult to cope with Year 12 course work materials and underperforming in assessments and examinations.

Since the ATAR score is dependent upon how well each student performs in comparison to every other student studying Year 12 across NSW, obtaining higher scores requires that students engage in activities which the “typical” HSC student does not embrace: consistent study, advance preparation, solid knowledge of Year 11 materials, regular revision and repetition, as well as exposure to as many HSC resources as possible.

Our “Summer School” lectures are designed to provide students with valuable application skills, and to ensure they obtain that vital head start into the Preliminary HSC course. During the course of these lectures we will cover materials to an A+ standard, introduce students to examination questions and tricks, and begin developing the problem solving and analytical skills that are required to solve those difficult analysis-style questions. Students will also receive comprehensive notes that include all of the relevant theory (transcribed into student-friendly language), fully worked examples and take home questions.

TEN POWERFUL REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND

n YOU WILL receive unparalleled advice and instruction from one of Australia’s most reputed after hours education service providers. Teachers and past students consistently rate TSFX Number One for Excellence and Quality.

n YOU WILL eliminate the need to waste valuable study time preparing notes. Each student will receive a detailed and comprehensive set of notes that cover the required knowledge to an A+ standard. Note: To date NO OTHER seminar provider has been able to match the quality and depth of materials that are issued to students who attend TSFX programs.

n YOU WILL cover materials to an A+ standard in a simple step-by-step manner. Our lecture programs offer students the most comprehensive preparation for Year 11.

n YOU WILL learn how to interpret and solve those difficult analytical and problem solving questions and gain advance exposure to the various tricks that appear in tests and examinations.

n YOU WILL develop skills that will help you manage your time more effectively and complete tests and examinations within the specified time.

n YOU WILL obtain a significant head start into the 2013 Preliminary syllabus. Having a solid knowledge of course content in advance of covering materials at school will enable you to absorb more information in the classroom, resulting in a stronger understanding of course materials, less time being spent on homework and higher test/exam scores!

n YOU WILL increase confidence and motivation levels as well as learn how to improve performance in ALL of your studies.

n YOU WILL learn the skills required to out-perform your peers in school based assessments.

n YOU WILL derive immeasurable benefit from the advice, experience, insight and perspectives from select teachers from the top ranking schools across New South Wales.

n YOU WILL gain a distinct advantage over your state-wide subject peers!

Students who have attended our Summer School programs in past years agree that these programs strengthened understanding of course materials, decreased workloads and stress levels, increased confidence and motivation and greatly improved performance in tests, assignments and examinations!

YEAR 11 BIOLOGY

These sessions will provide students with a solid coverage of the first two Modules in the Biology Preliminary Course: A Local Ecosystem (including a study of the local area analysing the biotic and abiotic factors, studying the relationships of organisms with each other and with their physical environment) and Patterns in Nature (looking across the range of living organisms to observe patterns in their fundamental inputs and outputs, seeing patterns in the structure and function of cells at a microscopic level that provide an insight into their biochemical processes, and understanding the need for the evolution of complex and efficient systems with large surface areas to facilitate the intake and removal of substances). Teachers: Mr Colin Harrison (Moriah College) & Mr Justin Varjavandi (St Aloysius’ College).

YEAR 11 MATHEMATICS (2 UNIT)

These lectures are designed to review and extend on important concepts from the Stage 5 course and provide students with a solid introduction to a number of important topics in the Preliminary Mathematics course. Topics that will be addressed include: Arithmetic and Algebra, Plane Geometry, Trigonometry, Relations and Functions and Introductory Calculus. Teachers: Mr Peter Muddle (Covenant Christian School) & Ms Jayanthi Viswanathan (Sydney Girls High School).

YEAR 11 CHEMISTRY

These sessions will provide students with a solid foundation in the first three Modules of the Chemistry Preliminary course. The Chemical Earth: Separation of mixtures, elements and compounds, atomic structure, bonding and chemical reactions. Metals: Use of metals throughout history, reactivity of metals, the periodic table and mole calculations. Water: Molecular structure and bonding, water as a solvent, precipitation reactions, concentration and enthalpy calculations. Chemistry skills will also be addressed in the areas of scientific investigations, communicating information and understanding, and problem solving techniques. Teachers: Mr Scott Hazelton (St Columba Anglican School), Mr David Parker (Sefton High School) & Ms Jane Wolter (The Scots College).

YEAR 11 ENGLISH ADVANCED AND STANDARD

Preparing in Year 11 paves the way for a better HSC year. The courses across schools may be different but the aim is the same: to practise the skills and build the knowledge needed for Year 12. This two-part lecture series will provide insights into ways of approaching texts and writing. Both lectures will look at how to read texts, giving effective strategies for dealing with the range of written and visual text types (including films, images, novels, poetry, short stories and feature articles) that may be used for the HSC course. Students will be guided through sample scenarios, essays and writing examples to gain a better understanding of what is required in order to obtain the higher scores. Guidelines for effective essay writing as well as practical hints on creative writing will also be provided. Teachers: Ms Mel Dixon (TSFX), Ms Peta Gresham (The King’s School) & Ms Liz Tishler (Macquarie Fields High School).

TSFX TEACHERS “Excellent teachers. Engaging. Great Material.” Student, Hornsby Girls’ High School

To ensure that students are afforded every possible advantage in their examinations, our lectures are prepared and delivered by qualified, currently practising HSC teachers and HSC markers who possess the knowledge and experience to demonstrate the means by which students can achieve the higher Band scores. Further details regarding our teachers (including qualifications and experience) may be obtained at www.tsfx.com.au.
